Skyward Sword had a unique distance rendering system. Farther objects become soft round pixilations, giving a feeling of Impressionism. The art style choice fits that rendering system. They actually worked on the quality of it in the HD version.
A lot of people never noticed the Impressionism art style, but that's what gave Skyword Sword it's unique feel and soft, chill vibes.

The art style is inspired by Impressionism. They've even applied it to depth of field in a mini bokeh kinda way. Nintendo is pretty good at using art style to cover up their consoles' weaknesses, which help the games' graphics hold up pretty well in the future.

But I remember the idea was to take some of the parts people love about dungeons and bring it to the over world. Think about the volcano area you had to figure out how to make your way a certain location. It wasn't a direct path. You had find those mitts to dig around in the ground. Or fight a mini boss to get past a bridge over the lava. The time stones in the desert area were a lot like dungeon puzzles.

Exactly, after a while of launching the game, I couldn't emulate it due to the movement control. Total frustration! Today I have a Switch and a few days ago I acquired the title never played before, I was outraged by the mapping of the buttons because to rotate the camera you have to hold a button and not the mapping option to change it. I ended up giving the motion controls a try and was surprised by how intuitive they are and how much I would miss out if I just played with the buttons.

Gotta be honest, even despite needing to reset sometimes, I feel like you weren’t using the motion very good in your demonstrations. I’m not that surprised it wasn’t working. The motion controls need to be reset more because of course it doesn’t have a sensor, but work more accurate and fast when it’s centered correctly.
Aim your sword slowly and then swing. Don’t make big crazy movements when flying or swimming. Move slowly back and forth on tightropes (you can run on them btw). And press reset whenever you’re about to use motion controls. Just get used to pressing it preemptively, especially if you’ve changed your position. You don’t even have to point at the screen, recenter button will recenter to whatever your current position is so you can still be pretty comfortable in whatever spot you’re in. Seriously, speed runners are still playing the game the exact same way they did on Wii with no noticeable difference or drop in quality with the controls, other than pressing recenter sometimes. Which is easier than pressing Z target for every fight.
Still, I’m glad you were able to enjoy it with buttons. That’s why it’s great to have the option.

For me, the biggest frustration with the motion controls (and the frustration that now has twice kept me from buying the game) is the complete lack of a left-handed mode for the motion controls. The joy-cons have the exact same hardware when it comes to motion controls: each of them has both a gyro and an accelerometer. And yet, if you want to swing the sword, you have to do so with the right joy-con with no option to remap the motion controls to the left joy-con.

The art style was supposed to look like a painting :) And this is my favorite Zelda after Breath of the Wild. I didn’t have any problems with the motion controls. I recenter often though cuz there’s no bar. I really don’t like the buttons. Maybe I just have to use them more but it’s super difficult for me and took me longer to do simple things. I also play like how I did on the Wii and press the button the recenter the camera often.
I used my GameStop points to only pay $40 for this game 😎 I didn’t want to pay $60 for a remaster.

Great review and glad you enjoyed the game! I kept playing with the motion controls for a few hours in the game to get better at them, and I did, so I’m used to them, they are easy, and enjoyed the moments of swords fighting and small moments like pulling the master sword out of the ground and jumping in the air to slam down my blade on an enemy. I had to reset the calibration with the tap of the button every once in a while, but I got used to doing it like instinct.

11:33-11:51 this summarizes perfectly why despite being a technologically impressive, BOTW is on the bottom of my top 5 zelda games, **unpopular opinion incoming** to me it has always felt like a glorified tech demo on what the new engine of the game can do, heck even skyward sword allows you to repair your gear and relegating the dungeon element to mostly optional challenges that all had stale identical dungeons was a real let down for me, the bosses were also disappointing.

    • @ktwenter77

Not unpopular, a lot of people dislike breath of the Wild for the reasons you mentioned. BOTW is easily my least favorite Zelda game for those reasons.

@@cleverman383 it a HUGE inprovement, not only are the bosses way more inspired and cool but the story (while still relegated to mostly hidden cutscenes) is also miles better, your allies actually serve a purpose now, the lore is more expaded, we have what in my humble opinion is the best version of ganondorf even put in a zelda game, even in twilight which is my personal favorite in the series he felt tacked on last minute, here he has a cool back story, exploration now actually feels like it has a purpose and not just to "look pretty", side missions are way more entertaining ahd add even more lore to the game, helping a town overrun by monsters was a very zelda moment, and the dungeons are back!!!!...yeah still pale in comparisson to pre BOTW era but good effort none-the-less, and I belive that I do not need to say anything about the additive and extremely fun vehicule/tool/weapon maker, it speaks volumes on it's own.
Of course it's not perfect, the annoying weapon breaking system is still here, like I mention the dungeons still lack a lot compared to other games, and it still annoys me that most of the story is relegated to cutscenes you need to find.

A few comments have asked how the motion controls have “gotten worse” on Switch compared to Wii. The answer is that it’s primarily due to the Switch’s lack of a Wii-style sensor bar.
Most players (including me!) didn’t realize that the Wii’s infrared bar did a lot of the work behind the scenes tracking where the Wiimote was pointed. Without it, Switch games that rely on JoyCon gyro for aiming (SS, Mario Galaxy, etc.) need the user to manually recenter the cursor.
    Hope this helps!
