The Galerians series is one of the more interesting Resident Evil clones to pop up during the late 90s and early 2000s. It takes the survival horror formula, strips down on horror, and takes a more action-based approach.
Instead of guns at our disposal, we have psychic powers. With a angsty teenager as our protagonist, the games deliver in late 90s and early 2000s edginess. Very much a product of its time - a much better time. A game that not only wears its Resident Evil influence on its sleeve, but the Akira series as well.
Both Galerians title take different approaches from one another. The first Galerians is classic in its survival horror setup. Fixed camera angles, tank controls, resource management - what you'd expect from a PS1 title of its era.
Galerians Ash, an early PS2 title, takes a different approach. Gone are the fixed cameras and tank controls. It takes a more traditional 3d approach to its combat, with only scraps of the survival horror formula present. It's a mishmash of ideas that results in one of the more disappointing sequels I've played in some time. While its core identity is still there, it strips away so much of what made the original a great experience. One that's well worth your time if you haven't had the chance to. The sequel? Not so much.

Considering all the other Galerians can levitate, being grounded probably _is_ infuriating for Rion.
As someone in the STEM field, scientists making absurdly stupid and/or immoral decisions is totally realistic.

Funny enough I was in a huge Resident Mood looking for resident evil clones a few days ago and Galerians was there, this is awesome timing
If there was ever a franchise that deserves a revival, it's definitely this
It's a product of it's time, not something that needs a reprisal. The sequel was the attempt to make it a franchise and only hurt the overall story to many and the bad gameplay. Some things are better as one-offs.

He's been whiny about it for going on a decade in his videos; seems to ebb and flow over the years on how obnoxious he is at the moment about it. If you watched his stuff for any amount of time you'd know long before whatever his latest video is saying.
I enjoy his vids when he can keep it in his pants but there's no telling what may trigger him in a particular video to go cringe. Also the painted fingernails should have given it away long ago too bro, lol.

How did these games go so unnoticed? i love the sound of this game premise. i wish current game preservation were better so we can play these games easier and make these gem of a games become not forgotten..

Thats the thing I wish they’ll do in regards to the ps4 and 5! Just put the ps1 and 2 games on the PlayStation store so that people can learn about these franchises and give them more recognition!
I have fond memories of this game due to the fact that a copy of this was what I used to test my modded Playstation. Seeing that intro play was amazing!

I remember seeing my friend play this on his playstation back in the early 2000s. The image of that female face with the eyeball in her mouth was seared into my 7 year old brain. Thank you for fi ally putting a name to that face after years of absent wondering.

Been at home sick for a few days, I think with COVID but nobody tests now anyway. I only recently watched your Deep Fear and it's so interesting seeing some of these games that I never saw in the flesh. Great reviews, easy to listen to and appealing. 11:50 is such a beautiful shot.

One thing to keep in mind about couples in Japan sleeping in seperate beds but the same room is that many people sleep on futons which are often not big enough to fit two people comfortably, so it could be less of a love thing and more of a convience thing

I was playing survival horror on ps1 but never heard of Galerians before today. That first game plot is actually pretty rad, would be nice if games like this actually saw remakes instead of the same tiny handful of franchises.

Wow... can't believe it's been 20 years now, since I saw the sequel at Circuit City and just bought it on a whim. Didn't even know it was a sequel to anything, or that the PS1 game even existed.
I did enjoy it all the same, back in that day there were countless "Weird" PS2 games, so it never seemed that bad to me, compared to others I had played back then.

Yeah there's lots of reasons why a couple might not sleep together. I'm not sure why Boulder thinks that if you don't sleep in the same bed the marriage must be dead and loveless? Like... you can have an active sex life with your spouse and not sleep in the same bed. You can do a sex and then go to your own rooms. Some people, and don't tell the prudes I told you this, even have sex in places other than the bedroom!
I dunno if I'd agree with Galarians being called a Resident Evil clone. Like sure it has tank controls, it has fixed camera angles. But to me RE clones were always, well, trying to ape Resident Evil. I don't get that feeling from Galarians. The sections of the game where you're exploring non-combat zones, talking with NPCs, the combat not being guns based, and just... the plot. For me a big part of being a clone is trying to do the same thing, while I'd totally call Deep Fear, Blue Stinger, Carrier and Martian Gothic RE clones for their stories being pretty resident evil-y (they got them zombies, one and all! (or close enough with Blue Stinger)), Galarians doesn't isn't. It's not just that the enemies aren't zombies, it's the context of who you fight and why, of the level and intent of pathos and bathos at play.
I guess a simpler way to put it would be: If someone likes Resident Evil, I'd definitely recommend them play Deep Fear. But I would not recommend them Galarians on their enjoyment of RE alone.

Look into Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Second Sight. Both games came out during the ps2/xbox era.

I have always been a big fan of psychic powers and really wish we had more action games revolving around them. Games like Second Sight, Psi Ops, hell even Advent Rising. Would love a open world/sandbox game that allowed you to go 'full Akira' and like blow a building apart.

Shorting does work on teh first boss which is cool. It's a shame this series never took off. It had such an interesting world we don't get to explore. And the second game spends way too much time in cyberspace I guess you could say.
I'd say a spiritual successor would work better than a reboot or remake of this series -- psionic powers make for a fun framework, but the existing story is so rooted in the tropes of the era that it'd need a complete rewrite to not be a total cringe-fest. At that point, you might as well just make something new, even if you're still wearing the _Akira_ influence on your sleeve.
I owned and played the first Galerians game. I didn't know there was a sequel until a few years ago, and there's a movie, too. Galerians is...fine. Not great, but fine.

Sorry to nitpick but that door opening sound effect is not the same one used in DooM. It was used often in the classic OG RE games though.

I was just thinking of the anime for these games from MTV2 the other day. It's like you read my mind.
You said "disappointing", "I played", "of what I've played", " best game ever made" multiple times in quick succession very close to one another all in about a minute. The syntax and momentum of the Ash Intro part of the script really fell apart. I had to stop the video and listen again because I thought I was hearing things. Try using different words that mean the same thing in this case or get some other eyes on it. I watch all your videos Boulder Punch and that's the first time I felt like you spoke/wrote a poor sentence. Constructive criticism. Hope it helps.
