A crowdfunded spiritual successor to Clock Tower in name, Nightcry is anything but. It's mega discount Clock Tower. Clock Tower at Home. Dollar store Clock Tower - my initial name for the video before I realized someone else already used it.
There is quality talent behind the scenes here. The director of the first two clock towers returns, along with other notable names in the industry. But as we've seen in many crowdfunded titles, that's no guarantee for success. Nightcry is a great example.
To be fair, there are moments where you can see something descent buried amongst the bizarre and nonsensical of Nightcry. They were working with a shoestring budget and timeframe. But that is far and few between. The end result is a tossed-together spiritual successor with much to offer, and not in a good way.
There are several puzzling, bizarre design decisions throughout NIghtcry. Plot threads dropped on a whim. It's not quite a "so bad it's good" kind of game - although it does flirt with that at times. But I can't recall the last time a game made me feel so gobsmacked while playing. Let's take a look at why.

It's sad about the end life idealation of NC is that it is real and for some of these people irl are like this and the person has no one and almost everyone instigates it...

Mental health even by some not so good therapists/psychiatrists is pretty much neglected or worse increased this game may show it in an unbelievable way to Rooney but it does happen irl to online daily for some unspoken some who literally have no one and is shamed daily by the people in their world.
3:55 In my head canon DmC Donte is like actor who got one big chance and a gig to be main character in a DmC movie, but then the movie failed hard and people hate his acting .The negative reception of the movie ended up ruined his acting career, and now his agency Capcom only give him an acting job on a low budget B movie only and some random commercial ads. Poor guy. Sold by Capcom for a scrap.
To be honest if it wasn’t a DMC reboot it could have work on its own as an original title. Not as popular but not as many negative criticisms. I think when they tried to bank HARD that “This is Dante” it gave people the wrong impression. The game wasn’t that bad having personally played it. Some parts were a bit awkward but at the time it was still fun.

It's funny because the whole series (trilogy) besides physical versions of Night Cry aren't that exspenive and CT1 has been released officially in English

Because I got 1 (PS1) for about $400, 3 (PS2) for $100, all from Amazon and they were pretty expensive the way I got them.

I think DmC Donte's model falls more into the "didn't know where it came from" free or paid model from god knows where online. Kind of like Sam Fishers model from Double Agent being used as a Level 1 Thug in those Mafia city games.
My local movie theater chain used the model from the main character of Platinum’s Vanquish in the pre-movie safety spiel video.

The creator of Clock Tower thought: "What if you we do it again but it's dogshit?".
"What if we do it again, but even though we have a teeny tiny budget we make the game's scale and scope far beyond what we could ever hope to accomplish with this paltry sum of cash?"
If they'd made the game smaller, with less area to spread that money over, I bet it would have been better. Small teams and low budgets are NEVER excuses for a game being bad because we have MANY examples of fantastic games made on small budgets by small teams, even teams as small as *one person.* Know your budget, know your limits, and work within them. That's how you make a good game.

I still remember watching a playthrough of this and Leonard in the bathtub has stuck in my head till this day. Not because I was disturbed by it but more the logistics of stripping all the flesh, muscle, fat and so on AND still keeping him alive. I'm more impressed than anything.

Hearing the voice actor that did basically every voice in Oblivion trying to do a serious character is so unintentionally funny it completely ruins whatever tension that scene would've had. Poor guy.

No matter how schlocky nightcry was it did some cool spooky things
Personally, I don't think DMC's Dante is that bad in term of design, just very different from the original style. The problem was more about how the director (or producer?, can't remember) reacted to the criticisms
And for the writing for his character, while he started off as a jerk, he became pretty likable as the story went on.
Yeah I remember reading about the director bragging that his version is the better one and destroying copy of the original game or something like that, yeah if he actually act like that no wonder the game didn't sell, that like spitting in your customer face before giving them a different type of burger than what they order
That jazz music is actually royalty free, I think. I’ve heard it in the intros for some videos by Baltmatrix, who reviews transformers and similar toys.
I highly doubt that Capcom would be willing to sell the character model for the protagonist of a game, even if said game had a rough reception, specially because they used that version of Dante as a DLC skin in MvC Infinite so they were at least trying to squeeze more money out of it for a few more years. I imagine that what really went down here had to be some other type of odd shenanigan, probably one of questionable legality like a third party ripping the model and reselling it on an asset store without authorization.

I could forgive a lot of things about this game, how strange it looks, the voice acting, the way the plot jumps around. If it only made sense and it was a good story, but it’s not, it feels like someone threw darts to chose the elements and then barely connected them before forgetting about them. I could even handle it scenes weren’t even animated and just stills with texts on them filling up the holes.
The utter mediocrity makes me sad, this wasn’t made by creatives who didn’t have a budget big enough to be able to make the game they wanted to make, it was made by scammers that presented the cheapest product they could get away with to people who gave them money directly.

This game really did feel like a minimum viable product alright...
You know, before he revealed it, I saw Danny and thought "is that Dante?". That was pretty funny. And I'm not gonna lie, Rooney doing her thing with her eye was pretty metal.
am i the only one who loves these obscure games that have an engine built from scratch and have controls and animations that feel unique and distinct . sadly this looks like the only thing this game has . because gameplay wise its not ''sandbox'' enough to feel like a game . what i mean is it doesnt give enough player agency by giving players tools and allowing them to just experiment and fail and actually play a game . instead it relies heavily on quicktime events and cutscenes . and looking at its release date it makes sense

17:46 i remembered some company had rock music bro. I asked the person who came on. Will, she said one of her coworkers plays guitar. He did a fantastic job 👍🏾 it was like multi songs. Fast & slow ones.. i was on hold for a good 16 mins.
If i remember correctly the girl who calls you saying to not trust eric can be found dead when you play as monika earlier on, so i'm guessing that was the only clue they left.
If that was the intent it's not a very good one imo, since the characters timelines aren't synched. Like with Roonie starting at the party even though by the end of Monica's stuff is already going down. So I think most people would just assume that Monica's part, finding the body, happened after Roonie got the call. And we never get any sign that the monster can mimic voices or anything. Or even take its hands off the shears to type out a text! So if that was meant to be a hint... I'm unimpressed, still feels like BS.
@@Shenaldrac Yeah, the whole thing with Eric seems just weird or unfinished, if you die at final confrontation he's the only survivor. He's weird and seems to know more than he's letting on, but there's nothing in the game about him beyond that from what i could notice.

I unironically love Clock Tower 2/Ghost Head... It was entertaining and goofy in a charmful way. And Bates was my boy.
Nightcry though is just weirdly bad with no charm.

This is one of those instance where I really wished they went back to the first Clock Tower game instead of the latter ones.
One thing that a lot of people don't mention about Clocktower is that even the original was quite funky and had some questionable design decisions. One of the weirdest things about the First Fear to me is that actions that have literally no feasible impact on an event would lead to story/ending changes. There is a suit of armor in the First Fear where if you check it, you find the body of one of your friends. If you don't check the suit of armor, that friend is found alive later like some kind of Schrodinger's cat situation. I think any modern game that aims to directly emulate Clocktower needs to consider abandoning the nonsensical elements that make the game feel like some horror house attraction rather than a narrative that makes sense.
There are certainly moments I appreciate in this game but it's buried in so much jank and weird decisions it's hard to even saviour those parts.
I am a big fan of how Rooney pulls her eye out and sounds like she's mildly inconvenienced.
You should absolutely play remothered as well. Very enjoyable game and I believe it has a sequel which I should really get around to buying.

The whole series had some goofy stuff. Throwing bed sheets over the killer & stuff. So I know what I was getting into. Old point & click bs too 🤣 touch everything multiple times. I played it after all the errors was fixed. So my experience was like the ones who played it one day one or week one. I played the PC version & only crashed once. It was a fun goofy horror game. It was super short too. And I loved ghost head/face 🤷🏾♀️ more then any of the others in the series. But they all was fun. The spin off ones too.. like hunting ground. But this game spoiled who the main bad guy was super early. I just pretend I didn't see that 🤨 the kills was crazy goofy & good. I didn't take it too seriously but I liked it.

I agree. I actually enjoyed that game for what it was. If they had the chance to keep going with more games I think they may have improved a lot. But we eventually got DMC5 so I'm not complaining.

This game was such a disappointment XD I feel bad for everyone who was genuinely excited at getting a modern Clocktower game and were instead given _this_ dumpster fire. Awful gameplay, awful level design, awful writing, awful voice acting/direction, handling of mental illness, literally no background music because the morons making the game _couldn't figure out how to have it function in the game!_ No, really, you can buy the OST separately, they MADE music for the game but couldn't make it work IN THE GAME!
It's a fantastic flaming shitheap to watch for laughs, but as an unironically entertaining, enjoyable game it failed on every level and I feel so bad, so so bad, for the people who were looking forward to something great. Guess it's another playthrough of Haunting Ground for them.
