    I attended her performance of the Four Seasons a few days ago. She is now 22. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It was such a pleasant surprise to find that she had already mastered the four seasons 10 years ago. Wow! I can’t even begin to fathom the talent this takes as a non-musician and newbie appreciator of classical music.

    I really hope she likes this instrument. I hope that when she practices, she dreads the moment she puts the violin down. I hope that when she performs, she can close her eyes and feel the warmth of her instrument wrap her in its warm embrace. I hope she loved the violin with a passion.

    Soo-Been really surprised me when I first saw this. She is unlike most prodigies who seem to just recite pieces awkwardly and with this clueless expression on their face - playing like a trained monkey. She is so young yet she already plays at at world-class level, better than many of her adult counterparts and better than me (that's not saying much though lol xD). Also, most surprising is that she already plays with the maturity of a seasoned performer and has already cultivated a highly nuanced stylistic taste. If I had heard this as a recording instead, I would have never guessed the performer was as young as Soo-Been and thought this was a seasoned professional playing.
    This girl is a a rising star. I would not be surprised if she will eventually reach the same critical acclaim of other Korean soloists like Kyung-wha Chung, and Soyoung Yoon.
    I think they made a mistake not giving Soo-Been first prize. She should have won.
    I'm rooting for you Soo-Been! With love from your new fan.
    Oh and by the way, I love your chubby cheeks! :3 I wanna pinch you! ^^ Heh. Such a cute, beautiful girl. :)

      Kevin Zhu (lol! He has the same name as me) was first place, and he's quite tough, too. I have no idea who is better, but I don't play the violin, so my judgement should never be trusted.

    • @chaosart152
      @chaosart152 6 років тому +4

      Sorry if i don't write correctly a word ,English is not my native lenguage (i just learned it; you said that other prodigians kids play instruments, (piano, violin, chello) with none expressions, but you have to think it better before saying something like that. Most of them were obligated to play, and some of them have no option. Because of the increse of people in those contries, theres a law that says familys can have only One kid, so they put all they wishes and hopes in that One Kid. Some of those kids are the base of the family, the sustent of a normal or "comfortable" life. Its hard to them, because they dont have time to love the intrument.
      It's not with ofense intention, just saying. And it's unfair, because an instrument should be played with passion and love.

    • @kayoungkwon7847
      @kayoungkwon7847 6 років тому +1

      i agree, but in korea, the amount of children are not limited to just 1. i mean yes parents' hopes are very pressuring no matter what (especially in asia) and my sister hated violin too until my mom stoped putting so much pressure on her. she actually practiced even more than she used to. so yea i hope soo been doesnt fell pressured and loves to play her instrument. also soo been YOU GO GIRL REPRESENT OUR COUNTRY (fellow korean here)

    Antonio Vivaldi created these pieces to be played by an all girls orphanage school...so seeing these kids play this score is more true and real to how this music was presented. And this little girl can play just as great as the pro's I have heard so far....brilliant and bravo!!

      People at that age are usually not prodigies and don't become virtuosos unless they are serious in music. Some parents push their kids to practice music and other things. Most kids would rather watch TV or play and behave like people their age. Playing Classical music before kids are born might make them smarter but doesn't guarantee they would all be virtuosos.
      For those who believe in reincarnation, some of them may have past lives as musicians so they are reborn into this life not having to learn to play an instrument from scratch.

      interesting analysis my friend. but to me it was the sheer force of the individuals dicipline and a culture that fostered this unparalleled mastery that has given us this beautiful work of art. if only every culture fostered this type of brilliance who knows where we could go

    • @thepianoplayer416
      @thepianoplayer416 7 років тому +3

      You are right about the idea of "discipline". Many Asian parents get their kids into piano or violin lessons with private teachers even when music class is not in the schools they go to. However...
      Not all "Asian" parents "push" their kids to the performance level. I've seen parents who would get their kids to bring their violins & keyboards to people's homes and give performances. Other parents will tell you their kids are taking music lessons BUT they are not good so don't expect them to play for anybody (embarrass themselves).
      The classic example of a mother who pushed her daughters to play music is the Chinese-American author (Tiger Mom) Amy Chua. In her book "Battle Hymns of the Tiger Mother" she wrote that she wouldn't take no for an answer when it comes to music practice. If they don't play their pieces perfectly, no dinner.
      I am in the middle. I get to perform regularly with a group of musicians in a church. It is a group effort and I am not featured as a soloist in a concerto. You work hard nonetheless because you want the group to sound good.

      Alas, some do not understand the torment that lies behind so many of the asian child virtuoso's...of course, nobody says it, but they all know. They want you to think she enjoys it; they want you to think it is from the beauty of culture, but in reality it is a gruelling attitude of work, work, work. 'But it's so beautiful, the child must enjoy it it.' Very rare when it gets to this level and age. It's from hard work-anybody can reach this stage as long as they are of above average intelligence, but not many would think that people would really push their children to this level, or that it's even feasible. There are some who truly do enjoy it and do it for them, not their parents, but sadly, that is rare in such cultures.

      I`ve just watched Kevin Zhu as well, and there's no way his performance was better IMO. Compared to Soo-Been Lee, his play was too mechanical, and I detected an error too. His bow was not going straight at all, and he didn't seem like he had his heart set in this performance. Not that he wasn't great, don't get me wrong, he's incredible, but Soo-Been brought me to tears, Kevin didn't. She should've won 1st place!

    Wow... I like how it was a pretty Baroque style with not so much vibrato. I came to this video after watching Christian Li's rendition of Summer (he's the 2018 joint 1st place winner). I think this is a fresh change from all the interpretations of the 2018 competitors, and I really liked how she gave a feminine spin onto this piece (Christian had a sharper sound and tone while hers is more peaceful and laid back), but that the two are both so passionate about what they're playing.
