    There are many classes of medications on the market proven to effectively treat hypertension including ACE inhibitors, diuretics (water pills), beta-blockers, vasodilators, central agonists, calcium channel blockers, and many more.
    Even if you are taking medications for your high blood pressure, lifestyle changes such as exercise, hydration, quitting smoking, and diet are highly recommended, as these modifications can enhance the effectiveness of the prescribed drugs.
    But a new study is touting the benefits of adding yoga, as opposed to stretching, to your exercise routine as a way of impacting your global cardiovascular risk.
    "There are several possible explanations including the effect yoga has on our autonomic system. Our adrenal glands produce our fight-or-flight hormones which increase both our heart rate and blood pressure. Specific types of yoga can decrease our cortisol level which is a stress hormone thereby reducing our blood pressure. Exercise with the addition of yoga can modulate these hormones to a level of tranquility," explained Aventura Cardiologist Leonard Pianko MD on this WPLG segment.
