0080 is work of art, I always recommend it to people because it is often overlooked by all of the other flashier gundam shows. 0080 tells a good story that you won't soon forget.
I give the narrator an award for such a convincing/great voice to describe how dramatic and true that statement was. Even as a kid this actor was a big influence to me on toonami.
Edward Kovach The narrator is Peter Cullen, aka Optimus Prime himself. ;) You should see all the other toonami promos hes done, esp. the ones for Gundam.
The budget of animes was really high back then. It took a few years after the recession hit and then you see how animation declines. While some anime companies found interesting ways to deal with budget shortfalls (moving funds from His & Her Circumstances to Evangelion) eventually the need for more and more anime to fill up the growing channels and consumption, with the restricted budgets means animes now are often more formulaic. Also this being an OVA the animation is just that much better. The fight at Antarctica base in 0080 or the fight in Australia in 0083 just are so smooth and the movements are incredible.
War in the pocket is still to this day one of my favorite anime experiences ever. The emptiness i felt as a kid at the end with Al just bawling his eyes out had me not knowing how to feel for weeks after. Truly riveting stiff
This is my favorite of the Gundam ceries. The way thoseHygogg's dispatched those guys in the beginning was so fucking cold. Ice cold. I love it. Gives me chills.
The Hygoggs are some of the more versatile amphibious mobile suits. Despite them barely having enough screen time, they made quick work of the GMs the fought.
Man... I remember when I was in middle school, one of the first Gundam action figures I bought was the "Alex" NT-1. One hell of a set too considering it came with the plate armor accessories as well.
Why can't children's shows be as meaningful as this show was? I realize that the Gundam franchise isn't strictly intended for children but it was still watched primarily by kids and when they did watch they learned about topics like trust and militarism, innocence, and death. Nowadays every children's show is just farts and friendship in my opinion. Luckily I have all the major gundam series on DVD for future generations.
I agree and also have to disagree. Most of the cartoons aren't educational enough, no moral or anything it's all just as with movies and even schools mainly consumerism down the throat and fuck the rest. The most useful things in life I have learned from my grandparents and not in schools or similar educational establishments. This needs to change everywhere. While I also cannot recommend this anime to anyone because it gives nothing useful. The main character is a evil kid working for the enemy and all the others are ignorant, naive, stupid so as the whole plot makes no sense. They said they were going with a realistic approach in this one but there is nothing realistic in this. Schools would be closed and people would be mainly in shelters no one would stand around and watch mechas fight etc. The evil guys who died deserved to die and there is nothing sad about them. The only sad thing was that the girl who operated the gundam was really naive person. People like that don't survive in reality and she somehow is the best character in the anime.
@@P33b4Ugo5omwh3r3 Okay, I know it is 6 months later, but I'm sorry, I....Don't think you really understand Mobile Suit Gundam at all, or the concepts behind the Federation/Zeon war. Neither side is really good or ever, and both have committed a number of atrocities. After being heavily repressed by the Federation, Zeon's government sent a female soldier (Cima) to unknowingly gas a Federation controlled colony with a potent nerve gas. Cima was unaware of that the mission was exactly, and frankly, was just following orders, as any grunt soldier loyal to their country would. That said, after the whole Operation Stardust fiasco, the Federation later gave birth to the Titans, a tyrannical organization that got off on abusing people's rights, constantly, and harming civilians, whether or not they were Zeon supporters or not. Man how is it that Japan seems so far ahead of terms of story telling and pure creativity , no aminated show made in the u.s. at the time could be compared.....
Two reasons. One is that you're cherry-picking. There were plenty of mediocre and bad anime too, it's just that nobody remembers them. The other is that US cartoons were just vehicles to sell toys rather than tell an actual story. Gundam itself was and is also meant to sell toys (and nearly died because of the original series' failure to do so). The difference is just that animation in the US at the time was viewed as pretty much exclusively only for young kids. Something you were supposed to "grow out of." Having a cartoon aimed at an older audience would literally be a selling point because of how relatively uncommon it was.
i mean tbf gundam isn't exactly exclusively for kids, this specific OVA was made for hardcore and adult fans of Gundam and Toonami at the time loved to air more seinen-aimed anime and being able to get away with it just by editing it to the bare minimum of a TV-Y7-FV rating
