What if Oedon tried to had a child with Queen Yarhnam but this baby died and, as the lore says, when a great one losses their child they look for a substitute, and Ebrietas was a child from the Pthumerian age who was ascended by Oedon? Then the great ones left and she was abandoned because she was just a failure and not a great one. That would explain why she was helping the Choir and why she was praying to the altar that reverses time, as she was trying to reverse to her human form. She doesn't want to fight, she was using the church to trying to contact with the great ones and, seeing that she could never do so, she praid to become human again.

I've always been curious about the dichotomy between the Choir and Mensis. In my personal speculation I viewed them as two separate schools of thought within Bergenwerth that split and eventually broke up the school through their disagreements and animosity.
They could have easily been that, especially seeing as they seemed to imprison the Choir member with the Upper Cathedral Ward key and with Choir Intelligencer Edgar spying in the Nightmare.
Byrgenwerth was the spring from which the healing church and school of Mensis flowed. The split, as I interpret it, is that Mensis wanted to commune with the Great Ones, whereas the church wanted to BECOME them. Both were in opposition to the conclusions of Willem, that human enlightenment and evolution must be achieved without the direct involvement of the Great Ones.
@@lemonoreo5762 I always saw it as the Healing Church split from Byrgenwerth with Laurence and Willem disagreeing on how to ascend, and then a while later, the Church split up, but a lot more violently than last time.
Personally, I see the School of Mensis being the same thing as Bergenwerth (I don’t think that’s spelled right) but without any moral restrictions or responsibilities that William enforced. Basically, anything goes so long as the goal is achieved.
I believe that Celestial Emissary is the choir. I think that they went to conduct their experiments in the orphanage after they created the Living Failures in the Research Halls. The Living Failures were failed attempts at creating kin or great ones. I think after that they thought they kind of knew what they were doing and went to the orphanage and experimented on orphans there. I also think that brainsuckers are people that were experimented on at the Orphanage. This is because their insight sucker thing looks like it comes from a insision on their heads. I think they were also experiments to create kin. I think eventually, maybe even right before the game starts, they did it. They found out how to ascend. Maybe the used a third umbilical cord, maybe a pearl slug, maybe even by making contact. I think they experimented or did a ritual of some kind and became Celestial Emissary, closer to Ebritetas and a great one. It's kind of unnerving to think that they were watching you from above this whole time; You were exploring in Cathedral Ward, hunting in old Yarhnam, fighting on the Great Bridge, and defeating Vicar Amelia, all right below them.
I agree with this completely. The fact that the Emissaries are in the "orphanage" is an extremely telling detail, and YES, it is unnerving that they were watching the whole time and the typical Yharnamite sees none of it! They hoard secrets and understand what's going on in Yharnam, but they care only about ascension.
This video lore is so good. I love how you explained all the connections with Ebrietas as a The starting point of the mythology. Ebrietas is such a fascinating figure and her lore is drenched in sadness. I must admit that fighting her made me feel sad
Thank you! The Choir is particularly fascinating. It really is one of the most important parts of the church, but most of the information that you find on them are in the most hidden places. I suppose that's on purpose since they're so secretive, but they're one of the most exciting groups int he game.
I'm a little new to bloodborne (only a few days in actually), but the lore is so absorbing and the mechanics far more fun to me than a standard souls game that it's quickly shot up to my fave game. Gonna keep peeling through your videos, your voice is great!
just discovered your channel while looking up bloodborne lore. amazing content you have here :D love how you connect everything so it's easy to understand. Bloodborne has some crazy ass lore lol
Thank you so much, that's great to hear! I assume that people who are watching are either familiar with the lore or have played the game at least once, but I wonder if that might not be easy to understand. I'm glad to know you feel it's understandable!
I though too that the holy medium of blood healing was Ebrietas, then another content creator made me realize it was Laurence's transformed skull, who was the first vicar of the Church. It is venerated in the main cathedral, it is heavily guarded and not only it is bloodied, it is filled with arcane knowledge, there is space leaking out of it. The knowledge and power he acquired allowed its skull to become a blood spring
Another split that intrigues me is the League versus the Crows. Something tells me Valtr was once a Crow who broke off because he seemed to go mad, but not entirely. The idea that everything contains some kind of corruption, and the threat wasn't just turned hunters. But again this is just speculation based on the following: 1) Valtr's accent (similar to Eileen giving me the idea they both may have come from a similar or same geographic place), 2) His fanaticism/fervor to eliminate vermin (the corruption within man) implying similar but increased or altered targets, 3) He is the Beast Eater if you complete the League questline which means he would be infected with the scourge of the beast. But then again, he may be running from the Crows and not split. Either way I feel there is a connection between the Crows and the League, as unlikely as it might be, but entertaining nonetheless eh? Cheers Michela, your lore breakdown and the revisiting of this great game is most welcome.
That's an interesting speculation! I haven't necessarily seen the League and the Crow Hunters as related, but it's certainly possible. I love both sects.

Thank you! I appreciate that and I'm glad you liked the video. Ebrietas is one of those characters that never left my mind, so I couldn't not do a video.
@@Michela she still hasn't left my mind. Lovecraft would be proud if he could see bloodborne. I came really late to the party, but bloodborne has become my all time favorite game. Thank you again for shedding light on one of the most critical and strangly shrouded characters.
I don't think the alter of despairs information was left out the game, it must be open for interpretation. I went to the wiki and there was a lot of theories at the bottom I read. One guy said it was an old great who had power to reverse time.
Enough of the story is open for interpretation that your theory makes sense. I still wonder if there was supposed to be an intended connection between Cainhurst and the Altar though since that's the only item you can take to it.
@@Michela cainhurst was very clearly one of the last things that got finished. theres alot of obviously cut rooms and areas in cainhusrt. chances are ebby was sposed to be there originally, and they moved her in the end for some reason.
From what I gather, the great ones didn’t come from other worlds so much as they came from the in game world but ascended to a higher state of being long ago and now reside in artificial planes of reality known as dream planes. Hard to say but more or less is how it comes off from a lot of what’s hinted. Also - It’s speculated that Rom is child of the great one, as stated that all great ones lose their prodigy, so it would makes sense to why the left behind great one mourns at the alter of despair. Added - On the use of the name “Isz,” there’s an MTV cartoon called “The Maxx” and it’s a weird mental drama that involves reality and the dream world. Anyway, a fictional monster in the film is called an “Isz” and I’m curious if there’s a connection somewhere.
Thank you! Frankly, I wish I did too. I'm always working on multiple projects at once, so I update here when I feel inspired. I actually think that ébriétas is actually the daughter of kos, which makes her the real orphan of kos. She is called ebrietas daughter of the cosmos, The word cosmos can be spelled as Kosmos as well. Kos or Kosm is short for Kosmos.
As I’ve found lore hunting to be mostly male dominated especially ones about from software games, this view and take was both amazing, in-depth and much needed, I’m only one video in but intend to watch the series and hope you continue to lore hunt Micheala
Good video. Glad to see someone still doing straightforward Bloodborne lore videos. Though I have some disagreements with you: 1. Long before the founding of the Choir, the blood was discovered, and the discovery of blood entailed the discovery of undesirable beasts. Gehrman was also a hunter at the Fishing Hamlet before the Healing Church was founded, so presumably the scourge was already around before the Choir, before Isz and before the Healing Church. Therefore, I don't think it's appropriate for Ebrietas to be the source of blood. They already had blood, and they had Blood Saints for distribution. Crucially, in the Formless Oedon rune it makes it very clear that "human or no, the oozing blood is a medium of the highest quality", so apparently it is not just the blood of the gods. 2. Though the Healing Church is certainly interested in medicine, it's really salvation that's their mains interest, and that's partially accomplished through the blood. In fact, in Japanese the ritual of blood is referred to as the ritual of the blood of salvation or something like that. It's said that the blood made their dream of evolution come true, so their motivations can be traced back to there, a yearning for ascending their limitations, and this is why the Healing Church was able to take hold in Yharnam. It is not that everyone is sick and in dire need of medicine, it's that being human at all is a kind of sickness in Yharnam. Impostor Iosefka in particular embodies this philosophy. 3. In regards to the Abandoned Workshop being connected to Oedon Chapel, it's actually not supposed to be there. It's supposed to be right next to the entry to Yahar'gul, but it was moved for whatever reason, and you can prove it using Shining Coins like so: imgur.com/cVVU1Bl 4. In Japanese, it seems that the "head shudder uncontrollably note" is not referring to Willem, because it refers to Willem as something like "teacher master" usually, but not in that note. It's more like a master of servants in the note. Once again, good video.
I appreciate you pointing that out! It's foggy as to whether or not Ebrietas was found early. One of the item descriptions suggested that she was found slightly after the time of Byrgenwerth, so you very well could be right that the Old Blood could have easily been from another Great One or otherwise stored in the labyrinth. I do feel though that much of Yharnam's blood comes from her, as she's kept just below the Grand Cathedral. I feel that you're pretty much on the money with the Healing Church. I'd say they're interested mostly in ascension under the guise of healing. I know that Mensis is very wrapped up in the idea and I feel that the Healing Church is as well, although their tactics are slightly less outwardly horrifying. I've been taking the cut and early-development content with a grain of salt, paying attention to it and finding it interesting, but doing my best to maintain that what's canon is what made it into the game. There are a few fascinating details though like that one, I didn't know it was originally connected to Yahar'gul. Thank you for the feedback, it's all good to know and I'll keep it in mind for any future lore videos.
Have to agree with Herbert. The blood was found a good bit before ebrietas. This is backed by heavy implication that she was discovered by the hearing church not Byrgenwerth. And when Laurence leaves they already have the adage “fear the old blood” so 99% they were using blood before ebrietas. Her location and a few ite descriptions also suggest she is an object of worship and an attempt to communicate with other great ones similar to how the Celestial Emissary is used. Over all great video actually have watched it at least 5 times over the past year cuz it’s the only/best video touching choir lore
I think it was formless Oedon that was originally found down the Labyrinths and was the source of the Old Blood. The Pthumerians must have used the blood which caused the Scourge to spread among them, much like the Humans after. I think the Healing Church knew this, but kept it secret, instead using the Old Blood to gain power and posterity in Yarnham, enlisting Hunters to keep any outbreaks under control and out of sight. I also think that the Church created the Ashen Blood in Old Yarnham, which made more and more people dependent on Blood healing, but this perpetuated the Scourge and it got out of control, Old Hunters were overwhelmed, leaving Laurence, the leader of the Healing Church the only option to burn it down to the ground, Beasts, People the lot
It really is! There's a big learning curve but once you get it down (and learn how to lure enemies, that really helped me) it starts to make sense at least.
Tbh I haven't reached that far cause I don't like playing games alone and nobody will play with me but I've always been curious about a lot of bloodborne lore and I'm too lazy to look into shit myself and from this video it seems to be relatively easy to follow and enjoyable content I say you done good

Something i'm shocked you didn't bring up the mechanical prepose of the Alter of despair. Resurrecting annalise. I wonder if Ebrietas was trying to resurrecting Rom. Micholash said "As you once did for the various Rom grant us eyes." while he's referring to Kos with what we know of her and the fate of the Orphan i doubt Kos was responsible for Rom's failed accession and resulting Kinship, given Ebritas's state of Despair hence the name of her arena i wonder if Rom was her child? Speaking of Ebritas and children the Upper Cathedral ward is covered in celestial children that all face towards her. if i recall the one conceived between odeon and Arianna doesn't. I always assumed Ebritas impregnated the female members of the choir that resided atop of the tower as the blood moon fell. It makes me wonder ware said female members have gone. I'm curious if the celestial children are kin or if they could mature into great ones? A notable difference between odeon and ebritas is that Ebritas is mechanically considered Kin and Odean while not fought in game is clearly a great one hence it's child's third cord and why Ebrietas's progeny don't. It's strange to consider how close together the spheres of influence of Ebrietas and Odeon are. I have a bit of a theory on Ebritas's origins, as a matured Celestial Child born between a great one and a prominent Pthumerian. growing up cared for by the other Pthumarians (Who look humanoid and act positively as carers) As time when on the true great ones ascended leaving their bodies as they acended, she was left almost alone hundreds of years later discovered by Laurences healing church expedition, Ebritas having been brought up by other humanoids she'd see the healing church members as familiar rather than strange and foreign. Then they made a pact both parties yearning for the same greatness. hence why she'd so willingly offer her power, blood and council to them in an attempt to help them ascend but unwittingly brings about untold suffering though the effects of her blood on Yharnam's populous. Not to mention the church's horrific excrements. All she really wanted was to join her kin among the stars but though the most human of intentions she brings only sorrowful ruin upon those she tries to help and herself. A side note. I was wondering why the fish people ware a thing in the fishing hamlet and a possibility came to me that each great ones blood twists a human differently. Ebrietas turns those who intake her Blood to beasts it's not an illogical thought to thing Kos's blood created fishermen for lack of a more exact term.

Fantastic video. The more I read and watch about Bloodborne’s lore, the more I want.
It has that effect!
Gotta be honest; you are probably the most informative when it comes to the lore of Bloodborne
Thank you so much! There's definitely a community of awesome Bloodborne creators out there.
This video lore is so good. I love how you explained all the connections with Ebrietas as a The starting point of the mythology. Ebrietas is such a fascinating figure and her lore is drenched in sadness. I must admit that fighting her made me feel sad
i really didn’t wanna kill her without knowing why i was doing it this playthru. she just sits there sad looking so i needed lore thanks
You're welcome! I hope it helped, even though this knowledge makes defeating her even sadder.
Rom's body is dead but his conciousness was slain
Great video! Always wanted a video on the Choir, always found them the most interesting mysterious part of the Church.
Thank you! The Choir is particularly fascinating. It really is one of the most important parts of the church, but most of the information that you find on them are in the most hidden places. I suppose that's on purpose since they're so secretive, but they're one of the most exciting groups int he game.
Really cool to see people still making BB lore videos! Will definitely check out more.
Thanks! I have another one coming out in the next couple of weeks too.
Awesome, I look forward to it!
Great vid, you deserve way more subs
Wow i loved the narrative sequence of this video, very well done
Thank you very much! My next one should be up in the next few weeks.
Thank you Michela, i will keep an eye open. you rock :)
This was pretty cool, excellent vid.
Thank you!
Cool video, makes me wish I had a PS4 this game looks cool as heck
Thanks! If you happen upon a PS4 this month, Bloodborne is free with PS+ :)
great video! You condense a lot of knowledge here in one video
Thanks!
The knowledge and power he acquired allowed its skull to become a blood spring
still watching BB content in 2024
I'm glad to see it!
Aaaaah just beat her last night. Although i feel a bit bad upon defeating her.
Great vid
Thank you!
This was amazing and so insightful no pun intended
My goal is to grant you eyes! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Liked, shared, and subscribed. Gonna see what other good content you have. Great work on this one. Helped really piece things together, and in a way everyone and anyone will understand. Keep up the good work.
Great video! Very nice work :)
Thanks so much Hijuga!
How am I only now finding this awesome channel??
Thank you! I'm waiting for algorithm-senpai to notice me 😅
Well imma go watch/like everything you have on this topic as a form of protest
Ah I can’t believe I just found your channel! Your videos are great ❤️
Thank you so much!
I appreciate this video. Thank you.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Nicely done!!
Thank you Sinclair! You know I love your videos ❤
Amazing video!
Thank you!
Great vid as always, wish you uploaded more often
Thank you! Frankly, I wish I did too. I'm always working on multiple projects at once, so I update here when I feel inspired. Lore videos normally take me a few weeks as well due to the level of work and research put in. Luckily I was inspired to do this one right after my last video, so I posted this one as soon as it was finished.
Maybe you could do a playtrough of a Souls (or any other) game of your choice, just casually, so you would be with us more often :)
That's so sweet! Now that you mention that, I'm doing a new playthrough on Twitch for the Return to Yharnam event! I don't post all of my broadcasts here, only the ones where I feel like making my playthroughs organized, but if you're on Twitch, I'd love to see you there! I'll also give you a follow.
I'm micheladee on Twitch :)
Sure, its always good to watch a fun stream :)
I actually think that ébriétas is actually the daughter of kos, which makes her the real orphan of kos. She is called ebrietas daughter of the cosmos, The word cosmos can be spelled as Kosmos as well. Kos or Kosm is short for Kosmos.
If that's the case then her coffin born sibling is a brat
Just heard you on Jeremys podcast. Great episode and great Maria cosplay !
Thank you Knight Souls! I loved being on Don't Give Up Skeleton, Jeremy's an awesome guy
As I’ve found lore hunting to be mostly male dominated especially ones about from software games, this view and take was both amazing, in-depth and much needed, I’m only one video in but intend to watch the series and hope you continue to lore hunt Micheala
Thank you so much, Rashard!
Good video. Glad to see someone still doing straightforward Bloodborne lore videos. Though I have some disagreements with you:
It's supposed to be right next to the entry to Yahar'gul, but it was moved for whatever reason, and you can prove it using Shining Coins like so: imgur.com/cVVU1Bl
Aside from Vicar Ameilia and Amygdala, Ebrietas is some prime waifu material. Good video, had to sub.
Thank you!
wth no bro go to church

great video!
Thanks!
Bloodborne got me into the souls genre, but is hard as shit.
It really is! There's a big learning curve but once you get it down (and learn how to lure enemies, that really helped me) it starts to make sense at least.
@@Michela ya especially the bosses, its just a game of trial and error.
Shouts out to Dean Winchester for helping kill monsters across platforms.
YES I love playing with my friend and his Dean Winchester character
Tbh I haven't reached that far cause I don't like playing games alone and nobody will play with me but I've always been curious about a lot of bloodborne lore and I'm too lazy to look into shit myself and from this video it seems to be relatively easy to follow and enjoyable content I say you done good
Thanks! I hope your friends manage to spend some time playing with you, it's absolutely worth it and also fun to co-op!
I don't really have friends on ps4 :/
Oh no! That's when I usually start trying to recruit in-person friends to play Soulsborne games with me (with varying success, lol)

Hey I know this an old video but I would love to see or hear you thoughts on moon presence
The Moon Presence is an interesting one! The closest I've gotten is speaking about the Great ones in another video I made called Gods and Nightmares 😊
@@Michela I'll check it out
I don’t understand a thing but these videos are still great
I'm delighted to know you enjoy the videos anyway!
I wish this video was an hour long
This means so much! Thank you.
If you haven't seen the other videos, I have a whole Bloodborne playlist! I think together, they might be about an hour.

I'm planning on it and planning on making two more right now! They tend to take me far longer than the more casual videos on my channel, but if there's a long gap in time in between when I post videos, it's probably because I'm working on lore. 😊

She's not a great one she's kin. Big difference... 👍👍
Nah she's a great one
@@KDB349 Kin are creatures that used to be people but have ascended to the level of Great Ones.
You can see this in the Celestial in the very back of Iosefka's Clinic, as it's only half-transformed and has a few patches of human skin and a hand that still look human and only has five fingers.
Kin also bleed clear stuff that looks like plasma when you hit them. Both Rom and Ebrietas are kin and will bleed clear when struck (though Rom is only half way there, as she only bleeds clear when her head is hit, but her body bleeds red.) The enemies that do this include: Brainsuckers, Garden of Eyes, small Celestial Emissaries, Fluorescent Flowers, Celestial Children, Rom, Ebrietas, the Celestial Emissary, and the Living Failures.
Kin also have a connection with the arcane and the cosmos as can summon meteors and other things from them as part of that connection.
I think that there is also some element of phantasms being used in conjunction with the kin transformation as the Blacksky Eye can summon meteors like some of the other Kin bosses... but I'm honestly unsure. There's also some lore-related stuff that suggests that Kin are opposite to Beasts in that Kin are what happen when you remove your fear and embrace the eldritch truth of the blood.
tl;dr: Kin are what happens when you embrace the eldritch truth of blood and transform without fear (supposedly.)
I have over 1000 hours in Bloodborne, I've read every item description, I've read the pale blood hunt from red grave and everything else about the lore of Bloodborne. And it is common knowledge in the BB community that ROM and ebriatas are kin not great ones. Do more research and happy hunting... 👍👍👍
But awesome vid otherwise
Thanks! Ebrietas is referred to directly as the "left behind Great One" in the choir garb description. Ebrietas and "Great One" are used interchangeably in the Augur of Ebrietas description as well.
