- In this video, I demonstrates how to get for less then $60 a ham radio microphone with a boom arm and DIY (do it yourself) hand PTT. If you like please subscribe!
Keep in mind that you also need to verify your radio connection prior of connecting a new mic. As an example, Icom rig required a capacitor to prevent shorting the power (+8V DC) straight to ground, without the proper capacitor this could damage your radio.

Nice job. Great video showing how this can be done.
The thing I love about you is, you take the time to reply to comments on your channel, or at least you leave a heart, and that speaks highly of your character. KD9NTD wishing you all the best, 73 my friend
Thank you Kevin, I try too, but sometimes I miss a few... all the best to you as well. 73 my friend.
Great Video ..... Thank you for a real step by step.
I followed your suggestion and got the boom and microphones. Very happy! One issue was the xlr connection at the base of the boom would not fit my heil microphone adapter for my ft-991. Although they are both the 3 pin xlr it was too tight to plug in. I see you cut off that connector and soldered your own connection to the radio. I cut off the xlr and soldered on a higher quality xlr that had a better fit.
Thanks for the great videos! 73 N6JGL
Hi Charles, well thanks for watching and I'm happy it helps. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Great video. I used this video to covert a sewing machine pedal into a foot switch for my 757..
Why not ;-) Thank you.
Love all your videos! I've seen many videos of well-conceived, well-organized shacks. But here's an idea: organizing and storing old ham gear, tools, connectors, skywire, etc OUTSIDE of the shack. Again, well done! Jack, NG2E
I was thinking about getting a boom mic but I got a Heil Pro 7 instead. I use a foot switch for PTT. I do have a Shure mic too but it is not wired. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
I made a similar but I use the ready made Heil headset adapter and since the headset adapter used a 1/4 headphone connector i used a instrument audio cable after cutting 1 end off.
That's another way ;-) Thanks for watching. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Fantastic job on making it simply and inexpensive...

Pascal, another excellent video, 73 de Jim, AB4D. The microphone I use is the Berhinger XM8500, about $20 USD.
Must be similar, the XM1800S is an old version I beleive? 73 Pascal VA2PV
very good video ...73
good video y not use the pins on the 8 pin plug for the ptt as well thats what i did
I have a Johnson's VIKING II transmitter who make 2 pin connector with XLR cable I can use a foot pedal with my boom mic
Hello. Would you know if the Heil CC-1-XLR-K8 cable will work on the Behringer Ultravoice XM8500 for my Kenwood TS-2000?
Woul this set up eork on an i com ic 730?
Great video. I look forward to your videos. I am trying to set up handsfree for my FTM-400XDR and IC-7300. My understanding is the I will not be able to use the same mike for both radios. I will need a dynamic element for the Yaesu model and an electret element for the Icom 7300. I cannot find the NB-35 on Amazon.ca. Do you have other suggestions for the arm and the mics??

Very good video. Thanks for sharing. 73 de N3LUD

I have a yaesu ft 920af wach soukit dos the pluks go into on the back of the yaesu 920af plese let me no its a mixr I'm yousing ? george
is amazing..
what about one XLR microphone with several PTT buttons and several radios? you need a rail? +/-/N?
Great Video! Could this setup be adapted to work with a radio where the mic input is an RJ45 ?
Yes.
Awesome. Can I hook boom mic up to a dual band ham radio like Baofeng uv5r pocket ?
Thank you.
I am not sure as the UV-5R uses a TRS connector on the mic input and it may be a non-standard wiring config for the PTT signalling.
In most likelyhood it's probably just a simple two wire config for the mic and they are just looking for whether or not the circuit is open/closed (connected/disconnected) as the indication of PTT. But it could be more complicated and have a 3rd signal wire for the PTT.
Good evening and congratulations for all these videos that you are making, I have a question I would like to acquire the yAESU FTDX 710 And connect it to a microphone like yours I am asking myself this question to know if this set will be compatible and above all this will not distort modulation When do you think you have any information on a possible adjustment I greet you with my best 73 51 Pascal EST France
Awesome $60 project for a 7k$ radio :-)
No money left for the mic ;-), but this one was for the TS-2000. 73 Pascal VA2PV.
Just kidding with you Pascal! Keep up the good work !!! 73
I know ;-) 73
great content but im confused which socket do you plug the ptt lead into thank you
You need to connect all the connections on the mic plug of your radio, so you will need to find the correct pin for the MIC, the ground, and the PTT. 73
@@Laboenligne thank you i didnt notice the other end of the rca lead you used and the plug that goes into the acc port im all up and running now thanks to you tutorial, thanks for the reply

am buying a new radio the Kenwood TS 890 and I want a suggestion to use the microphone I am in doubt between the Microphone MC90 Kenwood or Heil PR40 ?? I like ssb mode contest 73
That's all depends of your need, I think I would go with the Heil with the cable and the hand PTT. 73 Pascal VA2PV
@@Laboenligne thanks, 73PY2RZ
I need to know how to build a ptt switch for the 6900n can anyone help? Want to use my feed to activate mic
You need to find the PTT and ground Pins on the mic connection, and your foot switch needs to be momentary. On when push and off when release. So, when on you short the two pins to PTT.
NEVER blow on solder to cool it, that creates a "cold solder joint" (no pun intended)
You’re right I now used a danp cloth instead. 73
how good is the behringer mic
Very good for ham radios, when installed properly. 73
question? do i need to use phantom power for this mic
no - it's a dynamic mic
I can't find a pinout for the 1800s.
There is a lot of info via the website below. 73 Pascal VA2PV
www.qsl.net/g4wpw/date.html
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I could not find my question answered on that website. I don't need to know the pinout for the connector to the radio. I did see the XLR connectors mentioned on the website, but, no description as to which pin / wire serves as which function. I just need to know what each of the three XLR wires serve as so that I know which pin to solder them to. I figured considering you performed that task in the video, it would be easy for you to tell me what function pin 1 -3 does instead of providing that website as my question relates to the same 1800s microphone and XLR cable than radio connector specific.
See this website. www.nu9n.com/transceiver_connections.html
Thank you.
amazing job..73? de IZ3SQJ
Excellent video... will try this soon 👍 73, VU3FXE
