    The reason Trusty and Jock offered to marry Lady wasn't because she was traumatized. It was because it was heavily implied that she lost her virginity (and might be pregnant) and back in the 50s that would have been a huge scandal. So they were trying to save her reputation. This of course would fly over the head of most children, but it seems pretty blatant as an adult.

  • @Moonkitti
    @Moonkitti 6 років тому +388

    I had assumed that Trusty and Jock were offering to marry her because of the implication she had lost her chastity
    "Don't worry you're not a virgin anymore, lady, I'll marry you"

      It is. In real life if anything like this would have happened, a woman's reputation and status would dissolve completely. So their proposal is a pretty big deal, considering the context and time period.

    • @eyreyereye
      @eyreyereye 6 років тому +68

      This is the actual reason. You can kinda tell with some of the dialogue. They're pretty much saying that they're willing to take her in, even though now she'd be considered a loose woman.

    This was one of my favorite movies as a child (and tbh still kinda is)!! I only recently rewatched it and oh boiii so much went over my head
    That's really the magic of this movie, it tells a mature-ish story but it's still very entertaining for kids

    One of the things that was a little weird when rewatching this movie was how YOUNG Lady is. She's only about a year old or so for most of it, which is an adult for dogs, but still.
    (It also took me so long to realize that Trusty and Jock are proposing to Lady because they might already know she's pregnant? Or at least that's how that scene comes off to me now.)
    I love hearing you guys talk about the behind-the-scenes in Disney's studios! It's not the kind of thing that you'd normally learn about, so I really enjoy it.

    Jock and Trusty realized that Lady had a one night stand with Tramp and might be preggers. They were trying to marry Lady so that she wouldn't have to be an unwed mother and have fatherless 'bastard' children as society viewed at the time. The reason Jock or Trusty had to propose a rush marriage immediately after the one night stand was so that the timing of the pregnancy would looked like it could have began after the marriage was already in effect -- a proper marriage with no premarital sex. Premarital sex was seen as a sin.
    The implication was that Jock or Trusty would raise Tramp's children as if they were their own, and conceived after marriage. Keeping the shameful events of the night with Tramp a lifelong secret.

    The little tramp scene where he wakes up and stretches and goes under the water was sooo cool to me when I was younger! I would try and recreate it in the shower.... I was a weird child 😂

      Thethree33 AJ Haha! I had tried the re-create a Tom & Jerry scene where Jerry, doing his signature bugging of Tom, is like taking a shower and.. I think, uses Tom's tail (or a towel..) as a towel. I thought it was cool and funny so I'd try and do it ever time I got out of the bath. ^~^

    Fun fact, people who were making the official Polish translation of Lady and the Tramp originally were thinking about translating the main character's names as well. That's why there is a whole bunch of official Disney merchandise in which Lady is called "Zuzia" (Polish for "Susie") and Trampi is "Hultaj" (Polish for "varmint" or "rascal"). I even own one storybook in which they are called that.

    8:33 I read a while back that the reason for Jock and Trusty's proposal is because back in the day, it was very much frowned upon for a woman to become pregnant out of wedlock, and with a "bum" no less. So to protect her image and save her from scrutiny, they would offer to stand in as her husband, so no one would know the truth or raise any eyebrows.
    It was actually an act of wanting to protect and be there for their friend, which I think is really sweet of them. :)
    Oh, and fun fact: Trusty was supposed to die at the end of the film, which is why he looks pretty darn dead after he got ran over, but they decided that would be too sad so they threw him in at the end with only a broken leg.

    As a kid (around 2009) I used to watch this movie almost everyday because I loved it a lot. I fell in love with the characters as a kid and that sort of started me on my art journey. I always drew Lady and Tramp but I never showed them to anybody and nobody knows they exist. The music was my favorite and oh.my.god. the spaghetti kiss scene! The song was my favorite and I would sing along all the time. I did research on the breeds of these two and I actually wanted to get my own Tramp. I actually got a Cocker Spaniel terrier mix and she was my best friend and was a bit like a mixture between Lady and Tramp. She died in February of 2017 sadly.

    you guys saying one night stand finally had it click with me the trusty and jock scene cause as a kid (and older tbh) i was mainly focused on the age gap between the characters and it really creeped me out and i didn't understand why them saying that was okay and sweet or whatever. it's only just now clicking that it's meant to show them offering to save lady the embarassment of being a single mother in that time period
    great film tho, like you guys said i adore animated animal movies that take its subject matter seriously. great review. will prob have to watch this movie again now

    This was one of my mother's favourite Disney films when she was a kid, so I grew up with it too. I'm usually not as huge a fan of animal stories, but Lady and the Tramp is one of the few big exceptions.
    Also, it started my love for the borzoi breed, because for some reason Boris in the pound scene left a huge impact on me as a child. lol

    I love the fact they didn't put any sauce on their spaghetti in the iconic scene as dogs can't eat tomato sauce without getting extremely sick and puking.

    As a kid, I enjoyed the animation and the cute animals and the general romance story.
    Looking baaaaack, the classism, the perspective on a young woman losing her virginity in a one-night stand, family dynamics, ugh, there's just so much I missed and now I have a whole new appreciation for the movie. I also think it's not coincidental that the movie was set in the 1950s... around the same time as the sexual revolution. And Jacques and Trusty made a tongue-in-cheek ruckus over Lady losing her chastity to a rogue off the streets and try to marry her--since they're a part of a more "traditional" generation since they're older... ah, classic Disney.

    • @mikemancini313
      @mikemancini313 4 роки тому +4

      Actually the movie is supposed to take place in 1909 - 1910 but it's heavily sprinkled in with 50s elements. However I have the same appreciation for this movie mainly because it's just so darker once you understand the entire plot. Everything after the Tony's Restaurant scene in the movie really EXTREMELY surprised me in how much I understood it more lol. Like how Lady and Tramp are stargazing and how it cuts to the morning. I now understand the entire premise this movie LOL!

    Jacques and Trusty were proposing to Lady, not because she's traumatized, but because she's pregnant (I dont know how anyone can tell already). They are offering to help raise her kids, but yes, it is a little weird, and they can help without being mates or whatever. But I guess they didn't want her to be ashamed for getting pregnant out of wedlock.

    To be honest, I never enjoyed this movie as a child. I very much preferred the sequel. However, as an adult I have a great appreciation towards this film. It's such an interesting concept making the whole film through a dog's point of view. (Like how the owners don't have actual names outside of what Lady hears them call each other.)
    I can actually enjoy the movie now that I understand all the subtleties and what the plot is actually about. Not just little dogs running around having a romance like I thought as a kid.

    "All live action dog movies are the same two or three stories"
    I haven't seen many I will admit but I watched A Dog's Purpose this morning and thought that was pretty like??? Idk it was a cool premise done pretty well. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for the mood of the trailer which I've watched like a hundred times, or maybe I'm just very over-emotional today and on most days it wouldn't have made me cry like a baby, but... here we are lol
    Idk is that movie's premise not as original as I think it is??? (I know it's based on a book but you know what I mean)

    As a kid, very little scared me more than the rat scene in this movie. Looking at it now, I think what really makes it a *lasting* frightening moment (aside from the dramatic lighting, tone, etc) is how claustrophobic the fight is.
    They're in a closed room, wresting to keep the other opponent close enough to kill, scrambling and stumbling under the furniture... it's a tight fit, and it's personal; the stakes are high, not just for the baby Lady wants to protect or for Tramp's survival, but it's also very personal for us, the audience, who is (visually) kept in close quarters with the fight. The slight lag when the camera "sweeps" after them as the rat tries to escape makes it feel as if we're right there, on their level, hovering on the side lines, unable to jump in and help. It's dramatic and dark, and that makes it stick in the mind loooooooong after you've seen it.

The cast is going to include Tessa Thompson as Lady, Justin Theroux as tramp, Sam Elliott as trusty, Benedict Wong as bull, Ashley Jensen as Jackie, a gender-swapped version of jock, and Janelle Monae as peg. I'd also suggest they'ed get Brenda Song to play si and am, since she's an actual asian actress from Thailand.

    Iiii watched this occasionally as a kid and liked it a fair amount, though having a low attention span as a kid meant i think i usually got bored of this one when it got to an episodic piece of it i didn't care much for.. but since i didn't watch it since pretty young the one night stand and class issues went straaaaiight over my head. really want to check it out again now!!

    ...I assumed that Trusty and Jock offered to marry her because they didn't want her to live in that little dog house but now I'm confused... anyway it is really interesting. I love this movie too!

    Fun fact in the Romanian dub Lady’s name is Doamna which translates to lady. (Kind of like an older woman but still a lady its different)
    And Tramp is Vagabond which literally translates to vagabond (u pronounce it differently btw)

    Are you going to make Shawn watch Plague Dogs for animation pilgrimage? I half found you from your video on Felidae and he seemed pretty adamant on not watching it then (Unless I am remembering completely wrong) so I was just curious

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  6 років тому +4

      You are correct! In that review he really didn't want to watch Plague Dogs, and still isn't too happy about watching it for Animation Pilgrimage, but he's gonna do it! Wish him luck!

      TennelleFlowers Ha ha good luck then Shawn xD
      I watched it myself after watching your Felidae review (and a few other Felidae reviews that mentioned it) and although it does have a few shocking moments I don't think its *to* bad. No spilled unborn kittens at least. But I did like it as a movie, something different from the typical animated things at least.

    Tramp was a cross-breed or bearded Collie.
    Trusty was a Bloodhound and Jock was a Scottie.
