Ironically enough, Orwell also struggled with people thinking the book was for children based on it having talking animals, and several of my high school friends said they couldn't take it seriously because of it when we read it, so it's not so farfetched to think people would perceive that.

When I first got my hands on Animal Farm (the book), I was extremely young. I think I was like 6 or 7. However, I was a child born in Poland in 1991 so I was basically constantly surrounded by the remains of communism and USSR's influence. This book helped me to piece together what had happened before my birth and better understand the world I was living in. That's why Animal Farm will always be dear to my heart. Oh, also, that book made me into a furry, so there's always that.

I never read the book (we didn't read hardly anything my school) and never saw this movie so I watched it before I watched the review and. Well. ........W ell. The whole thing with Boxer actually made me really emotional, with Benjamin screeching that was well done and heart wrenching IT /WAS/ SAD WHEN THE HORSE DIES TENNELLE

Getting into the commentary, it's a shame that the USSR and other communist regimes ruined the image of some of the more effective socialist practices in the West. I don't think it would be impossible to balance out some of these ideals for the benefit of all if people were willing to meet somewhere in the middle.

i actually really enjoy the animation for farmer jones. his movements are so slow and it's kinda unsettling to watch him in comparison to the quick, snappy animations of the other characters. beyond his obvious mistreatment of the animals, it's so easy to get a bad feeling when you see him on screen

actually, Karl Marx created communism, Lenin formed the Soviet Union, Trotsky was supposed to become leader, but Stalin took over. Also, the soviet union was always a dictatorship.

Fun fact, Trotskys grandson is a Trot, also did an interview where he tells the story of his grandfathers assassination by the Stalinist agent.
While I an an AnCom I do lament Stalin taking over the USSR, Trotsky was not saint but he truly cared for the workers and wanted to establish a worker's state (while not perfect at least he would've actually maintained a workers democracy and eventually ended the state Capitalist economy of the USSR in favor of a Socialist one)

      Northflower
      fun fact:
The song is literally just The Internationale with different lyrics, the tune fits perfectly and L'Internationale has been translated and adapted so many times it is really the only song that is representative of nearly every branch of Leftism (which is to say it isn't licking Stalin's boot or a super specific one made for a certain local movement)

    • @sabotabby3372
      @sabotabby3372 6 років тому +4

Northflower also if you like Orwell I suggest reading his memoirs, Homage to Catalonia, it shows how he went from an idealistic young freedom fighter in the international Brigades to an anti Soviet Socialist because of how badly the Tankies back stabbed the CNT/FAI and Republicans in the war.
At the end of the war when the fascists were about to win the moderates and Marxist-Lenninists negotiated peace with Franco and the fascists (only to be Slaughtered after the war by his regime) while the Anarchist Communists and Syndicalists, even those volunteers from the US, Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and many other nations, fought to the last man only to be crushed by German panzers fueled by American oil as the Soviets pulled out their meager forces and claimed it to be the fault of the Anarchists
Thats still a major divide between authoritarian and libertarian Socialists today (as well as all the other BS like in Tiananmen Square, Hungary, and the DDR where they crushed peaceful protests by Socialist groups for being "enemies of the revolution"), because of that the only authoritarian and libertarian Socialists that get along are those that both oppose the Stalin's regime and the later liberalization of the USSR, or those who have a very lose grasp on history and theory and don't know about these rifts or their significance
Seeing as the most important factor for being in a left is a knowledge of history and plenty of historical analysis, that's basically limited to DeLeonists, Trotskyites, LeftComs (who basically just sit in their armchairs and study Marx nonstop), and anarchists plus a few outliers like Democratic Confederalists (like the SDF in Syria), and the Neozapatista movement in Chiapas Mexico (weird but cool mix of old land distribution politics, Marxism, Anarchist tendencies and practice, and lots of native Americans and Mexicans tired of having a corrupt and incompetent Neoliberal government that sends all the nation's wealth to the US)

As a huge fan of both animation and Orwell, I have been waiting for this episode since the beginning. The history behind this movie is really interesting, and I’m glad that you guys delved into it :D
One thing worth noting is that in the book, the farm actually IS portrayed as worse- they comment in the last chapter that the animals are fed the least and work the hardest out of every farm. However, here is the interesting thing- the other farms (which are directly supposed to represent the US and Germany) state that they want to implement some of Animal Farm’s tactics in their own farm. This felt like the case at the end of World War 2; before things went to hell, the US actually seemed to like communism. Orwell wrote the book as a warning to other countries to not give in to government propaganda if they try to push a particular agenda, because you will end up like Russia. He was trying to say that giving into fear is a bad thing. And by making this a propaganda film, the US is doing exactly what Orwell was trying to prevent.
After all, Americans, you don’t want communism to come back, right?

I'm so glad you guys are tackling this film. I had no idea about all of the politics behind the making of the film, but its really interesting to be hearing this. Animal Farm is one of my favorite books, but I agree with it being taught at too young an age. I certainly never got any of the politics behind it when I read this in 7th and then 9th grade (doesn't help that we didn't really learn the politics side of things in an interesting way that stuck with us)

I most definitely didn't understand politics in 7th grade, I didn't even understand my own parents political views at the time and I was homeschooled! I can't believe kids are watching this that young, I've only gotten exposed to it now that I'm older and understand what it's saying. I was also a pretty sensitive kid and probably would have been scarred for life. Dark, heavy stuff doesn't effect me now like it did back then and even now it makes me feel super depressed.

oh nice new art!! The animation is smooth and made me do a double take with how good it was. I kinda wish some of the concept art stuff was larger--I really enjoy looking at concept art though so that might just be me.
Now for video--I have never ever heard of this book(or the movie). Like ever?? I don't know if it's because of who my teachers were but I think my schools growing up let the individual teachers have more control over what the taught as long as they filled the criteria: like books that students read or so on. Or they just don't care about anything that isn't STEM here, idek.

I beat its blocked in Russia, I remember Watching the movie and reading the book, in 11th grade. At the time I enjoyed the movie, and got the whole commie bad thing. But something my teacher didn't teach me was that the CIA was involved and I didn't catch all the underlining messages in this movie.

I like to imagine the cute little duckling character growing up to be that exact same duck Napoleon ordered the execution of by attack dog along with the sheep and chickens...😈
