Lyrics:
Show yourself
Show yourself
I want to see everything you're made of
Tear it down and rip it out
Shed your skin and float it down the river
Lose yourself
Lose yourself
Wild horses ride you through the valley
Come alive
Come alive
Sail into the void without your worries
You're not as safe as far as I can tell
And I can tell
Only you can save yourself
Soon this will all be a distant memory
Or could this dream be real at all?
Stars align
Stars align
Stars can fall and get you into trouble
Be afraid
Don't be afraid
Speak the ancient wisdom of the desert
You're not as safe as far as I can tell
And I can tell
Only you can save yourself
Soon this will all be a distant memory
Or could this dream be real at all?
Show yourself
Show yourself
I wanna see everything you're made of
Reveal yourself
Reveal yourself
The truth will send a ripple through your body
See your fate
You'll see your fate
Death will come and steal you from the living
Dead and gone
Dead and gone
I'll see you on the other side of fire

Record companies: You need to take your videos seriously
Mastodon: No
Fellow Traveler the motherload video
I dont understand
love is video....it makes the song even better
are you saying you dont like it
Yes! exactly.. they work so hard and put "All" of themselves Into their Songs, the have earned the right to mess around in their Videos.
You Mastodon fans are amazing. Instead of hating because they make a somewhat different music than before, you guys appreciated what Mastodon has produced and kept on supporting them. Cheers!
Pretty much just because Mastodon is one of the most mainstream metal bands around today and have a shitload of fanboys.
null father I didn't even realize how bad it was until they were telling people to go fuck themselves because of a song. They act like they are the better people too.
+WeShall4ttack Yeah. Somebody in an ultimate guitar forum.
That's how it was.
That's how it is.
That's how it will be.
What I love about mastodon, they're always changing
Everyone saying this is a weak song but for me it’s one of their most catchy ones. Love it.
Yes, yes sir they do 🤘👹
and they created a hilarious video to boot!
I don’t get people. There’s nothing wrong with this song. As a matter of fact it hits hard! It slaps! I just don’t get people. This is one of my favorite mastodon songs
And if you know the inspiration for Emperor is sand, it fits perfectly. Big middle finger cancer and death.
@@swisscheeseplease97 People get scared when a band they like doesn't create something they expect to hear. Similar with a lot of art forms or products. Happens often to filmmakers and actors, too. If you try to step out of your perceived "role" you get a bunch of whiners.
Still blows my mind when the drummer sings and can pull off killer beats and fills! I'll never get sick of seeing these guys live! \m/
atreyu does the same thing
😂😂😂❤
I saw Mastodon for the first time in Finland at TUSKA 2016. Just the same as you felt, I was astonished when Bran the drummer started singing.😊
I was with my friends from India, Brasil, Ukraine, Russia and everyone was happy. I miss that day ...😢
@@bradhaines3142 atreyu drummer sucks ballz compare to mastodon
I've heard their vocals are a bit rough live. When you record nowadays in the studio, you usually don't play your instrument and sing at the same time (since over-dubbing is a thing)
I fucking love that on every album cycle these guys could have easily made another Leviathan or Blood Mountain but they instead go with where they are at in their lives and try something new. "Yeah we used to make pulverizing crusty behemoths, now we are making a concept album with a power-pop tune - if you don't like it, there are plenty of other bands out there".
Word!
agree
Well said.
Exactly, also smdh, people seem to totally forget that taste is subjective as fuck! I genuinely love Remission and this new stuff, they both make me happy - it is possible to like varying types of music people.
fucking elitists
If this is their "worst song", they must have one hell of a catalog..
Fazlur Karim first four albums are near perfect
Yeah, a lot of people just don't get whats happening when stuff is trickled out before an official release. They're not gonna start off with the strongest piece and proceed toward the weakest, they start with the weakest and proceed to the strongest (in their own opinion). And this piece, even if it's relatively the weakest, is still fine with me - I like it.
All of their albums are amazing, just their last 2 are a bit weak. But still amazing
Leviathan is still hands down my favorite album.
Ditto for The Hunter. Their worst album. Still a nice album, I love it!

Fuck'n A
What did they mean with "the other side of fire"?
How the fuck have I not heard of these guys till the month leading up to Emperor of Sand? Regardless, finding a new favorite band is one of the best feelings.
I'm glad you've got the chance to hear music that used to be on the radio and appreciated. Today rock isn't exposed to younger generations like it once was and it's a shame. I'm hoping people like you will take this opertunaty to open other ear's and start a trend that will put rock back on the chart's. Enjoy it my friend.
Good, listen to "Leviathan" and "Once More 'Round The Sun". Those are their best albums by far.
AntonioKowatsch thats not how you spell "Crack the Skye" and " Blood Mountain"
Nice one mate. I remember when I first heard them too and how great it was discovering a new band. The best part is every album they release is the same feeling all over again.
I had the good fortune of seeing them the summer after they released Leviathan at a place in Jacksonville called Jackrabbits. The place holds like 150 people tops. They blew the roof off the joint. I saw Unearth there a few weeks later. Holy shit....
Funny how everyone is saying they hate this song but I love it to death, it's so catchy, what's not to like?
It doesn't have anything that I listen to Mastodon for: killer riffs, agile track structure, hard-ass vocals, etc.
Eddie everyone who ?
it's a great song
Just a bunch of hipster trash who dislike it
No, it would be the casuals/hipsters that LIKE it.
1:11 Comic sans font? :D I love this video.
me too
You beat me to it :D
This song literally gets stuck in my head at least once a day.
To me the main riff is so goddamn good. It’s simple but that’s why it’s so beautiful
I had to pause this video 4 times because I was laughing so hard. I will always appreciate when bands bring camp into their videos and Mastodon are the kings of it.
yeah, also bands like twelve foot ninja... they do awesome videos too!, I recomend..
Camp?
@@cygnuscraft9544 I believe it means theatrics and nonsense i.e. funny pointless videos lol
@MementoMori Love the Name! Be mindful of death.
Could only be made better if they'd somehow snuck in the actor who played Death in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
theyre really being blunt with the whole death theme
MTSpade I can't see it.
This song rocks, and I love the perspective of the lyrics. The narrator seems to be a grim reaper or deity like in the music video, wanting humans to prove themselves. It’s also amazing live when Brann sings.
Fun fact: In lore the Reaper doesn't decided who lives or dies. Nor is he there to judge you. His job is to guide the soul to were ever it is meant to go. That's why i never understood why people make him out as a gloomy guy. Not his fault you died. Maybe we are wrong and he is the coolest SOB out there. Maybe get to have a few beers with him before we head off to eternity.
Face expressions of the grim reaper are fucking priceless :D
If I had a hundred dollars every time my wife asked me to get my scythe off the dinner table...but seriously...after listening to this once, I was like meh. And now, I cannot stop dancing and singing the lyrics. I love that its a bit different. For those saying this is terrible, get off your high horse and expand your minds. Not everyone is gonna pull a Cannibal Corpse and make the same exact music for decades. This song is still Mastodon...its just super groovy. It might not be Blood Mountain or Leviathan, OBVIOUSLY, but you can tell its them. Its a fun little track, and this music video is awesome. Love you guys. Thanks for the great music.
And the granny giving the bird to Death made my day. I think that should be a t-shirt at the merch booth.
Absolutely this song is a grower. Kind of like The Motherlode. I really disliked it when I first heard it but now I like it.
This is my first time looking at Mastadon as far as I can tell, and I'm more of a Deathcore-Thrash guy, but this is sick song, has a wicked vibe to it
I just went and had a look at Black Mammoth. I was almost going to not look at them, but I'm glad I did, it's the kind of Deathcore I do really like cheers mate. You might like Aversions Crown if you're interested
Glad you like the video, I had a blast working on it!
Me too. SO much fun doing the makeup!
Heard this song the other day and had to double-check to be sure it wasn't Queens of the Stone Age.
Death trying to hunt down a group of people and keep accidentally killing the wrong people and only getting it right on accident has to be a show.
Of the three songs from the album so far, Sultan's Curse and Andromeda are both heavy. This one song is lighter and catchier and everyone loses their minds.
it's not about being heavy, it's about being inspired. They sound exacly like queens of the stone age here
What is wrong with Queens of the Stone Age?
Actually they are really good, so good that they stole their sound
except that QOTSA doesnt have one specific sound. I cant even place them into a genre because every album is completeky different and evolves. Just like mastodon. But I wouldnt say either band sounds like one or the other. They both just continuously evolve
QOTSAs guitars are way more melodic. Josh really likes to let notes ring by comparison. Mastadon sounds punchier in my opinion. Though I can hear a hint of QOTSA here.
I really like this song.
#praisethesun
this is the first time I've seen this music vid and omg it's hilarious.
I love this band. Mastodon never disappoints
I just saw these guys in OKC with Lorna Shore and Gojira. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life, they rock so hard. Mastodon is like a 3 headed dragon with their 3 vocalists with super unique styles so you can recognize all of them independently in the song and it's SO FUCKING COOL
Fckin brian posehn, this dude is subtly everywhere
Everyone should realize that Mastodon's music needs to be listen like a minimun of 3 times in order to your body and mind to assimilite what you heard, (it happened to me with every album), but then, oooooohhhh, then comes the fucking pleasure.
That's how all music works, but it's especially how pop shills get people into pop music: repetition. It's basically brainwashing.
you totally misunderstood the point i was trying to make...
Which was?
I was talking about Mastodon especifically, it had nothing to do with the pop brainwashing that you are refering to.
It's the same thing. It functions on exactly the same psychological principle. The more you listen to something, the more you learn what to expect. This creates tension and release when you listen to it again, which is satisfying.
Mastodon: Remember that game Grim Fandango?
Record label: Yes, vaguely
Mastodon: Well, do I have a treat for you
Reminds me I need to finish that, beautiful game
GREAT rock n roll tune, nice to sing along during live events. Honestly when it first came out it felt like a breath of fresh air from Mastodon.
Cool part referencing the scene from Glengarry Glen Ross
Agreed.. and, on a slightly-less sophisticated movie note, the nod to one of the Final Destinations.... Dig the song too, good shit fellas!
The seventh seal reference had me rolling.
Conrad Crawford Awesome movie!
I got three words for ya, Bill and Teds Bougus Journey.
Funny, that's exactly what the director said he wanted for the main Grim Reaper.
Fuck, man. This shit is good. Maybe this isn't "Leviathan" Mastodon or even "Crack The Skye" Mastodon, but one thing's for sure, its fuckin Mastodon. They are among the best musicians in the genre, and that's something the haters refuse to realize. I'd like to see them in the studio with the band telling them how to put together an album just so they could laugh in their face and tell them to fuck off. Enjoy the music or keep quiet!
"among the best musicians in the genre"? lol
"Enjoy the music or keep quiet". Yeah, wouldn't want any slightly critical opinions, would we?
I promise you, no one in the metal music industry gives a fuck about a fan's critical opinions. Bands like Mastodon make music that they wanna hear, not music that the fans wanna hear. Anyone can criticize a band, it's the easiest fucking thing to do. But not everyone can actually make music like this. This isn't a fucking service to the fans. That shit belongs in pop music. That's why you just take a band for the music they put out or just don't listen to them. And what's so funny about saying they're among the best in the genre? I certainly cannot even think to make music like this. Can you?
I didn't say that they do or should care about my opinion.
I haven't paid for any of their music since The Hunter, which drove me out away from seriously listening to them.
I don't and don't need to make music to have a valid opinion.
lol
+null father You're literally bitching about the band on every comment you can claiming you haven't enjoyed the since The Hunter. You're entitled to criticism, but why do you care so much??? You claim to be done with them, that they're dead, but you can't let them go.
I listen to pretty much any metal. Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about them and having a negative opinion doesn't mean that it's somehow hypocritical to talk about them.
I did let them go with The Hunter. Stopped paying for any of their music.
lol
This song has lived rent free in my head for years. Shit is so catchy
Nah but every time my dad turns this song on, I instantly start singing it. I've been listening to this since I was 4 or smth.
I really like that Mastodon is trying something new with their music. It's quite enjoyable :)
I love it actually
This is "Emperor of Sand"'s "Oblivion". All the other songs are more proggy. All the metal elitists are pissed off because there's one song that's catchy as hell, but everyone else realizes how amazing this record is as a whole. If the whole album sounded like "Show Yourself", I could agree with the elitists, but that ain't the case. Mastodon just upped their game for the 6th time in my opinion.
Oblivion is proggy...the tempo changes always chill me. It has that chorus, but the song structure is pretty proggy. I like Oblivion, but not much this.
XD Oblivion is proggy as hell, mate - what are you talking about? This is pretty much blues-rock. Don't say I hate the track but this and Oblivion are worlds apart.
"Metal elitists". Could you at least TRY to represent the critics fairly instead of just dismissing them? To me and a lot of others, Emperor of Sand sounds like a watered down version of what Mastodon typically does. I feel like anyone could've wrote this song, and that's a first for me. Am I an elitist now?
I read mountains of shit about this album, about it being " really poppy " and " bland ".
I started to listen to Mastodon' music (like, their discography) like 2 weeks ago, i knew about them because of " Leviathan " (an album i really loved) years ago. And on my way listening to their albums, i really was avoiding this album because of the " true fans criteria ".
I listen to like 3 songs of Emperor of Sands and you know what i have to say?? I have to say that you, " true fans ", you " experts ", are just whiny idiots that want this band to make Leviathan and Remission 100 times.
If you thing that any crappy band on the fetid actual metal/rock scene can write a song the way Mastodon do it, then i have to say, FUCK OFF.
Except Oblivion is experimental as hell, dissonant chords, complex time signatures, different vocal lines done by different members . This is just a fairly straight forward rock song, if anything it's this album's "High Road" and there is nothing wrong about that.
I don't always listen to mastodon but when I do, my neighbors do too
YAAAASSSSS-todon
Same lol
In all songs huh
Mine threw a brick through my window so they could hear it better.
Werd bra.
The old man flipping off death, haha. You tell him old timer, do not gently go into that good night.
Mastodon is my favorite band. Really digging this track. The band proves once again they are constantly evolving.
Haha, what?
I don't dislike or hate the song at all, but to say this is 'evolving' is a real stretch. Its one of their most simplistic songs to date.
What's the difference between evolving and selling out? Just asking!
Also check out gojira! Magma album 🔥🔥
devolving*. go listen to leviathan and come back to this and tell me how you could possibly recommend this crap compared to that.

I love how this song just starts with no buildup as the second song. It's such a good representation of like the shocked indignation of the traveler/patient receiving their death sentence (exile/cancer)
I don't care if I'm not supporting them anymore. THIS is a totally different kind of music than what Mastodon was. It's understandable for old fans to not like them now.
Still a killer song after all these years
Does this remind anyone else of Grim Fandango?

More riffs and much more stone stuff
If you like this, tune into any local rock station and you'll find plenty of similar things.
I completely disagree with you. This isn't radio rock friendly. I highly doubt this would get any if at all radio play. It's too complex for radio listeners with attention spans of that of a fly.
Azwethinkweizso I heard this on my local station today. Same with Motherload when that came out.
too complex? are you kidding me?
Not only do Mastodon rock the shit, they have lots of fun with their music videos.

LumberNick330 Damn straight. I'm a new Mastodon fan & I prefer foot-tapping, melodious tunes that I can sing along with, rather than listening to growling & screaming. I'm also a Nothingface fan & I just don't listen to the heavier songs that I don't enjoy. We don't have to 100% love every song a band releases. 😊

I think what makes Mastodon so good is that you still get a taste of every old album in every new album. They are continually trying to evolve the sound and make each album unique! I hope they continue to change there sound each album even if I do not like the direction!

That «you’re not safe as far as I can tell, and I can tell» cracks me the heck up
I liked it on first listen, now after a few more listens...I like it even more. It's an ear worm. Mastodon has been consistent with great material ever since their inception. Yes, their sound and direction has changed but so has many other great bands. You can't pigeonhole yourself musically and artistically. As a musician myself, I play a genre of music that is far from what I enjoy listening too. It's maturity. Good music is good music. Plain and simple. I'm a metalhead through and through and guess what? I also love me some Jamiroquai, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. Shoot me.
