2.8l,or 173 blue motor is the best to hold big power , they used a 202 core casting for it , bored to 80thou fits stock 202 pistons and still has way thicker bore walls than a 202 , perfect for supercharging or turbo applications . Trouble is there getting hard to find now aswell. I'm sure over the years there's been plenty of mean combos built , I guess its all about trial and error This ute is certainly packing heat , awesome car, awesome sound Credit to the owner
202 is longer stroke so more torque. Big bores are a waste of time. Bores flex to much. Early red blocks are the best. Provided they are not rusted out!
In my experiance a 202 dosent seem to last , can anyone elaborate on that ? I am running a genuine x2 179 in my fj , street , can someone please put the issue to rest once and for all , other than the twin carbies , was there anything else , cheers [ dont want to stir up shit , again ]
I have heard that before. 202 used lower quality parts than the earlier engines. seen a few blocks crack. could be why this guy is running a 186. better quality casting perhaps.
The 202 is not as nice an engine as the 179 186. BUT will make more power. The 1/4 of extra stroke says that. Not only horsepower but big torque gains as well. For the average budget racer forget the short stroke engine. You will struggle to get a decent piston. 202s offer quite a range of off the shelf and semi custom. Long rod, std rod as well as rods to suit. Buget ACL race series pistons on shotpeened blue rods, decent cam and balance it properly. Loctite the flywheel bolts, in fact loctite every bloody bolt!! Centre bolt the crank so the balance does not bail off. And a decent race style balancer. But even a stock old gunker with twin carbs and extractors the 202 makes more power and torque.

In near 50 years of playing with Holden 6s I have had plenty drop the head off of a piston, and in a couple of cases then saw the block in half! 161, 179 186 and 202. I have seen plenty of cracked blocks but have never had one.. I once saw the side literally fall out of a block on a GpN EH. But the engine ran perfectly to drive if onto the trailer.

@@T1000AX Luck of the draw. Back in the day more than a few 186 blocks in standard form cracked under the manifolds into the cooling jacket.
