Hey Henry, great video! In around 3 weeks ill be traveling to Japan myself and im thinking about getting a watch and even maybe my first Rolex. Please could you specify where is or how is the last shop you show in this video called? They have really amazing prices and affordable Rolex there.
Henry: Do you find the watch prices are lower in person at the Japanese stores; rather than what is advertised on the various Nagano / Ueno/Shinjuku store websites? For example, I'm planning to visit Kamekichi and Jack Road's other stores in person later this month, but am curious about in-store prices (excluding taxes and shipping) rather than prices shown on their Japanese websites. I do know there may be a small discount in person, if paid in Yen, rather than a credit card @ some stores. I clearly, know about non-negotiation from person to person, and know Japan's fine culture very well. Your videos are awesome and educational. Many thanks!
It’s a great pleasure Mike. Thank you very much for your comments. Your question is also fantastic. I have never actually checked the shop websites. I know Jack Roads has a website because they’re one of the biggest sellers but as far as the other sellers here, I just didn’t think to have a look at their website. I would say an analysis can be done to support this question.. and that could be a purpose of a future video, so I really appreciate your asking. Will put it on my to do list before I plan my next trip to Japan so I can do the comparison work.
Henry: Thank you for your kind response. About an hour ago, I sent an email to a reputable high end shop in Nagoya - asking if prices are different btw their website vs in person at the shop. Net for this watch biz, it is the same. My hunch now, it is for all shops, unless catch a sale for the day. Shops response to me : “ The prices shown in our website will be the same in our store, for payments made in cash. In case you come to our store, it is possible to pay by credit card but we would like to inform you that a 2.7~5% handling charge would occur if the payment is done by credit card. Also, for watches delivered within Japan, we will have to charge the Tax in price.”
My pleasure I’m glad you enjoyed my video. I actually can’t wait to go back to Tokyo for another visit and this time I’d also like to visit Osaka to see what they have to offer for us watch fans.
I can’t speak specifically to Cartier, but I can tell you that all of the Rolex watch shops in Nankano Broadway stock other brands as wellfor sure and you will find many nice watche. But please be aware that most of the watches on offer are used, although many are of recent years .. these are mostly used watch shops if you are only looking for brand new watches, then you’ll have to go to the Cartier dealer and I’m not sure where that is in Tokyo.
Nakano broadway has everything, best vintage in Shinjuku has a good selection of pre owned watches, and just google watch shops and you’ll find a bunch of stuff all over
Henry, the prices seem to be competitive, but can you tell if the watches are authentic? Was the store able to make you comfortable that the Rolexes are authentic and not Frankenwatches?
I am not a expert able to see if the insides of a watch are Frankenwatches or not. So for me, it comes down to purchasing from dealers that I’ve purchased from in the past. Which is what I did this time. If you’re buying a fairly new watch from a reputable dealer, I’d say chances are slim of it being a Franken watch, but like anywhere else it’s buyer beware. If you’re not comfortable with the seller it’s best not to purchase. As I’ve said in other comments, if you deal with the largest of the dealers here that have been in business for decades, risk of issues decline in my opinion.
Firstly, I’m wishing you an excellent trip to Tokyo. I know you’re going to love it, specially the sushi if you’re a sushi fan like me .. and of course the Rolex watches are over the top. OK great question regarding the Rolex Batman / Batgirl watch. Inthis video, you will see at least one of these beauties, and it was actually a Batman watch and it was listed with a tax-free price of ¥2.3 million which is about US$15,500. This was a fairly new watch probably a year or two old so this should give you an idea of the going price in Japan. This is the tax-free but I can’t speak to the price difference between the Batman and Batgirl for the different bracelet type. I suspect they’re quite similar. Perhaps you could let me know how you do once you get home from your trip as I’d love to hear how you make out there. Good luck !! .. and safe travels.
I’m very confident they would buy custom watches. I see no reason why they wouldn’t. You just have to take the watch there and visit each of the dealers and see what they have to say. I’d be quite shocked if there is no Rolex dealer there that would entertain the purchase of your watch
This is an excellent time to go to Japan specially for Rolex watch hunting because of the Japanese recession. The Japanese yen is st a depressed level against all currencies and the local Rolex fans don’t have the budget to be soaking up all the excess inventory ..so prices are good for more than one reason.
If you are investing you should buy 5 of the strapless ones as long as you don't get pinged for tax at the boarder or coming home. Picking up suitable genuine straps should be easy?
What arcade is this ? Sorry I might have missed the name😑 we are travelling to Tokyo on 29th Feb - cant wait to get onto my first rolex. Thanks in advance
It is called Nankano Broadway .. if you make it to Tokyo you’ll be very happy you visited this place. Please leave me a comment and let me know how you make out I’d love to hear.
Hello! Thank you for this video! It is very helpful. How do I recognize legit second-hand seller? Is there some list for Japan? I wan to buy some Rolex in Osaka this year.
Is it possible to pay no taxes in Japan? I don’t wanne pay double taxes.,how much % will the price get lower? I live in the Netherlands and have to pay 21%
I was amazed to find brand new Rolex readily available in Japan last month. Everything from date just to sub. In the UK we have to go onto a list with a wait of potentially years. In Japan you can just buy one at Bic Camera dept stores. WTF is going on
The newer ones of course are more expensive than several years old models .. but if you look at my video carefully, I think you’ll see that they’re around $15,000 USD. So they are not particularly cheaper than in the UK Europe, or the United States and Canada. Certain Rolex watch models are significantly cheaper in Japan but I don’t think the Pepsi is one of them.
The prices and availability in Europe and North America are confusing: No available watches unless you are on the inside. And secondary prices are a rip off.
Agree. Grey market sitting on tens of thousands of Rolexes at ridiculous markups (and will sit for months) because the company won’t kill off flipping out the back door of their ADs. Which they could easily do.
You could easily buy several watches. In my part 3 video you will see I made a purchase. I think across the board the prices are 25% cheaper than US/UK/Europe.
If you view my video, you’ll see exactly where I purchased my watch and that’s a place that I like doing business with. But you can walk around Nakano Broadway yourself .. look at the watches that are available .. and know that most of these stores have been in business for a very long time. So I’d say it’s kind of a question of availability and your own feel of comfort level with each store.
My answer would be that Japan gets a disproportionate larger share of Rolex production compared to North America and Europe so the dealers there have more watches per capita, and due to the economic situation in Japan there’s less people clamoring to buy them. so the local market has a larger supply and a smaller demand ratio than in North America and Europe. This would be my guess. It also helps matters that the Japanese Yen is at historic Lows.

99 percent of the people watching this video are North American, from the Uk and European. Our culture is not the same as the Japanese. It is my belief that the Japanese culture does not support a mindset of cheating people or buying fakes. It is not in their DNA. I’m with you. Not worth the risk. You’re still a foreigner and would have no recourse. And except for a few pieces the grey market is as silly there as back home. The JPN economy is in the tank and prices still not coming down.
