The dead trees were burned in 1988 White Cloud wildfire. I was going from fire to fire with my fire crew. We were traveling to a forest fire northwest of there but Hwy. 20 was closed because of the fire. When our fire was out we came back over Sherman Pass.
I grew up there and went to school there, then went into the military and not much work in Republic, so went west now living in Port Orchard Washington
I found my wedding cake topper at the little bakery in Republic 25 years ago. Also Tonasket is pronounced Toe- nas- ket. Washington State cities names at least half are Native America names. So most people have no clue how to pronounce them unless you have lived in Washington. If you would have headed towards Wilbur you would have been only about 23 miles from my hone town.
Another great video I love every bit of it even the sand and gravel scattering upon drone landing along with your interesting, kind and calm commentary. Thank you. 💞
This is very good , and you are traveling in country i like to drive through and explore .. Neat landscape to see and it's everywhere .. very well done ..
Love the "keep the cameras run" I see so many others that I can't stay with because they are in paradise and all they show is their faces... that's ok but I would like to see the views too! Nice Job Russ
Republic is an old gold mining town; lots of "chunnels and tunnels" under the town. Be careful. The town is probably one of the last affordable areas in the NW without a lot of other drama to put up with. I'd live there.
I live in Republic. This was fun to watch and hear your commentary on my home area. Tonasket is pronounced Ton-ask-et. Boneparte Lake Report area is beautiful and worth a visit. The lake is beautiful, there is a restaurant, cabins, and R.V. sites. There is a trail up the mountain where you can hike up and have the most incredible view all the way down the valley and lake. Unfortunately that mountain burned last summer, and due to the flooding from all the rain, homes and vehicles were lost to mudslides.
Still excitedly awaiting each and every video. You have made these last few days more enjoyable. Still having so much wonderful time watching all of your videos. Really enjoying this vacation. Better that staying isolated and along. Just isolated. Will be so glad when this planned demic is over. Have a wonderful night.
🙋♀️Hello Russ! Perfect weather for our Virtual Vacation. Beautiful blue skies, beautiful green trees, beautiful mountains. Nice little towns we've passed through. I hope you found a nice place & get to rest good. 👍
I'm stuck in Australia right now due to covid but I would have been driving the U.S. especially Washington national Parks right now, your high def footage is helping me not go insane. Much appreciated.
Hey Russ, Big Wave....We were just watching you go through Republic and down hwy 20 to Hwy 97 near Tonasket, and do you know what...........You were only 30 miles away from us....We live on the Okanagan River, just north of Omak and Orville, and how come your videos have no smoke? We have been covered in by thick smoke for about 4 days now. Your videos look so clear. It doesn't even look like there is a fire, but Omak has a big one, and Orville has a big one....so both are blowing north from the South winds, right into our Little twon of Osoyoos, and we are gonna have smoke Whine this year....LOL But we want to say thank you so much for your share of Hwy 2, 20 and now 97...Very much our stomping grounds, and isn't it beautiful? We are watching Russ and wish you safety and stay safe completely from this virus....The Cascades beautiful too....This whole area, is mind boggling beautiful. This is truly downhill all the way...YOu will have to go uphill again...through the Cascades....We are traveling with you on your Virtual holiday....You are not alone, and don't you feel you are, as Colin and I are with all the way....Speak Later Russ...Take care...Carolyn and Colin Hogarth Osoyoos B.C, Canada...Big hugs to everyone...
He must be doing the delayed videos ? I got back from the oregon coast to wenatchee on friday night and it was already socked in with smoke so he must of came thru last Wednesday or Thursday?
I was wondering about the timing too. I'm in western WA and the smoke over here has been brutal for the last few days. We even have fires in the median along Hwy 167 for those of you familiar with the area.
I have loved growing up in Washington state. The views are absolutely gorgeous! I can't wait to see your video tonight. I hope you missed all the smoke! Marble Mount is full of smoke right now including most of Washington. The Cascades are my favorite place to camp. Be safe and enjoy the ride!
We are heading for Bonaparte Lake Resort Friday for 7 nights in a primitive log cabin. We first stayed there when I was building a fire lookout above Cerlew north of Republic in 1988. We have been back many times since. It’s over 400 miles from where we live. You were six miles away where you took a break. I have been in the area many times on wildfires.
Good evening Russ, From the looks of the viewers comments we are a little worried about where you are exactly! Just want to make sure you are safe and sound. I googled hwy 20 from Republic to Whidbey Island awesome drive can't wait for your video of it! Be safe. See You Soon!
Good evening Russ, you will like the Cascades very pretty this time of year. Thank you for all your work putting the videos together for everyone . Be safe in the Cascades Bear Country... Take Care Larry & Linda
Thanks for memories, I worked on a US Forest Service fire engine crew there in the summer of 1978. I live in a tent just North of the town by Curlue Lake. Thanks 👍
Hahaha I went to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in Republic, Washington! It represents a particularly profound part of my childhood experience, still, to this day. (My first girlfriend, my first fist fight, etc.) You start driving by my school at about 8:50 (on the left) The elementary school is located downtown, (on the left at about 11:15) from kindergarten to 5th grade, and the rest of what in most cities would be middle school and high school are both together in that one campus there, just outside of the downtown area, where you passed at about 8:50. I ran track and field at that sports field down the hill on the left that you can see there. (It's also where the football, soccer and baseball fields are.) It doesn't look like much has changed in the last 30 years or so lol of course, it was only the late 80's, early 90's when I lived there. 😎👍 Edit; and yes. Everybody knows everyone else there. You got that right. And, there are MANY old abandoned mine shafts up in the hills around town there. Logging and Mining were the two main industries there, in Republic. When you're a young, adventurous preteen/teenage boy with your buddies in a town as small as Republic, there isn't much to do besides exploring the surrounding area, old mine shafts, trails, etc. And, when something new would come out, like the newest pair of Nike's or the latest album from the band you like, or even the latest fashion trends, it always took about a year or two before it would make its way out there to store shelves. (This was about a decade before the internet, of course.) The nearest, "modern" city was Spokane. Everything else was just other small, "blink and you'll miss them" towns, like Republic, peppered throughout the forest. On quiet days you can hear the sirens echoing across the mountains and valleys in the distance up at the Canadian border. It was great, especially compared to living here, in Everett, Washington where I am now. Even though its where I was born and mostly raised, Everett is just North of Seattle, so we're much more in the, "rat race." It would be nice to go visit Republic again someday, SO many memories, man. Thanks for the upload. 👍😇
@@robertallen6710because it’s an adrenaline inducing experience and significant - why wouldn’t you remember it? i remember my first fist fight, most men have this experience
Nice drive Russ. There five paved roads which cross the Cascades in Washington. 20 is the north route and they close it for four to five months every winter. US 2, I-90, and US12 cross farther south and Washington 14 is on the Columbia river from Vancouver to Umatilla. Washington is a big state.
You must have driven right through where I live, Kettle Falls on this trip. You referred to being in NW Washington several times on your video but you were actually driving in NE Washington. NW Washington is generally from the cascades west.
When was this filmed we haven't had blue sky in a week or more now. Nothing but thick smoke. And yes I'm close to republic and can see the top sherman from my house when there's no smoke
Well the air quality at Republic is at a dangerous level today so.... it would be my guess you are "bout a week behind on your editing, that about right??? Here in the Yakima valley it has been twilight and ABOUT 70 DEGREES all day, so I would guess the area around Republic must be about the same, seeing as how we're under the same dangerous sky!!!! I hope I am right about the editing and you are long gone outta here!!! Cause sure as God made little green apples, it ain't safe to be here... See ya
He has to be: We're in Canada near Radium Hot Springs and as of yesterday CHOKED with all that smoke from the USA. My friend in Salmon Arm, BC can barely see across the street from her door. Vancouver, BC just posted the worst air quality in it's history. There are fires in BC and Wash. State but most of the smoke is from Oregon.
I misspoke again. Washington 410 branches off from US 12 in the mountains and goes over Chinook Pass into Mt. Rainer Park. It is closed in the winter, sometimes for six months. Best time for it is early morning summertime on a cloudless day. Come in from the east.
Looks different than when I crossed it in March....... Love that drive. Spring and Fall for catching critters headed into or coming out of the deep woods. Nice to see ya up here!
It will be interesting to see how you get out of the smoke filed box called the Pacific Northwest. If you find a clear air spot you might want to remain there a couple of days until a good storm moves inland. Right now (Monday morning) it looks as though a pretty good low in building off the coast but it could be Friday before it clears the air west of Cascades up and down the coast.
Beautiful video, as usual! Thanks, Russ! Greetings to everyone from central Florida. Planning to drive a van to AZ in January, if our country is still intact. Have a great week.
I’m going to mention my bicycle ride again. My friend and I were told to bypass Republic because another route was easier. The next town we were to come to would be Wauconda. We were hot, exhausted, thirsty and wondering where in the heck was this town. Well I see it hasn’t changed in 22 years because there it was gas station/café/post office all in one building. We had a good laugh over that because we had so looked forward to the “town.” If you drive over Washington pass you’re going to hear for me again, reliving my once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Oh that takes me back to happy times. I got my drivers license there in Republic. Anderson's looked slow too. Some of the best little shops there. If you would have kept going you would have ended up in Curlew. There is a Job Corps up there to. As for the weather being perfect, lol not. Winter is a beast.
