Hello, Sorry to hear your N55 has a knock. Often this can be a bottom end noise due to worn out rod bearings. In some cases the rod bearings can be replaced and the engine is still ok in some cases if there is damage to the crank the engine may need replacement.

@@AskTheCarExperts One thing though were I almost gave up was fixing a P0172 rich mixture problem. I ended up replacing all injectors, spark plugs, vanos positioning sensors, crankcase positioning sensor, mass airflow sensor, manifold pressure sensors, charge pipe, throttle body, ignition coils, etc. and none of it did anything….. i lived with this issue for almost 3 years and nobody could really help me. Just last month I notices that the boost pipe (which goes out from the intercooler to the charge pipe, and then to the throttle body) Wasn’t attached properly to the IC. Also the inner seal was so loose inside that air escaped out of the pipe: hence rich condition, since measured air escaped out of the pipe and thus less air entered in the intake manifold. Changing the inner rubber seal and attaching the pipe properly solved that issue. It felt like winning an argument agains my girlfriend. It was amazing 🤩

Update on the 101F01 code .Amazon delivered my parts on time Crankcase vent hose and Pvc valve was replaced i didn't replace the intercooler hose cause i was able to seal the base of the intercooler hose that mounts the map sensor. Cleared the code and took it on a test drive. The check engine light would normally come back right away but it never came back on.The on board computer still reads it as a permanent code but that should clear after driving for a bit. I am going through this on my 13 x5. I have a N18 mini cooper, initially had 3 misfires with 2 low compression next to each other. With this in mind plus a 28A0 it’s almost certainly an internal issue with the engine being ticking bomb huh? Practically pointless in trying to diagnose other issues right? The cars runs pretty decently with some rough startups when cold and random jerking when going ~60 miles uphill.
Hello, Anything like this you want to do a cylinder leakage test. It could be a head gasket issue or valves not sealing. Some items are repairable while others would require a head replacement or engine.
My car is having a long crank before starting with the code p112f being the only fault code. I assumed this was the hpfp, but could it be a valve cover leak that causes this code and the long start?
Great video, thank you. I have a 2011 BMW X25 N55 ... and this damned fault code is a real pain in the a...ss. Have been chasing it since 6 months. I have replaced so many parts and I am very frustrated. When I start the car, cold or hot, it will rev up itself to 1500 rpm, then go back to 1000 rpm and then gradually down to 650. The idle needle is stable but I feel rough idle on my seat, intermittent vibration. When chcking N55 start up on youtube, it seems that mine is not so normal (rev to 1500 and go down) CEL is ON. Fault code is 101F01. I have done the idle procedure countless times, but the fault code will come back everytime. I have replaced so many parts...Spark plugs, ignition coils, turbo inlet pipe, turbo outler pipe, intercooler, charge pipe, TMAP sensor, Hotfilm MAF sensor, intake manifold gasket, throttle body, puge valve)... The only light in the dark tunnel I have seen is that one day, after disconnecting purge valve, I cleared the code and I did not reconnect the purge valve electrical connector, I drove the car like that for 3 days. I put my ISTA-D the 3rd day and checked but the 101F01 code did not show up for those 3 days. I had CEL ON but it was because the purge valve was disconnected (tank vent disconnected). So I think my problem may be on the Evap side, because when I isolate it, the code wanish. When I check on ISTA, with tank vent connected, I can see several occurences at different speed, rpm and times of this 101F01 code. I believe it follows normal purge valve operation openings and closing during driving; I don't have smoke machine unfortunately to check tank vent system for leaks. But I suspect that my problem maybe on the tank side. There is no fuel smell in vehicle, I can fill my tank full with problem. Any suggestion welcomed
That would be an interesting failure for this code. You can remove the TVV and see if it is closed correctly by blowing through it. At this point I would replace it and recheck since that seemed to make a difference.

Changing to an OEM HPFP should not cause this code. An air leak or if there is any drag on the engine this code can set. In some cases the HPFP can cause some drag or a problem with the cylinder head. But to do the purge valve adaptation reset. Clear the engine adaptations with a scan tool. Then disconnect the purge valve so it cannot activate at idle which would richen the air mixture. Then idle for 15 minutes. Clear the codes and recheck.

Hello, The exhaust back pressure sensor is a common failure. I have not seen that many turbo's fail. A knock from the turbo seem like an odd symptom. I would get a second opinion on that.
Boost pressure too low can be a consequential fault or a direct fault. It could be the turbo itself or a control feature of the turbo such as the EPDW or vacuum supply if applicable.

Do you have any recommendations on what to try for this? The idle is extremely rough and most of the time cuts out. Did a smoke test and since upgraded the turbo inlet and charge pipes, no more leaks but the car is still having the rough idle
Any suggestions is much appreciated

Great video. I developed this code after my belt came off last night. So I’m guessing the front main seal most likely is damaged.
Hello, Sorry to hear you had this issue. Most likely it is damaged from the belt. Happens quite often.
Is the tank vent valve electrical connector the one with the sliding metal clip? O have a 2013 N55 F10. It is not clear in the cutout picture in the video. Of course my old eyes don't work as well as they used to.
Hi Ron, Glad to help. Yes that push sliding clip is the task vent valve. You can send me a picture of it if you want me to verify for you. Askthecarexperts@gmail.com
I had the same issue. My valve cover had a micro-crack, and since i replaced it, the code newer came back!!!!
Glad you found it! That can be a tough thing to trace. Thanks for posting!

One thing though were I almost gave up was fixing a P0172 rich mixture problem.
Just last month I notices that the boost pipe (which goes out from the intercooler to the charge pipe, and then to the throttle body)
Wasn’t attached properly to the IC.

I am going through this on my 13 x5. The tentioner pulley went and the belt shredded, took out the oil control valve next to the crank pulley, then wrapped around the crank pulley and ate the crank seal. Where I'm at now is i just got the old seal out. (What a pain) but the small tip of a seal puller broke off and went inside and I'm not seeing it. I'm also hoping there's no belt shreds in the motor either. Any advice?

To try and get the broken piece you should remove the oil level sensor and fish around with a magnet. Hopefully you can get it and not have to drop the oil pan.

Your videos have been the most helpful. I just subscribed. I got this fault code 28A0 after I placed the cap on the A/C line (small). Any suggestions?
My car is having a long crank before starting with the code p112f being the only fault code. I assumed this was the hpfp, but could it be a valve cover leak that causes this code and the long start?
This code could be an air leak but normally mixed with a long crank it makes it more likely the high pressure fuel pump.
When chcking N55 start up on youtube, it seems that mine is not so normal (rev to 1500 and go down)
CEL is ON.
When I check on ISTA, with tank vent connected, I can see several occurences at different speed, rpm and times of this 101F01 code. I believe it follows normal purge valve operation openings and closing during driving;
I don't have smoke machine unfortunately to check tank vent system for leaks.

Hello, I just changed my hpfp back to oem. Could that be the reason I have the code? So should I just unplug the purge valve and idle for 15 mins?
Changing to an OEM HPFP should not cause this code. An air leak or if there is any drag on the engine this code can set. In some cases the HPFP can cause some drag or a problem with the cylinder head. But to do the purge valve adaptation reset. Clear the engine adaptations with a scan tool. Then disconnect the purge valve so it cannot activate at idle which would richen the air mixture. Then idle for 15 minutes. Clear the codes and recheck.

118001 - Mixture control, Mixture too lean

Interesting. I have not heard of the valve seats causing this issue.
I am having this same code..
(28A0 ; 101F01) original problem was dead battery. After i replaced battery and did battery registration car drove nice. Then next day my wife bright out youngest to school and when waiting in car rider line idle started surging. And above code set. I just tried the 15 (20) minutes of idling in park with purge valve electrical connector unplugged. Going to reset code and drive it… was wondering.. once i reset the code, isn’t that going to clear adaptions when i clear code?
I hope this issue is fixed for you. Normally you need a scan tool that can reset the adaptations. This is stored in the DME engine control unit. It resets them to zero so it can then relearn the mixture adaptation.
