FIX the 6 Common BMW N55 PROBLEMS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- I'm sure there are other issues that come along with the BMW n55 engine, but I would consider these 6 the biggest problems as they could leave you on the side of the road. If you have something that wasn't mention please share it in the comments and if you think it's a DIy level job or something to take to a shop. If your wondering about an oil catch can. I installed mine about 15,000 mi ago and have caught no oil yet so it looks like blow by isn't too bad on these cars.

You’ve made owning my m235i even more awesome! Thank you for your knowledge!
70k miles on mine and its hands down the most reliable bmw i have owned
70k! You're ahead of me. At that milage, would you say there is something else that needs to be addressed?
I’m at 110k
It all goes wrong at 80k 😂 I'm at 81k.. and every week something goes.
Picking up a 2015 M235i with 72 on it tomorrow, can't wait!
@@S50Sinner nice treat it well man!
i drive a b47 in europe as a 220d and iam in love with this car :) the fact that its a diesel and still gives you smile everytime you drive it is just amazing
Super slick video, my guy. Thank you. Im considering getting my first BMW for my next car and a n55 platform definitely seems more and more like a no brainer.
Bro this is the best description and explanation for this I’ve ever watched😭 please never stop making videos, just subscribed
Thank you. I'll keep doing my best
BY FAR! the most informational video for the m235i out there without a doubt!
Thank you! Just try to keep up with the other great BMW content creators.
The coolant hose return line is a very common failure point as well. Very simple to replace and inexpensive. It's known to fail at 40/50K miles.
Yes!!! I 100% agree, it's so flimsy and it's happened to me. Just waiting for an aftermarket supplier to make a sturdier one. Thanks for sharing
Mine failed at 65k miles and I couldnt find any aftermarket options so went ahead with OEM one again :( I bought 2 spares just in case and put it in the trunk.
@@FritzRamos is that the line that goes to the head by the oil filter housing? They make an aluminum part to replace the plastic fitting
@@stevew145 no, it’s the small hard plastic hose that goes to the coolant expansion tank. They break at the end fittings due to becoming brittle with the engine heat
What about the flange connected to the oil thermostat? Took mine out and ordered the REIN AUTOMATIVE metal piece because the plastic one just fell apart. It might break during operation which luckily was not the case for me.
Please make more BMW content bro!!!! Camera quality, video quality, presentation quality is outstanding. I love ur vids🔥🔥
Thank you so much! Just waiting on parts, they have been back ordered for soooo long 😭
keeping my 05 6MT flattop M3, but likely going to purchase a 6MT M235i as a daily driver and this was informative and helpful, thanks!
I changed the boost / charge pipe and never even thought about the turbo pipe, especially when I staged the car with the amount of pressure. Thanks for the advice.
No problem glad to help. How are you enjoying your car?
I LOVE THIS VIDEO !!! THANK YOU A LOOOOOOOT to watch & explain where are the specific place of this common issues in the N55 !!! Cuz when we talk with a mechanic , ( & like me you don't know anything about that ) They look at you like if you talk a stranger language ! 😅😂 So THANK YOU SO MUCH 4 THIS SPECIFIC POV !!!!IT WILL HELP ME A LOT for my purchase ( 4 serie from 2015 with the six cylinder ) & when i will fix this before issues com to appear 🙏🏾👍🏾🤞🏾 i wish U a GREAT CONTINUATION on Y.Tub 😊
Outstanding video, clear, concise, informative. Thank you.
Your videos are so underrated! I love watching your videos 🙏🏽🔥
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Fantastic video. I’m looking to get a f30 335i , and all these problems worried me as I’ve had a turbo car before. This reassures me in the fact that the n55 is a decently reliable platform after you do some maintenance to it. Thank you for the informative video. I’ll be sure to do all six fixes on my f30.
You're welcome and welcome to the community! The F30 is an excellent platform with lots of recourses. Be sure to check the comments on the video other people had great input there. Looking forward to hearing about how you enjoy your new car 👍
@@FritzRamos Hey Fritz! Ended up getting into an accident and getting a 2013 f30 328i xdrive. It's almost fully loaded with feature and just had to get it. So far the car is fantastic. World of a difference from my 03 325i. Any words of wisdom when it comes to the n20 motor? Thanks for your time.
N55 is the most reliable engine BMW has made in the last 40 years! ... absolute KEY to trouble free operation is to perform oil changes every 5K miles!
I'm looking for N55 in F30 body, but I live in Thailand and there is no F30 N55 , I need to find a N55 engine to swap into F30 body by import an engine from abroad. So, this video made me clearly understand the commons issues of this one . Thanks man !!!
Thanks Fritz! I'm approaching 104k miles and have replaced the charge pipe twice (once under warranty, then I replaced with the vrsf myself when the second started to leak, no issues since), oil filter housing gasket (used a mechanic, but EatSleepDrive has a good tutorial), coolant hose off the expansion tank (left me stranded, but very easy fix with part and coolant). Previous N55s have had electric water pump and thermostat issues, but possibly fixed now considering the lack of comments on the 2addicts forums. No issues with the boost pipe or intercooler. Very reliable car, especially after all known issues are addressed and even more so if the car is kept stock. I've driven across the country 3 times with no issues and the last 30k miles have been problem free with routine DIY maintenance.
THanks for that input! Cross country 3 times and no issues that's amazing! It really shine a light into how reliable these cars can be with just some basic maintenance.
Got a page not found on the boost pipe. Otherwise again an excellent and well presented video. Love your work.
Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they're sold out. I emailed VRSF to ask when they'll have more. Thanks Thomas, always good to hear from you.
Thank you very much very helpful info and details, I'm picking up an X1 with this engine gaskets top and bottom have already been done just need to worry about the two other things or three other things thank you again
If some of you are interested in a 228i rather than a 235i, BMW resolved the timing chain issue for the N20/N26 engines produced 2016 model year and after. If you're still uneasy about it, ensure you perform 5000 to 7500 mile oil changes. My F22 M Sport is a 16 with 69k+ miles with no issues so far (knock on wood).
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing. The MPGs on those are insane for a BMW!
@@FritzRamos wait a bmw that gets insane mpg? no way
N20 can still be plenty strong once tuned, especially on E30 mix. I’ve heard it’s models built around the end of 2013 so 2014 model years that had the revised timing chain, I hope so at least cause my 2014 428i with its build date it has…is not included on the timing chain lawsuit
Thanks for the info. It’s greatly appreciated
Anytime 👍Glad it was helpful!
Plan on buying one of these soon thanks for the video
Glad I could help. Hope you find one in the spec you want.
love your work !
Great video!
Great vid thanks for sharing
Righteous info. Oil filter gaskets #1 tho.
Thanks man ! I have done all this mods
Fritz is on point with the N55 engine, I have had 3 of the issues discussed happen or happening on the 2014 BMW X3
Thank you, but check out the comments. Some people made really good suggestions there too.
This gives me confidence ! DIY
Do not forget the oil filter housing gasket. It can leak oil onto the belt and if it’s bad enough the belt can slip off, get sucked into the front crank and block the oil pump ruining the engine.
Thanks. That was overwhelmingly the job people recommended so we did it. ua-cam.com/video/RayEPzJW0ZE/v-deo.html
Damn good video, my guy. I took the same route with my F30 335
With 75k miles, I only needed to replace the oil filter housing gaskets, I optionally replaced the Water pump, Thermostat, Spark plugs, Serpentine belt with Tensioner pulley along with the Transmission fluid all at 75k miles.
not sure if I missed it, but you forgot to mention the oil filter housing gasket.. which can lead to catastrophic issues when it leaks on top of the serpentine belt
Thanks for the information
good well spoken guide. i have 75k miles of trouble free miles on my 16 m235i.
Thank you! Wishing you many more miles without troubles.
I live in Japan.
I owned m235i, but I had an engine blow at suzuka circuit. The cause was crank lock. I had a crank shield guard of KIES, but there was no effect. For engine failure countermeasures, it may be better to add a reinforced valve and an oil cooler. I'm sorry I'm not good at English.
Don't be hard on yourself, your English is good! Wow, you must have been pushing the upper limits of the car. Every shop I talked to said that almost never happens.
I might take you up on your offer on upgrading the oil cooler. Thank you for sharing.
@@FritzRamos Thanks to you, I enjoyed remodeling the m235i.
@@RaiRai99999 It's a great car to work on. Please continue to share your progress
Oil starvation ?
My BMW specialist here advise me to install aftermarket walls into my oilpan if I wanted to go on track oneday (E92 335i N55 here).
Could it be what caused your engine to sized ?
Great video. Now, what’s the average life span of the parts that you mentioned? Like how often are they replaced? Specially the gaskets.
Bad ass video thank you!!
Thanks for video
Some damn good info!👍🏼
Thank you.
Hi thank you for very informative video. do you know the torque specs for all piping clamps fresh air intake boot and boost pipes?
I love my 2014 X1 x35i M Sport (e84/n55) with 57k miles, but all the cheap plastic crap is maddening. I’ve had to change the oil pan gasket, front wheel bushings, condenser, water pump, thermostat (2x), coolant overflow tank, etc. And I drive it easy.
Item 7. Steering column u joints corrosion
Item 8. Pulley tensioner and belt
Item 9. Oil pump gasket
I guess 7 isn't part of the n55 actually.
such a great informative host. I've been scared to own a bmw so I stick to lexus but listening to this video gives me hope 😂
Thanks! That is one of the goals of the channel so thanks for letting me know I'm on the right track. If you do the facebook groups are very helpful and from my experience people there are very nice and helpful. Keep in touch
Seat heater is also common German car icon for problem from battery drainage to other kind of oxygen sensor and cabin air content and MAF sensor
Very informative
Thank you!
I would probably add the Coolant Return line to that as well. that thing broke off for me after only 35k Miles.
Did the Oil Filter housing basket and Oil Coolant gasket and Turbo oil inlet pipe at 82k. Now tuned on MHD stage 1 with no issues (knock on wood)
Thanks for sharing! Those are definitely things to keep an eye on.
Exist this problem on 430d f36?? Regards!!!! and.. congratulations for your video!!
Picking up one hopefully this week with 95k miles is they’re a way I can look into the car’s maintenance history?
Just got a 2015 335i. Vrsf intercooler, charge pipe, catless downpipe. Only issues are maf sensor code p00bd and low voltage (getting new battery + programming from bmw). Cleaned the sensor with maf cleaner and cleared the code, we will see if it comes back
Fantastic Edification!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
I bought my 2015 M235i with 50k miles on it from my dealership (I’m in sales) I had one of my techs I trust check it out before I went through with it, in his words he said “this is one of the cleanest bmw’s I’ve ever seen, no leaks anywhere.” Literally in the first 2 months I owned it, the charge pipe exploded off AND the valve cover and oil pan gaskets failed.. 🤣🤣☠️☠️… I just hit 113k, just replaced the spark plugs and coils, the valve cover a second time and this time around I changed the oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket…. As well as a new radiator and upper radiator hose. Other than those issues (most of which happened almost all at once at 100k miles)… This engine has been shockingly reliable considering it’s a BMW.
Hey fritz! I was wondering if you could make a video about adjusting the 235 high beams :)
In these cars, you can only adjust the low beams and then the high beams will be adjusted automatically. Sure I could so a video on that.
Got a lci f10 535i very useful!
thank you
Thank you so much! 😭
You're welcome! Hope you are doing well, good to hear from you 🤜🤛
Biggest problem faced on my 2017 X5 xDrive35i N55 was the thermostat and water pump. The water pump plagued me for almost 2 years. The water pump and thermostat problems have all been fixed at a huge cost. For the gaskets they get a regular check and with 80k miles.
what was the issue with the water pump?
I'm getting codes, but I feel it's a short to fuses under the hood or the distribution block on the battery is bad
@@wavybump There's a grounding bolt that can cause problems on N55 water pumps. Could be the problem??? More info: ua-cam.com/video/82ukwTlD-oA/v-deo.html
@@stradaredlands appreciate you. my water pump was bad, but I tried..
I’d add the serpentine belt tensioner, belt and idler … definitely a DIY can be done in like 45min going slowly
You should do a video on the valvetronic system. The shaft and motor tend to fail around 80k+ miles. I'm going through it right now. It can be a scare for people, but a proper guide video from you would definitely ease the whole process. I'm a big fan of your videos, I have a 2014 335 xdrive 6spd.
I have a permanent valvetronic error, mine has a K&N intake and it's chipped. My chare pipe just popped the sensor under NDC. I'm replacing that and just had valve cover replaced. Injectors were also replaced on both banks which dirtied up my Catalytic. One step at a time, but yeah the valvetronic error is probably next on the chopping block.
I have a 2015 740Li with an N55. I'm at 150k and got a catalytic converter code. What are your thoughts on sourcing a cat as well as O2 sensors and all the parts you listed in this video?
Hi fritz, thanks for the great vid. I switched 3 years ago from a N54 to the N55 (M135i-2014) and i didnt regregt this choice. The N54 was an awesome engine (430hp) but i got so many issues over the years (cant even count-_-)....yeah it was tuned, but even with stock power i had just trouble. My mechanic loves me because every quarter year i had huge and expensive problemes(high pressure pump, injection,valves,turbos....and more and more.....
With the N55 its kind of a new Level, a new level of driving "without trouble" ...ok, i just got 62000km(38.000 miles), i have a chargepipe-boostkit upgrade and a M-Performance exhaust (~350hp)
ok, to be fair the N55 has some tiny little issues, the wastegate rattles a little bit, and the vaccum pump makes wired noises in cold start...but it works, i checked that from my BMW dealer and he just said "state of the art" ...
I am really split in half. This Engine is lots of fun and costs me as a M235i just as much as a 230i M Package. I know that the B48 is way more reliable with its 252hp but is it worth it when I can get for the same condition an N55 M235i?
N55 from 2009 to 2014 can have a spun bearing after 75k miles i did mine as a preventive maintenance item when the oil pan gasket was leaking...
Weird, these aren't the same as the six common issues on other channels! Some of those channels say things like oil leak from the oil filter housing, oil leak from the oil cooler, the oil leak on the valve cover gasket, then injectors, the serpentine belt getting sucked into the engine, the crankshaft bolt coming loose, you know, all the other common issues! There's more too, I just wanted to mention the first six that came to mind!
Oh, I missed that your #1 was valve cover!
My 2014 m235i F22 just went into limp mode / Drivetrain malfunction on the highway. Based on Bimmerlink I’m assuming it’s a charge pipe or vacuum hose… I haven’t found it yet 😔.
I’m at 80k miles. Last year I had the valve cover gasket replaced and front struts replaced (both failed around 75k). The oil filter gasket is looking like it’ll need a change some day soon, too. I also had a radiator coolant hose fail at 65k (replaced that myself). The use of cheap plastic hoses, parts and inferior gaskets is extremely irritating and pretty unforgivable.
I got same 2015 blue m235i, cept it's convertible and I got 51k miles. No issues so far.
Right on. Hope it continues to serve you well
Could you make the same on the B58 platform
Did you go for the 5.5” or 6.5” intercooler?
Hi there Got 435i xdrive 65k mile on it , i have question about transmission oil . what is your recommendation about it ? car is running great and also transmission is good . i need to know what i have to look before something go wrong .
thanks
Why you didn't mentioned the electric water pump ?
It's a common and known issue on N55. (At higher mileage, I agree)
6:23 - I don't think it's the turbo inlet pipe there but a water pump hose. ;)
About the valve cover gasket, it's not that difficult to DIY. It doesn't require exotic tools and there's plenty of tutorial in here.
The n55's have the newer and more reliable high pressure fuel pump!👌
@Fritz The Boostpipe like shows 404 error, can you put a new updated link for it. Thanks.
Thank you. I emailed them It looks like it's out of stock at the moment
picking up a 2015 with 56k on it. excited af
You're going to love it
I would add replacing the water pump and thermostat since it is in the same general location.
2 great suggestions. Thanks
Would you say 87k miles is to hight to buy one at i want to keep it till atleast 150,xxx and its in great condition thoughts?
Not engine related but I had to change both rear wheel speed sensors on mine. I'm not sure if its a known issue or if I was unlucky.
Thanks for sharing. Was it the sensor specifically? Or was there another underlying or conditional issue involved?
Hey men i have a question my car is running rough at idle but when i unplug the maf airflow sensor the rough idle goes away do u know what could be the problem i have a bmw x5 e70 n55 engine i try to clean the maf air flow sensor but it didn’t work ?
Do these parts apply to a x5 2013 35i? I clicked on the charge pipe upgrade but no x5 listed
125k fbo with pr coils. No issues. No bearing problems here either. That has been taken care of.
2016 m235i xdrive with 50000 miles muffler delete, vrsf charge pipe, vrsf 5in hd intercooler, bms intake and a jb4. No issues other than my bass sometimes is non existent.
Been driving bmws for over 20 years now .. best engine they ever made is the N52 and the N55 comes after
That's not a bad place to land.
Is it normal to hear what sounds like the turbo spooling up in these cars Under moderate to heavy acceleration?
Saying it’s turbo charged, probably
was so confused why my car threw a check engine light after installing a cold air intake u til i realized that my turbo inlet pipe wasn’t stable at all, i guess it was already on it way out but when i was moving it a bit , it completely broke. took about a month to diagnose the problem but now i got a vrsf turbo inlet coming soon !
I'm sure that was annoying. Glad you got it sorted out
My wife and I will likely be moving soon, and I’ll need to pick up an “inexpensive” used car to use for some time. I found an ‘11 335i xDrive with 117k, spent most of its life in Quebec. Any thoughts or best practices for obtaining detailed service records from native French speaking shops?
If the previous owner remembers where they took the car the shop should have records. Sometimes carfax has records as well.
@@FritzRamos yeah, CarFax has the shop listed, but not the service performed. I reached out by email. But in my experience doing business in the past, some folks in Quebec don’t love when people speak English to them.
Thanks for the advice tho.
I've worked my ass off and I've bought my a 2016 m135i loads of goodies bought and plenty to go. I'm always so stressed out about my engine blowing(70kmiles) but the more I hear about it being solid engine makes me bit more relaxed. How's the auto box on these too? Especially when tuning I'm currently going for stage 2+ but I'm worried of blowing my gearbox now as I've seen its only built to handle 450nm... anyone have any experience with them?
My m235i has a rough idle n even turns off sometimes , I changed the sparkplugs n coils n downstream O2 sensor n it still does the same can you please help figure out the problem
I have a N55/F30 engine light on after diagnostic show the code: P144B.
Can you tell me what do I look for and fix the issue?
I wanna get a F30 335i for my first car do you think it’s worth it?
Nearly 60k on my 2015 N55. No issues.
could the oil pan gasket leaking result in smoke coming from the back of the engine bay?
If could, but you'll want to get underneath to find the source
Getting my f22 tomorrow. Getting rid of my n20 f30 before I need a timing chain
You won't regret it!
Nice video! 6:00 you need to check your coolant level... :-)
Thanks for the heads up! Coolant level is good. Is it just me or is that sensor is super sensitive? lol
@@FritzRamos Super sensitive or very attentative... :-)
Oil filter housing gasket is another common problem. After going catless, I'm noticing white smoke buildup (during idle, not when driving) in my exhaust. I fear my turbo seals have gone out. Or maybe PCV.
I replaced my PVC with a heater hose, I hate their plastic hoses lol. Hopefully it's not your turbo seals. Have you checked your downpipe clams?
@@FritzRamos haven't checked those. I am going to a shop for them to look at, hopefully they find something minor.
@@seollenda hopefully it's just an exhaust gasket or something small. Keep me posted
@@FritzRamos Yep, the smoke didn't smell sweet so its not coolant. It was pretty stinky, but I can't tell if its oil or just gasoline smell
@@seollenda white smoke should be exhaust. Did it only occur after the downpipe? How long have you had it in?

What year is this issue I havr my sights on a 2021
U forgot a few other problem valve cover pcv valve leaks air haven’t to replace the whole cover since it is built in plus vacuum lines crack and fail causing hard brake pedal in morning or when left for a few days too hard to engage the brake switch which lets u start the car cause vacuum has been lost and car won’t start unless u are able to press it down with all your might and maybe get it i wasn’t able to plus there’s a very stupid fault is your door handles start getting wet they blow a fuse to your dcm which whole car goes into limp mode car barly eunnor even stays start brakes don’t work it’s very unsafe but it all happen from a faulty leaking door handle just unhook the comfort access to that door so won’t open when u walk up to that door unless u hit unlock so u gotta replace the handle
65k on mine and going strong so far! How was the quality of your vrsf boost pipe? Mine did not have a smooth path on the inside. Looked like there were weld marks inside of the pipe.
