You say "Defense: distance." It reminds me, my boxing coach's 1st lesson was that distance is your defense. You can block, dodge/slip, parry, but after that you can be hit, but with distance you are always safe. Distance and timing became my best weapons. This was 25 years ago, years later on UA-cam I saw a boxing analysen video where the creator said "distance and timing, or actually position and rhythm are key to win in any combat sports". I now realize how good my coach was. Nice video! Appreciate it 👍
At 3:38 you demonstrated and explained a technique which up until now, I mistakenly assumed was merely an exercise which my aikido instructor has our class occasionally practice. I was pleasantly surprised that instead of this technique being only an exercise, you demonstrated that it IS a practical, deliberate self-defense technique. There you are, showing it during an exchange, and the technique works as planned. Likewise, you caught my attention in your section regarding grappling. In aikido, very similar principles are taught and practiced. I didn't realize that any styles of European swordfighting had developed them too. (This feels like discovering the same language carved onto cave walls on different continents. LOL) Thank you very much for posting this video.
I get better in fencing with every of your great videos. I wish there was a good hema club in my region, but you guys make totally up for it, thank you!
Great video and instructions. I am just about wrapping up a video with a series of direct attacks from a tournament. Will make sure to send anyone asking questions on how and why to do direct attacks and how to counter them to your video.
Awesome video but do you guys think you could make a video about the saber i think it's an elegant weapon and I've always wanted to study it if I ever get into HEMA

TBH I am not sure from where that controversy came from. Parry-riposte was definitely done but in the Lichtenauer tradition it was not prefered option and variant 1 and 2 and 3 was taught instead.
I'm pretty sure what the text says is to not only defend, i.e you should take the initiative and respond with a strike of your own rather than try to catch everything the opponent might want to throw at you. The whole "controversy" is absolute bullshit, just like most of the HEMA discourse floating around on the internet.
I heard too much... that parries are too dangerous, that parries belong to sport fencing. Of course parry with sport saber and longsword will be different but... they are still a parries

What do you think about any kind of lateral footwork (diagonal included) as a counter?

Hey, I can't seem to find your video on what to do about people who defend with distance. Am I missing the location of it?
you need to bring these teachings europe-wide, it could become a new hobby. re-connect us to our past.
