- Welcome back to another sew along! This one is a bit of a “bonus” sew along. I hadn’t planned on doing this one, but had some requests for how to do the placket on the M7357 top I was going to make for my current mini capsule. I just decided to go ahead and film as I sewed! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

This video was a Godsend. The pattern instructions for the placket were nonsensical to me. Thank goodness for you. You saved my project!
Oh good!!!
That burrito method blew my mind, LOL. I would never have figured out how to do this is you hadn't shown it. Love your sew along videos! Hugs
Oh good! Love when I can share a new technique!
So glad Joy told us about you its like finding a diamond a very big diamond.
What a very kind thing to say!
I love this blouse! I know, late to the party, however, I have this pattern. I originally had it in my Destashify pile. Not anymore. Rummaged in my huge stash, found perfect material for it and I’m getting ready to sew it up next week. Thanks.
Oh good!
That blouse came out beautiful ! Thank you for the tutorial.
Thank you!
Your blouse is gorgeous and it looks perfect on you. The neckline makes it! You’re a fantastic blogger with so much to share. What a blessing you are
Thank you, Carolyn! That’s a very kind thing to say!
I love your instruction using the burrito method. First time learning about this. I will definitely try this! You are fun to watch and I always learn something new. Thank you 😊
Oh good! I really love that finish so I'm glad it made sense!
Thank you for clearly explaining all your clever techniques. You always make me smile right back at you too, and I bet I'm not the only one.
What a lovely comment! Thank you. That makes my day!
Whitney that is a wonderful sew along, thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge and time. You have given me the confidence to tackle this, the pattern is on order, now fingers crossed I make a good job of it. Your shirt looks lovely on, such a nice shape and fabric choice, and a style which can be casual or dressed up. Again, so many thanks! X
My absolute pleasure!
Thanks Whitney for a great video. A beautiful woven fabric garment makes a stylish change from the T-shirt look. Your finished shirt is lovely!
I agree! Just as easy to wear, but more polished!
I want to thank you so much for doing this video. I made this top and never finished it because I could not figure out the neck piece. Thank you!
I’m so glad this was helpful!
Thank you Whitney for a fabulous sew a long, I will definitely get that blouse pattern. Love the little people in the famous chair peeking a look at Mum at work. Lol
It would make this blouse a little different if the tab was made with a beaded tab there lots of options. Lot of love Chris xx
Haha! I was filming on a Saturday so you guys got a look at how "busy" my sewing room becomes when little people are home! If you could only hear the chatter I had to edit out! I love the idea of embellishing the tab area. That does give a lot of possibilities!
thank you for the tutorial and i have to say I love the fabric you are using.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your easy explanation of how to do the facing and the tab!! I am on my second attempt at this top. Couldn't figure it out before and came across this video by chance. Thanks!
I’m so glad it helped!
WOW! So cute-Thank you for sharing....lots of great techniques in this video.
Whitney, what a fantastic blouse. You have given me the confidence to try it. You are a breathe of fresh air. Hugs from the UK
That’s a lovely thing to say! Thank you!
Oh Whitney I just love that blouse, it looks fabulous on you! I'm going to get the fabric ordered today along with the pattern. Love it!! Great tutorial, thank you for your time. Love the peek of your daughter! 😊 Dee
😂 thank you, Dee! I filmed this on a Saturday and had kids in and out of the room the ENTIRE time!
Lovely top. Thanks for the sew along.
I'm glad it was helpful!
Hi Whitney, thank you so much for sharing this with us all. You are truly amazing and so generous with your time. I really look forward to all your videos.
Love your sewing machine too. I looks so hands free with lifting the presser foot, reversing and cutting the thread. I need one.
I must say, if you can get a knee lift for you machine or get a machine that allows you to lower and raise your presser foot without using your hands, its a time saving game changer!
Whitney, your " equipment" makes your garment so professional looking. You've made me want to set my sewing room up with better stuff...thank you.
I needed you 2 weeks ago when I was struggling with the back yoke facings on my jacket. Had to walk away several times, even threatened to throw it in the trash. Finally made it through. I've saved this video to my favorites for future reference. Thanks for sharing.
Oh no! We’ve all been there. I currently have a skirt in a crumpled mess sitting in time out!
OMGosh, that was my plan! Thank you so so much Whitney, you are incredible!!
Be Blessed
Dee
❤️
I love the blouse and thank you so much for the sew along. I can't wait to make mine now
Too cute for words, reminds me of my own sweet daughter when she was young.
As always, so informative. Your tutorials are like a masters class in sewing. Thank you!
😂 thank you, Joyce! I’m so glad you like them!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. You are a beautiful person.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
We need a LOVE button lol. Great sew a long, learned about under sewing. thx :) . Feel better Whitney
Thank you so much for this sew along. The blouse looks lovely. I wouldn't have chosen this from the artwork on the pattern but yours is so beautiful I'm going to give it a go.
Fantastic, Susan! I’m glad you’re going to give it a go!
Very nice! Love the blouse & fabric choice. Also great construction tips, I just ordered this pattern. Thank you! 🧵
I’m so glad!
Again…I have a McCall’s dress pattern that has a facing like this and when I followed the instructions, which were to sew the uninterfaced facing on first, sew the interfaced facing onto that, and turn the interfaced facing inward, it looked so bad that I ended up tossing the project. This is along the lines of what I was planning to do the next time around. This makes so much sense. Somehow you just know what I’m having trouble with and already have a solution ready
Oh good! This makes me so happy!
I just bought this pattern and I’m so happy to get your instructions! So very helpful!
Love your sew alongs!! Thanks so much and keep them coming.😁
Thank you!.....I love this blouse!....but really like your fabric. 😀
I love this blouse.
Thank you! I love it too!
Blouse is lovely ! Think i might have to add it to my spring six ! ( Which i might add I am totally blaming you for) ,
Although that would then be seven so maybe i'll just make five more lol Love your vlogs you keep us motivated . Thank you
😂 it is a great pattern and I take no responsibility for any enabling I might do here on the channel!
I have not tried a custom cup size pattern before. As soon as I can I am going to purchase a custom cup pattern. I will let you know now I get on with the pattern. Thank you again.
They are great. You will love them!
Yay!!! Joann’s has McCalls pattern on sale for 1.99 at the end of this week so I’ll pick this one up. Looking soooo forward to making it. Thanks Whitney. I appreciate you!😘❤️
That is so lovely! I appreciate each and every one of you as well!
Hey Whitney - sorry about your stomach. I know that must be very painful. I love your videos and especially when I see Gidget. She’s a doll. I do like how you show sewing tutorials. Thanks for all you do
My pleasure! If only Gidget could understand how popular she is!
Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial. My daughter has an issue with severe bloating. Her's is caused by GERD or acid reflux. She has to have surgery to stop it as it is quite painful also. Hope yours isn't that bad. Hope you feel better soon. Thanks again.
Oh my! I’m so sorry for your daughter! Mine isn’t acid reflux so I don’t have that pain associated with it. I hope she has some success with the surgery!
Thank you I am sure the surgery will help her. Thanks again. Glad you don't have pain.
I love reading your comments. So much love for you ( deservedly.) Your blouse looks great, the fabric really suits you and I have the pattern which came free with a magazine. I thought it was a bit “meh” until I saw your version. I’ve dug it out from my “will never sew patterns.”
😂 I love this! Isn’t it funny how much fabric can make or break a pattern? I’m so glad you’re going to give it a try!
I just realized you have a sew along for this pattern. Yours is beautiful. Now I need to pick my fabric and notions . What is your fabric ?
Thank you!
Oh wow! I love this blouse. Thank you for the great tutorial xxx
Love this too! It looks fabulous on you! Bought the pattern. What is your fabric? Looks like maybe a challis?
Thank you so much! Yes. The fabric I used is a rayon challis!
I am so glad you did this sewalong, you have done a lovely job on the blouse, miles better than my attempt! I loved the way my version hung at the back but I have to say the front was too much of a faff for me (that might be British term!). Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I really enjoy watching you!
Thank you! And I love the British terms!
Fabulous shirt! I will make one since now I know how to close the deep neckline!
Great video. If you don't want to hand sew the cuff, sew it first to the inside, then flip to the outside and top stitch down.
Yep! That’s how I do all my button down shirt cuffs and waistbands, typically. I was just really having a moment with hand sewing at the time 😉.
Hi, great make. Just a hint for the tab is to reverse the process and see the facing on tab on the wrong side. You just get a clean seam line on the out side. It's a very fiddly way to see that, the pattern makers really have to make it hard sometimes
That’s a great idea!
Love that blouse! Really cute on u! I dont wear blouses much but this may be a good one.
The blouse is lovely!!!
So cute!
The new blouse is gorgeous‼️👌💃🏻
Really like this blouse, your fabric is very nice. I agree about the little tab at the bottom of the front band...not sure I like it, but not sure of an alternative. Have you thought of something yet? Will you make it again?
Chris Paddock commented that you could use something different for that area to embellish it and make it a feature, which I think would be lovely. One of the views of the pattern has you using ribbon to highlight some of the seams, so you could use that to make it a feature as well. I think I will probably make this again in a solid. I really like the fit!
Great sew along, Whitney. Love the blouse! Because Joann's has McCall's on sale..😂 Thanks for the refresher for the burrito method. You did choose your pattern size by your high bust measurement, right?
Yes I did. My high bust is 36 and the bust measurement for a 14 is 36 so that’s what I chose and used the c cup pieces!
Thank you Whitney love the video so very helpful
Good! This one was for you 😉.
And I am working on it right now
Hey Whitney - arent you on fire!!! Love this top on you, I think the fabric is amazing for this top! Sorry to hear about your tummy problems - if you suffer with gastro issues, it may well be worth you trying the supplement D-Limonene. For 6 months now I've had AWFUL acid reflux including massive amounts of pain on my left side and have been taking acid reducers, which left me anaemic. A bit of a nightmare really! Anyway, I started D-Limonene 9 days ago, and within 5 days I was able to come off the medication and now feel little to no pain. I've been doing research on it (and I;d recommend doing that if interested) and it seems to help people with all different kinds of gastric issues. I dont know why its not more widely known really! Anyway, take or leave my advice but thought it might be of some help x
Thank you, Claire! This is very helpful. I am have definitely been doing research on my own since not all my doctors can agree on some things. I will definitely look into this!
@@TomKatStitchery That sounds familiar! If you have any questions, dont hesitate to PM me. x
@@TomKatStitchery Also, check Mel from Ditsy Tulips latest video, it may be something you are interested in!
Penguin and Pear Dressmaking will do!
Great video thanks. Serious machine envy going on here :)
Thank you! It’s a great machine!
I’ve been enjoying your videos since I began sewing almost a year ago and was psyched when a sewing.patternreview.com/ reviewer mentioned you had done this pattern! Then browsing your archive there is so much more- and I made sure to watch your debut video. Thanks!
I’m so glad you found me!
Great video. This pattern caught my eye for the body shape. But, i HATE that one must wear a camisole due to the plunging neckline. My thought is to use the pattern primarily for for the body shape. I'm thinking of eliminating the band/placket completely.
Here is my idea: eliminate the placket, add the placket width to the pattern pieces, make the neckline a modest V-neck or U-shape neckline (finish the neck to your taste with binding). For the fabric, I would use a lightweight drape-y knit.
Ooh! That sounds like a fun pattern hack! It sounds like it should work!
Not a big fan of McCall's patterns but this top is beautiful. Ya did a good job!!
Thank you!
Thank you! Love it. What do you think about adding grommets and a ribbon or tie of the same material in place of the hook and eye?
You could totally do that!
I've recently realised that I really do need to do more FBAs because the difference between my high bust and full bust is about 6 inches! I was getting away with not doing it on quite a few garments but now, doing pattern testing, I found I really needed to do it properly.
It makes such a difference when you do it. I think you’ll be very pleased with the results!
I love your videos. Will you please tell me what your favorite book is for learning how to alter patterns?
In my trouser sew along, I'm talking about some of my favorite books for pattern alterations. It should be going up sometime next week so stay tuned!
Good job !
Thanks!
Just found you. I'm in heaven. Love your tutorials you use your serger a lot I'm wondering what kind it is or do they all do the cover stitch
So glad you found me! My serger is a Babylock Evolution and it’s a serger and coverstitch in one. Not all sergers can coverstitch.
Hi Whitney!! Im making this blouse and wondering if you had a struggle applying the neckband. I’ve picked it out twice! Got any advice? Thanks!
Oh no! What, in particular are you having issues with? Is it the curve? Maybe basting it in first if you’re having a hard time?
Hope you feel better dear❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
Thanks for the sew along. Next time can you please consider showing what you are doing on a flat surface? It was hard to see when you were holding it up in the air. Blouse turned out lovely though.
I can definitely try!
I like watching your UA-cam videos. One thing that would help me would be if you explained why you are doing a technique.
You are so right. This was one of my first sew alongs so I have, hopefully, improved. This is a great reminder as I do tend to plunge ahead 😂.
very flattering on you!
do you do gathering pitches at all or do the feed dogs do all the work when setting in sleeves? Thank you for this sew a long. I hope you are feeling better.
I don’t do any ease stitches in the sleeve cap. The feed dogs do all the work!
I have seen a vlog from another sewist who had bloating issues from IBS and her waistline changed dramatically She made adjustable waistbands. I don’t know if that will work but thought I’d throw it out there.
That’s a great idea. I will put elastic into the back of waistbands quite often just to keep waistlines from stretching out. I think I’ve pin pointed the issue, so hopefully it goes back to “normal” here in a few days!
Really nice
Did you move the dart down 1 inch? I love your videos and will be making this top.
I didn’t touch the dart on this one since I was using D cup pattern pieces, but it could use a bit of a drop for my next iteration. I might lower it by 1/2” for next time.
@@TomKatStitchery Thank you!
I’d love you to discuss pants fitting. By this I mean in terms of style of pants. For example, the ginger jeans would have zero ease around the crotch length and fit close to your body. What about the Jenny trousers by closet case? You have just made the shorts did you alter to fit more closely? I’m just fitting my pair and I’m struggling with the front rise/ length and where it should hit. Dungarees need more length but pants don’t. Do you have any rules? I have the pants for real people book and they give some guidelines but I’d be interested in your views on fitting the various styles.. Hope this made sense!
I can definitely talk a bit about that in the trouser sew along. Send me an email: tomkatstitchery@gmail.com and I can give you my thoughts on the Jenny!
Did you prewash your material? I've bought the same and am now getting ready to sew with your tutorial. Can you also tell me your needle size? Thank you so much!
Dee
Yes I do! With my rayon, I wash and dry it in the machines and then going forward will wash the garment in the machine on a delicate cycle and then hang to dry. I usually use a size 10 universal needle for my lighter weight rayon’s. A Microtex needle (also size 10 or 11) is also fantastic for rayon!
@@TomKatStitchery I'm excited to begin this blouse M7357 and hope,it turns out as well as yours. Would a microtex needle in a 10 work? I've only sewn with Rayon once before and I remember the yoke shifted a bit on me, so a little nervous but I'll crack on!
Dee
Dolores Murphy yes, a Microtex 10 needle would be great! If your nervous about the shifty rayon, you can always carefully iron the washed yardage with spray starch. It will keep everything much more stable while you sew and then it will just wash out when you’re finished!
Whitney, when you trimmed your seams to 1/4”, do you grade them and does it matter if you understitch before or after the trimming?
I usually only grade when I’m using heavier fabrics. It doesn’t really matter when you trim, but I think it’s easier (and less likely to cut into something you don’t want to cut) if you trim and then understitch.
Check out New Look N6604. Just found it at Joanns. Several options!!
Whitney, can you do a tutorial on how to adapt a pattern from a dropped sleeve to a fitted shoulder seamed sleeve? I have super thick biceps and that seam across with a drop sleeve adds too much attention in my opinion and many of the patterns I love have the dropped sleeve. As for the top you made in the video, could you finish the bottom of the neckline by sewing the each side of the neck edge to the bottom tab front sides together then just top stitch after you've serged the edge to finish them? I think it would finish nicer than the added tab, but that's just my opinion.
Hey, Cecile! As far as the front of the shirt, if what I’m imagining is what you’re saying, then I think, yes, you could do that and it would be a nicer finish. I really love this finished top, but was not crazy how they had you finish that front edge. As far as the dropped shoulder, i completely get where you’re coming from on that. I have large biceps and have similar issues. Unfortunately, going from a drip shoulder to a set in sleeve would require drafting a whole new sleeve (for the sleeve cap) and is a bit intense for my little tutorials. You may want to check out Suzy Furrer on Bluprint, though. She has great pattern drafting classes where you might be able to reverse engineer something!
@@TomKatStitchery Thanks so much for the quick reply! I will be sure to look her up on Blueprint!
Cecile Hoare beware. You might get sucked into a rabbit hole! She’s amazing 😂!
When is it best to do a set in sleeve vrs a flat sewn in sleeve, which I prefer.
Thank you! Dee
I will honestly do a flat sleeve anytime that it’s possible (which is most times) on tops. I do sew jacket and coat sleeves in, in the round.
Do you think there is any reason NOT to sew the placket ends to the tab towards the inside? It seems like you could do that instead of having all the raw edges to the outside. Then maybe serger across those raw edges on the inside and the outside would be clean.
You could definitely do that. In fact, if I make this again, I’ll do it on the inside.
I figured out the fabric type in the drop down .
Oh good!
Hey Whitney! Would tencil be too heavy for this style?
No. A lighter weight tencel would work great. I would steer clear of any tencel twills, but a shirting tencel would be lovely!
Would you happen to know of a full vs fitted top with pintucks? Thanks!
Not off the top of my head, but delicate details like that are VERY "in" for Spring. If you do find something, let me know because I would be very interested!
Hi again. Should we wear a bra when measuring difference between upper and lower bust?
Yes. That’s a great question. Where the one you would most likely wear when wearing the top!
What size pattern do you cut out? I heard you say that some times you don’t do a full bust adjustment. Please I need your help.
I cut out the size 14 with the C cup pieces (this pattern is a custom cup size pattern). My upper bust is 36" so that's why I picked the 14. My full bust is 39" at the moment so the 3" difference put me into the C cup pieces. Because this is a custom cup size pattern and contains the different pieces for the different cup sizes, I don't have to do an FBA. For any other pattern, I really need to do an FBA (usually a 1" FBA so 1/2" on either side). That's one of the reasons I LOVE the custom cup size patterns, it's one less pattern adjustment I have to do!
Thank you for replying to my question. You are the first person to answer my question. Thank you again.
Wanda Hopson it’s my pleasure!
Thank you Whitney for this SewAlong. I bought the pattern and then found this video and your channel. I'm now a subscriber and I bought the Butterick shirtdress pattern and plan to follow along. Thanks. This McCall's blouse was fun to make, however my efforts took much longer. I've returned to sewing after a very long hiatus (over a decade) and it's like starting over. Thanks for the burrito method technique. I used it and it's so clever. Here's my review and thanks again for posting your tutorials -- so helpful and fun! sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/168245
I am so glad this was helpful and that you’re now following the channel! That makes me so happy!
Love the video. I think the bust darts are a bit too high and too long.
Hello dear, I am praying for your healing in the name of Jesus.
That is so kind! Thank you so much!
Hello Whitney. I thought you said in your last video that your email address was in the about page but I didn’t find it. If you don’t mind sharing it with me I would love to be able to talk privately. It sounds like we have some of the same health issues. My stomach has been distended for 2 weeks. I am on Facebook and messenger. Thank you so much for the video on mental health. God bless you. Elizabeth
Hi, Elizabeth! It’s tomkatstitchery@gmail.com

♥️
I've been sewing for over 50 years. Have not a clue what you were doing.
I’m sorry it wasn’t more clear. Anything in particular you struggled with?
I love the pattern. Please, have your gallbladder checked out.
Don’t worry! My gall bladder is actually being closely monitored at the moment. I have another scan in June, but I do have a GI doctor that I see every 6 months!
