raptor differential maintenance ford performance
I’m all for firearms content, but this is the kinda stuff the masses needs to see also. 👌🏻
Thanks! I have some other hobbies I like to sprinkle in from time to time. Been putting this off for a while and I didn’t see any videos on the 21+ Raptors, so I figured I’d share.
Fancy!. I suppose on a nice truck like yours getting the better product is kind of a no brainer
I think there was a $75-$100 difference in price between the Ford Performance one and the Spicer one when I looked. Not substantial, but still a decent savings.
Awesome video and info, thanks! Keep up the great work and keeping us up to date on new Raptor stuff
Appreciate the compliment! I’m due for some more Raptor videos, no doubt.
Great job man!! I'll be doing one soon after this video!! Thx!!
Appreciate it! It’s definitely a must do in my opinion.
Good Vid Christian
Thanks!
Nice DIY!👍👍🍻🍻
Thanks!
this is super helpful. thank you.
Glad it helps!
Well, you got me with the "21+", at first glance, It looked like an AGE RESTRICTION.😅
🤣🤣🤣 didn’t even think about that.
Great video! Thank you for sharing this clear and detailed information. Just curious any leaks or all good since?
I did end up going back and re torquing the gasket as the factory specs were higher than what I mentioned in the video. So half torque all bolt to half the spec of 33 Ft. Lbs then then torque them again to the final value. No leaks! That gasket truly makes a world of difference with leaks when compared to the factory gasket. I’ve had the factory ones leak many times.
Just an upgrade or needed maintenance ? just curious. Funny how many factory parts suck
Kinda both. I like to change my diff fluid between 30-40k. The OEM cover kinda sucks, mainly because it doesn’t have a drain plug. The upgraded cover will help me next time.
@ChristianGrest ah ok I may have to look into this then I just hit 73k I always keep up on my oil changes etc but never done one of these
@@ThecrazyScotsman I tow a lot and do some off-roading. On a regular truck, probably not necessary until 50K or so. What I've noticed with newer vehicles is that they want you to put off maintenance for longer and longer periods.... you can probably guess why this is.
@ChristianGrest copy that and yes I understand 100%
Mine is lifted about 2 inches more just put more fluid till spills out or use the top hole ?
How does the enamel on this cover hold up?
It’s a hard coating and has held up very well on both the Raptors I’ve installed this on.
@ChristianGrest thanks much. I installed something similar on my Jeep and they did not hold up after a mid-atlantic winter... weighing whether I want to try again. @@ChristianGrest
Gear lube in a bag !?!? Where was that 30 years ago?? 😅
Yea tell me about it. Way easier
@@ChristianGrest you haven't lived unless you have tried to wedge a bottle of gear lube between the body and differential. I would use a 3/8" plastic hose and still make a mess 😅
@@Michigan4Conservative been there. A fluid pump works pretty good when they work.
Is it safe to use Amsoil in ford diff. I was told any other diff fluid can destroy your differential?
Yes been using Amsoil for years. It it’s a limited slip(no e locker) make sure you add the friction modifier
@@ChristianGrest it’s 2nd gen Raptor with e lock diff
So I can use none ford diff fluid
@@mikimiki195 yes you can use non Ford fluid. Used the same Amsoil on my gen2 Raptor when I did the fluid swap.
@@ChristianGrest thank you
@@mikimiki195 you’re very welcome
did you need to re torque them from 20/25 to 33 ft pnds ???
I retorqued a week later. 33 is factory spec
So lube locker mentions to half torque then full torque, 2 passes
I did the 25 # with red loc-tite like in your video and also from reading spicer specs but then after a day I re tightened them to 33 #'s@@ChristianGrest
@@plattner01 yea unfortunately there’s a few different school of thought on these in regards to torque values. The bolts that come with these covers tend to snap at the higher torque values, hence why I went with better bolts. The higher values are needed in my opinion even with the lube locker gasket.
I went with your setup, cover and bolts with red Loctite but started at 25#'s then a day later went to 33#'s@@ChristianGrest
Just passed 10K miles on my 23'. I will definitely go this route when the time comes to swap fluid. Great video!
Any idea if the diff cover is different on the 23's vs the 21-22's? No site seems to show this part (FRPM-4033-F975) working on my 2023, but if I enter a 2022 it says it fits. Has the system just not caught up to the 23 yet, or is there a difference?
Thanks for the compliment! They’re the same diff cover for the gen2 and gen3 Raptors including the 2023 models. Pretty sure the 2024 are also the same. It’s nice that they haven’t made changes to the differential very often.
@@ChristianGrest I was leaning towards just assuming that, but I appreciate the confirmation.
For the price of new Ford these covers should be factory installed not same cheap covers. For the price of the FP cover why is the gasket n bolts crap? The Spicer cover which is exactly same is 100 less. Ford Performance-What a f rip off!
I hear ya! The Spicer cover is the better value.
