"There's no such thing as failure, only feedback" - this guy gets it
Back when tv shows and movies were all about entertaining people with an actual story and compelling characters than shoving *"The Message"* down on their throats.
This guy's love of comics is infectious. Really cool to hear him talk about working in the industry
One hundred percent, and his humbleness is humbling. This man is obviously a great talent, and his reticence at describing himself as a “professional” because he doesn’t have any formal training shows that he not only has a natural ability; but that he also worked really hard to become proficient, and consistent.
Hearing this artist speak so fondly of the process and in turn respecting the source was so wonderfully refreshing. Thank you to all for giving us a reprieve from the garbage that is out there.
Movies like Gladiator, LOTR, the OT and the PT, The Dark Knight and anything from the 80s and 90s will never be made again.
FACTS
What films are OT and PT?😅
Kinda glad that movies like the PT are never made
I wish I could argue that. At least we have them.
Ive watched & rewatched Ronin (98') so many times i could repeat it word for word
My dad had cabinets full of just about every batman comic from about 89-05. Much respect that you guys talked to Jones on your show - him and Moench made some of my favorite comics ever
Gary tripping at Frankenstein moving was great lol
Always nice to hear that someone who produces the comics actually loves them and wants them to be good.
It’s sad that it’s a rare occurrence to hear an artist say he appreciates the medium in which he works, and wants the art to be well done and created with love. That’s the way it used to be. Nowadays -artists and writers- activists use different mediums to push an agenda, and it’s their agenda that is kiIIing art.
It’s no coincidence that the quality of work in comics, movies, video games, and other forms of art have suffered. The commun!st goal is to subvert beauty with repuIsive, meaningless, and shapeless forms.
Why can’t there be more people like this at Marvel, DC, and Lucasfilm?
I hear you! Unfortunately, they’ve all been pushed out for younger, cheaper talent that know or care little about the legacy of the material.
They got kicked out the door by the activists.
I teared up listening to Kelly. My god he was one of the most amazing guests.
ME TOO!!!
Escapism as meditation is the perfect summation of what it means to us. I still feel that way every time I watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, the LOTR trilogy or Donner’s Superman. Such a brilliant analogy.
Burton’s Batman and Back to the Future.
A non-indie comic book artist with love for the medium and respect for the fans.. my God, I am overwhelmed and stunned what a refreshing and beautiful thing. This was a beautiful thing to see!
It’d be so cool if Kelley Jones worked for Rippaverse and did the art for a Blood Ruth run.
Az fangirling is always a treat and genuine.
What an absolute gem of a comic creator. I'd trade one if him for 100 of the modern day hacks.
I was in my 30's when I first read Frank Miller's Dark Night and was absolutely blown away with how powerful and effecting a graphic novel could be. Opened my eyes to a whole new way of telling stories.
Agreed. Losing track of the real world because a book or movie is so good that you are transported. That's the whole point.
You're fast becoming my favourite youtuber Gary. The enthusiasm that both you and Az have during this interview is real. Love your work!
I love Kelley’s work with Doug Moench on Batman, especially the Red Rain books
I like this guy. He's definitely one of us.
"It's like wide awake meditation" By god, when was the last time we've heard someone who talked with such love about a movie or comic book? Listening to someone such as him, with all this love and passion for the subject and art, by god, that's a breath of fresh air. I miss this: Bring this back!
OMG. I commented and I did not realize this is Kelley Jones (I just thought he was a cool writer or something). Kelley Jones!? His art changed my art. When his art arrived in the comic book store I was a moth to a flame. A master inker. He is part Frazetta, part Wrightson, and part an amazing artist all unto his own. Much love to Kelley Jones, and much love to the crew interviewing him and showing much respect. Very heart-warming gentlemen. Thank you
The Contrast between Kelly and modern day Disney, comic companies and “actresses that should not be named” is amazing. Wow.
Wow! That actually WAS an extremely accurate description of Escapism! One that I am surprised I have never heard before!
It literally is "meditation"! How many times do we read a quality book or watch a movie in the theatre and are surprised by the amount of time that has passed?!?
THAT is a "light trance". (aka Meditation)
Thia man is a true legend, protect him at all cost & make art creative again. In addition, stories & movies are suppose to be an escape from reality NOT turn it into a reflection.
One of the things I like most about Kelly Jones' inking is that he inked different colored and textured material differently. What I mean is this: Batman's costume has gray sleeves and black gloves: look at how the inks are differentiated where they meet.
I want to see his Frankenstein :)
And THERE it is right THERE, MAN: Gratitude... and LOVE. Love of the job, the medium, the ART FORM. Name these modern woke writers and artists. Your "Vita Whatevers" and "Mags Who-gives-a-F#@&"-- when have you ever--EVERRR heard them talk about about the work? The Characters??? The heroes and peers they get to work and play with???? They could CARE LESS. Why are they even in the business???? TO SUBVERT IT AND USE IT AGAINST SOCIETY. They're villains.
Wow a human! Great interview! Gotta work, stay on the grid
What a lovely man. Entertainment was so much better, and so much more enjoyable, when people like him were creating it. I wish I could go back to those days, when politics hadn't become the infestation of Hollywood that it is now.
This clip really shows difference between those who want to make art(Kelley Jones) and those who just want to produce a product(mainstream comic book industry as a whole) and I couldn't agree more with Kel's words for without respect then we will reject it and without passion for the art form how can one understand what they are trying to do?
I would tell people who wanted to create anything that if you walk into a place thinking that you are better then everyone else then that person already failed and if you do not have any passion for what you are working on then put your pencil down and leave for you are not in the right place. These are very simple lessons that creative must learn long before they even put pen to paper.
People can learn from the past and why it was the best time to be a creative for there was heart, love and respect for the profession that we do not see much of these days and it is people like Kelley that needs to remind the rest of the comic book sector of what escapism truly is.
It really is wonderful to hear an artist who appreciates the art.
I could SMELL the india ink & mando paper in this podcast. Thanks fellow nerds for bringing gems like this to us periodically 🤗🤗🤗
Such genuine appreciation. Love to see it and we need more people like this man. Bless
Kelley Jones is a legend. I love his Batman books - I grew up with this stuff. His work on Sandman is great, too - his style lends itself to darker, more horror-type stories. It's crazy to see him on this channel. Very cool.
I'm pretty sure Bernie Wrightson was a major influence for Kelley, you just can see it in his work
@@TheChzoronzon yes he was - Jones finished up one of Wrightson's comics (Frankenstein Alive) when Wrightson passed away - at Wrightson's request. They have a lot of similarities in their art.
@@cruddddddddddddddd Lovely!
Bernie's Frankenstein is probably the pinnacle of goth comic art, total masterpiece
One of the coolest and most enjoyable interviews I've seen. Thanks guys.
This guy a phantom? How is he real in this day?
Like he said, "There are others". Sadly I'm guessing that they have to be part of the silent majority in order to get and stay in work.
This was an awesome interview. Hail Kelley Jones!
His covers from Knightfall are legendary! Big fan of Red Rain too.
Those Frankenstein Monster figures in the video were so cool! I always go back to the Universal Monsters and '50s sci-fi when I want to escape. No BS, no preaching, just good old-fashioned fun at escapism 👍
Big Ups Kelley Jones 😎👍
2:43 thought I was Trippin. Had to double check to make sure The video looped
Holy shit, my bad!
This was great. A hopeful and enthusiastic interview
“If your not a fan, get out.” Ain’t that right Rachel Zeigler😂
An absolute breath of fresh air where a classic comic book lover, not just creator, gets to talk about what people can get out of the medium. Much better than having to watch talking heads perform the culture war for money. If you like comic books and want to hear someone who actually contributed to their legacy talk positively about comics watch this one, its worth it.
Huge Kelley Jones fan. His ongoing Batman run with Doug Moench is still one of my all-time favorite Batman runs. The 'done in one' Mr Freeze & Ogre issues are a particular favorite. As is the Man Bat arc.
This is Awesome!
So Much Awesome!!
Kelley Jones, Legend. Your work is treasure, and timeless. Batman Bloodstorm is one of my favourite reads. Thank you for everything.
8:50 my dad calls me Pipi Fingers🙂👍
The opening gave me goosebumps. I remember strongly how much comic books changed my life. And non fans and white-colars came in and ruined everything. Scavengers with zero soul. The fans will prevail. God bless US. :)
A very powerful title for this video, one that I definitely stand behind. We need to make escapism great again indeed. In fact, I'd say that escapism should be made GREATER THAN IT EVER WAS BEFORE. I believe that you can definitely combine diversity AND good writing in a story, but there has to be balance, with good writing and likeable characters being the top priority. Not every story has to include every ethnicity and gender, but every story that wishes to truely entertain has to be WRITTEN to entertain, and the more people it can entertain, regardless of their race, belief and genders, the better.
This was amazing. Thank you.
I really appreciate this video! It shows the level of passion not only of the fans, but of the artists who bring these characters to life!
Well, Ive always loved this guys Bane, but idk now, that cat woman might be even better!
What a good dude.
This is THE most positive youtube clip ive seen in year!!! What an amazing energy in this!!! Thank you!!!
See this level of love and care for the art from everone in this call is amazing
11:50 "It's alive! IT'S ALIVE!"
I had the pleasure of meeting Kelley Jones at a comicon event here in Italy.
I've met several comic book artists and writers during the years because I love going at these conventions, and he's one of the most down to earth, humble and nice among them.
He was super gentle and talkative and seemed genuinely pleased to chat about his work and hear my opinions and thoughts.
He's not only a great artist, but also a person that deserves praise for his attitude towards others. If you ever have a chance to go to a meet and greet with him, you won't regret it.
Kelley and people like him inspired me to pick up some art supplies and try drawing characters. I was rubbish at it, turns out it needs a spade full of talent to go with the enthusiasm! Great interview, really shows what a love for what you're doing turns something into a masterpiece. The industry would do well to take note.
So glad this got clipped … I was there, right there, at that moment , the moment between breathing in, and breathing out’. Incredible … I read all those books, everyone. Then.
Didnt expect to see Nick Mullen here
Fuck yeah. Dod bless this man. Nod and then vomit. Preach. Fake it til you make it! Hero.
This is fantastic!
Great to see Kelly on here. Big fan, read most of his comics and still have a tonne in my collection. Hope he hits Cartoonist Kayfabe soon for an in depth chat.
Ready to Deus Vult for Kelly Jones.
Legend from the good days! What a Batman run he had! 👍
And the Deadman stuff...and the rest. Can't go wrong with an artist like that.
The Sandman saga is my favorite comic series of all time, even ahead of epic pillars like The Dark Knight Returns and The Watchmen. I read it start to finish every couple of years and never come away unchanged. Kelley’s work is transcendent in that run and moves me in ways I cannot put into words.
OMFG!!! Kelley Jones!! THE KELLEY JONES!! His "Bane´s Backbreakes" is the stuff of leyends!! In the same level as Days of future past "Wanted list" and Crisis "Death of Supergirl" covers. When i was young i used to imitate his style!!
You re a leyend mr Jones!
When I was a kid my parents bought me Star Wars on VHS and it was magnificent.
I can’t imagine people nowadays doing the same thing with movies nowadays…
An amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing stream. I had goose bumps, I love my association with comic books since I bought my first one with my ‘pocket money’ (1970) and my fist one with my own money in 1976. The name drops within this stream made my toes curl.
I miss people with talent
what a fascinating interview 🙏
Beautiful and inspiring.
I’ll be honest
It took me a while to get used to the unique style of Kelley Jones.
It really clicked for me in that “Deadman” mini series with Mike Baron!
Okay… time to watch Nightmare Before Christmas!
Would Gary and AZ do a video on the top 10 Batman and Superman Graphic Novels they would buy.
If they didn’t have a background in collecting before.
I like this guy he is grounded and very real ... but not a huge fan of his art style!
What he said. Aw damn now I gotta dig into my long boxes for a few hours...
I like to think 80s era 2000AD was this vibe. And astonishing results.
I don't recall the last time I heard that much truth and honesty on the internet.
Love Kelley’s work. Just so dynamic and unique. Season of Mists is hands down my favorite of his work.
Beautiful to hear someone that understands how much some people love comics book creation and stories.
Loved that!
Always been one of my favorites! What a great guy.
9:20 it’s funny he says that cause I feel I’ve been A big kid all my life until the last few years woke sh(t running my comic book and movie to the point stop following it and with running my own business and other responsibilities I have more of adult than I do now,
great art
When Gavin McGinnis was on Friday Night Tykes and he was giving Gary crap for having all the action figures I wanted to be able to jump in so bad and ask him why he thought the ancient Roman statues and art in Italy and stuff like that was so great because he had just been over to Europe and saw all that and was talking about how great it was. That was their Legends and their mythos, the likes of the Avengers and the Justice League is Americana Mythos and the fact that these companies are willing to lose Millions upon millions of dollars corrupting it says volumes. These are the things that we look to to see ourselves. It is extremely powerful and to dismiss it as mere kids stuff is highly short-sighted.
Could you do some of these types of interviews and post them up here in long format?
What have we lost. From giants to minnows
With all the nonsense that is going on in the world today and fully aknowledging the suffering of other people, for some reason this stupidly made my eyes water. I think its from a subconcious recognition of truly what we've lost, like a well loved relative who finally accept has passed and you're never going to see again. I used to use ALL my pocket money as a kid on comics, nearly had a heart attack the first time I saw an actual comic shop and was so overwhelmed by choice that I was the literal " Kid in a candy shop" and now, with the sole exception of "The big game" I don't buy ANY current day comics as they just don't appeal to me. ALL my current day purchases are omnibus of old runs.
From the bottom of my heart thank you guys for what you do and for this video because THIS reminded me on a visceral level why I loved comics🖖🖖🖖👃❤❤❤👧
How can I get him to draw a bad ass BATMAN for me?
If I was a billionaire with looking for something to do with all my money - I would LITERALLY hire these 3 to make a team - to make a completely new IP where they decide EVERYTHING - and no one - even me got to tell them what to do. I would then tell them to take a year (or whatever they would agree would be the right amount of time) to work with content creators, communities, comic book "people", animators - you name it - and produce all the content they wanted accessible for free online, and for "cheap" in comic book form. Include everyone who wants old school comics and heroes and struggles... character building... god do you guys remember character building?... that was GREAT! - AND THEN - when the lore, universe and characters was set in stone - make a movie. An old school movie... With real people put in impossible situations, who is somehow blessed with "great power" - and thus given the means to stand up and fight this great injustice. And no - the injustice would be some giant fucking robot bursting out of the ground, nor would it be some neutered (and somehow PC) villain who you can actually relate to because "he is not actually a bad guy - he is just misunderstood!" - FUCK that! And YES there would be both males and females in the front of this group just like there always have been in the most inclusive group of people there is in the world - COMICBOOK FANS!
(Remember the old Wonder Woman? You know - not the new one who effectively commits gr-ape by having sex with an non-consenting persons body and then when it's all over gives him the most creepy smile ever when she sees him... You know the one that used to be? The moral compass of the Justice League who keeps Bruce and Clark in check whenever they begin to stray into a dark place? The woman who broke the "damsel in distress" norm in ALL media and stood tall alongside the men. Not on top of them - no - shoulder to shoulder - fighting evil! Oh wait - I forgot - this is 2023... I meant to say: WEIRD? WEIRD! Weird!)
(Another addition - Isn't it FUN how nerd culture is what's being attacked? I KNOW for a FACT - that if ANY girl wanted to join like 90% of all D&D groups - they would have been let straight in! The last 10% was so afraid of girls that they wouldn't have been able to talk to them - but seriously - the nerds were the ones not getting included in anything - usually by the type of girl who is now shouting at us to be inclusive....... Now THAT'S "WEIRD? WEIRD!" LOL)
This was great Gary. If you could get more artists/illustrators or writers on your show I think it'll be brilliant.
I'd love to see you do an interview with Simon Bisley or Alan Moore.
That was awesome
I have never been into comic books but love The Real BBC. This interview was amazing. Much respect for Kelley
Stop making me love comics! I don't want to be hurt again! Bwaaaaaaa!
Great interview… love the oldest 14 year old line of dialogue…
What a lovely bloke. Humble and talented.
I had more than once chance to meet Joe Jusko, one of my all time favorite artists. But I never did it because I was always worried what he'd be like. Like they say never meet your heroes. But seeing Kelly like this now I'm kicking myself because I'm wondering, is Joe this down to earth and cool.
"Can We protect this Man! At All Cost!! ❤ This!
