The more I think about it, the more I think maybe it's a good thing we don't have the X-Men, F4, Blade, Punisher, or Silver Surfer yet. Considering Disney Marvel's track record I wouldn't trust them handling those characters

None of them will be anything remotely close to what it once was. Especially blade and punisher. They cannot make a good relatable adult MCU show. Everything has to be rated G friendly, woke friendly and feminist friendly. Something tells me they got rid of Foggy and Karen in daredevil because that was too many white leads. Do you see Disney MCU having a show with 3 white leads ? I don’t. Not a chance in hell.

That is peak Hollywood losing touch with reality. They just inserted Hollywood culture, where the highest honor is winning something on an award show, into other professions. Iger loved kudos for buying IPs he let creatives with political agendas tank devaluing all of them. When he finally talks money over union demands creatives turned on him. Producers are meant to make it all gel and rein in writers/directors. Now the likes of Amazon's boss throws money at them to 'develop' and keep them at the studio whether they produce or not as letting them go 'looks bad'. Feige's successes saw him be handed too much power and he chose politics. Wasted money. No oversight. Yet Kennedy still has a job? Only real destruction will force real change.

This was not surprising. Most people predicted that this show would be a creative miscarriage when Disney announced they were going to do it. What made the Netflix version of Daredevil so popular was how gritty and real the environment was. The characters were grounded and complex. Disney can't do gritty. They can only do a caricature of gritty. Disney can't do complex characters either, at least not since they decided that agenda peddling was more important than character development.

Yeah, I think that’s exactly what killed the MCU. Every character was developed in a different and certain setting , with the comics. Set tone, set style, different issues facing each character. Disney wants them all PG-13, automatically compromising most characters. Some are grittier and darker than others, while others work in a much different atmosphere. Disney’s failure to work in those parameters is what translated into failure. To much of trying to force the team-ups, as well.

There is always ever only forward as a direction in live. So no, Disney can‘t just undo the past and be Disney from 10 years ago. Disney will need to rebuild and garner trust from audience, some of that audience will never return.
Is it possible? Yes, it definitely is. Disney has a huge legacy and that legacy still has an enormous fandom. So there is something to rebuild on.
BUT it will not be easy as every corner of Disney is currently incapable of doing good stuff that the fans love. Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar and Disney productions are currently failing all at the same time, showing us that the problem runs deep within the company and has taken root in every single division. Yes, Avatar did good, but that’s just a legacy distribution deal from Fox, not produced by an actual Disney entity. This complete failure over all divisions is what may make it impossible as there is just nothing going alright and seemingly not a single leader at Disney that knows how to do something that’s ok.

You should totally have her on more often, especially when discussing anything comic book related and their various adaptations into streaming and theater based media. Few are more knowledgeable. As for the "retooling" of Daredevil: Born Again, they really need to just pick up where the Netflix show left off. Perhaps set it a year or two after the events of season 3. But keep it street level, with a strong dose of a legal procedure. It has the potential to be great. But as with most things in Disney/Marvel (and Disney/Lucasfilm), it is potential that will ultimately be squandered.

Marvel TV was folded into Marvel Studios in 2019. Then muh streaming became the new obsessive focus - but without the structure, norms, and narrative disciplines of tv. Small wonder they're floundering. Agents of SHIELD was great. Inhumans was not. You can recover from that, if you have feedback, and take notice of it. TV has an inbuilt feedback loop: ads. Yeah, I don't like them either, but shows are made around an ad every 7 minutes or so, there's a creative and audience dynamic to that which is very powerful. 7 minute vignettes, advertisers telling the studio if they back the show, and audiences going along for the ride, whether half hour show or longer.
Shorter: TV is genuinely different, and DisneyMarvel ignored that in their hubris and lavish budgetary situation. All over now.

Have Disney+ do a pilot season where they air a pilot episode for, say, 5 - 10 different characters and then commission shows for the most popular. For comic fans it would kind of the TV equivalent of picking up a single issue of a character to see if you like them.

They're making drastic changes because they're worried they'll do it noticeably worse when the two shows are comparable. They're destroying the evidence. It's creative cowardice that's drive behind this. I know how this works because it's the crutch I always used myself when it came to producing anything tangible for school or for studies. I simply made it so 'unique' that it became hard to measure therefore obfuscate the inadequacies. I see through what these writers are doing because I recognise my own pattern in their work.

    • @donweatherwax9318
      @donweatherwax9318 9 місяців тому

@hadayimosi It's hard to explain because it's kind of a subtle reference. The idea is that we always assume that kids are clueless, but in fact, kids are virtually always more aware of what's really going on around them than adults think they are. In fact, often, "the kids" are _more_ aware of what's really going on, because unlike their elders, they lack the sophistication to "fool themselves".
A very dark example of this "the children know" trope is the scene in _Schindler's List_ where a group of Jews are locked in a cattle car and the train begins to pull out of the station. All around them, various civilians trudge here and there, pretending not to notice what's going on: they "don't know" about the camps, you see. But as the train picks up speed, the Jews on board see a little girl standing next to the tracks outside the station. Slowly, watching the train go by, the little girl raises her hand and draws her finger across her throat. _She_ knows what's going on: because "the children know". (I have seen this scene interpreted negatively, where the little girl is happy about it. I'm not sure I would interpret it that way. After all, those who actually instituted such policies did their best not to publicize them. In other words, you could also interpret the little girl's gesture as a very helpful warning: _They are taking you to die; don't believe what they tell you._ )
But this trope is much more common in domestic settings. For example, in _The Ice Storm,_ the parents don't tell the kids about how the various mommies and daddies are swapping partners at their kinky sex parties. But it's no use pretending: the kids can see the bowl of car keys (among other things), and they're quite capable of figuring out what's going on. As usual, "the kids know".

Maybe the MCU should debut all of its 'pilot' episodes (ok, they need to actually MAKE pilots again!) on whatever Disney owned platform is available on regular TV (I don't live in the States so I'm not familiar with the channels - is ABC a Disney channel?).
Those pilot episodes could be feature length (2hr max including ad breaks) and based upon the reaction to those shows THEN go commission the series which would only be available on the streaming platform. If the Pilot TV movies are that good, they might even encourage people to buy the D+ as a result whereas currently they are not motivated to at all.
Disney would ultimately save and maybe even make money if they took this route but the quality would be forced to improve as the non subscription audience aren't already handing their money over so their views are much more important.
The captive audience of the subscription model is what has caused the hubris of the show makers but switching even just the pilot episodes to a mainstream TV premiere would help the creatives understand what does or does not work for the general public and not just those already paying for the service.

The worst part of Disney's Daredevil is that they had a near perfect blueprint for a Daredevil show, and they just threw it out to do their own thing. They could have simply hired the writers and showrunner(s) from the Netflix series and continued the story started there. Hell, they could even kill Foggy and Karen off screen, had Daredevil quit the hero schtick, and spend the first few episodes as a law procedural. The flashbacks in the Netflix series were generally well done, so there's no reason they couldn't do something similar to cover Foggy and Karen's deaths, preferably in a scenario that makes Matt believe it's entirely his fault (cliche, yes...but right in Daredevil's wheelhouse), possibly during a fight with Bullseye.

Something I just realized is that Disney was only great for a small amount of time. At the beginning, Disney movies were just flop after flop, and they only became popular because they could put their old ten year old movies back into theaters again and again and gain traction ff of the audiences nostalgia, then they can rewrite history to say that they've always been successful. Then they started to lose their audiences again because their animated movies weren't making as much, the stories were missing something magical, so they bought Star Wars and Marvel to play off of nostalgia again, except now they ca put other companies movies inn the theaters and get nostalgic fans to follow them. But they fumbled the films ad had to try getting audiences again with more nostalgia, this time by making live action Disney remakes, which worked for a time but won't work well after the "new" Snow White. Disney has always relied heavily on nostalgia to trick people into thinking they were outstanding, but in an era where every company is vying for our nostalgia, we're all sick of nostalgia. We just want something fresh, and Disney is refusing to deliver anything new.
