Affordable Bush Flying | Is it Possible?

- Is it possible to do bush flying or backcountry aviation affordably? Almost all backcountry aviation enthusiasts know who the Flying Cowboys are. But for the average Joe - like me - the bush planes they fly are way out of reach financially. However, does this mean that the we can't enjoy back country adventures like them? Are bushflying adventures then not possible for us? Can we possibly fly with these popular UA-camrs to those off the beaten track spots on the mountains in the back country? And if so, what types of airplanes are these cheap bushplanes I am referring to, and what are they capable of?

Great job and nice videography! We should be promoting affordable and accessible aviation to as many people as possible.
Thanks, and I absolutely agree!
Loved the video ! Really helpful ! 👌🏻
I have a Kitfox 3 with a 912. It cost me $21k US and is perfect for most areas. I also have a Lazair II around $7k that is my favorite one seater bush plane. I put bigger tires on it for rough surfaces and have 2 Hirth 15hp engines
Low and slow all the way!!!!!!!
Awesome, the Lazair looks like it could be a lot of fun on a budget!
Great content! I've always been a firm believer that going on a adventure sits firmly in the will to execute, not in the size of the budget.
Thanks! I agree, there's a lot of fun flying that can be done on a smaller budget.
I'm glad if it helped
Thanks for an amazing content.
Looking forward for next videos.
Thanks, a lot coming up
That was a great video thank you very much please do the part two
Thank you. I did make that video, it's the one in my channel called "Airplane Ownership Cost", there's a link to it in the description of this video. Cheers!
If you can not afford what you want, you can always do a scratch build, its a long process, but very rewarding.
Awesome video once again. I think a follow up video with info like hangar cost, fuel cost and everything around maintenance would be great.
Thanks! Yeah that's exactly the type of cost I was refering to 👍
Great Video would love to see one on cost of ownership
Thanks! Yep will definitely do that video.
I guess it maters how you define budget. I mean, an aerolite 103 has a larger tire option and honestly that will do it.
Absolutely. There's a lot of good options for both higher and lower budgets
Goeie werk-kan nie wag om self eendag solo te gaan nie...!
Hopelik binnekort. Sterkte!
Good video , keep up the good work .
Thank you, I'll try my very best 😀
Great content. What's your opinion on X-AIR hawk?
Thank you. I have not seen one in person yet, and don't know anyone who flies one unfortunately.
Awesooome
It is 😀
Hi there I would like to buy a little bush plane. I'm interested in the Carbon Cub or a Highlander. I will be using it in the Eastern Cape Baviaans Kloof and Langkloof areas where we get lots of wind. I have never been flying besides trying to fly a glider twice with a instructor sitting behind me. I was just given the joystick to get the feeling for awhile. So I don't have experience and I would like if you could give me advise as to where I could go for help in learning more about flying in my area once I get a plane. And if you could advise which will be the best plane to buy for the best price. The safest plane obviously please. Thank you.
Kind Regards
Phillip
Hi Phillip. Firstly, that is awesome that you want to get started in general aviation! And I'm always happy to help. Send me an email with your details and I'll help where I can. I can't possibly cover it all in a comment here. My email is in the "About" section of my channel page, under Details, "View Email Address". Let me know if you don't come right. You can also send me a DM on Instagram, that is another option. Link is in the description of all my videos.
Right off the bat I'd say that training is the most important factor here, by far. With proper training you will know in what strength wind you can fly in safely, and you'll be able to handle it competently. As you want to get / fly a bushplane, starting your training in a taildragger is probably the best way to go.
As for the plane, the Carbon Cub is extremely expensive. Probably almost $100,000 (you can convert that to Rand) more than the Highlander. There aren't a lot of these in South Africa, but both are some of the best STOL (short takeoff and landing) bushplanes out there, but they certainly are not the only great bushplanes.
As for a safe plane, none of these planes' wings are going to fall of, or break in those ways, assuming you don't crash or land very very hard. Your engine choice would by far be the biggest factor around safety. A reliable engine makes for a safe airplane. And I can definitely share more info about that.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Cheers
I'd recommend a different mic and checking your mic levels. Between your slight accent and your really messed up mic it's actually pretty hard to hear
Sorry you couldn't hear clearly, did you try enabling the closed captions? Maybe I did something to screw up the sound, I see UA-cam bumped the volume down (right click on video, stats for nerds).
Doesn't seem like it's the mic, see some of my newer videos (e.g. 5 Reasons the Rotax 582 is AWESOME) where there is a clear difference in sound clarity. I think my speech has also improved in the last 2 years of making UA-cam videos 😅
How would we get it from there to the states.
Don't think ferrying is a realistic option with any of these, so would need to be shipped in a container, wings removed.
Can you fly from florida to Bahamas in a bush plane?
Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama airport is less than 100 miles...so yes, you should be able to reach anywhere in the Bahamas as these planes usually have a range of at least 300 miles, some going up to around 800.
But I am not sure about the regs/rules in the USA or Bahamas. My guess is Light Sport Aircraft would be allowed yes, with a private pilot certificate. But not Ultralights, as you don't require a license to fly one in the USA. Maybe someone who knows can chip in here regarding the regs, but as far as airplane capability goes, that would be a yes.
@@LetsGoAviate Thanks for your response! This channel has put a bush plane on my bucket list
@@hanselduran Very happy to hear that!
If you could figure out how to turn a $9,000 Fly Baby into a workable bush plane, I still wouldn't be able to afford it.
🤣 But the Fly Baby is perfect just as it is though 🙂
Challenger II cost me $6000
Yeah that's not bad!
Minimax
Haven't heard of it. Is it different from the Hi-Max?
Well plz can u suggest me a bush planes under 1000 lbs - 1100 lbs as new as kit. I want to import it to India. Henceforth New kit is suitable..
From USA I got only Belite Chipper and Ch701 I want a better airplane with some decent speed... I don't know any aircrafts in Africa.... It will be great if you suggest one.
@@marketfluxadvertisingI definitely recommend the KFA (Kitplanes for Africa) aircraft. The Explorer should be around 800 lbs empty weight and the Safari around 1000 lbs, with engine options from the Rotax 912 - 80hp to the 915 - 141hp and non-Rotax engines as well. Not sure what speeds you are looking for, but it should give you between 100mph and 130mph cruise depending on engine and wheel size etc. kitplanesforafrica.co.za/Pages/Models.asp
Another South African option is the SkyReach Bushcat, bit I have not flown them personally so can't comment.
@@LetsGoAviate No I want Mtow 1000-1100lbs or 450-490 kgs.
Then it can be considered as microlight in india. Ch701 is considered as microlight in here. I want similar one.
Ah okay got ya. If it has to be a kit, the closest one that I'm aware of in South Africa is the Cubby (from Cubby Aircraft Factory, like the yellow one in the video) with MTOW of 500kg / 1100 lbs. I can't find their website, but have a look here for specs and contact details.
