It's an example of someone that designs AND builds, which in these days of specialization is so amazing to see. Mike Patey has skill sets that you would normally expect to see spread across 6 or 8 engineers, machinists and technicians. He's somewhat of a living National Treasure. And we're lucky to have him, because he shares and teaches.
Mike is an incredible aircraft designer for sure. Draco was impressive, but Scrappy is beyond very impressive. The leading edge slat design is awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing how well Scrappy performs. Ryan, it's great you were able to interview Mike at Oshkosh. Awesome video for sure! Thanks Ryan and Mike.
This is one fantastic example for American inventive genius! I my opinion nowadays such inventions are only possible in the US - based on the free spirit of the country. Best regards from Germany
I've been fortunate enough to meet Mike a few times since he lives just down the road from me. He's one of the kindest and most brilliant people we have in general aviation.
When he mentioned the welder powered by his solar panel system, the first that came to mind was one of his "neighbors" up in Moab. Rory Irish has built a recovery business with his collection of custom recovery Jeeps and wreckers that drive out into the National Parks and rescue people that have had catastrophic crashes in the "outback" of Utah. Each of his machines have at least one on-board welder, several winches of various capacities, and many years of experience going places out there that most people never dream of. Mike and Scrappy fly out to rescue the unfortunate people that can't get out on their own and Rory and his crew are ground-bound. He climbs his trucks up and around and down over cliff faces that most people couldn't walk up. He does it with a custom built one ton daully six-wheel drive wrecker pulling a custom built trailer with a wrecked Jeep or truck on it. I'm certain that Mike ("in his spare time") could build a new branch on his channel very similar to Rory's from the airborne perspective. That would be very entertaining... all he would need is a 35 hour day!!
It's fitting to see you two together. Both of you being pilots. Patey's engineering prowess is over the top. I'm guessing, Ryan, you would love the take-off and landing characteristics of Scrappy, though you do pretty good with what you have. Good stuff, Thanks.
Some people accept, or better phrased, are content with off the shelf stuff. Some people, like Mike Patey, instead say "hold my beer son!" Innovators are gonna innovate .... and it is so freaking awesome!!!
I am a keyboard pilot. Due to medical reasons, I will never be able to fly myself, so I immerse into the virtual flight sim world. For instance, Trent Palmer's Kitfox is available for purchase in MSFS 2020. It's his plane detailed to the 9's. I fly it in the same places he does. I can recreate any of Trent's videos. But then I can hop out of a bush plane and into a DCS Huey helicopter and fly a historical Vietnam mission. It's not the same as the real thing, but it's all I can do. I would LOVE for someone to model Scrappy into a flight sim. X-Plane, 2020, whatever.
You're right, Brother!!!!! Just insane, but makes sense.....the ultimate bush airplane. The cruise performance doesn't sound so great, but! What a great rescue beastie!!!!
I hope he realizes how great an aviator and UA-camr you are! Such a smart, cool, dude. Nice to see that he may be pushing things too far and is starting to think about longevity. His. That is. Life threatening situations in 2 of his last 3 builds. No bueno. He’s got a beautiful fam and the aviation community needs people like the both of you. Mahalo.
I'm not a pilot, nor an engineer, but heck I can uderstand this is basically a jewel of a manufacturer and helluva plane and wish I could be half as talented as him
Thats the best plane setup for its class ive seen. absolutely brilliant designing. And as a dirt bike rider i love the bike option. Might be hard fitting those on a Jabiru though, lol
Hoping mike gets a good CV prop setup to gain max performance and distance. That build has been amazing to watch, of course Draco was great as well. Hope some of the innovation is transferred into bush aviation soon. I've got lots of PNG missionary friends who would benefit from higher payloads, higher delivery frequency, and reduced risk which some of these innovations would offer..
Side ways landings with preset elevations. My concern would be a unintentional prop strike on the ground. Leading edge feathering like to know more about that trick. The solar powered wing was used on an aircraft at the Reno Airshow. The alternator was removed so as to reduce engine drag and the solar panels energized all the electrical to operate the plane. It gave the engine more horse power for more speed. Not sure if that solar plane won the race.
Mike should be the new Boeing CEO. Seriously. His ability to think, conceptualise, create solutions and build successfully is way outside the box.
I'm not sure Boeing could pay him enough but MAN I would love to see what they put out after he takes over.......
Here ! Here ! This guy is a genuine innovator! Not afraid of risk , full of fun in the real world and accomplishing real goals 🙏
Boeing CEO = finance / mgmt role. Also helps to be morally bankrupt. Waste of MP’s time / talent

Mike Patey is a rare bird and he’s got my respect.
I am just OVERWHELMED by the level of ingenuity displayed in this video! What a PLANE!!!! What a Plane!!!!!

I'm hoping that he will get Draco flying again.
Oh no no no ... DRACO X ..is going to blow the roof which has already been blown by Scrappy.
This is one fantastic example for American inventive genius!

Ryan and Mike in the same video. It's amazing who aviation brings together. :)
My two favourite channels in one 🇦🇺
WOW! Talk about focused. Mike must be the ultimate in obsessiveness. Thanks for the glimse into OCD 🤩
Great interview with Mr. Patey. Only thing missing was "Back to Work!"
Thanks, Ryan.
that would have been a good ending 😋
That would have been icing on the cake!
Mike's ingenuity and raging enthusiasm is a sight to behold !
and on 4 hours of sleep a night! - I don't know how he does it, but he's a total delight to watch and listen to!
Great interview. He had me at, "plug in a welder". What a machine!

Patey is a Genius. As smart as they come
Mike & Mark Patey are “The Men”! His engineering prowess & work ethic are admirable! “Back To Work”!!!!
I am glad you caught up with him he’s a kindred spirit
Two of my favorite UA-cam channels combined. Enjoy you both tremendously.
Well done young feller on the interview . Two of the coolest aviators in one video.
Fly safe sir.
Human ingenuity is amazing! This plane is a work of art! I envy you that you got to see this beauty in person!!
Really liked this airplanes preset instrument screens. Thanks Ryan for showing this one of kind plane to us.

I would love to fly such a piece of art as Scrappy!
I built a go-cart out of a milk crate once. The wheels fell off on the first ride, broke my hand. Mom threw it away. I don't build things anymore.
Two of my favorite pilots in 1 video! This made my day!
Ditto 😁
You Ryan and Mike! I love both of your channels! THANKS!
The control display looks like a major airline cockpit. This is in a cub! Absolutely amazing
What a great interview, I frequent both your channels.
Mike Patey is an inspiration to all in aviation.
Thanx for giving Mike some screen time. Respect.🙂👍
My pleasure!
Yah been his subscriber for long... Cool to see you with Mike Patey. Wonderful guy!
This guy is a true legend. I felt so dumb listening to him talk but definitely understood the outcomes.
Nice! Great editing with inserts from Mike's build series.
So he is Mr Draco? That thing is a real beast.
Awesome stuff .. Many thanks Ryan
Mike makes me feel slightly not educated..😅😂😅
Ryan, you cannot compete with him. He is totally immersed in his subject. Thank you, Ryan. For showing me a fascinating person.
two of my favorites, this is so cool..
Mike is the best!
been fun watching this progress over the years
Scrappy is an awe inspiring marvel of engineering! The Pateys are an awe inspiring family!! Thanks for doing this video Ryan!
This is ingenious design. I think this is problem solving at its best.
Wonderful video Ryan. Help bring this plane to Australia I want a ride. What an amazing little beast!!!!
I'm no pilot but I can see that this guy is a genius. What a beautiful flying machine with amazing tech.
nice job on this vid. great interview. very exciting and inspiring to see this
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this interview - have followed Mike Patey through Draco and Scrappy build. Thanks, Missionary Bush Pilot, for the work you have done overseas.
So... for a ride in the plane... All I have to do is get lost in Utah, and he will come find me?! But joke aside. That plane is awesome!
Some people accept, or better phrased, are content with off the shelf stuff. Some people, like Mike Patey, instead say "hold my beer son!" Innovators are gonna innovate .... and it is so freaking awesome!!!
Wow. Amazing.
Always amazing to see Mike talk about his epic creation.
My cousin came to Oshkosh. I insisted that he visit you and say Hi from me. He did just that. I love your channel
Great interview!

MIKE IS ONE AWSOME MIND AND POILT
Like Chris Farley said, Awesome !!! Scrappy is a Beast😱
Bush pilots are something else... "Should the runway be level? No, it's my plane that needs to be pimped out with bouncy car technology!"
Incredible.
WHAT A BEAST!
Thanks Ryan - your channel brings so much info. be blessed
Pushing the envelope. Hope you had a great weekend. "Back to work".
AWESOME, two of my FAVORITE PILOTS !!!!
Two of my favorite Aviation Tubers. Good job Ryan. That was great for sure!
Very beautiful plane!

That's about the coolest plane I've seen in a while
Awesome vid and plane modifications 👍
That is by far the most impressive airplane I have ever seen!
Mike builds mean flying machines!
I’ve never seen so much tech on a bush plane🤯
Truly impressive!!
But we've never seen it fly. Mike should fly the STOL plane demonstration at Oshkosh for all to see and evaluate its performance.
Tons of videos of Scrappy flying on UA-cam.
@@laurapitre5797 Mike demonstrated Draco flying at Oshkosh for years. Why not scrappy? People want to see it in person to evaluate it.
Way beyond genius. I'm totally impressed! Thanks!
Mike is simply brilliant. He's contributions to aviation will be felt for generations to come. Truly awesome.
Fun cool fact. Mike is nicer in person. Met him at 2021 Osh. Just an incredible individual.
This airplane is a real beast!
What a cool airplane!
Awesome video! I follow both of you and seeing you together was pretty cool. Now Mike should work a day with you!
Thanks for good stuff. Mike is the man.
Amazing engineering.
What?!!! This is phenomenal!
What an absolute gem of a plane.
Go watch his channel "Mike Patey". The man is a genius and such a nice guy too.
Good idea w/ the screens...
Fantastic!!!
One of the coolest planes I've ever seen.
Mike is a legend!!
No hot tub on that thing?! C'mon! hahaha
LOL! Yeah, Scrappy does have a swiss army knife vibe, doesn't it?
Mike is a genius for sure.
Mike is a great engineer, fantastic skills and quality of work, but there sure is a lot to go wrong on this experimental plane. Great video!
Just amazing!!!!!
What a great purpose driven aircraft! Well done to MP, and thanks for sharing Ryan!
That was great! Well put together video... and amazing aircraft!
Probably the BREGUET 941 hyperlift technic could interest M. Patey ?
Super, mega cool plane!! Great engineering and design!!
What a wonderful guy!
Great interview! That plane is so impressive. Glad I got to see it this year at OSH.
Hoping mike gets a good CV prop setup to gain max performance and distance. That build has been amazing to watch, of course Draco was great as well. That plane is indeed INSANE!
Excellent stuff bro
Great interview 👍 👏
Unbelievable!!! What a monster!
Simply awesome.
Mike is the man

It's thought it also had a BRS? I watched a lot of the build, remember him testing one.
