I accidentally bought another crashed EV / Porsche 928 EV project (Ep.21)

- My Electric Porsche 928 EV Conversion project continues. I threw in a silly bid at auction and ended up winning this dual motor AWD Tesla Model S 75D. So now I have lots of options regarding powertrain for my Porsche 928 EV conversion. Or maybe for the next project.
In this episode, I put the tools down and check out what's happening with Wayne's Honda S2000 EV conversion, and inspect my new car which suddenly arrived. Stolen, fanged, crashed, written off, and then bought by me. Fearing the worst, we go find out what's wrong with it. As if I don't have enough to do.
If you enjoy this story and are as keen as I am to see the EV Porsche on the road, then why not SUBSCRIBE so you can see episodes as they appear.

Nice buy Stu. The main reason for the Stat write offs in NSW is because of a huge amount of extremely dodgy repaired cars that were streaming out of Western Sydney 10+ years ago. There were a bunch of measures to RTA tried to stem the shonks, but it didn't work so they shut it down completely. A very large dodgy contingent ruined the whole industry ;)
Thanks Jeff
Stu you landed on your feet wth this one, gamble paying off for next EV project having pretty well a complete set of parts, excepting front drive shaft
I've seen cars here in the UK classified Cat S with no structural damage and could have been repaired for a fraction of the cars value. Apparently, some insurance companies are trialling AI to look at the photos and automatically classifying cars as write offs when they're nothing of the sort.
There is something wrong with our insurance and rego legislation. That car does not look like a complete write off - the airbags were not even triggered. I can see why it *may* be a financial write-off but would appear to be repairable.
Agree. No structural damage evident. Spend oh I dunno about $10k and it would be a $45+k car. But not allowed...
Love this and have been really enjoying the series. Silly old buggers having fun with their toys.
I'm still considering EVing one of my late 80's Saab 900 combi-coupe's - as little as 150km range would do me nicely.
Last century I owned a couple of Saab 900s - one 3-door hot rod and one family sedan. They had a particular charm with their quirky styling, upright seats, velour ambience, comfy ride and torquey turbo motors. Be an interesting car to convert to EV.
You a crazy man Stan!
.
Stu, that 928 was always crying out for Tesla power. Now hopefully its bark will be as good as its bite!
I'm thinking maybe the second 928. Or if I can't get the MG stuff to work. I'm actually keen to see how it performs with the MG hardware. Pretty good torque - it should be OK. The next one can be the barnstormer, and start with a better donor car.
As someone who has just found your channel i find it very interesting. I am very much not a EV person but for something like a S2000 or a 928 i get the ev conversion idea. If the car is ment to be used as a daily driver, or as a cruiser then EV makes sense in short range applications.
As a electrician i also do love to watch the nitty gritty parts.
This wheel - is it rubber? No, govnor it's aluminium!
SCORE on the boot Christmas presents!

There is definitely nothing wrong with owning a Porsche 928 and a Tesla Model S at the same time… I can relate ;)
Winner of the fastest comment award. Ta!
It's not just your industry. Ours is mad too. 2 categories (n and s) from non structural and structural damage. But cars are seemingly categorised at random allegedly just from a few pictures. I bet you can guess who doesn't lose out from the process!
Anyway, another great video. I can't wait to see nwhat you put the guts of the Tesla into!
The excitement when your new Tesla arrives…. On a pallet.
UK insurance is the same. The cost of the assessor and the hire car and the 1 in a million risk means anything under £20k just gets written off. I guess that’s the maths and they just don’t bother. But the environmental energy needed to make a whole new car and ship it out to Australia….
Great find. How much did you pay at Auction
After fees and freight (1000km) ten grand
Is it possible to repair the Tesla yourself? Seems like it would require a lot less work than a conversion.
Unfortunately it's not legally allowed to be driven on the road anymore even though there is no structural damage
It certainly would be, but the VIN has been recorded on the Statutory Write-off register, which means the car cannot be re-registered anywhere in Australia. But it could be fixed and exported.
Or fixed and not re-registered. I'm sure there's some "off-road" uses for it.... like a burnout car for the Summer Nats. Too soon ? 😁
@@tepidtuna7450 Not too soon at all. Clearly the prunes that nicked it have already proven it's up to the job for some circle work.
I want to see the police footage of the car chase that wrote off the Tesla.
Sadly Sentry mode was only introduced in 2017. There doesn't seem to be any way to view old footage in this car. But I can see from the energy use graph that somebody was absolutely caning it for the last 30 km. Probably doing "circle work" until it clouted a curb.
Crazy you can’t repair it. Wouldn’t take much to get it back on the road.
