This is ELO's answer to Pet Sounds. I remember ELO being at their height around 1978ish. In 1976 glam rock was becoming a distance echo and Anarchy in the UK punk and newwave was the thing. went to see them at bingly hall in 1977, what an experience, one of the first bands to use lasers at their concerts , mindblowing at the time, i was 14 :) im 56 now and still love them, what a genius jeff is
Blue Oyster Cult was the first to use lasers. In the manner they did it ,OSHA shut them down by 1980. ELO's lasers were presented differently, but were very effective for their show. I remember ELO's concert being one continuous menagerie of classic songs, and JL often yielded the stage to the other members. Bev Bevan was a very solid drummer; one of the best I've ever seen. Mik Kaminski could steal a show at the drop of a dime and Kelly Groucutt sang the operatic vocals. The Wembley clips mirror the show that I witnessed.
That ending feels like someone free falling in the air in slow motion trying to reach out heaven with his hands, he can see its bright light but he's slowly dying in the process believing he will get there to no avail. He's trying to pull up while everything is pulling him down in an ethereal void.
I am amazed that no one has ever used the end of Shangri-La in a film, it's such a powerful piece of music.

This and Supertramp's Crime of the Century are my two favorite albums ever.
"Crime of the Century" is a Masterpiece!!!
The outro on here is what made me realize how great this band was totally breath taking
My Words: I really adore this classic by the ever legendary Electric Light Orchestra. Shangri-la is such a powerful song i have ever encountered.
P.S My favourite piece @ 4:06.
It is just the most beautiful song i ever heard. By god, my love for the Electric Light Orchestra is out of this world.
My love for this spectacular band has been in my heart since 1986 and i was 3 years old. All these years later i still enjoy it after 35 tremendous years. I shall keep on loving ELO for many years to come, hopefully generations.
God I wish I was back in the 70s. Playing out all day, daisy Duke and starskey and hutch at night then headphones on in bed listening to ELO !!
3:47 onwards is literally when you enter the world of Shangri La thanks to the beautiful instrumental section which makes so many of the great ELO songs so great
That outro gives me chills everytime! That part alone is one of my favourite pieces of music.

That outro gives me chills!
ELOs perfect finish on New World Record. One of the best songs ever.Thank you Jeff.

An underrated ELO classic!! I don't think Jeff Lynne ever came up with a bad song, Brilliant!!
ua-cam.com/video/CxvszDakXJc/v-deo.html
I love everything he did bar the diary of Horace wimp which was a silly pop song imo
Epic album
I dont know why but I love the way this particular ELO album ends, with a beautiful depressing song...
Kuiama is there best album closer in my opinion.
He really knew how to bring the curtain down on an end of album
the best outro in history, despite ending with a fade
I did see Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra in New York 2016 Toronto in 2018 and 2019. They were voted the best live classic Rock Band in the world 🌎 and after seeing about more than 200 concerts in my life I totally agree. Let’s hope they tour one more time in 2022-2023. I will go wherever they play.🙏❤️👍
You lucky Guy you are... I had never seen ELO live😩😭 But how say's Mr. John Miles (RIP): ELO was my first Love and it will be my Last... ☝️🤗😎😃 Stephan S., Bad Schwartau, Germany...
I never heard that, who voted them that?
The end of this song is one of the best pieces of music of ELO. Makes me almost cry, so beautiful
ua-cam.com/video/CxvszDakXJc/v-deo.html
Wonder why my generation cannot make music like this anymore
Yeah really. Music come and music go, but there will never be another ELO. "The sons of Beatles". It's from another planet, they traveled here in that spaceship to send their messages of joy and love. Jeff Lynne is a musical genious. 😎🛸
People don’t care about the quality of music just the profit
still in Love with this Band
Perfect example of why they stand the test of time!
Me too Tammy since the mid 70s 😊👍
Forever, for sure!
Me too, Tammy Kallatch, me too. LOVE...LOVE.....LOVE!!!!!!
Jeff Lynne, I'll always love you. A genius you truly are, darling!
can we share him?
Just when you think you're done loving a Jeff Lynne song, the outro kicks in and so does your AWE!

So many stories of people listening to this as a child on a vinyl. I cant relate because I'm quite young, love this music either way. ELO is probably one of my favourite groups ever. My favourite songs by them are tightrope and ticket to the moon, or midnight blue, or anything they've put out. Ever.
and i thought i was the only one
ua-cam.com/video/CxvszDakXJc/v-deo.html
Same 🙏 amen
ahh, Midnight Blue is a heartbreaker of a song
I love the ending of this song. It's very moving.

ELO is the one group that has amazing popular songs..but yet most of their best hidden gems are less unknown. Crazy! The only bad part is that you never hear them as concerts.
I was a teenager when this album was released and I played it until the needle on my record player wore out. LOL
One of my top 10 songs all time=the outro is outrageous-and Jeff was just 28 when he composed it !!
Jeff’s finest song, and an absolutely wonderful piece of music 😄❤️🙏☯️
Jeff Lynne is an underrated musical genius. no wonder George Harrison asked him to produce his album.
I must have listened to this album at least 50 times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It's even more beautiful now. Jeff Lynne's singing voice is spectacular.
(I'm getting out)
(I'm getting out)
Sitting here, waiting for
Someone calling at my door
Too bad
I'm getting out of love
What's the use of changing things?
Wonder what tomorrow brings
Who knows?
I'm getting out of love
My Shangri-La has gone away
Fading like The Beatles on "Hey Jude"
She seemed to drift out on the rain
That came in somewhere softly from the blue
(I'm getting out)
(I'm getting out)
Clouds roll by and hide the sun
Raindrops falling on everyone
So sad
I'm getting out of love
My Shangri-La has gone away
Fading like The Beatles on "Hey Jude"
She seemed to drift out on the rain
That came in somewhere softly from the blue
My Shangri-La has gone away
Fading like The Beatles on "Hey Jude" (Judy baby!)
She seemed to drift out on the rain
That came in somewhere softly from the blue
I'm getting out of love
Where is my Shangri-La?
Where is my Shangri-La?
I'm getting out of love
I will return
(I will return)
I will return to Shangri-La
(I will return)
I will return to Shangri-La
(I will return)
I will return to Shangri-La
@Jennifer Puhl just using someone's name there isn't bringing politics into it. It's just someone's choice of what to call themselves when adding a(in this case, totally non-political)comment. They haven't even spelled it the same...
@Jennifer Puhl Jeff Lynne ain't no socialist Jenn. Although his home city, Birmingham in England, does have a loony left council.
@Jennifer Puhl you girl SCREWED UP
The ending is haunting of shangrila. The best
@Jennifer Puhl My name is: "victory of Trump", not "Donald Trump". If you know english you should have known that, learn english first.
I’m 65. I still adore Jeff Lynne & ELO. I rate them one of the best bands ever. Jeff Lynne is pure genius. It’s on my bucket list to see them one more time whether he comes to Australia 🇦🇺, or I will go overseas to catch a concert
Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO the bestClassic Rock band in the world!!!
I wish there is a LOVE button instead of "Like"
...there is, in your heart...
The best ELO song you've never heard...
This is ELO's answer to Pet Sounds. I remember ELO being at their height around 1978ish. In 1976 glam rock was becoming a distance echo and Anarchy in the UK punk and newwave was the thing. As someone wrote in the comments this album and track is timeless. I hope one day Jeff Lynne releases some of the demo's we may not of heard before
The Melody is Brilliant. I was in Pre-Univ Singapore 1981 when crazy Jeff fan first introduced ELO to me ha
No hay ninguna canción de este álbum que no me guste, todas las canciones están hermosas, pero ésta en particular no deja de sorprenderme
Claire Susan Taylor of Middleton, Manchester you'll never hear this and never know what we could have had. !!!!
Hurts huh :(
a great ending to a fantastic album
Jeff Lynne and ELO have given us so much brilliant music. Thank you!
Still can't find an aclaimed album that has an ending as epic as this.
Thank you, Jeff, for hitting my heart so badly!
I know, but what about Crime Of The Century by Supertramp? It comes near. And then there is this other ELO album, Eldorado...
ua-cam.com/video/CxvszDakXJc/v-deo.html
London calling, paranoid, quadrophenia, Yankee hotel foxtrot.
J.k. ✌️ Eldorado.... You are friend🤗 Stephan, Germany
Hi!
4:00 to 4:10 might only be 10 seconds but that secondary piano that kicks in as brief as it may be is just stunning! I've probably rewind that a few hundred times now, the best.
ua-cam.com/video/CxvszDakXJc/v-deo.html
The greatest Rock group in my opinion
Almost brings you to tears......

Thanks!
went to see them at bingly hall in 1977, what an experience, one of the first bands to use lasers at their concerts , mindblowing at the time, i was 14 :) im 56 now and still love them, what a genius jeff is
I beat you I'm 79years YOUNG will be listening till the day I LOL FROM AUSTRALIA 😎😎😎
Sounds like me. Also 56. Saw them at MSG in '78 inside the spaceship. One of my top 10 concerts and I've seen some amazing ones.
The Wembley clips mirror the show that I witnessed.
i was there also john. just a seat away from catching bevs drumsticks. 4 rows from front i was. fantastic concert
Powerful. Sobering. Passionate.
highly underrated song. Glad i just found it today
Jeff ist Rachmaninov, Chopin, unserer Zeit...unglaublich was er den Menschen geschenkt hat...nicht von dieser Welt, dieser Mann!!!❤
Всех Времён и Народов!!!
Shining masterpiece and it's never lost its Shine. Even after all these years
That ending feels like someone free falling in the air in slow motion trying to reach out heaven with his hands, he can see its bright light but he's slowly dying in the process believing he will get there to no avail. He's trying to pull up while everything is pulling him down in an ethereal void.
this is genuienly the most beautiful piece of music i have ever heard in my life.
Bev's drumming is perfection
Bev’s drumming is ELO. His drumming is so much of the classic sound of this band. Surprisingly, some think it is uninspired.
Thank God for Jeff Lynne in my life !
