I unexpectedly lost my father less than a week ago. This was one of his favorite bands, and one of his favorite songs. I hadn't seen him in years but we connected for the last couple years via telephone. My phone was disconnected for lack of paying my bill, and that happened to be the last day of his life, where he sent me some text messages that I didn't receive until the next day, when he had already passed. It’s funny how well this song has aged. Even if we’re past the landline and onto cellphones, the emotional tones and touches still ring true more than 40 years later. Amazing.
Now if we could just get people past being on those damn smart phones constantly and maybe pay attention to their driving or actually - horror of horrors - communicate face to face....
How well it's aged? Because newer somehow means better? You must be pretty depressed by Bach and Louis Armstrong then, because that music is really old.
How is it that I can remember every word to hundreds of 70s and 80s songs, yet I spend half my life looking for my keys, phone, or the reason I came upstairs?
One of ELO's greatest songs, full of emotional yearning. Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius. How can so many incredible songs come from the mind of one person? We are so blessed to have him.
I bought a bunch of CDs in the late 1980s. El Dorado was in the mix. The clerk pulled that one out and said it was an excellent choice showing good taste in music. I still have the CD.
My mom passed away Jan 12 2019. 82 years old! We sang ELO growing up while doing chores! We played this album at her memorial service! 💗 I’m 56 but still feel like a kid when I play your music!!! #ELOforever
To my soulmate in Heaven Jeffrey Lee Kraus. God, I miss you, I miss us, spending our lives together singing and slow dancing in the kitchen with every ELO song that will continue to beat in my heart evermore. ❤️ I love you endlessly ~ ❤️❤️ ~ I see you in my dreams, feel you all around me, and can still smell your cologne, so I know you're always near. Meet me when I take my last breath, it's going to be so beautiful! 💞
Before internet, answering machines, just a dial tone to reach out to family and friends. The frustration and heartbreak when no one is answering. A truly beautiful song! I'd cry when it came on radio. Lord, I'm old..lol I even remember party lines at Maw Maw's house. Good times!
A few years ago Maroon 5 did song where the phone, a pay phone was central to the lyric. But where can you find a pay phone any more? But this song does take you back to when the phone was the primary means of communication (we also wrote letters, they just took a while, unlike the instant transmission of email). Remember only making long distance phone calls on the weekends because the rates were lower?
There were many nights I used pay phones. Now it's about making sure your phone is charged up. Is it me that actually misses talking and hearing someone else's voice. Texting just seems impersonal.
My dog who I've had since I was 5 years old just passed away today. She'll never be able to see my graduation or anything that comes after, but in life she was suffering from a terminal illness which rendered her unable to do pretty much anything. I have no idea how long my grief is going to last, and how much longer I'll be bawling my eyes out because of her, but this song has helped me out a lot. Seeing her pass onto the other side has left me lonely, and I wish I had a telephone line to communicate to her with. There's clearly been a lot of heart and emotion poured into this song's lyrics and composition, and it's really nice to have something to resonate with.
When I saw the first few lines of your comment I thought 'here we go' but read on and could relate to pets I've had in the past. They will be a part of you forever, just like people, and for some, even more so. When you cry, thinking of the memories, don't you feel better after? I hope so. That's your telephone line.
I’ll admit as a huge metal fan I looked up this song half joking as a reference from Billy Madison and ended up on incredible crash course in incredible songwriting. These guys are amazing. I couldn’t believe how good this song was when I actually sat down and listen to it
Dude same. I got this album from my aunt who didn’t want hers anymore and put it on today just because of Billy Madison. Whole thing was sick. I’ve also watched the Billy Madison scene about 10 times today on UA-cam.

@@rebekahtowers7130 Precisely. This song got HEAVY airplay when I was a little boy. I dare say it was inescapable. It was nice to be raised on music like this.

My oldest brother died a few years ago. This song kills me. And now his daughter, my niece, has been gone a year. People, call your loved ones today. You never know where they might be tomorrow.
This is my favorite ELO song. I love the deep drums, I love the orchestration. I love the vocal harmonies. I love the subject, the lyrics and the evocative emotion of this song. I love how it reminds me of my youth - so much that it brings tears. I could listen to this a million times and never get tired of it - straight to my heart! Completely beautiful what a classic!

Also there's plenty of amazing music being created today across all genres. No one is forcing you to listen to the drivel that radio and the mainstream feeds you.
I love how he added in the line ringing at the beginning; it really adds to the song, for those of us old enough that we lived through a time where there were phones that didn't have an answering machine or voicemail, and the phone just rang and rang sometimes when there was someone we REALLY wanted to talk to.
That’s what I Love about this song is the old school ringing of the phone 📱 international sound I was in Japan 🇯🇵 called my mom in Ohio and it rang like that no voice mail nothing those were the days
Jeff Lynne has certainly forged his own path with ELO's music. There's literally no other artist that was blending rock and orchestra the way they were. I've always felt that his brilliance deserves far more recognition.
Actually, many groups used orchestras in the 1970s. Just a couple of others, BREAD, Chicago, etc. Music historians have stated this was the the apex of popular music as far as creativity and musicality. Since then it has been in a steady decline. The music the youth listens to now is pure trash.
@@jamesschmidlin1127 My comment, "There's literally no other artist that was blending rock and orchestra the way they were" still stands as 100% truth.
elo and donna summer were about the only music acts that had multiple hits played daily on the radio all the time in the 70's - back then it was most often 1 hit per band for a couple months, then some had another one follow up later - if that makes any sense i think mid 70's ELO was surely the biggest band on earth with a live show that was just unbelievable
My cousin passed away earlier this year due to Covid and this song was one of his favorites. Everytime I play it I think of him. I love it myself. I feel close to him when I play this song.
+Dannie Spokes well I'm 26 and I think I enjoy ELO music more now as I'm older etc...its shame that the UK hasn't or won't produce anymore musical geniuses like Jeff Glynne anymore 😢

So many people needing to keep in touch via phone, and so many workers and volunteers manning phone lines to support vulnerable people, thinking of them all.
A New World Record of which this is from is their last good record. ELO jumped the shark with the follow-up, Out Of The Blue. It's Over and Sweet Is The Night harken back to better times but stuff like Turned To Stone could have been on the Xanadu Soundtrack.
June 3rd, 2024!! ELO, The Ides of March, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Who, Carly Simon, The Johnson Brothers - these artists, and many others- forever stamped on time! A lot of good times, too. God Bless you, whoever you are, reading this! Music soothes the savage beast!
Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay. For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?” Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!
June 76 I had it all; car, cool chick, (later my wife 2 sons 4 grandkids she’s now in heaven), and we sat by the lake at night listening to this…

I’m 147 and this song played at my retirement party.
Of course ELO weren't underrated! All this "underrated" bs comes from ignorant youngsters..
I'm 33 and they are comfortably in my top 5 all time favourite bands
@@matthewholloway6328 Great to see a younger person swimming against the underrated bs stream 👍
It’s funny how well this song has aged. Even if we’re past the landline and onto cellphones, the emotional tones and touches still ring true more than 40 years later. Amazing.
Music is timeless
Truly ❤
Now if we could just get people past being on those damn smart phones constantly and maybe pay attention to their driving or actually - horror of horrors - communicate face to face....
Amen!
So very true!
Hahaha
Right on.
Music can bring people back from dementia and Alzheimers - lots of neurocognitive inter connects.
Hilariously (& painfully) astute!! 🤣😂🤣
This song sounds like if Elton John, David Bowie, Queen and the Bealtes wrote a song together.
A masterpiece!
I just thought the same
Jeff Lynne is a genius.

Man, I keep coming back to ELO. What a magical band. My hats off to you Jeff Lynne.
One of ELO's greatest songs, full of emotional yearning. Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius. How can so many incredible songs come from the mind of one person? We are so blessed to have him.
some songwriters just got "it", and man--does he have IT. Pure musical genius.!!

I'm not generally an ELO fan, but this is one of the best songs ever written.
It is what most people want to say but they don't
One of the single most underrated bands in the history of music. Their collective musical genius is up there with Brian Wilson.
They thought Pink Floyd was ahead of his time. These guys are way beyond that.
Not underrated by me!
I bought a bunch of CDs in the late 1980s. El Dorado was in the mix. The clerk pulled that one out and said it was an excellent choice showing good taste in music. I still have the CD.
Who is Brian Wilson?
Well, they're not too underrated - I mean they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
My mom passed away Jan 12 2019. 82 years old! We sang ELO growing up while doing chores! We played this album at her memorial service! 💗 I’m 56 but still feel like a kid when I play your music!!! #ELOforever

Jeff Lynne is an actual musical genius.
No doubt! 💯
And one of the best voices in rock 'n roll.
He's a Wilbury for sure.
Glad you realized that..
I think I am totally in aggreance with that..😉
Before internet, answering machines, just a dial tone to reach out to family and friends. The frustration and heartbreak when no one is answering. A truly beautiful song! I'd cry when it came on radio. Lord, I'm old..lol I even remember party lines at Maw Maw's house. Good times!
👌
A few years ago Maroon 5 did song where the phone, a pay phone was central to the lyric. But where can you find a pay phone any more?
But this song does take you back to when the phone was the primary means of communication (we also wrote letters, they just took a while, unlike the instant transmission of email). Remember only making long distance phone calls on the weekends because the rates were lower?
Just last month, NYC removed the final two public phone booths
There were many nights I used pay phones. Now it's about making sure your phone is charged up. Is it me that actually misses talking and hearing someone else's voice. Texting just seems impersonal.
Dear Love, you're not old. Smile and be happy.
Losing a pet, for many of us, is sometimes worse than losing a relative.
When I saw the first few lines of your comment I thought 'here we go' but read on and could relate to pets I've had in the past. They will be a part of you forever, just like people, and for some, even more so. When you cry, thinking of the memories, don't you feel better after? I hope so. That's your telephone line.
They have always been underrated. No idea why.
Really good music.

I’ll admit as a huge metal fan I looked up this song half joking as a reference from Billy Madison and ended up on incredible crash course in incredible songwriting. These guys are amazing. I couldn’t believe how good this song was when I actually sat down and listen to it
The real joke is that Adam Sandler is a huge ELO fan.
Dude same. I got this album from my aunt who didn’t want hers anymore and put it on today just because of Billy Madison. Whole thing was sick. I’ve also watched the Billy Madison scene about 10 times today on UA-cam.

I love how he added in the line ringing at the beginning; it really adds to the song, for those of us old enough that we lived through a time where there were phones that didn't have an answering machine or voicemail, and the phone just rang and rang sometimes when there was someone we REALLY wanted to talk to.

The music the youth listens to now is pure trash.

elo and donna summer were about the only music acts that had multiple hits played daily on the radio all the time in the 70's - back then it was most often 1 hit per band for a couple months, then some had another one follow up later - if that makes any sense

Telephone Line lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay.
For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?”
Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!
This song breaks my heart and makes me cry.
Thank you 😊
