I've done industrial music, and experimental noise music since the 80's and this is a technique I've used with reverb quite a bit. It makes almost everything sound like a synthesizer. I used to do this before DAWS were a thing, and I would do it manually. But once DAWS and plugins came around, this became REAL easy to do. One of the things I used to love to do with this technique was that I would get a three or four minute recording of anything, like a radio station playing music, or talk radio, or even just one of those sound effect CD's or records that they used to sell back in the day. I take the recording and just... automate the volume, having it start at 0 and I would just, randomly kick the volume up to the maximum that I wanted the volume to be for a few seconds, and then I would drop the volume back to 9 again. I would do this randomly through the whole track, so it would just sound like someone's on the volume knob of a radio, turning it all the way up and then off randomly. Once that's set, run that audio through a reverb effect like this with no dry, and relatively high reverb. The results create a LOT of interesting random sounds that just sound awesome rolling in and out of the music. It's excellent to throw in the background of one of your mixes if you're into doing experimental stuff.
As someone who does a little music production every now and then just as a hobby or something creative to do to clear the mind, I rewatch your "from loop to song" and lo-fi videos regularly, ever thought about remaking those or having another stab at them maybe adding something you've learned over these years? Congrats on 1mil, you really do deserve all the success in the world, this is the best channel for FL enthusiasts and if it wasn't for it countless people would've missed out on getting their sounds out of their heads and into reality
Was pleasantly surprised, as I was using the Convolver + white noise technique for the woodwinds/flute sounds just earlier this week. And thought it was already taught by you because I know Convolver from one of your earlier videos =) Thanks a lot for you videos!
From my subjective perspective, the operational mechanism of this tool bears striking resemblance to that of the esteemed Valhalla Shimmer plugin. Its integration into my creative workflow has become a near-daily ritual, as it imbues certain synthesizers with an ethereal and otherworldly sonic quality that is truly captivating.

Your tutorials have been so wonderful over the years mate thank you for all you do it makes music fun and enjoyable well done sir well done indeed huge like 330 !!!!
because of this tutorial, i discovered the counterpart of Ableton's Corpus (using the FX > Metal Tube preset) and fiddle with the wet, self conv, and the stretch to add texture to the sample I'd like to add to. great tutorial indeed! 🥰
Funny enough, I use the convolver actually more often for blurring than for reverb! :) It's indeed gorgeous! Therefore, you taught me in this video that Valhalla Supermassive can do blurring too with that preset! I will give that a shot next!
I recently started using blured pads as some sort of hidden theme. Sometimes I keep them, sometimes I leave them at the end, but they are fantastic to get into a specific mood to set the tone for the rest of the composition.
convolver is definitely highly underrated..u got alot fo room reverb plugins but this plugin is quite exception for a stock plugin also u can so alot with its functionality. I think u brought up a great point toward the end as far as its cpu usage. if ur already using a tone of cpu this is a good way to even it out at the end
I thought the coolest thing about this technique was overlooked for sound designing purposes - you don't have to stop at a white noise or pink noise sample. You can literally put any sample as your impulse response. People who make a dubstep subgenre called color bass will sometimes use a pad playing a chord to convolve an atonal bass or percussion in order to make it sound tonal. If I'm not mistaken Au5 has a video on this where he uses MCabinet instead of Fruity Convolver Edit: found the video, it's called 6 ways to color bass and the convolver section starts at 8:57
ive recently stumbled across this in edison, its especially good if you filter a flex pattern through it for a seriously deep and resonant layer full of progression with the underlying flex pattern and effects, didnt think of the attack and release though that adds another layer :D the effect you get with your guitar is sublime.
A little tip for the ones contemplating VSX. Grab the Acustica Sienna free version, I compared it with my VSX and ended up sending them back as I felt Sienna sounded very similar. Plus the VSX headphones whilst now redesigned feel really cheap. Sienna can be paired with lots of popular headphones and you can get going for free!
Great tip! I like the transitions and the way you edit your videos. Could you make a tutorial for those of us who want to start in the world of UA-cam tutorials? Thank you!
I should make an updated video one day but in short: I use Davinci Resolve which is just a fantastic program for video editing. I learned a few transitions from a great channel called @MrAlexTech He has free transition and zoom packs/tools but I donated a little to support his channel. I am no expert with video stuff so I really appreciate folks who share good knowledge like he does!
hey michael, the guitar part with Supermassive.. was magical man. i mean, yes, i am stoned, but i was just looking at the window while listening to your video... and suddenly i was tripping and feeling stuff. it was good. maybe you can put some artistic stuff like that in the videos, so we also enjoy the musical part, kind of like eastern eggs. awesome video!
Man, I would really love to use FL Studio's effects while playing guitar. Currently, I use FL to make samples from recorded sounds out in the world or from sample I make entirely in FL. The amount of effects available in FL is so impressive that it would save me literally thousands of dollars on pedals. Just a couple of days ago, I spent close to a $1000 on two reverb... 2... just 2.... pedals (Strymon Big Sky and Earthquaker Devices' Avalanche). I don't even want to think of what i spent over the last month, or how much I'll spend next month. Analog pedals sound so much better; in addition, they 'feel' much closer to real time reactions to my playing (especially when playing a 20 note phrase of 64th notes, for example). With real pedals, the reverb feels like it's coming out of the guitar itself, as opposed to reacting to it. Again, especially noticeable during faster or complex chord changes on 6 strings. My PC is no slouch either. Ahh well, i can dream that, perhaps, one day, PC digital effects, amplifiers/preamps and cabinet modelers will sound, and most importantly, play much closer to the real thing that manufacturers stop making hardware, and Fl will have all we need....one day. WARNING: Don't ever buy a Strymon, Chase BLiss or Meris (to name only three) effect pedal. If so, your bank account will be so empty, within a month, that it wouldn't sound thick and full; instead, it would start sounding just like a nice Strymon Plate reverb.... hahaah.... get it? :D
I actually found the blur pink and white before I had any clue how to use FL at all and added it in to pretty much an entire song haha fun to see how you can use it a bit more professionally
Very cool effect. I managed to reproduce it pretty well in Pro Tools by loading a 30 second, dual mono white noise WAV into Convology XT and fiddling with the settings. Control of the envelope and EQ is not nearly as intuitive. But it works. I made the white noise WAV with the Avid Signal Generator plugin. Convology is including with subscription plans. I expect it could be done with most convo verbs provided they let you load your own IRs and give you some envelope control.
