Called a repair shop that offered to charge me a 145 plus labor for the whole unit. I cringed, and looked on youtube. Im totally glad I found this step by step guide. It was terrific and was able just to get the knob from a Honda retail shop for $17. Money saved, therefore you get a thumbs up!!! Subscribed!!!

Extremely helpful video! Didn’t know it could be so easy to install this on my own; I’ve been driving around for a couple of months buttonless and had been putting this until the plastic pieces inside absolutely crumbled on me. Bought a button on Amazon for $7 and took me about 15 min to fix. Working good as new now after installing!

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME AND I THOUGHT I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR!! Not only did you show me that i can still pop my thumb in there and shift gears, but i am confident enough that I or my husband can do this repair after seeing this video that we've decided to do it ourselves. You saved us a tow bill and the dealership costs!! Thank you thank you thank you I am so relieved.

I have a 2005 and those things are notorious for disintegrating. I felt the same way you did, but thank god I peered into that hole left behind and saw the rod to depress. I got good at using my thumb to change gears- I called it my anti-theft device!

Thank you APDTY... I bought this part from a Honda dealership this morning for $12.32 after tax, and they were gonna charge me $160 + tax labor to install it.
I fixed the knob in 5 mins after watching your video. Simple and easy to follow...

THANK YOU! This was so easy to do. I was in a parking lot when my button disintegrated, and I thought I was going to have to have my car towed to the shop. Then I realized I had the WWW at my fingertips. That's when I found your video. From there, I figured out how to shift the gears so I could drive, and I drove right to the Honda dealership. You saved me a tow bill and a repair bill. Thanks again.

I'll certainly add my thanks for the help this video offered. I must say, however, it was MUCH more difficult getting the shaft to release from the knob than in the video (approx 1:55 - 2:07). Also, the knob cover that allows access to the button assembly was a good bit harder to remove than in the video. In fact, on another step-by-step photo display of how to do this repair, it says one should expect to break the plastic tabs that hold each in place when removing both the shaft and the knob cover. None of the shaft tabs broke during my work, and only one of the two knob cover tabs broke, and I was able to put it all back together with nothing noticeable loose. It took me about 15 minutes to carefully remove the shaft, and about 5 minutes to remove the knob cover. I took it slowly due to the warning about tabs easily breaking. Reassembly took about 3 minutes total. Thanks again for the video...it gave me confidence I could do the job!

OMG!!!! This video was a life saver for my son. Our regular Honda mechanic told us by telephone that to replace the button on the shifter would costs $60. But, this video was so detailed and easy to follow, he decided to buy the part at the dealer (only costs $18.00 with tax) and replace it himself. The job only took about 15 minutes and it works beautifully. So, THANK YOU for such a great video.

My brother in law gave my son (his nephew) his old 2004 Honda Accord, the Push button was missing, he was going to get it fixed , a mechanic told him $300 parts & labor. Mechanic didn’t come thru!
He showed us how to operate without button, since it was a FREE car we could get push button fixed ourselves! I ordered this part for $5.18 on Amazon. Watched this video & fixed it myself in like 10-15 mins, taking it off the car, pulling it apart, shaking for any broken pieces, (I didn’t have much broken in there) inserting the spring & knob, & placing back on the car! Thanks Much!

Thank you so much! As a guy, I am ashamed to admit this, but in all candor I am very mechanically inept. However, I saw your video and decided to give this a shot instead of paying an arm and a leg at the dealer. It was as simple as you made it look. The most difficult part was prying off the plastic sleeve on the stem, and the plastic outer covering, where the knob goes. I guess the plastic fused a bit because of the heat it had been subject to over the years. After prying the plastic pieces off with the help of my knife, the rest went without a hitch. You have my gratitude for not only saving me a substantial amount of money, but, more importantly, giving me the satisfaction of being able to fix something on my own.

    • @ETphoneGemini

what kind of knife did you use to pry it? I'm having the hardest time to pull that piece off. I already made a small crack on it when I tried, and I'm afriad that I'll break it. I don't know why it's so stuck on when in the video it was so easy for him... :( any tips? thanks!

I just did this repair to a 2003 Honda Accord LX. It was very very simple to do. The only difference was I had a white plastic thing around the metal stalk that prevented the metal stick from rotating out of alignment. (Made the job even easier.) Thank you for saving me $180!

My gear shifter could not shift to R nor P and would not release the key due to the broken button. Forums were talking about replacing solenoids, adjusting cables, blown fuses and I thought it could be a much bigger issue than just the broken button. But after watching your clip, $14 for parts and 10 minutes, it easily shifts through all the gears and all is well. Thank you soo much!

The interior part of the shifter button disintegrated on my '05 and I thought I was in for a nightmare. Luckily, there is a Honda dealership right down the road and they sold me the piece for 20 bucks.
Between that and your EXCELLENT video, I was off and running in no time. Thanks a million guys.
Key note here, the spring was fine and I suspect it would usually hold up if you were careful with the button removal... oh and as jaybby04 noted below on her 2004, there was also a little white guide piece to make the re-installation easier.

Second time my shifter button has broken. The first time I mindlessly took it to a shop and paid over 100 bucks for it to be fixed and in the process they somehow fucked something up, so my car wasn’t registering that I was pressing the brake pedal so I could shift out of park. Two years later the button broke again and after a quick google search this video was the first to pop up and I’m so thankful it did. Less than $20 on amazon and a few minutes of my time and it’s good as new.

Thank you for this most helpful video! The shifter button disintegrated on our 2005 Honda Accord. I expected this to be a costly repair. However, we ordered the replacement button through Amazon for a few bucks (like, under $15, I think). I followed your video, got the shifter handle removed and the new button installed in under 10 minutes. The automatic gear shift on my 1998 accord fell apart in my hands. Thank goodness for this video. After reviewing the schematics on the Honda site and following this video, I was lucky enough to have all the parts. The similarities allowed me to piece it back together, besides I think it was just a loose screw on the side...THANK YOU!

Thank you for the video. I purchased the part on Amazon using the link that you provided.
Everything went fine except for two things. First, the top half of the gear shift didn't want to separate from the bottom half. I spent about 5 minutes getting them to pull apart (and finally succeeded). My second obstacle was snapping apart the two halves of the knob that housed the old broken chrome push button. I used a flat-head screwdriver to get a little bit of wiggle room because using my bare hands was doing nothing. Once I had a little gap, I then worked my way around the knob using my fingers. The two halves finally separated however I discovered that I must have broken off a small piece of plastic in the process because the two halves of the knob would not snap (lock) back together again. So duct tape to the rescue. Surprisingly one of the easiest things was toward the end when I slid the repaired shifter back on and aligned with the two screw openings. Everything aligned the first time and the car shifts very nicely now.
My only question is: Would it be safest for me to buy a new knob to house the chrome button? Or will the duct tape be fine as a permanent solution? Thanks again!

I'm 22 and just did this myself. It was very difficult for me to remove the siding cover that the button goes in, but it finally popped off and flew across the room LOL!! I also had extra glue from the old piece that I had to scrape out with a toothpick then ran a paper towel with a little bit of Dawn on it to clean the excess glue then I put my button in. Thank you so much for this video! My shifter actually went straight back on; I didn't have an issue with lining it up but my Accord is an 04 (late 03) so not sure if that makes a difference. Basically, it's very simple an even a 22 year old can do it 😁 Again, thanks for the tutorial!

Thank you so much for this video! My 2017 CRV is still under warranty, so the dealer will fix the broken button on Monday. Of course, today being Saturday, this was a big problem until I found this information that showed me how to manually move the shifter. Thanks again!

I was stuck at the store
Now I didn’t get to fix it but I had
Been there for 45 minutes couldn’t get my car in reverse or park
I saw this and was able to take off the gear shifter piece and push the button
Now just need to order the parts :)
    Thanks!

This video was really helpful. Saved me a lot of money. Also, if the white part falls off during disassembly, it would make things easier when putting the shifter back in place.

you can either turn the key on (engine off of course) or use the shifter release button to release the shifter assembly, the shifter release button is that little square hole to the left of the handle when it's in the park position.

Thank You. Great Video, helped me a lot. I did not order a new spring so I'm thankful I did not loose or throw away my old one. My 2003 Accord had a plastic housing piece which helped keep the metal angle component aligned on the shifter while I slid the handle on. Made it quite a bit easier. No fighting trying to line it up.
