This is what a dark knight is supposed to be, tired of all bs in the world and wants to destroy everything just to get maybe a fake chance to start anew.
Eh, I prefer FFXIV's interpretation of a Dark Knight myself. An unsung Hero willing to do whatever is needed to do what's right, even if it puts him against the "justice" of the world. If what is needed to set the world to rights is an outlaw, then an outlaw is what the world shall have. In this I feel Clive is more fitting a Dark Knight.
I thought it was neat at first knowing the voice actor for barnabas was the same as Malos from xenoblade 2, but when in his armour and with his sword out he looks so similar outside of the differing art styles it’s insane how alike they are, even funnier when you consider both wield the dark element and have powers that can pierce defenses, barnabas’s sword can cut through anything, Malos and his power can annihilate anything it touches, I don’t know if the xenoblade fan in me is skewing my perception but I see a surprising amount of similarities between this game and those ones, doesn’t help that so many voice actors from them show up here in major roles.
Honestly this felt like an Odin theme to me at first. Then the vocals kicked in and turned it into Twilight of the God Shattering Star and now I’m questioning how Soken would do Fire Emblem music. Ah what am I saying, of course he’d be the best one!
Thematically, Barnabas is an incredible King. You rarely see Kings as servants of God in literature, but he is a true to term 'King' that does his mandated duty.
@xion0713 On a historical standpoint, a King's first duty is to God. His constituents come second. They're supposed to serve the Lord in their capacity as leader, hence why it was so easy to justify insane religious crusades or executions back then as monarch...because it was considered your duty to, and if God required you and your constituents to sacrifice your lives on the field of battle, then you had to. And it's also why the Pope had so much power eventually, because the authority to excommunicate even a king was scary enough to cow many an ambitious monarch...and why Henry VIII breaking faith with Rome to become head of the Church of England was a huge deal.
Honestly, a fight with skill, not Eikon vs Eikon is astounding. This was the perfect test of skill. The music on top of it was literally PERFECT. This was to see who the best was. Clive was bested by Barnabas TWICE, and this fight right here, was his redemption. No gimmicks, no tricks, just a duel between bitter rivals. Easily my favorite fight in this entire game, and easily the fight that proved to be the most challenging for me, and I’m all for it.
I felt the same, had only 1 high potion left by the end of the fight and that's with the max capacity and potency of the potions. I'm really excited to start NG+ on Final Fantasy mode and get to this fight again. Also yeah, Shiva's abilities are great, i wasn't really feeling them in the beginning but now her circle ability at the very least is a must in my build ❄
Very fun fight to play without healing items or armor! That's how I've been playing the game to add some challenges to the game and this fight was by far the hardest!
Most beautiful fight and Ost in the game. It shows you fear, desperation, anger, and malice all in one villian. I may have had an issue because this game deviated alot from FF normal battle systems. However, this IS Final Fantasy! Facing your demons and overcoming your limits to defeat the villian. Soken just knocks it out of the park with Odins theme. 10/10
Honestly the more I think about it, I think it’s implied that he stops caring about keeping Clive alive for Ultima because he finally met his match and it satiated that selfish want of his
"My heart! It soars! As it did the day I won Ash!" So epic. I kind of love this character tbh. Most epic Odin ever. The idea that Barnabas as a youth won an entire Kingdom through sword skill alone, is incredibly badass.
His character was definitely executed perfectly. It’s a little eerie though that his true age is unknown. In little excerpts here and there it’s mentioned he came into power over 40 years ago, but doesn’t look much older than 40. Another lore entry states scholars believe Odin’s dominants descend from Barnabas’ bloodline, but this can’t be proven since there’s no record of an Odin dominant prior to Barnabas. And he himself mentioned to Clive it has been generations since he’s had a worthy challenge. So like, just how old is Barnabas and does being the dominant of Odin keep him somewhat immortal? 😅
@@martygenethe history of ash is steeped in mystery and I definitely interpreted that he was king for centuries, essentially destroying every opponent since then. I interpreted that somehow being loyal to ultima made him immortal. It’s possible that it’s also an effect of the Odin power, as it’s implied every eikon has different « hidden powers » such as ramuh being able to know the mystery of the world.
@@martygeneVivian implies he had just entered adulthood when he conquered Ash and he has been keeping the throne for the 40 following years, which makes him around 60. The point of him being so young is that he turned into an Akashic to serve Ultima and has essentially stopped aging ever since.
@@dinorex3464 Barnabas came from the southern continent. He is not originally from Valisthea and neither is Cid. I wonder where Cid hails from as well. Many mysteries in this game.
@@dinorex3464 it is impossible that his immortality is due to the fact that he serves Ultima because he has only been under his control for 5 years before the fight with Clive and then the codex does not specify the reason for his immortality so this thing that it was Ultima who gave it to him it's just a guess. As for what Vivian says, she only reports what history says and I doubt that the books say that Barnabas is immortal so most likely the fact that he was 20 years old at the time of the conquest was invented to justify the fact that was very young even after so many years. Remember the codex doesn't lie while an NPC could be wrong. Then the fact that he lived for centuries would justify his careless behavior towards everyone and that he went "crazy" as soon as Ultima showed him his mother who knows how many years he hadn't seen.
I realized Barnabas and Zant (Zelda: TP). 6 are oddly similar are very similar: (both servants to their god, both absolutely wreck house in an imposing manner, and both lose their shit for the final showdown. Dont think we will see another antagonist so dominating and menacing as Barnabas/Odin anytime soon in this series. Closest thing we had to this was Beatrix in 9 in absolutely schooling us but Barnabas, I dare say, may even make Sephiroth look weak. The man casually split the sea like he is Moses.
A psychotic villain worthy of the battle, it's funny how Barnabas was also a bit of a tribute to the faceless helmet-wearing classic Final Fantasy Villains.
@@alpsi285 Actually, I meant Villain-Specific Tribute. Similar to Garland, Golbez, and Exdeath. Barnabas just gives off the same vibe as them when he's in full armor.
05:00 Imagine if that would have sliced the tower in half, leaving you with only half the original surface area to do phase 3. Funnily enough at moments when it actually matters, his sword forgets it can cut literally anything.

@@TheAdventGamer Let's not kid ourselves: Clive's main job is Mime, with Blue Mage and Warrior being his secondaries.
@@SkijaramazI think he means from a perspective point of view. But yeah your right, it's kinda neat when you put it that way.
@@Full_of_Tarkus I know, I was being silly. XD
@@Skijaramazsilly or not I think you hit the nail on the head 😂 the first mime/blue mage main character in a mainline FF
Okay so I am NOT the only person who heard God Shattering Star during the Opera section then
@@JonahSimm I’m pretty sure it’s the same person, but I could be wrong. Still, amazing regardless
...and now all I can think of his I would love a FFXIV / Fire Emblem crossover...
@@TheTriforceDragon Truly this was Soken’s master plan
i actually heard the song " lord of a dead empire" from fire emblem echoes@@JonahSimm
Love the theme, it's heroic but also villian esque. Kind of like Batman but with more medieval flair
Yes, it's a villain commissioning a heroic theme for themselves.. while completely missing the entire point of heroism.
Barnabas is the Dark Knight after all..
Yep and it all feels so majestic & godly too. Very good theme for Odin.
Thematically, Barnabas is an incredible King. You rarely see Kings as servants of God in literature, but he is a true to term 'King' that does his mandated duty.
A Kings mandated duty is to his country a duty which he unequivocally failed
@@TheUndyingCrystalcouldn't have said it better myself
Yup, the world building of 16 is so cool, it's a shame we probably won't get more content on the same world outside of DLC.
1.) This track (named "The Riddle") is one of my favorite tracks in the whole game.
2.) That Dancing Steel at 2:11 was incredibly ballsy.
This was the hardest fight in the game for me. The defense and parries. Geez. Thank god for Jill. Permafrost FTW!
@@IRurushu 999999%
Seriously it was harder than that level 50 dragon from the hunt ?
@TacoWarrior1337 I used that alot when I got both it’s on my channel
Very fun fight to play without healing items or armor! That's how I've been playing the game to add some challenges to the game and this fight was by far the hardest!
Most beautiful fight and Ost in the game. It shows you fear, desperation, anger, and malice all in one villian. I may have had an issue because this game deviated alot from FF normal battle systems. However, this IS Final Fantasy! Facing your demons and overcoming your limits to defeat the villian. Soken just knocks it out of the park with Odins theme. 10/10
I don't need Ifrit, *to kill you Barnabas!*
Honestly the more I think about it, I think it’s implied that he stops caring about keeping Clive alive for Ultima because he finally met his match and it satiated that selfish want of his
This goes dubiously hard
1:19 is among the greatest things i've ever heard
Same
The lyrics to the vocals of the song:
The twain
On ten feet run
Three eyes and one
Trained upon victory
Foreseen
With steel, darkness comes
I feel like this comment should be pinned. 🤔
"My heart! It soars! As it did the day I won Ash!"
So epic.
Albeit Barnabas is just having fun and Zant actually went insane but I love this kind of boss fight man…
This song in particular makes me think of some Final Fantasy Tactics music and I absolutely love it!
so i wasnt the only one that made the connection!
I felt the same way! CBU3 really does love Ivalice, and it shows.
Any one in particular?
Barnabas would totally be a tactics villain. I swear most of them acted like him
Yup the slow intro to this track which isn't included and is in the scene they meet him at the bottom of the sea reminded me of Duke Bardobas manor from the intro of Vagrant Story, same composer as FFT
I got my ass kicked the first time I did this phase of the fight and I didn't even care.
Most underrated boss battle in the game.
If anyone wants some cool trivia. The gentleman who sings @2:14 is Takashi Baba, who also sang 'God Shattering Star' in Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Anyone want to talk about how cool at 3:47 Barnabas’ move there makes it look like he dodged Clive’s attack and retaliated
Now the pc gamers can enjoy this masterpiece
David Menkin delivers the role of Crazy Insane Yelling Villain once again.
Gave Zenos vibes with the hunt/worthy opponent comments.
THIS
he was really enjoying his time fighting us
I can hear his maniacal laughter...
I just live this one! When Barnabas went insane with the rapturous joy of having a worthy opponent made me really like him.
this track goes hard. Easily one of my favorite villains in gaming
You Reverse Zantetsuken'd Odin. A+ for style.
Honestly i can't choose which track is best. It's either this or ascension for me ... but all of them are so good it feels like it condensed all the previous FF into one, such a genius is Soken. Now just patiently wait for the ultimate edition OST to arrive so i can enjoy them in lossless
Posting this before the 2023 VGAs. Masayoshi Soken will win best score and music.
My man never lost faith in Soken, it did win 🎉
This theme is absolutely epic. I love ff xvi forever
this track sounds like a much more chaotic version of the Odin theme in FFXI, I think that's super cool
I wondered why he seemed so disinterested in everything and everyone early in the story, but after this fight it makes so much sense. Every puzzle piece clicked into place and he is now one of my favorite characters xD
Im glad that this fight was not a eikon battle cause Odin is known of is sword that can cut anything peak.
wait doesn't ifrit dodge in every eikon battle so why it matter sword that can cut anything when you can just dodge i pretty sure ifrit doesn't parry so what it make it differents
@@aboodsaad8790if Odin does hit it’ll hurt lol
I totally love this crazy alien god worshipping king, such a cool theme for him, but when he finally let loose and started laughing and asking if Clvie is... TIRED?!? I laughed with him, I knew it was going to be a badass duel of the fates!

This feels like a classic final fantasy/chrono trigger ost
What a badass theme for a man who believed he had no choice but to bend the knee to an unloving god
A psychotic villain worthy of the battle, it's funny how Barnabas was also a bit of a tribute to the faceless helmet-wearing classic Final Fantasy Villains.
Are you sure it's a tribute? LMAO that's like saying anyone with a helmet is a tribute to older helmet villains. Sounds like a reach
@@alpsi285 Actually, I meant Villain-Specific Tribute. Similar to Garland, Golbez, and Exdeath. Barnabas just gives off the same vibe as them when he's in full armor.
@@ianmanning4368 oh definitely he has that badass vision of them and a mix of FF13-2 Cauis just a tiny bit of that love for fighting
05:00 Imagine if that would have sliced the tower in half, leaving you with only half the original surface area to do phase 3.
Funnily enough at moments when it actually matters, his sword forgets it can cut literally anything.
The most fun human-sized fight in the game!
It is interesting that in the majority of tracks we hear several singers, yet in Barnabas theme there is only one.
Probably the hint that he is the only one who supports ultima and the only one left from his kingdom
Final fantasy is back baby!!
Barnabas is so badass man!
I need an edit of this ost with the bit at 1:06 extended at least twice as long, that part is godlike
"You are NOT my equal and your will is FORFEIT!!"
Bahamut may be the strongest Eikon but Barnabus surely master his Eikonic ability. He's the only one can goes prime but remain in human form.
Also the only one who defeated Clive in ifrit's form alone
If you love Final Fantasy and the combat this game offers, then this fight is a heaven-sent gift. Probably my favorite fight in term of execution. By this time, the game knows you should be hard to how things work 😌
My heart, it sooooaaars.
As it did the day I won Ashhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
"I... I... Ah... The Rapture! I am yours Mythos! Claim me as your prize" *insane laugh*
Clive: So, are we gonna have an Eikon vs Eikon fight?
Barnabas: Ha ha ha... no. I'm going to to test your skills as a gamer by fighting in human form like a proper Rival Boss fight. Prepare yourself!
What made this fight for me was when he started laughing like a maniac.
I kinda think of Barnabas as Clive's Jetstream Sam. Someone to challenge and prepare Clive for the fight that would change the world and everyone in it.

Thanks GOD final fantasy music never disappoints me!! The part that i most love and noticed while going against him despite the intensity of the fight was 00:56 - 01:19
That part is absolutely amazing.
I'll forever remember my first fight against him because that part synched with Barnabas laughing like a psychopath while doing that spinning attack and I got goosebumps.
David Menkin went *hard* on this role.
Y’know this guys the real deal when not only does he have the dominant Odin but he also has Vergil’s Move set too
That enough power to get a man motivated
the moment Barnabas became an interesting character and stopped being the generic crazy crusader
At first I felt A little underwhelmed but now I have a much better appreciation of this theme
It sound like a dance of madman... and the whole fight in a sense is a dance of two warriors.

Battle scenes reminiscent of DMC Virgil. The most common boss battle in this game compared to the previous Bahamut or Titan
This reminds me so much of Odin’s theme from 14
There is some part of it I think. Like they did with Titan and Garuda
If I could have a nickel for every consecutive best action game of the year having you fight Odin, I’d get 2 nickels, which isn’t much but it’s strange it happened twice.
Inb4 Elden Ring
Which is action-adventure not mainly action-focused as it had way more emphasis placed on exploration, and the most action is coming from the bosses, not really player who cah even be utilizing passives actions like Ashes to dwindle down bosses.
Wow the amazing part starts from 1:18

"MIUTHOS!"
Call me crazy if you will but don't the vocals at 2:13 sound almost exactly the same as FE3H's God Shattering Star? Maybe it's the same singer?
ua-cam.com/video/0WMYL6HuUoI/v-deo.html
Edit: I did some research and found out God-Shattering star was sung by Takashi Baba, who was also featured in the credits of many FF numbered titles since X. There's a good chance he was also in XVI!
I looked this up a few days ago, thinking the same thing. Takashi Baba's name also appears in the credits for XVI as one of three tenors, so it's almost certain this is him!
