    I had a signet ring for my 21st. With my initials, wore it all the time for a decade. Tend to only wear it for special occasions now, but you have inspired me to wear it more. I would get one to commemorate a special occasion, your 30th or as an engagement present, or something similar.

    I can understand your mixed feelings on the signet ring. As a…let’s say “more distinguished gentleman” (I’m 56), I now wear a one, but not a family crest, rather my company logo, given as a recognition for 20 years of service to the company. I wear it with pride and a feeling of accomplishment for many years of hard work. I also admire you wearing your grandfather’s watch. I have my grandfather’s presentation watch, of which he was very proud and wore every day, up to and including the day he died. I have more expensive watches, but none more valuable to me. I say as long as a signet ring is meaningful to you in some way, it is neither ostentatious nor ever inappropriate. Wear it with pride.

    Very well made video. Cervantes said in Don Quixote when he was counseling Sancho Panza: "Don't worry if you came from labor workers, since a name is something you earn, not something you born with. Just work for a name and earn it. Then you'll become a real noble".
    So I agree with your way of 🤔 thinking, and again, excellent work with your video.

    Hey there, as a heraldry nerd, I'd like to clarify something, not for the sake of being a silly internet pedant but so you guys know that you have more signet options than you may already know.
    A crest (the bit that goes above the helmet) and arms (the bit displayed on the shield) are different. Some signets feature the crest alone (00:29 or 1:18), some the arms alone (1:03), some both (1:29).
    Some also use a badge (see King Charles' ring featuring the ostrich feather badge @ 00:51). Badges are a symbol that's not part of one's coat of arms and could historically be adopted and discarded at will.
    All three are considered fair game/good form for a signet heraldically speaking so if you're having something made it's something to consider - you have some options (badge, crest, arms, arms + crest). It's good to know and understand all your options so you can make a choice that best suits you. Thank you for posting so many examples so they can all be seen in the video.
    The only thing I'd urge against is bucket shop heraldry - essentially using someone else's arms because you have the same last name. This is considered poor form.
    PS: If you'd like to learn more about heraldry, the Heraldry Society's beginner's guide (link below) is a great place to start. There's a really active subreddit for it as well.

    Nice video! In my opinion, if you already have a family crest and take pride in it, consider getting a ring-age doesn't matter. If you're proud of your family and contribute to its well-being, I believe you deserve a signet ring with the family crest.
    I currently have a signet ring with a stone inlay for my middle finger. However, I plan to have a signet ring made with a family crest after I get married. For me, this represents the status of being a husband and taking care of the family. I think everyone deserves a family crest signet ring when they assume the responsibility of caring for their family.

  • @brynmormeredith6270
    @brynmormeredith6270 2 місяці тому +1

    It's the plain gold oval or cushion signet ring worn on the smallest finger of the left hand that is associated with British gentry, old money, and elitist circles. So, to avoid this association, you could wear a stone-set signet on the smallest finger of your left hand (or your right hand, even, to further disassociate from that aristocratic image). Don't get a ring for your pinky with a disproportionately large face, though; it will look absurd, garish, and mafioso-esque (the other stereotype you mentioned). Fairly dainty, simple and elegant is best; and perhaps set in silver rather than gold.
    However, if you really like the idea of a gold signet ring with an engraved face but don't want to be associated with (or be seen to be mimicking) the British upper classes, simply wear the signet on a non-traditional finger, such as the third finger of either hand, or even the middle or index finger.
    Ultimately, though, you should go for what you want to wear, without overthinking or fearing what other people perceive. Life is too short to worry about such things, and if you have the disposable income to purchase one, go for it! The meanings and symbolism behind signet rings are not the sole possession of the landed gentry, anyway. They are there to be used by anyone who values a sense of belonging, kinship, and pride in their family roots and origins.

    Family crests don’t really exist, at least not as most people believe where everyone with the surname has the right to the design. Rather, coats of arms were awarded to individuals who then passed those down through their families, usually from father to eldest son.
    For anyone reading this, please do not fall victim to purchasing a ring with a crest that does not rightfully belong to you. It’s better to choose initials, or to create your own design. Yes, the websites will allow you to search “your” family crest. This is a faux pas, and worse yet, one done to earn a quick buck off those who do not know better.

    I’m almost 47 and what I would say is this: the real definition of a man and the pinnacle of success is not giving a flying f*%k about what people think of you when you’re wearing something. If you like the look of the signet ring as a man then by all means wear it no matter what age you are. That’s easy to say though because I’m at the point in my life where I’m very comfortable about who I am. And that’s probably the sexiest thing of all for a man. So wear a signet ring because you like it not because you think you should or not based upon society. And really that philosophy could apply to anything.

  • @travis79109
    @travis79109 11 місяців тому +4

    People think that just because there is a crest associated with their last name that means it applies to all people who share that surname. It doesn’t. Most often it only applies to the person it was originally issued to and sometimes their direct descendants. In essence you’re usually wearing something that belongs to another family.
    That said, great video and you’re putting out great content.

    Do I wear one? Yes. Why? Because I’ve always been interested heraldry and though I don’t come from any kind of aristocracy/nobility since I live in the United States, I still believe having a symbol or “crest“ is important to give your family distinction and a sense of pride in your family. I designed the crest for my family similar to how it’s done in the old world - parts from the family of each person who’s getting married and creating a union, therefore having a crest representing both sides. Since I have daughters, I won’t necessarily have anyone to pass my ring down to because typically it would be melted down anyway as in the old ways, the son wouldn’t have the exact ring as the father anyway but would have the family crest with a certain distinction to set them apart since they are not one of the parents, but will show elements as part of the family. I use my ring to seal cards/notes to family members because I like the aesthetic and something showing where it came from that’s unique. I am not what I would consider “Rich“ but I have achieved and still achieving levels of success I feel give reason to have a signal ring as well as it being sort of “signature” around with me at all times. Though people live in the United States, don’t need to have this kind of things, I believe in a lot of the old ways, and I believe in embracing them and using them in a modern way to show the value/importance of the old ways and caring them into the future.

    It seems there’s been a bit of a modern update on the tradition of a signet ring. A signet ring is gifted by a family elder in recognition of your personal/professional success. A family
    coat of arms does not reflect this in any way since your ancestry is not an individual achievement. So unless you’ve inherited a ring with your family coat of arms upon the passing of a dear one or some other special circumstance, ordering one of your own for yourself is generally not done.

    Signet rings should only be worn by aristocrats. To be born as one is no achievement and not to be born as one is no shame, but you should not pretend to be one.

    Such a rubbish, what you are saying here. Signet ring for the older generation only. ? Nonsense. In noble families it is - and it has always been - customary to get one when you come of age. Usually when you are 20. Of course if you do not come from a historic family, do NOTwear one no matter how old you are.
