Start Your Own Legacy - The Signet Ring Guide, Meaning, Favourite Recommended Styles & Brief History

- In today's video I revisit a subject I covered in the very early days of the channel a year ago. As I recently had a number of my signet rings resized, I thought why not share them, discuss their meaning, significance and give a brief history about them on the channel.
A signet ring for me, is a very important refinement that I feel is the second most important accessory a gentleman should own, after a wristwatch of course! Today I show the four types of signet rings I own and demonstrate how you can find the best choice for yourself.
The great thing is, there is a style for everyone! So why not have one made to enjoy , express your personality, remember a heritage or start a new one to be remembered by for future generations!
To have your own monogramed signet ring made in the traditional Oxford style I highly recommend the following...

To buy, sell, repair and have rings custom made I recommend...

I subscribed for the watch videos and never intended to find so many unique videos from your channel that were on a variety of different topics! Keep up the great work Guvnor!
+Robert Damm Thank you Robert!
Highly appreciated. All the best for the new year my friend
Best regards,
TGV
Hi guys, for signet rings please take a look also to my channel :)
Celebrating my days off with some of my favourite videos of TGV : EDC's, life-hacks for a positive lifestyle, christmas specials & signet ring videos! Fantastic.
See you in the new year!
What powerful symbolism your family crest has. It's so beautiful to see people embrace their culture and heritage in a way that would make their ancestors proud. Congrats on the 20K and I have been telling friends about the channel. God bless.
Wow! Your ring is on the front page of their website. Pure class.
Looking at pictures in books on the internet...
*hearty chuckle*

Great video, really love the broad range of content you are covering. Keep up the great work!
Amazing video Tristano. One of your best to date. I had researched mine before, but could never find the history or indeed a crest or any info about it. Any tips on good places to search would be very helpful. Have an amazing New Year.
Best Regards, Dave.
Had a signet ring made recently, from sterling silver using my personal monogram. Great video! Love watching stuff like this.
Wonderful video, TGV. I love the watch videos, but it is very nice to study other gentlemanly topics as well, and also learn a bit more about you as well. Thanks for your time in making such great content!
"Pure class" as always TGV.
Cheers, W.
That's why we love the urban gentry so many different informative vids for a variety of different topics love tgv, keep up the good work, all the best Ryan.
Another fantastic video. I am now intrigued to find out about my own family history. Keep up the good work.
I don't have any signet ring in my family, but my Grandfather was a pretty famous jeweler in Naples, Italy. So, today I have some of his creations that come directly from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They are unique rings (and other jewels) completely hand made and the most beautiful one is a lion's head that comes out from the front of the ring, it's like a real sculpture from gold. It's not a signet ring but it's still a unique and distinctive way to define yourself, even because that's the only existing ring made in that way. Should I put something this special on my finger, TGV?
As always, great great video!
Thank you for sharing these fantastic rings.
Take care my friend,
Best regards,
Michele from Italy.
I know you commented this 5 years ago, but how are you?
@@RJ-iu4lj I was just considering commenting here as it's been so long..lol..ahh well
Michele ..Did You start wearing the Ring?.. It sounds beautiful.. And with the History & Family Connection..the answer to Your question in My opinion..YES!..something THAT special..That was Designed & Made by Your Grandfather Deserves to be worn!..(just not as a daily wear ring..to preserve its beauty)
Suggs from Madness has been sporting a signet ring since '79.....'nuff said!
Nice job explaining it all, keep up the good work.
Congrats on hitting the 20+ Subs too, very well deserved.
I recently had a pinky signet ring made by the same company as yourself using a monogram of my initials with some beautiful filagree surrounding them and my DOB in Roman numerals on the inside shank to celebrate my Fortieth and am in love, the quality of engraving fascinates me, it's a little masterpiece.
Really interesting and informative TGV, thank you. I love the language involved in heraldry as well, our crest is "a lion rampant or, in the dexter paw a tulip gules slipped vert" !
I just bought my 1st rose gold ring.. thank you Tristano for the excellent guidance!
Hi TGV, I tought I would share with the viewers what my borthers and I did.My mother wanted to melt my late father's wedding ring down and get it made into a ring for each of us 3 brothers. I thought this was a great idea and wanted to take it a step further. On the first ring (oldest brother) the first letter from my father name was engraved on the front and his date of birth on the inside. So it was N, and 25/05/xxOn the second ring (middle brother), my father's middle name initial was engraved and his date of marriage. So A, and 12/12/xx.On my ring (youngest) is the initial of our surname and his date of passing. So H, and 07/10/XX.These three rings create a set: NAH, 25/05/xx - 12/12/xx - 07/10/xx...and are a great tribute to our father. I hope this gives some viewers another way to start a legacy ring.
Max T lolololol
Max T no he clearly wrote that his mother wanted to make a ring for each son
I actually, I think it is a terrible idea. One of you should have kept it exactly as you father had it. The other two brothers should have got something else from your father.
I think that was a great idea
@CrookedNose2131, What a lovely tribute! Thank you so much for sharing this with us viewers!
I've always been interested in jewellery so I found this video very entertaining TGV, many thanks. Also hearty congrats on reaching 20k+ subscribers, onwards and upwards my friend :-)
Outstanding historical and educational value deeply rooted in richness! Top of the day to you!

Informative video answering a couple questions I had, cheers.
Hey T, I just got the exact same Navitimer as yours, and I match it with a camo nato strap. So happy! You inspired me to go for a bigger watch, thank you.
I will go broke watching your videos lol. I ordered the Sinn 104 in the last two weeks and I absolutely love it! Now I am researching my family crest with the intention of ordering a ring. What's next haha
Sinn U50 for Christmas from myself 😁
Very interesting! I did some checking; the ring which has been passed down through the generations in our family has three oval shaped stones. Two rubies and a "blood stone" in the middle. It is set in 18kt yellow gold. To me, a bit imposing in appearance. I will have to do some more research. Your video has sparked my need to know! Great piece; as always TGV!
I made a sterling silver ring with lost wax casting method, with my mother's initials. I made it at age 13, for my middle finger at that time. I saw your video, went and found the ring, and 15 years later, it slid onto my right pinky perfectly.
Great recommendation, TGV! I'm looking for a replacement of my old Irish silver ring for quite a while now... ;)
Best regards,
Claus
Very nicely designed ring, quite beautiful . I have a large, heavy gold signet, with serif initial (raised). Worn daily for over 40 yrs.
Fantastic history lesson. Thank you Governor for this insightful peek at these cornerstones of lineage.
Thank you Ruben, very kind.
Best regards,
TGV
As a son of the British Commonwealth, I very much enjoyed your videos and the heritage of British empire.
I've got all the rings my Grandfather left for me (RIP). I am his only Grand Sun. Guyanese, but he did spend time in England, so a lot of the pieces I own are Guyanese or UK inspired pieces. Onyx, Garnet & others. I had a few of his Masonic rings as well. I've put those into safe keeping.
I actually picked up a Tigers eye signet ring today. That's what made me come looking for signet videos. Appreciate your content Urban Gent
Brilliant video. Also a very nice explanation of the signet et ring.
I definitely had to sub to a fellow jewelry brother! You got a fantastic jewelry collection (watches and rings) A lot of the times i feel as i am one of the few jewelry accounts on youtube.. Im a very big jewelry guy. On my account i got a “jewelry” playlist of my personal collection with over 100 videos or just jewelry. I love videos like these!!
That's interesting!!! Thanks for the informations, very well done!
Many thanks for this further info. I have been wearing a pinky ring for years with my coat of arms, and have passed on the tradition to my son.
Tristano congratz on 20k subs! I think its a proper time to treat yourself with a gentlemanly keeper watch.
Thank you for the information.
Nice one TGV, and congrats for reaching 20k viewers!!
+João Vitor Amaral Silva Thank you Joao!

A very interesting video. Although I've never owned a Signet ring I usually wear a plain silver ring on my right hand to counter balance the watch.
Congratulations on 20,000 subscribers!
Great info, even after these 7 years. Thanks.
Love from India. Keep up the excellent work!
Catching up on your vids my friend, this one is truly a gem! (pun intended!) Thank you for so much information, resources and inspiration. Happy 2016!
+itsleo Thank you so much Leo, always happy to hear from you.
Have a great 2016!

I am in the process of making my own signet ring w/ Alexandrite. I got the stone already cut & it's not lab created so it was very expensive. Alexandrite is one of the most expensive stones out there plus it's my daughter's birthstone along with w/ mine. It is going to be set in 14K white gold w/ a nautical star surrounding the stone. I'm very excited to get this ring so I can pass it down when It's my time to go. Thank you for your positive videos & education.
Very good video. Recently I have embarked on discovering my own genealogy. I was amazed to find that I am a direct descendant from the house of Plantagenet. I was more amazed that most all of my family knew and just elected never to bring it up. I intend to have an Oxford style signet ring made to reflect these findings. If at the very least to own as a remembrance.
Thank you, Best regards, TGV
Thanks for the info, for some strange reason I find my self regularly watching your videos, anyway keep it up old chum
+lee stephenson Thank you Lee!

Excellent video, very intelligently articulated and interesting 👍
Great video mate very interesting i think im gonna go for one i dont have much jewellery just a nice bracelet, i had a lovely ring but when my nan passed away in june i put it on her finger so she could be buried with it just wanted her to have something of mine but i think now would be a good time to maybe look for another one i will definitely be checking them out i love your grandfathers ring the one with the red stone is STUNNING and your ring with the black sapphire look very cool, wear them well my friend.

ps congrats on hitting 20.000 subs so very well deserved.
Been watching your videos for years on watches and yet here we are on rings. Thank you for your tastes and sharing knowledge especially without making it feel douchie lol 😂
Hello,
I don´t know why, cause I have never been into watches and collecting them as well, you know am one of that anti-materialism guys, but I really like your channel, I really enjoy it and catching me looking forward to the next video. I do really feel need to have some timepiece on my wrist. Thanks for good work and keep it up. Sorry for my English.
Best regards,
Thomas
Had mine recently done by Dexter. Incredible quality. Thinking of getting a wedding band to wear with it too (on the pinky).
Great video TGV, such a classes piece of jewellery for a gentleman (or lady) to wear.
Also what is the face size of ur TGV ring?
Thanks
Very good video friend enjoyed the information on family crests and arms
Good post, sir.
I bought a class ring after completing University and it was in a drawer for years. It's only after 15 years that I have taken it out and worn it with pride of my accomplishment and my alma mater. It is an Oxford style and fits well on my right ring finger, opposite my wedding ring. However am considering getting a smaller classier signet that symbolizes both family and education made for my pinky to be worn on the left pinky (in honour of tradition).
12:59 “T.G.V.-S.U.C.“ 😉
Btw the black sapphire looks like an eye looking around. Amazing!
I'm glad you mentioned your wedding ring. I've always wanted to ask you about it. Can you give any details on it. The style, metal, size, where you got it. Thanks DH
Hi TGV - great video. A family member purchased my gold signet ring for my 40th birthday. It contains blue lapis lazuli and in terms of memories reflected my time spent in Afghanistan just before that.
+Senecal LOVE Lapis Lazuli, the stone for royalty, used since the time of the pharaohs!!! Perfect to remember your time in Afghanistan and bring luck. Be proud my friend. Hope you are well, Happy new year!
Best regards,
TGV
+The Urban Gentry many happy returns. Good luck with the Channel in 2016.
Absolutely amazing one! My sweetheart had just brought this up the other day and like you he comes from aristocracy (but born and brought up in London) but they have no coat of arms or crest as his father is from Sri Lanka and the practise just don't exist over there as its very much a European thing...I even have one because of my Spanish side but he said he really wanted to create one so it can be passed down generations and then I came across your video and told him to watch. Thank you again for a great and informative video! Hope your wife and the little bellisimo are doing well! X
Thank you for the kind well wishes, very interesting story.
Best regards,
TGV
Nice looking rings especially the cab and shield
Dear TGV congrats for the 20k subscribers! You truly deserve the best success, my friend. Your work on the Tube is absolutely remarkable! Great vid and topic! I like the Nato on the Navitimer... take care. Un abbraccio :-)
+Sharp Chronofighter Grazie mille SCF!! Means a great deal to hear that.
Glad you enjoyed the vid. All the best to you and yours for 2016!
Best regards,
TGV
Well done TGV 20k!!!
Subscribed. This is a great info vid. I also will inherit my grandfathers signet ring from my dad. This will go to my eldest boy, but my youngest will inherit my husbands signet and his wedding ring which has a 1crt diamond in a flush mount. I still think I will buy them their own when they turn 18.
Great explanation of the signet ring, I m curious if you would recommend 9ct , 14ct or 18ct for my first signet ring? Or.. should I ask, you happy with your 9ct ring or you rather had it in 14 or 18?
+theurbangentry fantastic video. To be honest rings are not something I wear (apart from my wedding ring!) but I found this video highly interesting as it ran much deeper than the rings themselves.
Honestly i had no idea there were four different styles of signet ring, i guess you do learn something new everyday lol.
20 grand ! congratulations .
Great Video! Very fascinating family history you conveyed. I am interested in these books you have shared with us. My interest particularly on heraldry and it's various meaning. My surname lineage takes me as far as late 16 century Somerset. So far no signs of armorial bearings or other heraldic symbols. Unfortunately, due to the bombing in WW2 many historical documents had been destroyed during the air raids. Nevertheless, the wax seal is classy and still has it's practical use. Thank You for the excellent information!
really good film, my family name has a good coat of arms and can be traced back to a kings son in Ireland in the 4th century, and a castle town named with my surname, it just marvellous to think about it.
Great idea. I'm considering designing one in a 3d program and having it made by shapeways.
I was just researching this. Weather to build from scratch or build from a new blank ring and add some stuff from old jewelry I have.
I know this is an old video but I’ve come across this and love how informational it is. I really want to get a coat of arms signet or crest signet but I will have to do research on my family name. I would probably have to take a DNA test because Cash is either English or Americanized German.
great video 🙏 thx
I'm amazed you didn't match metals (watch and ring). Pun apart, excellent video, I love the quality of your content.
A signet ring isn't something I had considered before. Yet I like the idea of it being an heirloom, much like the secondary reason I've started collecting watches. I particularly like the idea of having a family crest. Hmmm, I'm going to give this some more thought. :)
Hi TGV. I was just wondering what you think about certina and if you own any certina watches? I have ordered the ds action diver in titanium and am looking forward to that. Love your videos, entertaining and informative. Keep up the good work my friend!
Great video.
In 2016 I will probably have one ring made with aquamarine. I just love its light blue color...
Regards from Rio de Janeiro,
R° de Oª Leite
You are great man ser
My legacy consists of my fahter's Tag Heuer spirotechnique, my grandfather's silver plated zippo slim and parker ballpen. Plus the first things I bought with my first wage: Tortoise Ray-Ban wayfarers and my own solid brass Zippo. I also bought a pair of Dr. Martens. All of those items are at least 20 years old now.
Great video, TGV. Where's a good place to start with learning about the symbols and stones for signet rings? I was thinking of having a dragon as the symbol of the crest.
My mother has my great great grandfathers gold signet ring. I believe my grandmother may have some signet rings, I personally think they are a great idea.
Great video man, so helpful. Do you know the face size of your grandfathers ring? It looks perfect, just right. Not to small and not to big.
I’m African American with a Scottish last name and I’m absolutely obsessed with this stuff!
Tristano, could you tell me the name of the book that you show? I mean the ancient rings one,i love history and it looks amazing
I love the navitimer. Got the 41mm on stainless steel. Thinking about stepping up my ring game. Would like a signet and also have a nice loose diamond I'd like to have set.
Not to flog a dead thread, but Dexter rings in the UK also have a fine product. They did my signet ring in sterling silver, the engraving was expertly done, and thier customer service was fantastic. I highly recommend them.
Hey TGV! I was wondering, what do you think about the Grand Seiko Spring Drive series? Especially the snowflake and diver models? The movement is mesmerizing to watch; I like the look of the diver but its only 200m water resistant. Sorry for the unrelated question, I really want to hear your opinion though haha.
Was that the Glycene Combat sub in the hands on? Combined with the combat nato it looked fantastic! Great video. This channel has opened me up to a new world of refinement and elegance. Thank you!
+Matt Lowe Actually it was the Marathon I think.
So glad to hear you find the channel useful.
Thank you Matt, very appreciated to hear.
Best regards,
TGV
Had mine made at deakin and francis. They also offer the manufacture experience
have a great day
Excellent video. Very informative in so many ways and quite refreshing! I love tradition, custom, heritage, and of course religion which is also important to me. 1000's of years of history roots dig deep and gives a foundation and a meaning. Thank you! By the way, I do like German made boots - Hanwag especially - a doubled stitched German made boot is something special. Check them out
The 9k gold looks more rosish on camera. I'm not sure if it's because they add copper or brass to heighten the red in the gold to offset the whiteness from platinum and silver, or if gold just looks more red when combined with whiter metals.
I love the rings though. The Oxford style is sleek and classy. Of your grandfather's I love the traditional one with the stone. I actually inherited a signet ring from my uncle who never married, he had nothing engraved on it and it's way too big for me (he had it made to get over his arthritic fingers when he got sick). But now I know what it is.
Awesome video, very informative :)
Very nice. Looks like high quality carnelian.
Your videos are fantastic. Great job. From Oris watches to signet rings. Looking to get one. Do you like stone top, or solid gold rings? What's better for wax impressions?
Thank you Ryan! Very kind, as for was impressions, I must say I have never used it, maybe I should try it one day!
Best regards,
TGV
Loved this video TGV, unfortunately tho, my family was very working class right up until my father so i have no crest or passed down rings. :(
Same my family has been a hard working family, but we've always maintained that family identity and pride through our crest and signet rings.
a great big like here .
Great video. I am thinking of getting a ring made by Elizabeth Gage. To my knowledge she is from UK. I was debating between yellow and white gold. Can wear either one, since I wear mix metals anyway. Decided to go with white gold. I would love to see this ring to tarnish and turn yellow over the time.
hey I was wondering if you could review the Ultra thin robina watch.
My Great Grandmother's Father was a Russian Duke, so my gold signet ring has the Russian Imperial Romanov dynasty eagle on it to represent our family link to the Tsars. My last imperial court ancestor before the crown fell in 1918 was a portrait painter to Tsar Nicholas II.
Jesse Abel the family coat of arms is given down from the fathers side, so that would only be your crest if it’s from you father’s father’s family
@@johanstevens5824 except that the last Romanovs were decended from the original Romanovs through the female line.
Speaking of NATO straps - for your TGV strap it'd be great if you have it made in both 20mm and 22mm. As for signet rings, thanks! I've never really known much about them other than they were used for sealing wax. That signet ring with your family crest is very cool, a wonderful keepsake. A very interesting video TGV. I also enjoyed your tiny snippet on your wedding ring. Perhaps you can show that briefly in a following video. Happy New Year to you and your family! Ciao, John
+John Price Oh and by the way, in the Kingsman movie that came out (last year?) they mention signet rings. Of course, their rings are super spy rings with enough voltage to deliver a good stun! Cheers, John
