Hi Tom, regarding the black bales, if you're ever leaving them out in the open, just get a white spray can and put a white X on the top of each bale, and then the crows etc will not touch it. Hope that helps

Just got home from our holiday, so have something to sit and watch now. I have to say thank you for stopping to speak to my partner and myself the other day, sorry about bringing the Scottish weather down with us. Managed to get some burgers and milkshake from the farm shop, that banana and maple was 100%

That goes for you too Tom. Stressing over thing's you can't control over change, won't make it happen faster or help any way. But it does & will effect your health in a negative way. Not good.

Some tips for bales from someone who fed their cows just bales. The easiest way my dad found was to first cut the face side of the bale then spike it with the squeeze grab spikes (more on this later). Pick it and and cut the rest of the plastic off. When in the feeding passage find the end of the twine (?) then you can just pull it or walk backwards and it should all unwind off the bale. Now the reason for the squeeze grab, you can then expand and retract it to break up the bale and spread it out. So you start out at the back of the shed and work your way back towards the entrance so you don't drive over it.

Good that those bales came off ok. Cattle are brilliant at sorting out the good from the not so good and yours are clearly up to the task. Good to see your dad back in harness.

Quite amazing how those bales were in relatively good condition, especially when you think how wet its been. Am definitely going to have to drive up from Southampton, to stock up on meat from the farm shop. Glad your dad is doing well, good to see him up and around, he just needs to remember to be careful. 👍

Tom, why not use some of that crushed hardpan and use it to build up some of the soft spots you know you'll have to repeatedly drive? You can roll and soil then seed over it later.

Regarding your field, if you cannot getthe chopper in, there is no point going for sillage if you cannot pick it up. Bales or grasing is the best you can do out of it. Topic of the table anyway.
These bales are not that bad, the young stock are munching on it pretty happily, that´s the most important.

Has it been 4 years since you first baled the golf course field? Good grief time flies. I had already been watching long before that and remember clearly you going into the field and guessing how many bales you would get out of it. I'm glad to hear that Andrew is doing well. I realised recently, that I share both of your names. I always think of Tom as Tom and I never pay attention or use my first name (it is effectively my middle name) and I'm called Andrew by all and sundry. I am actually Thomas Andrew so I have both your names. Big whoopie dos and all that, but I am amazed how I never thought about it until after years of watching you! Now you all know that I am a dozy so and so. You'd be right.

Tom you use a lot of Telehandlers, here in the US we use a lot more skidsteers, do you prefer the TH ? we feed native grasses and manage them with only native fertilizer, no commercial stuff. No alfalfa either the Bison love it, there is NO FREE FEED, fuel, machinery, taxes, government BS it all adds up
It's probably because in the UK we need something that can do road work and pull trailers. Whereas I suppose in the US you use the skidsteer in the yard and then have a loader tractor or don't travel to far.
TH have a lot better reach and if your running between farms like Tom as there faster and can tow a good sized trailer too if needed
