      20,550 (approximate) weight for the concrete cylinder
      The density of that specofic concrete is a factor... but that's a good approximation.

  • @Sauspreme
    @Sauspreme 22 дні тому +12534

    volume of cylinder is V = πr²h r=2.5415 ft h=6.75 ft
    V= 136.97 ft^3
    Density of concrete ranges quite a lot it seems, but we'll go with 140-150 lb/ft^3 for "normal concrete"
    So probably weighs between 19175lbs - 20546 lbs.

    The 4440 is a quad range transmission. A-B-C-D are the ranges with four forward and two reverse gears in each range. Stop to change between ranges and use the clutch to shift between the 2-3 shift. The 1-2, 3-4 and r1-r2 shifts can be made without clutching. Also when it is hard to start you can turn the wheel back and forth while cranking and it will relieve hydraulic pressure in the pump and make it easier to start.

    It's been 40 years since I did any farm work with tractors but if I remember right, the bushhog takes more maintenance than the tractors. We were using 1930s tricycle front end farm tractors and we were mowing brush on 2nd, 3rd and 4th year sprouts, though.
    The rough terrain and brush was hard on the brushhogs.
    Maybe that airport runway is a lot easier on everything including the tractor, the mower and the operator.

    Also I highly recommend setting that unit up with an auto track system it will make whoever operates the tractor so much easier. Will let you track the tractor straight and set up your spacing so that you never miss any areas of the runway. Personally I’d recommend an ATU 300 and then you would also need a display and receiver the current models are G5 plus universal for the display and starfire 7000 receiver

    The John Deere 4440 was apart of the Iron Horse series of tractors. 144 HP, it was extremely popular (and still is) as it is a beast of a unit! When people say "nothing runs like a deere" this is the tractor they are thinking of. It was made between 1978 and 1982. John Deere made two variants, one with a cab, and one without. The one with a cab is the most popular. The tag should be rivited somewhere on the back near the 3 point. The John Deere 4440 has a 16 speed semi-power shift transmission. 16 gears forward, and 6 gears in reverse. If properly maintained, that tractor will outlast your children. Take care of it, and it will continue to perform.

    • @dougb27
      @dougb27 18 днів тому

      It’s not a powershift. It’s a quad range.

    • @TractorsNStuff
      @TractorsNStuff 18 днів тому +3

      @@dougb27 Yes. The John Deere "Quad Range" transmission found in several of their tractors, including the 4440 is a semi-powershift or "partial" powershift transmission.
      Four gears (1-4) in four ranges (A-D). Power shift between pairs 1-2 and 3-4 in each range, with synchronized shift between 2-3. Two reverses in ranges A-C. Tractor must be stopped, and clutch used, to shift ranges. Power shift is provided by a hydraulically-controlled planetary that provides an overdrive to each gear.
      I don't mean to argue, as we are both right. But yeah, still a great tractor with a great transmission!

    • @kelseykosheluk7507
      @kelseykosheluk7507 20 днів тому +2

      I was just driving a 4440 yesterday. They are 130 PTO HP/112 drawbar hp. My experience driving them is that, like many other tractors, they have lots of low-end torque and probably ~500 ft-lbs peak torque. Low gearing, weight on the drive wheels, and grip let you pull lots of weight like that.
      Cleet should probably driving in the B-range with that rig so he can get a reasonable amount of speed in B2 if he needs, but be able to start off in B1. No need to clutch between 1-2 or 3-4 makes it easy to keep going with that weight between shifts. He needs a second battery and new cables too. They originally came with a couple 6V batteries in series, one under the step on each side, and that gives you enough cranking amps to turn that big engine over properly.
      Those old tractors would also probably feel a lot better/use less fuel revving at 1800 rpm instead of rated engine speed, but I guess that's not why any of us watch Cleet either lol.

    So youve got 4 ranges A,B,Cand D and then park. Then R1-R2, 1-2, N, 3-4. R1 and R2 can be shifted between without clutching. Just move the leaver left and right. 1 and 2 can be shifted between without clutching and 3 and 4 can be shifted between without clutching. We never shifted ranges on the move so pick the one you need and go with it. But once in a range you can clutch and shift from the 1-2 to the 3-4 while on the run. The yellow lever on the left of the steering wheel is your pto. I grew up driving a 4055, 4440, 4640, and a 4750 those are some awesome tractors.

    Former airport maintenance and "Aerodrome reporting officer / Works Safety officer".
    There's a lot of detail in maintaining and owning an airport.
    The FAA should have a manual that lists all of the requirements in design and maintenance.
    You previously mentioned trimming the trees off the ends of the runway to get more usable length, but just as you have requirements for maximum allowed glide slope there are also requirements for obstacle heights off the sides of the runway.
    We had a surveyor do his thing and he noticed a radio antenna was too tall and infringed on the runways airspace.
    This was past a large grass area, past the large apron and at the back of the terminal building next to a large tree.
    It was only JUST over height and we added it to the airport obstacle chart.
    But that side slope was something i had to think about when we had major works happening.
    Things like parking the excavator with its boom layed down low or parked further away from the runway.
    I'd recommend replacing those old runway markers with proper cones. Then you can let the grass grow back around them and it will look so nice.
    I'd also stock up on taxiway and unserviceable cones.
    They will come in very handy when you are ready for a fly in.
    A trick with the cones that you can't or dont want to peg into the ground, fill a sandbag to ¼ full, cut a hole in the top of the cone and thread the sandbag up through it. Tie a big knot so the sandbag sits just above the ground.
    So easy to move about and works on sealed surfaces, of course the cones won't stack afterwards unless you remove the sandbag.
    And the sandbag is still frangible so won't hurt the prop any more than the fibreglass cone will.
    Definitely get some amber beacon lights for all the vehicles that work airside and PLEASE clean that grass off the mower.
    Aside from holsing moisture, its a major fire risk. The bearings and gearboxs can heat up and ignite the grass. It'll take some effort now, but a battery air blower should make easy work of it if you do it right after every time you finish mowing.
    Oh and maybe a longer term project, but look into subsoil and subsurface watering systems.
    Basically leaky pipes that deliver water directly to the roots. A couple of burried moisture sensors could then control them so you always have the best looking grass.

    Keep the RPMs of the JD 2440 at 2100 when cutting the grass to keep the PTO at the required 540 RPMs. That is a must! Additional, stay off the clutch on both tractors, don't rest your foot on it and don't rev the engine that high to get the tractor to move; use a lower gear to get moving or the clutch will not last long otherwise. Check the gear oil in the gearbox on the bush hog too. A lot of those leak and need to be refilled all the time. That is all. :) Mahindra 1526 HST 4WD & Mahindra 6075 PST 4WD in NW Alabama. JD 4440 is great tractor one of the best . Do not forget to clean all that grass off that mower and keep it clean and do not leave that grass piled on it, it will cause it to rust faster, and grease it before every use if fittings do not take grease clean unclog or replace . If you get all fittings working and give it a pump see it move everytime before starting you will not have to worry and bearings will work and last a long time! With them sitting awhile you would benifit from having them all serviced oil change , filters oil ,fuel and hydralics and checked out, then you will know they are ready to go and you can get them on maintance schedule. That will make them start and run better and last longer. Also blow out the air screen and filter after every use, change when needed. If you do not blow them out filters will not last long and will not run as good and could cause issues. If you do not have to do not use either, once addicted they will require it to start . So try not to use it, except when air gets in fueline, filter change or a leak!
    I know I made allot of suggestions you probablly already know but you would be surprized how many people do not do it! If you want them to last forever maintance schedule and other suggestions will be a must!

    That old equipment is in the condition it is due to maintenance...or the lack thereof. The rollers bearings should be greased before or after each use. The steering linkage also, on both tractors. The driveshaft for the mower PTO too. Clean the loose debris off the top of the mower deck after each use. Be a darn shame to have it catch fire. Put some new battery cables on 'em and check the tire pressures. Finally, y'all might consider installing ABC type fire extinguishers within reach of the operators station. I agree with Jackstand, raise the mower deck, remove the blades (at least a pair, possibly three) and sharpen or replace as necessary. Doesn't hurt to have a spare set on hand. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the diesels fuel filters and put some diesel fuel treatment in the fuel tanks. Diesel Kleen® works well to keep injectors clear.
    Safe operations y'all, eye and ear protection.
    Take care of those machines as well as y'all do the racing/flying machines and y'all will be in good shape.

    Without knowing the exact composition of the concrete, it's difficult to say exactly how much it weighs. Density can be anywhere from 1.2 tons per cubic meter to 2.9, with about 2.4 being probably the most common. Roller is 2m by 1.55m cylinder, so 3.64m cubed; therefore roller is minimum 4.4 tons (9700lbs), maximum 10.5 tons (23,000lbs), most likely around 8.7 tons (19,000lbs).
    I reckon there's probably about 300 kilos (660lbs) of steel in there too, maybe more like 450kg (1000lbs). Difficult to guess without measurements but I reckon it's about 10m (33ft) of 10mm (3/8ths) I-beams, plus the tubes and stuff.
    So around 20,000lbs total...ish
    Cleeter and Squirrel restore the 4440? Would be hilarious to see a Project Prime wrap on that bad boy. Probably want some grass tires on her, so she don't tear up the runway as much as she flattens it.

    • @pepperthekobold
      @pepperthekobold 22 дні тому +2

    On that 2440, the "foot throttle" you found is the "goose button". You set your throttle with the main throttle control by the steering wheel, and use that if you need a short burst of more throttle to get yourself through some mud or up a hill or something like that.
    Also, on both of them, the two pedals to the right are your brakes. They're independent for each wheel to help you get tighter turns. That thing that connects the two helps you brake uniformly with both wheels.

    • @martrg1

      @@cs-gj3yf goose button isn't the deere name either. It describes the function of the button. It's not meant to be used continually and it's near impossible to maintain a certain throttle level with it, especially on bumpy terrain.

    The sidewalls on those tires will start coming off in chunks while the cleats will remain in tact. At least is how it happened to me with thirty plus year old dry rot tires that my grandfather put on new back in the '80's. Quality of old firestones showed that he got what he paid for all of the decades they plowed, as it was how he made his living farming. Now it's a mowing tractor, so I shopped around for the cheapest imports and two 15-38's with tubes ran me a grand several years ago.

    Those tractors are minty, love 'em. The 4440 was made from 78 to 82 and they sold a bunch of them. They weigh about 12000 pounds, have about 110 hp at the drawbar and use 4-5 gallons an hour when working. That era was still peak John Deere before all the recent silliness of trying to stop people from owning their stuff. My dad's farm never had stuff that big or that new, but I personally loved anything with green paint. :)
