11:53 it is output to comparator. By switching you can compare right had result with left had result of >standard< or known tuned frequency and compare levels on the meter.
A gasket would be compressable and so change the frequency, thats why it is metal to metal. I have 2 mechanical wavemeters, the nicest : www.pa4tim.nl/?p=4028 and very cool, a dedicated diode tester for the 1n21 diode: www.pa4tim.nl/?p=4130

That 'dried paste ' is the remnant of a silver foil rf gasket.
Never take these things apart if you don't exactly know what you're doing!
