In year 2022 there are still some cheap clocks and radio-clocks made with the LM8560, but it looks that they are slowly disappearing. It's too bad, since the LM8560 is a very reliable chip and uses very few power. My radio-clock absorbs only 1,7W, and I like the red LED displays.
Anyway thank you very much for the video! Now I finally understand why the colon on my clocks with the LM8560 doesn't flash. It is always lighted. I will check how it is connected to the board.
There are also some other “ghost” tricks with keys. Try the following combination and look what happens. Press:
Alarm+min+hours (it resets the alarm time to 0:00)
    Time+min+hours (both runs)
Keep alarm pressed then press sleep once. During the displaying of the seconds, keep pressed the min. button (it stops the time)
    Sleep+hours (Set sleep to 1h59min)

awesome information. I did this ages ago to a massive bedside led clock. took it to bits, swapped out the display for a much smaller one. soldered on some male and female headers so the display sandwiches together. did the 24 hour and colon mod to it and installed it into a project. made the alarm function hook to a relay via darlington transistor to turn on an outlet.
that extra chip you have can be used again as well, you will have to make your displays from scratch with single leds.

Great info Eric, I just converted an old Bush alarm clock of mine in the same fashion. Had the TMS3450 chip and some variant of the 637 display inside.

Thanx for your video and info, I shall now do this myself. I know now to check the LEDs are all there. The 50 - 60 Hertz switch would be good to make the clock run via a transformer and take it on your travels, Australia included. Your clock is now ready for when spindown day or evening eventually comes to where you live sometime in the future.
It would be interesting the pinout details for ICs older than the LM-8060 at least for frequency adjustment. I have an old digital clock that is from Canada, know that pin is somewhere but have never gotten around to converting it to 50 Hertz yet.
I had someone live in my house who would seem to get up a few hours later each day, and I did think of the idea of setting him up with a clock set for 60 Hertz running off the 50 Hertz mains, but I never did it.

What if the clock radio doesnt come with a switch, would it be possible to change a 60hrz to 50 hrz?

I have this exact clock radio. Or did. It had alot of issues, so I trashed it. Nice conversation of both the colon flashing and 24 hr.

Cool mod! You should show it off at a school!

I am glad I found this video. I picked up a similar one from the flea market, unfortunately the transformer is blown. If you can let me know the secondary voltages of the transfomer it will be really helpful.

Very nice video. I especially liked the last part with all the info.
I have an alarm clock, but some of the segments of the display are not lit properly. It is hard to read the time during the day. Do you have any suggestion to what the problem might be?

Thank you Eric for your video!
Is it possible to make the alarm clock displays wrong time (for example 56:98)? For this I suppose instead of a 24h cycle with 60 minutes cycle it would be 99h cycle with 99 minutes cycle. Is this possible to achieve?

just a thought, couldn't you have installed an inverter ic or similar logic ic to change the behavior of the AM indicator? I realize with 24hr mode this is hardly necessary but I guess my OCD is kicking in lol

Thanks for this great detailed video. I have a intertronic compact clock radio (with FM) however this clock displays only 24hr. I want to be able to convert to 12hr format. Just the reverse. Please suggest. this is 220v, 50hz european model.

I have a question, i bought a GE radio alarm clock from canada(60hrz) and brought it to europe, the times slows down cuz of the frequency here, (50hrz), is it possible to somehow modify it to 50 hrz so that the time works properly?

+GiantLew1 In 50 Hz countries, you could convert it to 60 Hz, and make the clock run slower.
