If there’s any consolation, Noctowl proved to be extremely broken in generation 8 Inheritance…when you gave its ability and movepool to Magearna. That’s better than some other mons can claim.
My ideas for Noctowl are two regional variants; one ice-flying based on snowy owls, and the other ground-flying based on burrowing owls. At least either form would be an improvement over base Noctowl at this point.
Novotel did get a LOT of cool buffs over the years though… Tinted Lens, Hurricane, Nasty split, Roost- the thing was a MONSTER in Gen 8 Randbats when you could Nasty Plot into Tinted Lens Max Airstream. It is prime candidate for an evolution or alternative typed region form though with all those great existing toys.
It's kinda sad that even during main story playthroughs of GSC Noctowl was middling at best. Noctowl really would've preferred to have its attack and special attack swapped back during the old days so it could at least deal decent damage, like, at all, instead of attempting to do so with non-STAB Confusion and Dream Eater that it gets for no reason.
Man, I was expecting a little mention of the Gen 4 split or that Noctowl got psycho shift which could pair with a flame orb to fish for burns. Instead I got to hear Noctowl's back story as a criminal, I can't believe it is that bad of a bird..... How unfortunate, despicable even. 😔
Noctowl was pretty good in Gen 2 and Gen 3 PU, which are newer tiers. In Gen 2 PU it’s a threatening boost sweeper with Curse, and in Gen 3 PU it uses Sub/Protect with Toxic and Leftovers to be an annoying presence on the field, with good coverage in Psychic. It also has a slight niche in Gen 7 PU while being very strong in ZU due to its new ability, Tinted Lens. So it hasn’t seen success nowhere, it’s not Ledian or Luvdisc or Beautifly tier, but it isn’t that much better than them
This video is pretty much why I want fsg to cover Pokémon go so badly. Lower tier staples like medicham, g-fisk, registeel, bastiodon, noctowl and azumarill are would be so fun to see covered
Some things that get Tinted Lens are almost entirely carried by it in competitive, like Lokix and Venomoth Some things get it but don’t have to run it, like Yanmega and Hisuian Braviary And then you have Noctowl
You can add Sigilyph in the group with Yanmega and Hisuian Braviary. It got Tinted Lens during Generation VII. It can run Tinted Lens, but I got word it tends to be used with Magic Guard and Life Orb.
@@cintronproductions9430 This made me imagine a Mono-Bug type run for Scarlet and Violet. Having both Lokix and Venomoth as a Tinted Lens duo that covers the physical and special sides respectively.
There is so much wrong with its stats, its like gamefreak didn't know what they wanted it to be. Not enough physical defense to be bulky, not enough special attack to be a special attacker, its type is not the best either. 20 point boost in special attack would have done nicely.
Easy: *Noct* get a new, species-exclusive ability that makes sleep last longer and makes sleep moves more likely to hit! And we already have the ablility name!: *Sleeper Hit*
Imagine dragging out a video about Noctowl for 10 minutes for the lulz and then completely forgetting it was ACTUALLY GOOD in Gen 8 to the point of even being banned from PU. Literally the first time I downvoted one of your videos.
Something I will never forget is in Sword and Shield I did a Noctowl raid and somehow the Noctowl used Max Lightning which should have been impossible but it did it anyways. At that point I knew that this was Noctowl's world and we're all just living in it.
When I was a kid I thought Noctowl was an absurdly powerful and rare legendary. My first ever game was Colosseum, and there's a shadow Noctowl to catch early on in Pyrite town, but it broke out of like 20 attempts to catch it no matter what I tried and always beat me while I tried to get it. I waited the entire game to get the master ball, and when I got it I went right back there and threw it at Noctowl without hesitation. And then I learned it fucking sucked and my dreams were shattered.
I know it's a joke and all. But I really don't care for these sarcastic hyperbole episodes. I understand WHY they do it, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather hear about how Noctowl tried his best and what he did even though he didn't succeed, rather than boring droned out exaggeration.
The weirdest part is: Noctowl did get buffed. It got Tinted Lens, Clam Mind, Nasty Plot, Agility, Hurricane, Stored Power and even Moonblast. This means that Noctowl can theoretically become a boosting unwallable megathreat that becomes impossible to fight back against because you can't outboost or outdamage it... ...theoretically. Fact is that Noctowl's stats and typing don't suit it enough to make use of this niche and makes it one of the most disappointing Pokemon out there. What a shame.
hey, it had some success in early SS if i recall correctly, the buffs it got in recent generations are pretty nice with Calm Mind and Nasty Plot, lets hope that it can find some success in a lower tier too this time around as well.
This Pokémon is so bad that even its Gen 2 spite 0:51 indicates it has additional eyebrows on the back of its head when its head tilts and then dissapears moments later after it moves its head straight. That's impressive.
There was one Noctowl I made for a Normal Type “Gym Team” back in gen 8 that actually proved to be somewhat formidable at times. I buffed the hell out of its HP and either it’s Defense or Sp. Def (can’t remember) and gave it the moves: - Moonblast - Air Slash or Hurricane (if you wanted more power) - Roost - Reflect All of this, paired with a Rocky Helmet, actually turned my Noctowl into a decent tank. Not at all perfect, just decent. Anyway that’s my contribution to how to make Noctowl somewhat viable.
Um, ngl I really just like your regular storytelling theme where you stick to the moves, the pokemon, its competitors, success and failure in each tier
@@primrosevale1995 why would you dmax weak mon when you could dmax something strong like gyarados. And dmax is banned in singles and nobody used noctowl in vgc.

Noctowl really would've preferred to have its attack and special attack swapped back during the old days so it could at least deal decent damage, like, at all, instead of attempting to do so with non-STAB Confusion and Dream Eater that it gets for no reason.
Ok dude, wow. That ongoing joke went on WAY to long
Man, I was expecting a little mention of the Gen 4 split or that Noctowl got psycho shift which could pair with a flame orb to fish for burns.
So it hasn’t seen success nowhere, it’s not Ledian or Luvdisc or Beautifly tier, but it isn’t that much better than them
I swear Beautifly had some niche in like, Gen 4 NU about a decade ago. I don't remember what it was but I remember using it to some effect
@@1stCallipostleit was a Quiver Dance sweeper starting in Gen 5, but in Gen 4... uh, just Compoundeyes Sleep Powder, mostly. :/
The editing during the "fakeout" was excellent, really sold the joke
When you've only written 200 words but the essay is 15000:
i have no idea what youre even talking about in half of this video. what does radicate have to do with noctowl?
These take interesting turns from time to time and yet they still manage to surprise me
This is the type of video you can't phase out of cause when you come back to you'll have no idea what's going on.
I dont like that tinted lens in gen 5 wasn't even mentioned
I did not expect fan fiction this morning.
what the hell.. This video didnt even talk about gen 8 PU noctowl which got banned in home metagame...
This video is pretty much why I want fsg to cover Pokémon go so badly. Lower tier staples like medicham, g-fisk, registeel, bastiodon, noctowl and azumarill are would be so fun to see covered
IT'S STUNFISK, NOT JUST FISK! PLEASE JUST SAY THE WHOLE NAME!

Some things that get Tinted Lens are almost entirely carried by it in competitive, like Lokix and Venomoth
Some things get it but don’t have to run it, like Yanmega and Hisuian Braviary
And then you have Noctowl
Yeah Lokix is a beast. They really did the first Bug-Dark type justice.
Then you have Sigilyph, who often has no need to run that ability since Magic Guard is too good.
Aerodynamic laserblast powered by cursed black fires of the deepest darkest hell. What is this, a new Gloryhammer song?
There is so much wrong with its stats, its like gamefreak didn't know what they wanted it to be.
Not enough physical defense to be bulky, not enough special attack to be a special attacker, its type is not the best either.
20 point boost in special attack would have done nicely.
Easy: *Noct* get a new, species-exclusive ability that makes sleep last longer and makes sleep moves more likely to hit!
And we already have the ablility name!:
*Sleeper Hit*
you know that a mon has it BAD when FSG decides to make a fanfiction about said mon rather than telling how well it did across the generations
Normally I don't watch these videos but I'm here bc of bkc. Glad I stayed
The bit got old real fast. And then it just… kept going… and going… and going…
Learns Defog, Roost and Moonblast so that's .... something I guess?
everytime he writes "how bad x was" instead of "how good x was" i feel bad for the pokemon
Bruh, I can't believe Noctowl got a video before Whimsicott
Imagine dragging out a video about Noctowl for 10 minutes for the lulz and then completely forgetting it was ACTUALLY GOOD in Gen 8 to the point of even being banned from PU.
Literally the first time I downvoted one of your videos.
Had this going as I was drifting to sleep and the sound of Ken's level 3 super just fucking activated my fight or flight instinct and woke me up.
NO MORE SWEARING PLEASE!

Something I will never forget is in Sword and Shield I did a Noctowl raid and somehow the Noctowl used Max Lightning which should have been impossible but it did it anyways. At that point I knew that this was Noctowl's world and we're all just living in it.
The second half of the video felt like a fever dream episode
When I was a kid I thought Noctowl was an absurdly powerful and rare legendary. My first ever game was Colosseum, and there's a shadow Noctowl to catch early on in Pyrite town, but it broke out of like 20 attempts to catch it no matter what I tried and always beat me while I tried to get it. I waited the entire game to get the master ball, and when I got it I went right back there and threw it at Noctowl without hesitation. And then I learned it fucking sucked and my dreams were shattered.
8:31 He got teared apart so hard that he no longer feels pain from a super effective Ice Beam. Talk about shattered hopes and dreams.
What's that, an early game bird Pokémon that isn't Staraptor or Talonflame is bad? Who could have predicted?

My first idea on how to buff Noctowl is a new signature move: Watchful Wings. +2 Priority, +1 to own Atk & Accuracy, -2 to one random stat of target.
This suddenly turned into a jimothy cool lore episode
4:25-4:28 Now I’m wanting the Street Fighter series to get its own How Good Was series.
How Great was Mienfoo actually would be cool, the king of little cup being able to show off how the tier has changed and it always remained
Wait, Didn't noctowl actually get banned in early SwSh PU? that's more honor than some other early birds! Like Unpheasant!
I love it when covering terrible Pokemon he makes joke videos on it. The Ledian video is one of my favorites
This video went in directions I never predicted it would
Oh come on it deserves an actual vid
I think the joke would've worked better if it didn't drag out for ten minutes. Like, compare this to the Castform video.
hey, it had some success in early SS if i recall correctly, the buffs it got in recent generations are pretty nice with Calm Mind and Nasty Plot, lets hope that it can find some success in a lower tier too this time around as well.
Yeah it got QB from gen 8 PU at one point I believe
Was not prepared for the narrative. Well done!
This is an entire bibliography. Always amazing FSG!
This Pokémon is so bad that even its Gen 2 spite 0:51 indicates it has additional eyebrows on the back of its head when its head tilts and then dissapears moments later after it moves its head straight. That's impressive.
You didn't even mention its gen 9 return
There was one Noctowl I made for a Normal Type “Gym Team” back in gen 8 that actually proved to be somewhat formidable at times. I buffed the hell out of its HP and either it’s Defense or Sp. Def (can’t remember) and gave it the moves:
- Moonblast
- Air Slash or Hurricane (if you wanted more power)
- Roost
- Reflect
All of this, paired with a Rocky Helmet, actually turned my Noctowl into a decent tank. Not at all perfect, just decent. Anyway that’s my contribution to how to make Noctowl somewhat viable.
Um, ngl I really just like your regular storytelling theme where you stick to the moves, the pokemon, its competitors, success and failure in each tier
Remember when FSG actually covered the competitive careers of little used Pokémon?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
This unhinged script is better than "this pokemon is bad and fell to untiered 8 times in a row"
@@yeet8036 Noctowl was a great Dynamax abuser. You didn't see that mentioned here.
@@primrosevale1995 why would you dmax weak mon when you could dmax something strong like gyarados.
And dmax is banned in singles and nobody used noctowl in vgc.
@@yeet8036 Still a notable use.
I got so invested in Noctowl's dark noir story, I forgot I was watching a competitive analysis video
"the first shiny pokemon to appear in the anime!"
pretty sure there was a shiny butterfree before that actually...
This is soo not fair, i thought Terrakion would get covered after Cobalion & Virizion got videos!
Terrakion is gonna be a decently long one considering how monstrous it was
Terrakion is not going to get an episode. It is going to get a movie.
Also worth noting that its old buddy Raticate got a new form, its old nemesis Pidgeot got a Mega, the other forgettable early gen Normal/Flying type Farfetch'd got a new form and evolution, AND we got a cooler and competitively better owl in Gen 7. Poor Noctowl, GameFreak can be so cruel
I can’t explain how fucking funny it is that it took me half the video to realize it’s just clips of Noctowl being KO’d constantly, that is so hilarious
make a new form of Noctowl based on burrowing owls so at minimum it has a goated ground flying typing
This took a weird turn
3:01 sounds like a villain’s backstory
BKC said he was real satisfied with this script so I'm excited.
edit: yeah, okay this is great. the esoteric monologuing about the futility of fitting in and the performative kindness pervasive among the ttars and skarms of gen 3 ou being a vehicle for a sf6 joke is crazy.
Bro I am SO confused about what was going on in this video lol what bag were you talking about and why was Raticate mentioned so much? What elders?
Thats called storytelling
Imagine if it got a regional varient like its type is Ghost and Normal
