I purchased this game yesterday with low expectations and ended up playing it until really late at night totally hooked and excited. Wow! I’m in shock! I’m 40 and sadly I don’t have too much time to play video games anymore but this reminded me why I loved the FF games years ago. The soundtrack and voice acting, I’m very happy!
This seems to be a massive return to form and I'm glad. I only got into the series a few years ago so this is the first brand new one to release for me.
Same here , my mind is blown! I’m Also very happy to get some old school final fantasy vibes back for once. I love this game so far, I can’t seem to turn it off.
This is a great song that sounds like making an homage to Don't be Afraid (battle theme of FF8). It's one of the best music I heard in a Final Fantasy in post-Nobuo Uematsu era
Oh boy, you need to hear Soken work on FF XIV for those post Uematsu era of FF music. Anything after Heavensward is most likely Soken's work. Try Wurm's Tail, Eden Promise, Endcaller and Voidcast Saviour.

It's been stuck in my head for like a month, I find myself humming the chorus every day multiple times, it's my favorite battle theme after a lot of thought.
Actually for me it is an hommage to all the credibly talented composers who crafted the soundscapes of FFs past. If you listen carefully, the first part is really Nobuo Uematsu with Don't Be Afraid from Final Fantasy VIII. With the rythm of the strings and the triangle which is really not common. Then, the second part looks like "Esper Battle" From Final Fantasy XII (Hitoshi Sakimoto) with the tubular bells, the powerfulls horns and the way that the percussions are playing. Then, the third part is really close to the musics of Yoko Shimomura from Final Fantasy XV, KH, ETC. with the violin playing with long notes and in the back you Can listen to the epic horns which give the rythm and the quick percussions. It is really Shimomura. Then the last part, its an hommage to Masashi Hamauzu, from final fantasy XIII. One single string with a glamour melody, and of course the piano in the back that Hamauzu loves so much. Then the single string ends with a higher note. It really looks like final fantasy XIII. That is why I love so much this music. I can recognize the style of 4 emblematics composers of Final Fantasy ❤❤❤ thank You Soken Sama and sorry for my english, I'm french.

Then from 1:45 onwards we come to the Masashi Hamauzu Era or Squaresoft merging into Square Enix with FF 13 and its leitmotif nod to "Blinded by Light". Soken uses a single string line with a chromatic melody and really leans towards Hamauzu's style with airy notes. Soken then decides to honor the latest addition to the Final Fantasy mainline series and longtime veteran Yoko Shiomura. At 2:35 we now hear his leitmotif for "Apocalypse Noctis" from FFXV. Then subtle overlays including at 3:10 with a Hitoshi Sakimoto nod with the tubular bells. He juggles back to Yoko Shiomura around 3:27 and were back with Noct and the boys with another reprise of Wicked Winds Whisper. The song is insane and I do believe I hear a little homage to FFXI as well with the bridge being similar to "Onslaught" in which the snare drums and percussive elements are very attacking and charging in nature. It is composed by another great creative mind, Naoshi Mizuta.

While people say “newer final fantasy isn’t final fantasy”, I find this to be better than the original combat system. I do like the turn based combat, but real time, open world combat just has a different feeling to it. You have so much more control over the fight and you have to actually be smarter than your enemies, which is what makes newer final fantasy games better and more unique in their own way.
I don't even understand that view point they have for FF. The combat system isn't what makes any of the games a FF game. For me anyway, it's usually the story having some common theme between the series. Most of them have a theme revolving around crystals (not all of course). Or something else tying them together. I think and this is my opinion of course, that a lot of people are blinded by nostalgia and are unwilling to embrace change. Idk where you get crystals being a core theme of the games. That said, you are allowed to love the new stuff, but I think the issues come down to FF not really having an identity whatsoever. It’s got shared assets like chocobos, moogles, cid. However, those things are just flat out inconsequential. You ask people what the identity of FF is and you get an insane variety of answers that aren’t congruent with each other. FF7 isn’t like FF1, FF7 isn’t like even FF14, FF14 is nothing like FF15. So on. Gotta be reasonable bro, cant say FF fans are the problems when evidently it’s an internal issue with square and FF
Because it's generic. None of the music is bad, it's just mostly boring. There's like 3 pieces of music in this game that I can remember after beating this game, and I don't care to go back and repeat listen to any of them. Extremely disappointing soundtrack.
@@garitobee7541that's your problem then. This is such a strong and varied soundtrack. Ascension sounds like a classical song, all of the Titan themes are rock, and stuff like Eikonoclasm are wild shit

When fighting against goblins and rock turtles sounds you’re going up against a final boss, you know they hit it out of the park with this soundtrack. I’m blown away by this game so far!
This is pretty much what i expect for a modern FF battle theme, it retains the classic feels in the intro before quickly dive into more "cinematic" feels with how FF combat evolve overtime
@@omensoffate look really feel you on this one because i had the same feeling as the comment above and was really confused as how they got that emotional reaction from me despite how little time you spend with those set of characters. But I think Joshua's personality shines through even with the small amount of time that you spend with him, at least enough to pull some sort of emotion if you like don't have too high expectations for story telling. I do agree that the emotional payoff would be times more effective if the game gave you more time with him but at least for me and some other folk it was enough to at least get something out of us.
@@omensoffate Sure but the prologue is well, prologue. It establishes the main characters' motivations, backstory and friends ahead of time. It being executed well is a big bonus for a demo.
There’s a lot of tragedy in this theme, and also a lot of inspiration from Uematsu’s work in the previous titles. It’s so good how Soken plays with old notes and modernizes them to a current trend.
@@s3_singularity187 Overall song is very melancholic throughout. It sounds like a battle theme but more desperate, like people fighting for their lives. You can compare this to other battle themes like Persona 5 where the overall tone is more upbeat but still a fight song nonetheless, as if they're getting ready to give it their all.
This song has been rent free in my head for months and I would have rioted if it hadn't won score of the year. Imagine being tasked with writing an OST that calls back to 30 years of seriously memorable music, and when you ask what key to put it in, they're like "all of them?!" And he fucking over delivered, I'm so happy for him. This OST is a masterpiece that should be studied forever.
the hardest part about making a battle theme is making it catchy and memorable that you never get tired of hearing it. ff16 makes childsplay of this difficulty
This theme has got me. The harmonics and notation make this so lively but also dramatic. And yea. In a deadly fantasy world every battle would feel like this. Very fitting.
@@paulklp8262 I disagree it’s cinematic but the combat needs less of that to concentrate on positions and combo potential. To much cinematic angling and shit would ruin your placement.

It sounds a lot like Final Fantasy 8! Especially when Clyfe approaches the opponent with his lighter arm outstretched! Super cool! Like in the intro of FF8!!
"what even is a key?" Literally soken while winning OST of the year. I love this song so much, it just crawls down the keyboard a note at a time, and if you know, you know. FF 16 is a masterpiece.
It's not exactly FF8, intro is an unusual 11/4 time signature that goes into a standard 3/4 for the rest, while FF8 was 5/4 all throughout. But in that 11/4, half the measure can be heard as 5/4 (6/4+5/4=11/4). So that little flourish along with the descending horms and the chime makes it a perfect homage to FF8 while being its own thing
I hear a-lot of Masashi Hamauzu and Nobuo Uematsu vibes from this piece; it sounds so damn good. Especially around this point 1:44, a-lot of Hamauzu feel to it!
As described in another comment here, 1:43 has a XIII feel to it and that makes my soul happy! Love the sudden change in tone, like you're near the end of the battle and a pre-fanfare is starting to build up before the end.
This is the only i slept on went it came and i’m an avid final fantasy player, and it has not disappointed me yet. The story, the battle system and the Aeons or summon fights, ifrit vs titan was the best, i was extremely impressed, once i have finished my video game design degree program, i want Square enix on my project. I actually have some cyberpunk idea with this battle system
The last section of this song is everything to me. It’s so sad and beautiful and it’s really sinking in for XVI being the first Final Fantasy game I’ve ever played and complete(besides VII Remake since it’s not done).
I’m glad I’m not the only one that hears FF8 in the beginning. I know that FF8 is considered one of the weaker entires, but growing up with it I can’t help but adore that game.

Man, Blinded by Light is really good. People can say whatever they want about XIII but when I first heard the track back when I played the game more than a decade ago, it instantly became one of my top favorite battle themes on any game. I still listen to it until now. And then XVI's battle theme came along and my list now just welcomed a new family member lol
As long time final fantasy fan this music has something special. I think it maybe the mix from manny final fantasy you just feel something make you comback to hear more
Just from the demo alone this might already be my favourite FF battle theme, hits so many FF musical tropes but is still so fresh and unique And, I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if XVI's OST became my favourite too. The OST in the demo was flawless (thanks Soken!)
FINALLY got it yesterday and played until about 1am. So far it's pacing to be my favorite FF ever. Watching Jill's heart break, Clive be an edgy teen, the betrayal, and the combat.
1:43 I CANNOT COMPREHEND SUCH MUSICAL MAGESTY…
How people do not like this games music is beyond me, ff fans are strange.
Actually it is the song of FF legacy together FF8,FF12,FF13,FF14 solid
FF fans are like Star Wars fans
The battle themes are indeed fantastic, but the location and ambient music is pretty mid.
This is so good I heard the start of FF8 battle theme, then the battle vs Espers of FF12, after that some FF14 style that moved to FF15 and at the end some FF13, I'm loving this OST
so its basically a FF theme XD
1:08 sounds like Magicked Skulls from FFXIV's Eureka ost
@@jorgelumill158DEFINITELY no wonder I felt so much nostalgia… I hear a masterful mash up of past battle themes. 🥹
From 0:00 to 0:50 is as alliterary nod and homage to the grandmaster Nobuo Uematsu in which Soken uses the motif from Final Fantasy 8 - "Don't Be Afraid" to directly tie anticipation and nostalgia into one bundle..
From 0:52 onward we hear the next titan composer honored Hitoshi Sakimoto, Square's next addition to thier lineup in 1997 with FF Tactics. Soken uses a lietmotif from "Esper Battle" which is from FFXII.
From 1:09 onwards we are brought back to Soken's own work from FFXIV - "Wicked Winds Whisper" which is played in Eureka.
He juggles back to Yoko Shiomura around 3:23 and were back with Noct and the boys lol.
The song is amazing.
I can hear all the legacy of Final Fantasy in this theme.
Soken is a God.
Thank you so much, been waiting to hear it in full since the trailers!
Is this the same song from the playstation showcase. It sounds similar but not 100% a like
@@tiberuishunter5390 it is! I think it might sound different since we can hear it better too.
@@naoisme actually found the song for the showcase. It's the Morbol Battle
@@tiberuishunter5390 :) thanks for letting me know!
@@tiberuishunter5390 That song and that showcase convinced me after 2+ years to get a ps5 ngl
I absolutely love this theme and it gets me hyped to battle random monster.
1:10 is where I started hearing the Ys8 opening and Spiral of Erebos, and that just made me fall in love with this song even more. I need falcom team and Soken to collab on an official song now!
Holy shit that does sound like Ys.. Jindo and Soken collab would be crazy
OMGGGG YOU'RE FUCKING RIGHT WTFFFF
ofc those who haven't played cold steel wouldn't get that reference but holy shit bruh 🤯🤯🤯
if your'e interested, this part is from ff14 "wicked winds whisper" eureka theme which is made by soken too. it's really good
I KNEW IT SOUNDED FAMILIAR, it really made me hum the main theme for ys 8, that game is my second favorite of all time (Persona 5 and 5 Royal are number 1 for me)
Ys 8's opening wasn't from sound team jdk/Falcom. it was an outsourced song to Yukihiro Jindo
I wish I could relive the experience of playing this game for the first time again. So incredible 🤩
The end of the demo absolutely gutted me, sadness for Joshua and Clive and a seething hatred for Anabelle.
Bitch mom
How it happened 1 hour in you saw Joshua for 5 mins.
@@JehuisRad exactly it made me somehow love joshua and Clive in an hour 😭 that’s good writing
@@omensoffate Sure but the prologue is well, prologue. It establishes the main characters' motivations, backstory and friends ahead of time.
It being executed well is a big bonus for a demo.
Unbelievably catchy and a banger of a theme. Already stuck in my head and I just started playing!
1:44 … gawd damn !!!!
It's so beautiful and sad yet somehow still fits as part of a battle
It screams nothing but Joshua to me. And now I have to cry to the night sky
it really is the best part of this song 🔥
Ayyy, It reached one million!
Congratulations Barnabas, this battle theme finally gets more attention than it deserves👍
this might be undoubtfully the best battle theme of the franchise.
so epic
FF 4, FF 7, FF 10, FF 15 says hello
@@BeanMan157sorry ff8 ff12 ff13 and ff16 all all have better themes than the games you named
@@theprotagonist202512 doesn’t have a battle theme poser
ff12 doesnt haver a battle theme 💀💀💀
You're truly doing the lord's work with these. Can't wait for the boss battle theme 🔥
There’s a lot of tragedy in this theme, and also a lot of inspiration from Uematsu’s work in the previous titles. It’s so good how Soken plays with old notes and modernizes them to a current trend.
We can call that a banger 😄
What do you mean there's a lot of tragedy?
@@s3_singularity187 Overall song is very melancholic throughout. It sounds like a battle theme but more desperate, like people fighting for their lives. You can compare this to other battle themes like Persona 5 where the overall tone is more upbeat but still a fight song nonetheless, as if they're getting ready to give it their all.
This song has been rent free in my head for months and I would have rioted if it hadn't won score of the year.
Imagine being tasked with writing an OST that calls back to 30 years of seriously memorable music, and when you ask what key to put it in, they're like "all of them?!"
And he fucking over delivered, I'm so happy for him. This OST is a masterpiece that should be studied forever.
the hardest part about making a battle theme is making it catchy and memorable that you never get tired of hearing it. ff16 makes childsplay of this difficulty
Gives you an idea of what final fantasy 8 remake battle theme would sound like as well.
Soken really pulling off that classic battle ost vibe! Has that uematsu feel with Soken twist
This theme has got me. The harmonics and notation make this so lively but also dramatic. And yea. In a deadly fantasy world every battle would feel like this. Very fitting.
This game is absolutely mind blowing , it’s like tactics, and what 15 should have been with dragons dogma
FFXV walked so FFXVI could run as fast as Usian Bolt
They looked at Noctis' Warp Strike and went "that was one of the best ideas they had, let's put it somewhere better"
Then we got Phoenix Shift
@@RasenRendanX ff15 barely crawled lmfao
FF16's FOV is too close. FF15's camera is actually better for the warp-heavy real time action combat they're going for.
@@paulklp8262 I disagree it’s cinematic but the combat needs less of that to concentrate on positions and combo potential. To much cinematic angling and shit would ruin your placement.
This song is perfect, we get hype, sorrow, and triumph all in one
*Sigh* has it really been 16 games in?....man the time flies by doesnt it..... ive been playing final fantasy games since i was about 5 years old (first one was 4 on super nes then II) my older brother introduced it to me, id sit down and we'd try to figure out where to go...how to beat bosses, which gear to put on who......and ive been playing every main line game (and spin offs too) ever since, im so happy to see that it made it to 16, it was my dad that rented us final fantasy II on snes back in the day, he's gone now, my mom too she'd rent us mario rpg alot lol...shes gone as well.... but ever since they did that when i play one; old or in this case, a new one... i think of them, and ill keep playin them until im gone too, lets all keep playin these games. *wipes the tears and keeps playing*
Had tears when I was listening to this and playing the demo 😭 This is going to be a good game.
The solo violin really gets you off guard while beating up that adamantoise.
This Game will be so Nostalgic in couple of year.
It sounds a lot like Final Fantasy 8! Especially when Clyfe approaches the opponent with his lighter arm outstretched! Super cool! Like in the intro of FF8!!
Gotta be thankful. FF8 battle theme was remade for FF16. Same epicness all over again ❤
"what even is a key?"
Literally soken while winning OST of the year. I love this song so much, it just crawls down the keyboard a note at a time, and if you know, you know.
FF 16 is a masterpiece.
Never played much Final Fantasy. Don’t know anything about the lore or the games other than 7. The demo for 16 absolutely blew me away!
Welcome to the franchise! Each Final Fantasy as its own story and world. You can totally start with 16. 😌
I can't have enough of this masterpiece.
Oh my gosh is that the XIV Eureka theme at 1:09?? I love this so much...
Sure is! Which itself is a remix of the FATE boss theme.
Edit: it’s more accurately a rearrangement rather than a remix.
I have played and heard every Final Fantasy related battle theme. This is my favourite battle theme of all time
Beginning is the best part the repeating melody part is amazing it buulds up to that again amazingly over the song
They used Final Fantasy 8 battle theme melody, I love that. They didn't hold OMG, everything in this game is incredible
@@WinkleAbidingwow you know your stuff! Music major I assume? You should apply at square Enix lol
@OrganizationXIII I'm a complete amateur lol. But time signatures I've always found interesting, especially unusual ones
Definitely the best Final Fantasy battle theme ever
This battle theme is so good man!!!
Soken to Yoshi-P: "How much epic do you want your battle theme to be this time around?"
Yoshi-P: "Yes"
Soken: "YES"
This one is just like FF8, no wonder it sounds familiar. I can almost hear Quistis' whip
I hear a-lot of Masashi Hamauzu and Nobuo Uematsu vibes from this piece; it sounds so damn good. Especially around this point 1:44, a-lot of Hamauzu feel to it!
During that part I get FF13 vibes 😃
As described in another comment here, 1:43 has a XIII feel to it and that makes my soul happy! Love the sudden change in tone, like you're near the end of the battle and a pre-fanfare is starting to build up before the end.
Just because i like this theme..im gonna give this game a try
Great game hope you're enjoying it
game's fire, yeah?
Ohhh you will hear lots of more epic than this theme trust me
I got goosebumps!!!!
I can't believe this game is already a year ago, can't wait for the PC version to be released so that this game can benefit an even wider audience.
This song is absolutely stuck in my head.
This is my favorite song from FF 16 OST.
BIG FF8 VIBES, LOVE IT
I honestly think soken its a fan of ff viii ost, he even arrange some tracks for shadowbringers ff xiv expansion. Awesome
One if not the best battle theme ever
Thank you SQUARENIX for remastering my favorite battle theme from my favorite & first FF game
The last section of this song is everything to me. It’s so sad and beautiful and it’s really sinking in for XVI being the first Final Fantasy game I’ve ever played and complete(besides VII Remake since it’s not done).
God this track always follows me whenever I quit my session. So good.
1:43 is absolutely magical
A battle theme worthy of joining the other certified bangers from this franchise.
This is really growing on me the more I keep hearing it. It is truly worthy of being a FF battle theme.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that hears FF8 in the beginning. I know that FF8 is considered one of the weaker entires, but growing up with it I can’t help but adore that game.
The people who said 16 won't be final fantasy is in shambles
Yup

"Dont Be Afraid"
Reminiscence of FINAL FANTASY VIII Battle Theme. One of the best FF in the series; often called the Black Sheep of the series.
It's only fitting how VIII has arguably the best OST in the series outside XIV, and now XVI (double the number) is also coming for the crown 👑
Jacob Teague Not just OST, I'd say one of the best story and twist as well.
No one ever call FF8 the black sheep, what are you talking about? xddddd
If there is any black sheep for lots of fans, it always has been XIII, or X-2 xddd
@@gatts1989 Or II. II is also called the black sheep
The Battle Theme, Hunt Theme and Eikon Battle Theme are perfect renditions of the same melody and beat intensifying in relation to the battle
My God this game is going to be GOTD: game of the decade, at least.
Best battle theme in the series. I never thought they would top Blinded by Light but Soken did it.
Strangely enough this gave me FVIII and XIII battle theme vibes. I’m obsessed already.
@@ryanrushford7918 Yeah, the first 15 seconds sound just like the beginning of VIII's battle theme.
Blinded by light bounces around my head from time to time for several hours. This one has been too
Genius musicians
Man, Blinded by Light is really good. People can say whatever they want about XIII but when I first heard the track back when I played the game more than a decade ago, it instantly became one of my top favorite battle themes on any game. I still listen to it until now. And then XVI's battle theme came along and my list now just welcomed a new family member lol
it's not good as blinded by light.
My new favorite battle theme in the FF series.
Blinded by Light is on second place now.
I fucking love the piano part. It goes like "dun dun dun" It is so fucking AMAZING. Soken did it again.
Multiple great melodies throughout the entire piece
As long time final fantasy fan this music has something special. I think it maybe the mix from manny final fantasy you just feel something make you comback to hear more
Just from the demo alone this might already be my favourite FF battle theme, hits so many FF musical tropes but is still so fresh and unique
And, I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if XVI's OST became my favourite too. The OST in the demo was flawless (thanks Soken!)
It’s incredible what Soken archived with the soundtrack, and all of this fighting a Cancer, that’s mindblowing
1:44-2:18. Pure elegance.
Soken is just a genius my friend
You know it what. During that part I somewhat get FF13 battle theme vibes.
This is my favorite part. It always makes me think of Joshua. The Eikon battle’s rendition of this section is even sadder
Pure trash
its SO good

8 was my first ff game, so when i heard the first few seconds of this song, i was instantly hooked
FINALLY got it yesterday and played until about 1am. So far it's pacing to be my favorite FF ever.
Watching Jill's heart break, Clive be an edgy teen, the betrayal, and the combat. Man, the combat has me feeling like I'm 10 again, and FF4 just debuted ATB.
This game is everything, and Clive is great.
