Fresh dates compose of soft, easily digestible flesh and simple sugars like fructose and dextrose. 100 g of dates hold 277 calories. When eaten, they replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly. They are rich in dietary fiber, which prevents LDL cholesterol absorption in the gut.
They contain health benefiting antioxidants known as tannins,
and are moderate sources of vitamin-A (contains 149 IU per 100 g), which is known to have antioxidant properties and essential for vision.
Dates are an excellent source of iron, carry 0.90 mg/100 g of fruits (about 11% of RDI) and they are an excellent sources of potassium. 100 g contains 696 mg or 16% of daily-recommended levels of this electrolyte.
Date fruits are also rich in minerals like calcium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Calcium is an important mineral that is an essential constituent of bone and teeth, and required by the body for muscle contraction, blood clotting, and nerve impulse conduction..

Thank you and many blessings to you for great information, first time eating raw dates and they are crunchy and delicious. I think the puckering feeling in the mouth and teeth is alum, also found in unripe persimmons. The dates remind me of a honey crisp apple.

My absolute favorite they are full of fiber and when you want them just before they over ripe they are so sweet and don’t have that alum puckering anymore!

@@RaihanasCuisines The cause of the astringency is probably tannic acid. This is present in a fair number of other fruits (persimmons, quince, sapodilla, etc.) and can be reduced either by letting the fruit ripen further or bletting (freezing and then thawing) the fruit. They are usually safe to eat when a little astringent, though if they are too astringent or you have too many, they can cause blockages (phytobezoars).

Dear Maam, My friend grows these Barhi dates near Hyderabad, India. It grows well but since it is a new crop the locals are not buying much and there is a bit of marketing problem here for these kharak stage dates. He also says that they get spoilt within 3-4 days of harvesting them. He doesn't know how to process them further. Can you tell how to do value-addition or process them further. Is it possible to process these kharak dates into the ripe dates which have a shelf life of 6 months to a year. Can you provide me any web-resources on this value-addition. Are you from Gujarat? Namaskar & Good wishes to you.
