BLOW DRYING DREADLOCKS?!

  • If you’ve had dreadlocks for a long enough period of time you’ll know that the washing and drying process can be quite time consuming and rather annoying - and as the dreadlocks mature and grow longer… this process doesn’t get any easier.
    It’s important to be able to effectively and efficiently dry dreadlocks. For one so that you can get on with your day and not have your life revolve around damp dripping dreadlocks and secondly so you can avoid the risk of mould/dreadrot that comes along with improperly dried dreadlocks.
    How to dry dreadlocks: • HOW TO DRY DREADLOCKS!
    Different people will have different drying routines for their hair depending on, well, pretty much what’s practical for them and their situation. Someone with short dreadlocks in a hot dry climate is unlikely to follow the exact routine as someone in with long dreadlocks in a cold, damp environment. There’s all sorts of different ways to dry dreadlocks, towels, shaking, squeezing, sitting in the sun - today I’m going to cover blowdrying… if that wasn’t already obvious by the title above.
    Hairdryers are pretty popular among dreadheads for pretty obvious reasons. A lot of people with dreadlocks will have had long-is hair before starting out and so most will already own a hairdryer, but many will ask whether it’s appropriate to use one on dreadlocks - is it effective? is it safe?
    The risks that blowdrying poses to dreadlocks are the same risks that are posed to regular hair… as, well, dreadlocks are still formed from hair after all. Excessive heat can damage hair… and dreadlocks are made from hair. Dreadlocks are slow drying - it’s not so difficult to dry the outside - this can be done simply with a towel, but it’s the inner part that retains the moisture that you want to actually dry out. The problem is that people will be tempted to just crank the hairdryer and pretty much fry the dreadlocks. Trying to dry them this way really isn’t all that effective as you simply end up drying out the exterior hairs - the high levels of heat on your hair will then usually be uncomfortable on your head and then you’ll have to stop before you’ve actually really done any good. This is really not a method of drying that I’d recommend as the targeted high heat is not going to be very effective at drying the dreadlocks and will have an increased risk of damage to the hair…. but I do still personally use a hairdryer.
    My method for using a hairdryer is to enclose the dreadlocks in a dry towel and funnel warm air into the towel. This provides a warm environment with a gentle heat that will be distributed to all the dreadlocks and not just concentrated to cook one specific patch. Your head will also be within the towel so you’ll be able to make sure that it doesn’t get too hot in there - if it’s too hot for your face, it’s too hot for the dreadlocks. A slow, gentle drying is more effective and less damaging than a concentrated application of a hairdryer on turbo high.
    How you dry your own dreadlocks is going to be entirely up to you and will require you to weigh up the pros and cons and consider them against your personal situation in order to find what works best for you.

    Thank you so much for the videos about hair drying maintenance! I've had my locks for 4 years, and they've recently been feeling uncomfortably heavy when wet, to the point of me considering brushing them out entirely. Your tips on drying have helped out a ton!

    I have been using the towel tunnel and it works great for mine. I just shake them out with my hands first. I also do the head banging motion and slap them against my forearm with a towel draped over my arm. This uses inertia to sling more water out.

    I use a diffuser attached to my blow dryer. I also have straight ends so I grab about 5 at a time and lay them in the diffuser and the ends come out with a slight curl. Love it that way :)

    Thanks! I've been using a blow-dryer on medium heat & it usually takes me 20-25 mins. to dry my hair. I'll try the towel tunnel & see if its any faster.

    So I've seen with a few different dread heads they might wrap string around the dread and I'm curious how this may or may not benefit the dread before I try it myself. Also I use the off brand Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo, would you say that's a good residue free shampoo? Thank you!!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +2

      Celeste Graham the main purpose of wrapping string is decorative. Wrapped young dreads may also somewhat look more 'together'... as they're held together with string, but it won't be all that beneficial to the progression of the dreads and if they're wrapped too tightly their progress may be slowed.
      I have no experience with that shampoo so I'm afraid that I'm unable to comment on it's effectiveness.

    I have two dreads at the back of my head that started pulling on hair I didn't want it to, so I blindly cut what I felt was being pulled. Now that my hairs been growing and I see the top, I've realized that they're way thin. I regret cutting them so quickly, but I'd like know if there's anything I can do to make the base thick again. It's starting to really get to me. I'd love your help, thank you.

    Hi there! A few weeks ago I did the twist and rip method (thanks to your informative videos) and have a question. If I use a crochet hook to 'blunt' the ends would I still have a good chance of removing dreads with not much damage later on compared to leaving them? Thank you :)

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      Mia Antonievich It depends how tightly they get crocheted up, but I don't think you'll make a huge difference by blunting the ends - they'll be time consuming to remove either way ^^

    great video, I've been trying on that on my little baby dreads haha. Question though, I've been washing them once a week always on the same day, and I squeeze and palm roll them after my shower, wrap my head in a towel for a bit and then use the towel tunnel idea of yours with a blow dryer. Now periodically throughout day each day since mine are still forming I spray the dollylocks dreadlocks spray into my dreads to help dry them but is this a bad idea to do on the day I decide to wash and dry my dreadlocks if they are still slightly damp?

    You're not kidding...worse part of having mature locks, esp when you have curly hair. I try to blow dry my locks by the scalp and on a low setting because the ends of mine are very dry, on the bottoms I'll use the cool setting just to get some air through the locks to prevent locks from getting dread rot.
    I think I may try the tunnel idea next time I wash though.

      You don't need anyone to put dreads in if you already have long curly hair. I had a black lady put in dreads for me long ago and she used tons of wax, twisted my hair in perfect little rows, and told me but to wash it for two weeks. I later two days before washing it out. The dreads I have now grew naturally on their own over time

    My dreads are a similar length and thickness to yours. I've never tried the "towel-tunnel" method, but I tend to use a combination of tricks in order...
    towel dry
    shake the water to the tips
    blow dry...
    repeat until it's as dry as I can get them...
    This can still take hours though...
    how long does the towel-tunnel technique usually take you?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +3

      +rudeboytony I can't say how long it takes me because I don't continue blow drying until all the dreadlocks are bone dry. I blow dry in bursts of 3-5 minutes around 4-5 times during the hour or so after I've washed them while I get on with my day.
