  • There is some mysteriousness to how chiropractic adjustments work and how chiropractors know where to adjust. In this video, Dr. O'Guin answers both of these questions.
Chiropractic adjustments remove restrictions from joints, relax surrounding muscle tension, relieve pain, and improve coordination.
Chiropractors know where to adjust by palpating for joint and soft tissue (muscle) restrictions.

Super curious, I had a diaphragm rupture in 2010, due to a knee in my back. It was spontaneous, I also have had surgeries. What are the risks of Chiropractic adjustments for someone who has had this type of issue?

What is the adjustment for releasing or stopping a deep dull ache to the upper right side of my spine? It constantly feels like something needs to pop and/or shift and move. It feels like it's around the right side of either my c-7 or t-1, maybe t-2 area. It feels like it's where the far right side of the flanged end of the vertebrae is meeting the very top rib joint or maybe an end of the collarbone. All i know is that every chiro i've tried they all do the same techniques, even when i explain i've already had that move tried on me. They all want to twist the neck and pop it. Then push down dead center of the spine and try and get that to pop. And turn me on my side and put the one leg tucked behind the other and then slightly twist me at waist and then push the shoulder in opposite direction , trying to pop as many vertebrae in the spine as possible. But none of that pops or adjusts the one specific area. If i'm lying down on my back and hug myself and exhale and twist and roll side-to side, the right side in various spots will pop(and crunch & grind) but in the areas of what feels like my ribs connecting in the facet joints, But yet this one specific spot will not pop. If i put my right arm across my chest to the left, and grip side of bed and rock a little , i get pops in various spots, but not the one that aggravates me to no end. I can also put right arm across my chest and grip side of bed and then use left arm to grab side of head and pull it, and the neck will pop(or crunch/grind) in various spots. but i can never get this one damn spot to release. I've tried foam rollers. I get pops all over the right side except that one specific spot. Same with various sizes and stiffness of balls, racquetballs, tennis balls, softballs. To me it feels like i need a heel or base of palm of hand to push deep in that spot and then a hard thrust to pop whatever is bound up. And regular docs are no help. i've tried ortho specialists, neuro specialists, etc. and they all just take scans or xrays and say they don't see anything broken so they don't know what it is. The consensus is always that "it sounds muscle related. have you tried a muscle relaxer?" And i'm always like "Yes. They don't help."

Hey Dr. O'Guin. You talked about how different chiropractors practice different techniques. I was wondering your opinion on chiropractic biophysics and there practice of mirror stretching on their denneroll products. Thank you

Thanks for the question Tyler. I will attempt to answer. However, I want to be clear that I don't know everything about chiropractic biophysics. I say this because I don't want you or anyone who uses this technique to think I'm bashing it. I don't know much about it because the little bit that I do know is not in line with I consider excellent musculoskeletal care. They seem to focus mostly on alignment based on xrays. The problem with that, in my opinion, is that it doesn't address high quality movement. When people move better, they feel better, usually. That being said, I do think there is some evidence to support they do a pretty decent job of correcting posture. I personally think they encourage people to come in for more sessions than necessary without encouraging people to do self-rehab.

@@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis thank you so much for the answer! I've been trying to find something that works for me and my issues. I'm a chef so I'm constantly looking down, and developed military neck because of it. I used a cervical denneroll and that seems to have fixed that issue, but I still have pain around my upper back and shoulders. I was told that the muscles are just so overworked they need to rest and to not further move it, but even that doesn't seem to help. I just want to find the best treatment for my problem. Thank you so much again!

Who do some people get the bear hug back adjustment versus the laying on stomach back adjustment?

Just different preferences for the person getting adjusted and the chiropractor. Also, one of them is more of a distraction angle, wheras the other is more extension angle. Hope this helps.

How do you know the patient has relaxed, and how important is it that they have relaxed, could injury be caused if they aren't relaxed?

Yes severe injury can occur. Think of it like bending a spaghetti noodle. Tensed/uncooked vs relaxed/fully cooked.
      Hope this helped

I asked the question as I'd like to know what chiropractors do to make sure the patient has relaxed. I went to a chiropractors and they did a neck adjustment on me. They asked me to relax, I could not relax, but I think I moved my head towards the chiropractors hands which made them assume I had relaxed, but I had not. She adjusted me. This all happened within a few seconds. The next day I had neck pain and 2 weeks later the pain was so bad I went to A&E to get it checked out where they diagnosed a muscle strain. I still have issues now 5 months later - I have crepitus and also my neck catches when I turn it sometimes. To make things worse - I went to the chiropractors for a lower back injury, there was no issue with my neck, there was no need to adjust my neck. @@deilonhunter8535
