    Good video, Cheyenna! One other reason why we Deaf people have sign names is the fact that we don't want to fingerspell people's names every time we refer to that person, especially if one has a long first name!

    I'm hard of hearing (which btw HOH people can also give out sign names, for people who don't know), but my name is Kathryn, and my sign name is the sign for curly hair but with a K :)

      So a Sign name for a hard of hearing or deaf person is like a nickname for a hearing person ? 👂

    My husband and I both have sign names because we used to babysit a deaf girl. She named my husband, his sign name is how you sign tall in finnish sign language, because he is super tall and that's how the girl just started calling him. And then at one event I also got my name, it's kind of showing that I have long hair 🙂 But I was wondering whether new deaf people we meet will accept our names if they don't know that a deaf person has given them? Should we like explain how we got our names?

      Tudor Miller yup, ASL stems majorly from French Sign Language plus the home sign language used by deaf kids.

    Wow Cheyenna, are you signing left handed? Are you left handed or is there a particular reason that you do? I sign left handed because there are certain signs I cannot make with my right hand due to a weird abnormality.

      You sign with your stationary hand basically the hand you use to write or eat stuff like that

    Very interesting! However, I am sorry I couldn't distinguish the exact sign representing her name among the rest of her speech, or in the sentence where she mentioned it. Could anyone describe for me the sign?

    Hey, have a question. i cant lip read and im not a native english speaker so i wanted to know if youre saying the words while signing and if everybody does that. Because in most of the "signing tutourials" he/she just signs.

    • @lilmamaxyungpapa
      @lilmamaxyungpapa 6 років тому +3

      yeah, she is spelling almost all the words and sometimes you can hear the words that are in subtitles. but her friend (forgot her name) is moving her lips too but it doesn't looks like she is spelling the words. i think it its different and depends on the person

      I know this is old, but for future people I looked it up and I think it's actually that NO ONE, hearing or deaf, is supposed to make their own sign name. It's unfortunate that the way she (or at least the subtitles) said it came off as rude and exclusionary towards hearing people.

  • @wellesradio
    @wellesradio 6 років тому +2

    If you're not deaf and know deaf people but are only just learning sign, I suggest you come up with your sign name quick or they'll make one up for you out of necessity. It won't be mean or anything, but it'll probably be a boring nickname like your first letter and maybe your height or something - like "tall M" or "Mustache J". It's a chance to make your own name, jump on it.

    • @bluestreak711
      @bluestreak711 6 років тому +3

      You are not allowed to make up your own name sign. It has to be given to you by a Deaf individual.

  • @pegaseg70

    I always feel sorry for mute people because they also use sign language, some autistic people do to but I feel like deaf culture doesn't acknowledge the fact that sign language can be used by non-deaf people.
    I was asked by my sign language teacher to sign about myself and even suggest my own sign name.

    • @tudormiller8898
      @tudormiller8898 4 роки тому

      Mute people ? Dude that's offensive to most of us deaf and hard of hearing people. If an individual can't speak then they are non oral. NOT mute. Okay ? Old habits are hard to break from hearing people, obviously. 👂

    • @tudormiller8898
      @tudormiller8898 4 роки тому

      Nobody said that sign language was the preserve of the deaf and hard of hearing community only. But Sign language is very much a part of deaf and hard of hearing culture. Other people and cultures from outside the D&HOH community use thier own sign language to express themselves. No problem.But It's like saying the English should acknowledge that other cultures use English too. Seriously ?

    • @pegaseg70
      @pegaseg70 4 роки тому

      @@tudormiller8898 hi! You seem to have misunderstood my comment. "Sign language can be used by non-deaf people" I am not saying that deaf people are mute (and would never say that) You seem to not know that people that can hear but not speak or produce sound (ie: people born without vocal cords or having damaged vocal cords after an accident or illness, or had to have them removed for issues, having been through a very hard trauma and lost their ability to speak, and these are only examples)
      In most of these cases, we say that the person is mute
      These persons also use sign language to communicate
      Some autistic persons do to
      Sign language is not used only by deaf or hard of hearing persons and I feel like sometimes that is forgotten by everyone, including insurances that do not cover sign language lessons for a person who cannot communicate through speech

    • @pegaseg70
      @pegaseg70 4 роки тому +1

      @@tudormiller8898 to me, sign language is more than any other language and cannot only be assigned to a specific group of people, as it is a way to communicate without using your voice
      While some signs do differ, the language structure is the same and most signs are the same
      I do agree that some autistic persons use their own sign or just a couple to communicate, but that is not the majority
      And English is used in many countries aside the UK and US so yes, acknowledging that there are other English speakers out there with only a few expression and words variantions is necessary
