Awesome news Sam 👍😀👍. The Beat is ultralight. Ironically the Energica was born from Electric race cars and is now going to be an electric race car. How cool is that 👍👍👍🏎️🏎️🏎️
Oh. I didn't watch these because I personally don't care about card but I just watched a video about a honda beat and wondered if anyone made an electric version of it and now it came full circle and now I am gonna follow this project as well!
@@NewZeroland Been riding it for a year now and I have 13.000km on the clock. It has its known flaws but I still like it. Done a few mods to it so far.
Instant torque, more power and less weight: that thing has the potential to be a lot of fun. I hope the range is decent enough to block off the gas addicts!
Congratulations .. it's all going to work out!! . I'm really interested to find out how you will be connecting the motor to the diff. And, how they will be mounted to maintain perfect alignment. This could be really tricky. Next episode?
Thanks Brian! Some kind of coupler that fits on the Energica's shaft and bolts to the diff. It seems like a common thing to do with conversions so I'm not too worried. We have the technology!
Nice job Sam, I think she's going to sneak in under the limit Limbo style, just enough clearance to allow you to put some (small) cases in the back and take Jen out in style. A trip away and a slap up meal at Ye Olde Pie Shoppe 😁
I saw!! I'm excited to see that thing move under electric power. Mine is currently at the shop getting mounts fabricated but I have no idea when my next video will be.
@@NewZeroland I'm absolutely certain yours will be vastly better. I'm also pretty certain he'll finish first, mainly because his jobs are more like building props than building something that you can use every day.
@@gasdive haha thanks! Rich's project is pretty unique, but I'm sad he's only adding 15hp to the car. It seems like a lot of work for such little return. At least double the power!!
Awesome! Always nice to have some wiggle room. I've been contemplating what I'm doing with mine. So looks like the same place I got the Beat from has a $1,200 Hayabusa so it was kinda meant to be. Going simple with a chain driven spool as I'm concerned about a chain driven diff that's not in an oil bath heating up and even though it's a motorcycle engine it's probably going to be pushing some serious power eventually. I mean if you have a 'busa motor you've got to turbo it right?
Yep, still keeping independent rear probably with gen 1 Miata axles, but I'd have to go TorSen if I wanted an LSD back there and since this thing is going to be doing rally racing I'll just deal with it chirping around corners on the pavement. The big thing I'm trying to decide on is building a hardtop roof or importing one since the original soft top is trash.
Sam, just remind us, why is the weight so critical? Does it have to be no heavier than the original ICE weight to qualify as some cheaper-to-tax category of vehicle or something? Or would you not be allowed to use it on the road at all if it were too heavy?
There's a max weight limit to be legal on the road, yeah. It's harder for kei cars because they're so small and don't technically have places to put cargo (extra weight). It's strict, but I'm excited to have a car with double the power AND is lighter than it was originally 😂
Almost a hundred "freedom units" of wiggle room? Nice! "Lighter as an electric than as a gas car" is really how it should be. Electrons shouldn't weigh more than gas. (I know, I know, it's the batteries, but still.)
Yeah man!! And this is with the old motor/battery setup. I'm still hoping to upgrade someday to the new Energica stuff and that'll drop another 45lbs from it, while also increasing power and range.
Completely blows my mind that you could actually complete this thing below 1000 kg. Question: Do you get some kind of badge or certificate to prove the car is underweight so the police won't constantly badger you about the lack of RUC purchases?
Haha great question! I wonder if the weight will be included in the LVVTA compliance reader thing mounted under the bonnet. That would be hilarious. Now I can't wait to get pulled over!
First to the scales, first to tech, first to qualify, first to podium
Bloody marvelous! An unexpected and very satisfying outcome. Onwards!
Yeah woohoo!!
Oh Sam, that’s awesome news. Can’t wait to see the progress.

I just noticed her in the profile pic lol Gen is holding her from flying away off her energica
@@earthwormandruw : O I never saw that before! Thank you for pointing it out!
Any updates?
You could update us with a youtube short if there's not much to talk about..
I just watched the whole series, this thing is going to be amazing!!! I want to do this to my beat one day. Hello from Canada!
Cheers!! Glad you're liking the series so far. It'll be a long time until it's finished, but the next step should be fun.
Looking forward to the installation and fine tuning of this beast
Phew! I was worried there for a minute. You need that buffer; there's always something unexpected that crops up. Good luck at the shop.

I'm just off to bed Sam but really enjoyed the video. Looking forward to the workout in the workshop. Take care from Greater London.
Cheers Gary!
That's awesome!
Like my Kawasaki conversion, I made the bike lighter, yet it has double the power and was cheaper to build that the sticker price of gas version

Me too! I'm excited :D If it gets over 50km of range I'll be happy haha.
Can't wait!
Yay, just a feather and wheels that car. Fantastic to hear. (my guess was 500 by the way :P )
YEEAH BUDDY! ...see you in the next one 🙂
When the money rolls in from this business venture, a carbon fibre hood & top will be next on the menu 👌

If you have the budget, look for some lighter wheels. This will improve overall performance/range.
These are already crazy light.. actually I'll weigh them in a future video.
weight to go Sam!!
Bwahaha thanks!
I'm kinda curious if you add a fan to the battery if it will charge faster being cooler.
Maybe! It would definitely charge at full speed for longer.
