I did a video recently, where I made note of the similarities between the cover of Iron (I-earn) Maiden’s Powerslave album, from 1984, and the cover of Earth, Wind and Fire’s album, All n All, from 1977. I thought it would be fun to check out other examples of bands that were accused of stealing album cover ideas from other bands. Were these parodies, tributes, or ripoffs? Some of them may have been coincidences. Decide for yourself.

The Phil Collins But Seriously cover was done earlier by Peter Hammill in 1983 for his album Patience, even using similar handwriting. What makes it even more a coincidence is that Collins and Hammill were signed to the Charisma label in the 70's with their respective bands, Genesis and Van Der Graaf Generator.

I'm old enough to remember when the Sticky Fingers LP was in store racks back in the day. I thought it was so cool that an actual, working zipper was part of the cover. The protective plastic wrap around the LP was completely torn around the zipper area because people couldn't resist zipping and unzipping it. The cover itself had begun to tear from all the "use." I was very young and completely oblivious to the innuendo going on. My mom came over to where I was and I showed her the cover in all my enthusiasm. She was none too pleased... 🤣😂

My mom had that record. She removed the zipper so it wouldn't hurt the other records. I told her if i was her I would have just put it in the front of the stack. It's okay for one to be out of alphabetical order.

I think it goes without saying that The Beatles Abbey Road cover had the most tributes/parodies of all time. Along with The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s, which Zappa And The Mothers did a complete parody of its entire record sleeve/gatefold a year after The Beatles on We’re Only In It For The Money.

I think the Crue - Shout At The Devil alternate cover is an homage to the Beatles, but we would need the Crue to confirm that fact. On that very album they cover Helter Skelter (though that is from a different Beatles album)

My favourite band Gentle Giant ended their album - the debut one - with the rendition of the British National Anthem. In 1970. 5 years before Queen. Also, there are obvious musical and vague lyrical similarities between the Gentle Giant's 1978's song "Giant For A Day" and Queen's 1991's "I'm Going Slightly Mad". Up to this day I still have no idea whether any members of Queen had ever been aware of the existence of the band Gentle Giant and their works - but still, such are the similarities looking likely like two cases of ripping off.
Speaking of album covers, no doubt at all about GG's debut album's cover being a direct answer to the cover of King Crimson's debut album. To an extent, an antagonist rip-off, if you like.

The Dead Milkmen's album Metaphysical Graffiti is a good parody. It has a cheap toy replica of the LZ cover, and to show that they are deconstructionists, on the back cover, there is a toy building is demolished by a toy wrecking ball attached to toy crane. "Anderson, Walkman, Buttholes, and How!" and " Do the Brown Nose " are standout tracks if you're not one for joke bands. Fun video. Thanks.

The cover of Rancid's "...and out come the wolves." is actually a tribute to Minor Threat's first EP where Ian MacKaye is sitting on a small set of steps with his head on his knees. For Rancid's cover it is Lars Frederiksen doing the exact same pose.

great list, I can't say that all of these ones are necessarily famous or not, but Sloppy Seconds Destroyed was another take on that Kiss cover worth checking out, Cecilia und die Sauerkrauts did a variation of that Herb Albert that was pretty entertaining. Chaos Uk short sharp shock and Michelle shocked short sharp shocked are very similar. I'm pretty sure Miley Cyrus cover for plastic hearts is way too similar to the Plasmatics to be coincidence

Just a few things to say here...
Another one that has a similar pose to the Bjork and Britney Spears album is 2pac's "Are You Still Down - Remember Me?" album
I assume that Courtney Love did not know the difference between an "Ah ha I won" and an "Oh my ..." expression
I think GWAR might have parodied the KISS/Manowar album art
Oh yeah - most single and album artwork to "Weird Al" Yankovic albums are parodies - but that is too obvious

The Earth Wind and Fire album cover was meant to be a cultural statement and was continuous in four frames inside and out. The Iron Maiden lp, though somewhat similar had a demonic image and edge to it. This is in contrast to the positive spirituality that EWF projects.

Again Unlucky Morpheus - Faith and Warfare is Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare. Last Battalion - Obizen is Meshuggah - Obzen. HMHR Club - Squeal Idol Festival is Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1. Though I guess all of them are more on the parody side

Courtney Love getting offended because someone has homages her album cover seems odd, as if she knows absolutely nothing about the culture or history of rock 'n' roll. Many of the earliest rock 'n' roll records were referencing other records, and rock has been doing variations on the same thing ever since.
