How to Laser Engrave a Bamboo cutting board with an 80W Co2 Laser Engraver

In this video we are using our Red/Black 80W Co2 Laser Engraver with an upgraded 80w Reci laser tube, upgraded air assist, upgraded lens, and modified CW-3000 water chiller for maximum flow and integrated alarm output.

What kind of fire extinguisher do you have?
What setting did you use? I've engraved it with the trotec speedy 400, but the engrave was very light or otherwise it didn't burned enough...

Hello, are you referring to the “Ehman” paddle in my laser engraver? If so, I just use something with a straight edge to line up my board so it’s not crooked :)

Nice work on the lazer engraving, if you want a cheaper alternative way to oiling your boards you could use a grapeseed oil. That's what I do with mine and than do a beeswax and grapeseed oil paste to finish them off

How big is the little guide you used to show you the distance between the laser and your item? And do you know where you could buy one? I use to have a 12 mm key but lost it
Hello Katie, my guide is 9mm. It all depends on the lens you purchased. I cut my guides with my laser :) no need to purchase one, just use your scraps.
Great video! Do you find the MacBook Air sufficient for your work needs or would you do a different computer?
Hello Linda. For what I do, make my own files on lightburn, photoshop, etc…I prefer MacBook Air. It does it’s purpose for sure. I don’t see myself needing a different computer at all.
Although, I did get a fibre laser recently and unfortunately it only runs on windows. So i have to use one of our old computers to run that. And having to go between Mac and windows is frustrating haha.

what would my settings be for 50W laser? First time trying a bamboo cutting board. What is considered food grade oil? like Crisco? Thanks for your input. Donna
It’s hard to say what your settings would be, but you could make an educated guess based on power differences of the laser
I replaced my 80w laser tube, and the new tube was much more powerful than the first, so even with the same laser tube, it was hard to find settings.
I recommend taking a test more and running some test settings to find the preferred.
Food grade oil is mineral oil, or butcher block oil.

It was actually a package deal when i purchased my laser from China. So im not quite sure of the specifics.
I see that you are using a macbook air with your omtech. PLEASE can you tell me how you were able to use it? Mine will not talk to eachother. Thank you for the helpful videos.
I don’t own a omtech :) mine is a Chinese black and red laser. I connect to the ruida controller through the network.
on my job we have a laser for cutting plexi and i was thinking to make a cutting board for myself.
don't you have to fill the engraving? now its not flat... isn't this a problem?
Usually when we do these cutting boards, we ask the client if they want engraving on the front or the back. The back is usually selected when the cutting board will be used to cut food on. That being said, we engraved our own personal cutting board on the front, which we use daily. We seal it with mineral oil, and after each use we use a sponge to clean, which cleans out all the grooves from the engraving.

This is a really great video! I see you have a Chinese co2 laser... I have just bought one of these. Do you have grounded it with separate ground like the manual sais or have you just connected it with the normal plug? I'm very worried about being electrocuted. Thank you for your answer🙏🏻 also will be interesting a video about your workspace and you safe precautions
Hello Giorgio,
Technically you should not have to ground the laser engraver past the ground on the power cable, but we have added a ground cable to ours for added Safety.
If you are concerned (and BTW, please stop buying Chinese - there are multiple companies that make quality laser machines right here in the USA)… but back to my point you can always check the resistance between the chassis and the ground prong on the plug to ensure the chassis is properly grounded.
@@oldNavyJZ many of those us companies buy the Chinese lasers in bulk and resell them under their own brand.
Where did you buy your shelf for your chiller and stand for your laser?
Hello! The rolling cart with my chiller is from Costco and the stand for my laser came with it :)
I couldn’t find the exact cart on the Costco website but here’s another alternative:
TRINITY EcoStorage 3-tier NSF Chrome Cart
If you can’t find Costco cart, try “KUNGSFORS” from IKEA. Just double check the dimensions to make sure it will work for you.
How much do you sell the bamboo ones for I just saw this at big lots I bought a different model to practice on , I have the 100 watt red and black laser

It is the same machine as Omtech, but mine is considered Chinese Red & Black. I don’t have the branded label and I imported the machine myself.

I don't :) I buy Master Chef or Vida by Paderno bamboo cutting boards and they come with the rubber corners!
