We used to do this with students many years ago using fine blades or scalpels. Until they decided we couldn't use fine blades or scalpels with students. One tip, start with your dark colours then work to your light colours. This avoids the darkening of colours like we saw in your "subscribe" demo. Black, then red, then white gives a crisper final product.
You earned a subscription for this one. Three days ago I painted over clear acrylic before I peeled the masking off. It was a test peice to see if I could laser, I think it is called a narrative, on the back of acrylic, paint it, then pull off the masking and you're done. Turn it over and you can read the narrative. It looked great but I never thought of taking it to the extent you did. That was brilliant! You just made my brain go into overdrive.😂
Well thank you very much. I do appreciate it!! I’m exactly the same! I’ll find something out and my brain just constantly thinks of other things to do with it. Not always a bad thing 😂
@@MARCAM I do a lot of iterations of an idea before I am satisfied with the outcome. It is not very often I get it on the first try. This is the best retirement hobby I can think of.
Looks fantastic. From a former vinyl signage creator. Pick up a pair of weeding tweezers. It makes easy work of fiddly littlevletters and csvities when weeding thanks for the inspiration can’t wait until my later id delivered😊
Thank you for the advice! Hopefully make it easier as it can be such a pain. Especially doing small pieces. Hope you have fun with it and create some amazing work ☺️
Fantastic video Marc. I’ve liked & subscribed without hesitation. Looking forward to many more of your videos. You’ve also saved me buying lots of different coloured sheets of acrylic & even then you couldn’t really achieve the same end result, particularly with a complex multi coloured design, so thanks a lot.
Great job! Just getting into lasers but looking for a side hustle. This is awesome. You can do the same thing on the back of a mirror and it looks really sharp, especially if you backlight it with LEDs.
I've done something similar using a normal cnc machine (Longmill MK2 30x30) and a springloaded diamond engraving bit (90 gedree tip) to scratch the image onto acrylic but it wasn't as detailed colored like this as I need to remove the protective sheet first to engrave with such a bit. After engraving, I spraypaint loose parts (as I don't have the paper backing, it's hard to spraypaint tiny details) and wipe off the excess paint immediately before it dries up. The paint in the scratches remains in the scratches while the rest is wiped off. I'm considering a CO2 laser but got no room and money atm to buy one. but this is impressive and so detailed. Good job.
Sounds like it was quite a bit more involved with the cnc then. Bet it still looked good mind. You can get co2 lasers quite small these days. The k40 is a nice small desktop machine. The newer machine I’m using at the moment, the Mira 5s isn’t too big of a machine either 👍🏻
I think that piece was just 3mm. You can get bigger sheets from most acrylic online retailers. But try eBay. I’ve found some of the shops on there work out cheaper sometimes 👍🏻
Hi there! thanks for this video! I would have never thought of using CLEAR acrylic to have an end result with color! Just brilliant! But what i'm confused about is, are these engraved or scored? because when I engrave acrylic, leaving the protective layer on, after engraving, the protective layer is completely gone. So does that mean you are scoring? Really appreciate your response, thanks in advance!
Thank you very much :) It’s just a quick, low power score line you need to run with the laser. Just enough to cut through the backing. That then allows you to peel that section away ready for paint 👍🏻
@@MARCAM so i've started my project and my last color is black as well. But i don't recall seeing what you did for the last color black? did you also add a coat of lacquer then the black paint x3 coats? Then did you also spray on a seal coat after the 3 coats of black? so the black color doesn't chip?
@bonniesims2114 yeah a clear coat first, then the black (as many layers as needed) and then a clear coat for protection over the back. Alternatively you can use some clear backing tape to protect if you prefer 👍🏻
I mainly use this to make coloured signs. If you use a good enamel type paint and a quick clear coat over the top then doing key rings should be no problem. I use car paint so if you think how well car paint holds up 👍🏻
Yeah you leave it on. I don’t know about it being toxic mind. It’s advised to cut with the paper on from most suppliers as it helps avoid scratches and marks. I’m fairly sure it’s not a toxic backing, but if you have any info on it being toxic feel free to post it here as it would be interesting to read 👍🏻
Very interesting concept. Why using a clear coat rather than directly painting on the acrylic ? Is it to make the paint bond with the plastic, like a primer? Or is it to make it shinier ? By the way, you gained a follower.
Thank you very much 😊 And I spray a layer of clear just incase any paint does try and bleed under the paper layer. It rarely happens but I just like to be that extra bit cautious. It does help with paint bonding too 👍🏻
you could try frisket (artist quality) masking paper instead of protection sheet of the plexi. Frisket is used in airbrushing, and the quality of the lines will be extra sharp.
I’m confused as to how the other parts, that you have already painted, do not get spray painted by the 2nd/3rd color you spray over the entire piece. Can someone please explain how this is working so incredibly amazing?!! Thanks
Each colour is painted onto exposed parts of the acrylic. So the first part that’s lasered then painted covered the exposed clear acrylic. Those parts are then covered. You then run another pass to expose more clear acrylic which will take another colour on so on etc
Not tried it with a diode laser yet. I think I’ll have to make another video on doing it with a diode as I do get a lot of questions regarding it. Should work though as a diode can burn and cut the backing paper on acrylic 👍🏻
You sure? Seeing it wont do anything to clear acrylic without it being painted first or laying it down on a painted sheet of steel. Would think it would just go through the clear paper and clear acrylic and do nothing @@MARCAM
The laser has no problem cutting through the backing paper. The backing isn’t clear either. But, I’m assuming it would still cut through clear tape (never tried)
I have a CO2 laser which is able to cut clear acrylic without any problem. So I have to test if it will be possible to only cut the protection film on the acrylic without cutting the acrylic itself. But the idee of doing that is great. I have no idea why I didn't had this idea before as it is the same technic I am using when airbrushing lexan bodies for RC cars. They are also being painted from the inside. Before painting you put coats of liquid mask on it and then cut out part by part the regions you are going to paint next. starting with the darkest colour and then going on to the lightest colour one by one.
I'm just starting out in laser engraving so absorbing as many videos as I can and whilst I like your concept there is a much easier and much cheaper way of doing this. I'm well versed in silhouette studio my bread and butter is printing everything from clothing to stickers and the simple way to do this is create the Svg cut the acrylic out then print and cut a sticker to go on the acrylic.. not picking faults I'm enjoying your content I just saw an easier solution :)
Thanks for the input :) You are right, that is a much easier way and it’s something I wouldn’t mind trying in the future. I think I’ll need to invest in a vinyl cutter though to be able to cut out the stickers property 👍🏻
@@MARCAM ah no problem I hope you don't think I was being negative I used the silhouette cameo 4 it's a brilliant machine and the software is free for the basic edition I have the business edition. The only downside with the basic edition it will let you load an Svg but won't re-save as an Svg so you would have to make the design in light burn or xtool etc then load it in to silhouette studio :)
@CraftedCustomCreations great stuff thank you. I design all my stuff in Inkscape so could probably just get away with the free version. I’ll have to check it out for sure 👍🏻
Positioning the sticker perfectly aligned wouldn't be difficult as well? Also, I believe, the colors from the print would eventually fade away. The way he did will last and look "new" for much longer. Am I wrong?
great video. appreciate your patience during the weeding process. was thinking for the smallest bits, based on @ausscuba comment.. maybe use the laser to clear out the first layer 'stuttgart' and do it in black first.. just a little tweak to the process and could save some time and effort.
But is it ok for the laser cutter to cut through the film that is stuck to the acrylic? Isn't it made of vinyl or something that can harm the laser lens when heated? Doesn't it pose a health hazard as well? Or is it made of something completely different?
It’s usually made from polyethylene which is safe to laser. Most companies will use this to protect their acrylic as people will laser cut items and leave this film on to help protect against any scratches.
It’s not the end of the world if you peel the wrong bit. You can just peel all the backing off and mask it again with masking tape. I just find the backing paper to give you a super clean finish and it’s already on the acrylic so makes it easier 👍🏻
It is hard to tell on the video, but the edges don't look very crisp? Did the edge of the tape backing let some paint under? Did the laser melt the acrylic and the resulting melt not come out sharp? Does anyone else see what I think I see?

@beehr4468 it will be fine if it engraves onto the acrylic too as you will be filling with paint. Just try not to go too deep and risk cutting all the way through
I apply it to try and eliminate any possible paint bleed that might happen. It’s very unlikely to happen but I just wanted to be extra careful. Not needed though.
You should be able to do it with the diode, you may just need to make sure there’s a paper backing. Or I’m sure the M1 can also act as a vinyl cutter? That could also be used to cut the backing on the acrylic 👍🏻
What's the deal with the clear coat before colour? Is it a must? Can you make your future videos a bit louder? I watch them on my laptop with 100% volume :D
Clear coat first helps with any paint bleeding through. The volume is too loud if anything. When I listen to it on my phone/ tablet. Makes the speakers crackle 😂
I've seen clear used on wood to prevent bleed/creeping but never seen it done for acrylic. I think if you remove all plastic masking and use medium or high tack transfer tape you may not need the clear coat for acrylic.
