Yes! Finally, someone here with a true fact. All the people down in the comments are saying "ooh this whole scene is improvised because Will Smith never had his dad in his life," when that isn't true at all. He's a good effing actor.
Janiera Turner-Frazier actually the reason why he couldn’t speak was because Will wasn’t even speaking from the script but from his heart.Uncle Phil didn’t even know what to say
I agree. The first time I saw this I made it through almost the whole scene without a sniffle. But when it showed him hugging uncle Phil in the background, slowly zooming in on the statue, that broke me.
I'm defetly uncle Phil to my adopted daughter. She was mentally and phisicly abused by her bio parents. Well I will make Satan's butt and nuts pucker if anyone tries to hurt her. Luckily I was able to break her shell and she's almost fully recovered only the scars remain
Last time i met my dad was in a fucking supermarket; he gave me his number, I called, he never picked up. But my mom, my brother and my sister are there for me so fuck him. To all those like me, we don’t need him. There are many people more important than him in my life; I’ll piss on his grave and defend my family to the death
He was actually upset due to it also being a thing that happened to him in his life so he was actually emotional in that scene causing Phil to hug him like he did cause was upset about his father leaving pretty crazy to think about but nonetheless he did an amazing job on that scene
"Fine Phillip! You win. You the man. You a better man than me. You happy?" Uncle Phil's face says it all in that scene "you think that's what this is about?"
This scene makes me cry every time. My parents divorced when I was 4 and I didn't see or hear from my dad again until I was 17. Fortunately I had an amazing Step-father that took me and my sister in and treated us as if we were his own children. He taught me everything I needed to know in life and when I was down and lost everything he was there to help me back up. He passed away in June this year from cancer and he is sorely missed. Pop I think about you everyday and if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be the man I am today. Thank you for all you taught me and showing me tough love when I needed it. You wasn't just some man my mom married. You took on a responsibility that wasn't yours and you did it with no questions asked. You were my father when you didn't have to be. I can only pray to be half the man that you were. I love you Pop.
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm happy you had such an influential father figure in your life. I lost my dad two years ago and I still miss him dearly, so I know the pain. But, the lessons and the memories they gave us will last forever.
Hit hard for me too...Lou is supposed to be his Father and he decides to put his own selfish needs first and leave Will hanging....AGAIN. Uncle Phil was the only true Dad that Will could ever have.
@@torijohnson6943 the point of the og comment was that kids never should feel unwanted in the first place, not that they shouldn't be allowed to ask why they are not wanted.
Ya I feel his pain my father walked out the day I was born then died on my 5 th bday guess that's y I turned out like I did 9 yrs in prison had to learn how to be a man behind prison walls
@@joshuaterry4076 Exactly, Giving birth doesn’t make a father, Being there and providing for your child is what makes a father, and Uncle Phill did all that.
The fact that Phil didn't even hesitate to hug Will after he started breaking down really shows that he genuinely wanted to be a dad to Will. Like, "Fuck Lou. I'll give you the best life possible."
“The shock of what happened or the ache of what never will.” The pain of my father walking out and all the years and hopes he would show up but never did… this gets me every time. 😢
My dad is one of those parents. Took me having my own kids to see that he never loved me. Not even a little. I could never treat my kids the way he treated me. He beat the fuck out of my mom and I. Made me everything he’s not though so silver lining.
If you listen closely you can hear a women sob at 3:46... Most of them must have gotten emotional, because the actors knew how to display real emotions here. They surely became their characters.
Sorry to break the magic of television, but there's a production guy stood in front of the audience, holding up a card, telling them when to cheer, when to whoop, when to laugh, when to stay silent.........it's not organic.
@Irom Mqn A quick google search gives plenty of results to the opposite: Anyone can be a "father," but it takes a special kind of man to step up and be a "dad"
The thing that hurts the most is when the most happy and most charismatic people who always make you laugh and be happy are the ones who are sad. Just cuts deeper.
I think I remember hearing something about the actor portraying Will’s father in the scene. When the actor walked off the set after saying “it was good seeing you”, he broke down crying. He said that as a father himself, he could never imagine walking out on his own children. It goes to show how deeply emotional this scene is
By choosing to be a decent person you have already grown beyond them. You are worthy of love, your parents simply weren't worthy enough to give it to you. And while that's sad, it's THEIR fault, not yours. You were the one who was hurt and still chose kindness.
Because of how legendary this scene is, especially on youtube, a really damn good scene earlier in the episode tends to get overlooked, which is when Uncle Phil is ranting about Lou and Will and Vivian haven't turned on him yet. "TO HELL WITH YOUR FATHER! He's not doing this for you, he's doing it for himself. Wake up, Will, this is the same man who didn't think enough of you, TO PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE!"
nothing ever is black and white though, there are valid reason not wanting to raise a kid, also if it was an accidental conception despite protection on all sides and the woman keeps it against the man's will he should be free to go and no judging on my side, his wish not to be a father was clear from start to finish and in the 21st century we have enough medical progress to not make it happen
@@ZetsubouZolo That is a more nuanced look at it, but for simplicity's sake we don't get much of an idea of any of that kind of stuff in the episode. All we know is Lou got scared, didn't feel ready to be a father, and bolted. The thing is, Lou had options, he could have picked up the phone. He could have sat down and actually talked to his son about leaving instead of trying to bullshit him. But that's not what the story is about. It's about someone who SHOULD try harder for their family, and just won't, and sadly that DOES hit hard for a lot of people who know how that feels.
I asked my teacher if my best friend would ever come back me and him was being bullied he got it harder than me he would go take walks still come back mad I hugged him when he came back because I know how much we both need it he left the school 15 minutes away I walked into a new school he was standing by the door and hugged me and I left my other best friend she gave me a tighter hug cause she thought we was never going to see each other again she cried in my arms she loved me enough to make me seat beside her in class she grabbed my hand while we was working and held it
One thing most people don’t talk about: the Actor playing Lou and his performance, he plays the deadbeat dad SO perfectly. You can see it all over his face that he is only concerned for himself and just wants everyone to go away and stop asking things of him, I get all of that just from his body language. Very powerful performance.
His name is Ben Vereen - he’s a luminary of American theatre (2 Tony nominations, 1 win) and has also received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his TV work as well…he is so subtle and emotive, it’s a masterclass every time he performs
More than that, it's obvious that Lou can tell Will isn't buying his excuse and responds by piling on further lies. Beyond being a deadbeat, he's particularly contemptible in that he has no intention of following up, but he's too insecure to leave Will unless he can (even if briefly) convince him that he's not abandoning him again. When he gets called by his first name, Lou tries to come up with something he can say to leave with as much ego intact as he can, but he gives up, retreating from the accusatory glare and overall discomfort in the air. Vereen does an excellent job of portraying this, reacting to Smith's body language and tone.
The sad part is so many people (myself included) didn't get to have a Dad or an uncle Phil. But, what I did have with this show. It showed me what I should've had and I'm grateful to know about that. Otherwise, I would'nt have known. Kids deserve a parent. If nothing else, they deserve to have a teacher of their own (a parent).
You butchered this it’s “First thing first Rest In Peace uncle Phil, for real, ya the only father that I ever knew get my bitch, pregnant ima be a better you.”
Most of you don't know. So let me tell you... The script was till he passed Uncle Phil. But He was in a character where he couldn't stop himself and director said pause or cut. He keeps going and going and finishes this great scene with an amazing grappling act. One of the finest scenes of this series.
Every dude that grew up without a dad feels that pain. They may pretend they don't care but we know the truth. You see other dudes chilling with or talking about their dads and it's a gut punch.

The guy playing Lou was struck deep too. IMDB said that once he got off screen, he started bawling as well. An IMDB post said one of his personal friends is a crew member on the show and said he is completely opposite than what we see here.
My mother left but I was left with a great father that raise me and show me to be a real men . I talk to my mother now after years of absence .I learned from this and I show my kids love
You can hear the other actors and actresses in the back crying, that's how powerful this scene is. Edit; for those of you asking " where" and saying " no you can't" listen to when they're hugging, and listen closely to the background.
At 3:44 you can hear a cast member in the background weep. That was definitely not scripted. This was the most powerful scene in any early 90's sitcom. It still makes me tear up.
@@clinterception are you stating that both Will Smith and the writer have confirmed that the woman crying in the background was scripted? Where is this confirmation at then?
The guy that played his dad actually cried off set along with others he stated not only was he happy he got that chance to do that part but he was proud of Will and how powerful the scene felt
yep, it takes a toll. My father was an abusive alcoholic and told me that he wants nothing to do with me and hasn't spoken to me since I was 14. I'm 26 now. I made a lot of mistakes growing up. But it hurts deep, deep inside to hear your father tell you he never wants to speak to you again.
@@bigfanofdong I pray that God heals your heart from the pain that your father caused. It wasn’t your fault and never was your fault!! Jesus will be your father!! That’s why I am determined to never ever let my child say that I was never there for her!!
It is a shame that we live in a modern generation where people on the internet said *fatherless* as an insult. That phrase needs to be put down for good because these people never seen this scene before and it hits home for anyone that didn’t have a father like him.
The fact that Lou's only response after Phil tells him off is "Fine, you're a better man than me, you happy?" really puts his priorities into perspective.
I always feel like Uncle Phil was close to punching him after he said that. I'm furious whenever I hear Lou say that and I can only imagine how mad Uncle Phil was.
I sympathize with you and all who have had those issues. Honestly on the other hand I always have had a present biological father and even so this still hits me in the feels. Will Smith crushed this.
You don't have to have experienced a father like this to be touched and saddened at a human level. Never doubted a second my dad loved me and was there for me but I cry watching this, no matter how many times I see it. Very powerful. Wish it was not real life for so many.
Ben Vereen stated in an interview that he broke into tears himself after walking out the camera shot to leave Will. Vareen, a father himself, couldn't imagine doing that to his children.
This scene gets me every time. I had an amazing father who was present and loving right until he drew his last breath. It breaks my heart that what I had is not the norm for so many others.
“Will is not a coat that you hang in the closet then pick it up when you’re ready to wear it.” Exactly. You can’t pick and choose when you want to be in your child’s life. They need you from day 1. I’m glad both my parents were there for me growing up and are still here now
Truth, yes my parents divorced when I was 9 yrs old, but one thing my father didn't do was disappear, to the point, I am his only child. He could've had other children, but he never saw the need for having multiple children with different women. So he stayed focused on me. I'm 29 now and still daddy's little girl. 'Im grown, but still a child'
That's MF'ing Ben Vereen. The "actor" my ass. Ben Vereen! Google him since it seems that you don't know. "Charlie Sheen. Ben Vereen. Shrink to the size of a lima bean."
Especially given that wills reaction wasn’t even scripted. I know the actor who played his dad cried and felt so bad of him afterwards too cuz of the fact that will wasn’t even acting anymore, he was sincere in this.
Having a drug addict parent is worse than having none especially when they take the aggression on their kids, id rather not have father at all than grow in hostile environment and grow up angry myself. Live fast die young lifestyle.
this episode first aired right after my parents got divorced. It was rough and this episode perfectly encapsulated how I felt my relationship with my father would end up like. It’s message is still poignant
Yes and it is even harder to be a father later in life. Being a parent is hard stuff anyways but being it like never being a kid to a parent....it's not funny.
lol at everyone who keeps saying “it wasn’t acting, his real father did that to him” Never happened guys, his father was very much apart of his life. He addresses this seen specifically in an interview about how he just got very into the role and felt real sympathy for people who go through this. It’s phenomenal acting.
Ppl have this narrative that when something sad happens in a sitcom it's for real and not acting. It's gotta be annoying for these ppl that have really honed their acting skills to get to that point.
My dad abandoned me before I was born. I first met him at the age of 13, but after a month, he left for good again. Whenever I see this scene, I always motivate myself by saying it's only going to make you stronger and a much better man than he will ever be. I'm an adult now, and tbh I am better off without him.
Ben Vereen (Lou Smith) admitted that after Will said, “You too...Lou”, as soon as he walked out the front door he broke down crying. Such an amazing scene.
Even though it wasn’t real, thousands of people saw it and felt it real in their own lives, and thousands more knew for sure that there were plenty out there it was real for.
@Kiera Anderson Thank you. I’m sure we could make good friends. Instead of having a dad, I give back expressing myself narrating on my channel. 10 likes in a week, wow.
When I was 14 years old, my father abandoned me and my mother. It was 1974. I literally ran after his car as he drove away, screaming and begging for him to come back. My mother had a nervous breakdown after he left. I lost both parents when he left. I'm 61 years old now, and I still remember that night. If I was queen of the world, I'd find a way to force dads to not break their children's hearts.
Shouldn't have watched this or read your post. I'm 54 sitting here trying not to cry. I watched the biggest, strongest, most gentle, loving Dad you could wish for die bit by bit, eaten away by cancer. He was just under 90lbs when he died. I was 14. Why is it some of the most horrible, evil people, I met live to be old, yet my parents both died in agony, both hard working, respectful, decent, loving people ?
Shit hits hard. My dad tried to walkout when I was 9 months old. He succeeded in leaving 5 years later after my brother was born. I read the emails between him and his new lady, and him and my mom saying all this terrible things you'd expect. How she shoulda aborted us, how we'd be failures, and more stuff that isnt fit for UA-cam comments. I was 25 but I never felt more unwanted in my whole life. "To hell with him" Amen to that. I feel these feels.
I wish I could say my mom was a hero in this. She wasnt. I took beatings for her and my sisters. Because men protect the women. He was an adult so the only thing I could do was become vicious and use weapons. If I coulda killed him I would have. I was 6 when he left.
I stopped hoarding weapons when I was 19 but that viciousness will never go away. I cant describe fighting an adult as a child. Its like fighting a god. They are so strong and fast. Nothing you can do seems to hurt them. Its terrifying, like picking a fight with an earthquake or hurricane. I cant even really give advice on this, those who need it cannot read yet but I'll relay the advice I gave myself: Swing hard, swing fast, and never give up, ever.
Jarthen you're more of a man than your scumbag father ever was. I mean no disrespect to you or your mother but that man doesn't deserve the titles of "dad" or "man". A man who puts his hands on a woman or child like that doesn't deserve those titles. A man who talks about his kids like that doesn't deserve those titles.
Him saying you would be a failure is a way of projecting his own insecurities. Deep down, he knows he is a worthless piece of shit that no one will remember when he eventually dies. You are already 100x the man he couldn’t even hope to be.

Uncle Phil is the best.

this scene is my life. i'm 35 and still trying to be a decent person knowing that both of my parents didn't want me. its horrifying.
By choosing to be a decent person you have already grown beyond them. You are worthy of love, your parents simply weren't worthy enough to give it to you. And while that's sad, it's THEIR fault, not yours. You were the one who was hurt and still chose kindness.
I love how Phil cut off Will's father when he was making excuses about being afraid. There's no excuse to not raise your child.
Agreed. While fatherhood may seem like a scary approach in life, you can’t run away from it.
Honestly parenthood is a very scary part of life but life will literally kick your ass harder than raising a kid

Even his reaction after Will calls him Lou.
Legendary Ben Vereen …. Amazing on any stage

The sad part is so many people (myself included) didn't get to have a Dad or an uncle Phil. But, what I did have with this show. It showed me what I should've had and I'm grateful to know about that. Ben Vereen (Lou Smith) admitted that after Will said, “You too...Lou”, as soon as he walked out the front door he broke down crying. Such an amazing scene.
Yeah it was becuase he thought of his own children saying that to him .
That was a emotional scene!
He wasn’t the only one crying apparently. I didn’t know this until people pointed it out that Karyn aka Hillary was also crying.
Lisa Matay that’s amazing.

You can even hear the crew crying behind the scenes at the end. Such a powerful scene.
Yep that was Karyn Parsons crying in the background
I think we can all agree that UNCLE Phil has been more a FATHER to Will than that Deadbeat!😒
This is one of the best scenes in the entire show!!
Even though it wasn’t real, thousands of people saw it and felt it real in their own lives, and thousands more knew for sure that there were plenty out there it was real for.
You can hear a girl crying in the background.
How come he don't want me, man?
*Doesn't**
Scharlarntz - That’s not what Will said in the show. 🙄
@@richerDiLefto it is
Gets me every time!
Blankfaceman - No it isn’t. It was “don’t want me” and I was responding to a grammar nazi.
“How come he doesn’t want me man?”
That one line hurts…😔
Uncle Phil's face at 3:27. That's genuine
And the hug is real. This is an atom bomb for people like me who didn’t grow up with a dad.
@Kiera Anderson Thank you. I’m sure we could make good friends. Instead of having a dad, I give back expressing myself narrating on my channel. 10 likes in a week, wow.
@Kiera Anderson I was however raised by my grandad and my mother both of whom raised me to be a gentleman.
News years Day, a bottle of single Malt, and whinge.
@@Chris66able I mean, it's biology. Cancer, other diseases, etc.

The way he’s fighting the tears with anger throughout the exchange until they finally win in the end…chills
02:20 Phil's line "it's all right to be angry" is one of the most underrated lines in this scene
I agree
He was probably a failure who felt that way about himself ... it s ok man
Him saying you would be a failure is a way of projecting his own insecurities. Deep down, he knows he is a worthless piece of shit that no one will remember when he eventually dies. You are already 100x the man he couldn’t even hope to be.
"Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a DAD."
-Clark Kent(Tom Welling; SMALLVILLE)
Lou is a father to Will, but he ain't no DAD.
"He may have been your father boy, but he wasn't your daddy!"
I like " Any jackass can get a woman pregnant, but only a man can be father." better.
@@TheRunthis I had not realized that the Smallville writers must've used a common line to come from the character of Clark Kent. LOL!
For being a comedy this show sure did pull at the heart strings.
