This scene proves underneath all the polite and proper manners, Uncle Phil was an underdog who worked hard and hustled harder to pay for law school, left the streets behind him and never looked back so his family didn't have to. No matter who you are, he is and always will be one of the classic examples of a male role model.

What you said, is my father to a T. My father and his brothers were street guys growing up. Some of his brothers still in and out of jail, a couple of his brothers just regular ol hood guys.
My father is a lawyer (retired now). I remember I was 12. I was shooting craps. He didn’t kind certain “hood”things; as he thought it taught me about life.
He saw us shooting, a couple of the dudes were older, like 14-15, and actually lived in the projects. I was friends with them because I hung out the ere with my cousins. So, my father sees us shooting. The guys were like “oh snap here comes your dad”. My father was like “ y’all keep playing. Nothing wrong with a little craps as long as y’all keep it fun. Just need my son real quick. He pulled me to the side and said, “you shouldn’t play things you don’t know what you’re doing. This kid has doctored dice”. I said “what’s that mean, daddy?”. He said finish up and get home. I’ll show you.
I get home, he has dice at the kitchen table. He says let’s play, and I’ll shoot. I said ok. He stops me. He said, “mistake #1. You didn’t even touch these dice. You just let me bring my own dice, you didn’t roll them, you didn’t inspect them. Since you said go ahead, put your penny up”. Daddy continued to roll 7 or 11 7 straight times. He stops and asks, “you done losing your money?”. I said yes sir.
He then teaches me about hustling. He showed me how he did it by filing and smooothinf out the corners, but he answer showed me other ways. He then taught me to never, ever not check out the device, be it dice, playing pool, etc. he then told me to always ask the rules because each hood has a different set. Get it stated. And, then he taught me NEVER take your eyes off the device, and don’t pull out your money. Keep your winnings and losses to yourself. You should be able to memorize how ouch you’re holding. So no need to bring it out, and NEVER keep ALL your money in the same spot. Break it up. Put some in your underwear, shoes. That way, if someone were to stick you up, they get what they only saw you win and they don’t get the rest.

I always liked the episode of Family Matters where a bully is about to beat up Urkel and Eddie, after ignoring and belittling Urkel all episode, shows up to save him. And this was later season stuff, Darius McCray was at least 6-4 and 220 pounds and had horrifically outgrown his kid character. Needless say, it didn't go well for the bully.

It has been years since I have seen this show. I wasn't even a huge fan when it was originally out. But as soon as he walked into that pool hall I thought one thing. Uncle Phil hustled pool in college. Why did I think this? Because back when this show was in syndication college guys hanging out in the pool hall was a standard thing for people like me. Never named my cue though. Probably should have now that I think about it.
But pool and darts. Many a evening spent honing those two skills.

The true father of tv. He never disappointed and always had his family back. Never reveal your strengths. Take note, especially to protect family no matter the situation. No violence just skill. Lots of lessons in this show.

You've got to _love_ material like this. It's the same kind of thing that makes _Dirty Rotten Scoundrels_ such an awesome movie.
You set out to carve out a niche for yourself as a con artist, and a string of successes lead you to believe you'll never be bettered. You con a series of marks that seem pretty easy. Then it turns out, one of those marks was a hands-down better con artist than _you;_ so much better that they made you target them, and _you_ ended up losing money.
