It's the fastest Tiguan ever! (Volkswagen Tiguan R 2022 review)

- Is this the Volkswagen Tiguan you’ve been waiting for? For years, we thought the Tiguan R would be a five-cylinder. Instead, the Cupra Formentor got a five-cylinder turbo overseas, while the Tiguan R uses the same engine as the new Mk 8 Golf R: a turbo four-cylinder making a very decent 235kW of power (315 hp). It has the same cool twin-clutch rear differential as the Golf R…but without drift mode. So, is the new Tiguan R the perfect fast family chariot or should you buy a Golf R wagon? Or spend more on an Audi SQ5 or BMW X3 M40i?
In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, deputy editor Nathan Ponchard conducts a full and independent first review of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan R sports SUV.

Chasing Cars is Australia's most independent source of new car reviews, car industry news, comparisons and car guides. We give you a critical look at every new car you should consider! - Авто та транспорт
I have owned one of these for nearly 3 months.A fun functional car. This review is the most accurate and on the money that reflects what this car delivers. Spot on!
Do you reckon the ride is too harsh for the passengers?
It's fun to drive, all the power , speed and space you need .This car does not look high performance but your quad exhausts give it away .Fuel economy is great, the harder you push the better it gets, averaging
7.6 currently. I'm impressed after 6 months owning one.
What's it like drive day to day? Is the comfort level the same as the 162 R line on the 20" wheels?
Ive drove the golf r and tig r back to back today… after owning every “ performance “ mk of golf over the years besides the mk1 gti I switched to a tiguan 162 last year . You could argue im getting old which is true but I found the Tig R a better all round package and did everything better then the Golf R doing the things that it will spend most of its life doing. Sure the Golf R on the limit is on another level but unless you’re on a track day the Tig is a better all round package. I did put my money where my mouth is and expecting delivery in November ;)
You got it yet?
Ticks all the boxes for our family... only thing is making sure the wife keeps her squeaky clean driving record hahaha!
Beautiful looking and imo best dressed of all the R models launched this year. Fingers crossed that we pick up ours next week. Thanks for the in-depth review Nathan.
You are right, it ticks all boxes for a family. we just booked allspace elegance with pano roof.
Hey mate, I test drove one this weekend, I have had a quote of 87k fully loaded. Could you please tell me how much did you paid yours?
@@naresh4768 just under 80k fully loaded. but this was almost 6 months ago.
Can’t wait to get mine , great review 👍🏻
Hope you enjoy it!
Is there a website where I can buy OEM parts for the R and equip it to my US R-line?
This car will be huge with aftermarket mods that’s for sure can see this car being hugely popular in second hand market !
what's your reason to this conclusion?
@@chuanpi922 reason being some people will want to buy it as a family car and still want performance, very easy to get power out of these cars just with a tune and still drives like oem.
Damn I wish we got this in Canada. We only have the tiguan LWB "R-line" which is just trim.
How does this compare to the Cupra Formentor VZx?
Gee, Nathan, you are absolutely nailing your reviews at the moment! I’m staggered, I drive a 1999 Jaguar XKR..... I’m staggered this thing is as fast as my beloved old glove!!!
Thanks David!
It’s actually faster than your XKR, which is a beautiful Jag. I think 25 years later would see your Jag marginally slower now.
@@vc8160 Indeed. Age always wearies even the best of them. But you get attached to them over time and can’t bear to part with them…
Is this better than the tucson highlander and kia sportage and skoda kodiak. Would love a 2022 review of skods kodiak versus tiguan
I've been counting the days ever since I slapped down some dosh at my VW dealer last September, I was told today it will hit Melb. Oct 26 but the date is fluid - I didn't want the HK. Can't wait to head off for a drive through the Black Spur or along the Great Ocean Road.
Sounds fun!
Keen to join the line, which dealer did you use/recommend in Melbourne or surrounds?
@@eddyjackson1000 Essendon VW tried to price gouge wanting $85.999 with the HK - Brighton Quoted just on $82,000 for the same car.
I ended up at Brighton VW, without the HK system and it came in at $80k. and no fairy tails about delivery times.
I've been told mine arrives in 2 weeks. The car is in the country however VW Australia won't release any until all the press and media launch is done. Did you get roof also for 80k?
@@zdaher NO roof
When is this coming to the US?
‘Accoutrement.’! Haha!
Mr Ponchard is the best car dude this side of Jason Cammisa.
Ok. Maybe it’s a tie for entertainment.
Love your work.
Thanks!
Excellent review. I have a 2017 Rline 162 and I wondered why anyone would stump up $77k on road for a higher tuned 2 ltr turbo but now I can see there is a lot more to it. Still... at that coin... it's a lot for any Tiggy
This is so obsolete. Lovely Americans. 2 Liter engines can push out force, that 3+ liters could only do. Look at the a45s. Nowadays you have to compromise a little sound, but that's not only because of the 4 cyls. It's because of regulations in Europe. I love the old 4 or 5 liters.. But it's Mechanic is obsolete. Bad for enviorment, gas mileage,..
Another argument: it breaks. No. That's because you are not required by law to maintain it like in Europe and your mechanics have often no clue about modern engines and the higher tech behind it. It's completely diffrent in Europe. I had a 4 Liter amg e class.. And now a 2liter cla shooting break. Never had any issues.. Only standard maintance. If I drove with a Ford 100k miles or a cla, I see that the building quality is way higher and the parts like the adaptive shock absorbers are ok even then.. With the focus or Fiesta there is no chance you get that far without changing some parts. We drive much faster.. We have all 4 seasons. Salty roads.. Etc.. If you know how to maintain you have real quality. Even at lower price classes like the standard a class. America has also great cars. Don't get me wrong. I only wanted to show you that we are required by law to check the car by a govt. Checked workplace and they are really, really strikt. Even a little rust, you have to change things. Safety is the most important thing here. And: you can't change it yby yourself or in a garage at your friends house.. Even tuning is forbidden for most parts or you have to get it checked and pay more insurance or taxes for every horsepower more! So.. Im done now. Thank you for your time.
Go and price up a current 162 and come back to me
how’s its off road performance? are you not going to tell us?
How I wish we would get this in the states. 😭😭😭😭
Why no exhaust sound in this video?
Stelvio Sport or Veloce must come close ?
I have the 162 kw 2017 r line, smooth fast and dynamic. I'm not sure 75 k fkr thr tiguan r Is a but steep, but that is the car market these days
Just got ours. Replaced our 2013 Subaru Forester XT premium. Loved the turbo on the Forester. Subaru lost a lot of customers removing the performance from their Forester range. This ticks all the boxes and will sell like hot cakes. Nothing compares in this price range.
Our forester XT 2013 was absolute rubbish. Or even a performance suv, even though it was turbo charged with a crap CVT. I mean a rav 4 hybrid has the same performance. Ask me how I know when one beat me off the lights.
The Tiguan R is even quicker than the fastest STI Subaru made. Subaru has not invested in performance for the last 15 years. They are dying a slow death!
It will be an interesting comparison between this and the Cupra Ateca that’s coming shortly!
True, though Ateca is arguably a segment smaller… this will go up against Formentor 228kW AWD!
Nice review! R-Line has 20-inch rims though.
True, thanks.
I wish we could get this in the US
And there will be one year wait time for this ! In Australia, cars like RAV4 have 14-16 months wait. Hell even Camry has 6 months wait time. What a shame
Demand and supply be like that sometimes.
@@chasingcars so its a bad time to buy a car, you're paying more than
MSRP
@@shubhamgoswami5221 There will always be people who can pay extra just to get something "now". With the current issue on microchips, most car brands have a long waiting period, specially if its a popular one. I went to VW dealership yesterday to check on this R and was told its coming in a week or two. I was told, they will get 4, one for the showroom/demo and 3 to a person who ordered it last year. There is no limit on how many you can order apparently, but this person is smart in my opinion cause s/he can sell it for more than the driveaway price and I'm sure there will be takers instead of one year wait.
@@Leo-ei2il definitely, he can get a mark up of 5k easily, making it 15k profit. How can I pre-order the Mazda mx-60 which will be launched in December. There’s no option on the website
Too bad no USA 🇺🇸 version.
Watching from Ireland
Would have preferred painted wheel arches. Unpainted is reminiscent of off-road look. Too bad there's no fan speed control for the rear compartment or Brembo brakes. Also, the steering wheel controls should be backlit when they're tuned on.
Is it available in America?
I was so interested to hear about the ride comfort of the Tiguan on the 21" wheels but unless I missed it you didn't mention it at all. How is it on our shit Sydney roads? Is comfort still jarring like the hatch transferring small sharp undulations and expansion joints into the cabin and up through the seat? I find a lot of these small cars today so overly firm they become tiring around town as a daily my wife's Cerato GT case in point.
It is in my opinion very comfortably
Tom here. I drove the Tiguan R over Easter after this track review was filmed. Pretty firm, in short. Not crashy or poor ride, but noticeably stiff, which you'd expect on R suspension and 21-inch wheels.
@@chasingcars Hey Tom nice to hear from you mate love your work.. Thanks so much for the reply, bit of a shame really especially when I see your glowing reviews of the adjustable dampers in the golf gti and the huge amount of adjustment and comfort they provide.. You'd think most would prefer the Tiguan R to err on the side of comfort considering that for 99.9 percent of its life it'll be used for family duties and commuting.. Thanks again for answering..
It’s a press release negative comments not allowed 😉
I drove it today and was expecting it to be terrible, I don’t know how they did it but it rides as nice maybe even a little better then my 2021 Rline on 20’s
Great review. I currently have a 2013 Audi SQ5 with 21’ wheels and 100k on the clock. Bi turbo V6 TDI. This was has been well looked after and I have no issues with it,
Back in 2013 it was a new concept of car. This is the longest car I have ever kept and have never felt the need to move on. I am currently thinking of the Tiguan R, RSQ3 or keep the old SQ5.
Interested to know Chasing cars thoughts.
Love these types of vehicles. all the family practicality you need but with a bit of a fun edge to it.
There's definitely appeal here.
It is not fun to drive at all. You would need the Golf R to have some fun.
@@jimj2683 Yes but if you also have to haul around kids and all all there stuff a hatchback isn't as practical.
So it's that compromise between the practicality you need and the fun you want.
@@ryant2568 Then get a Golf Variant...
@@jimj2683 you could sure. I personally like having an SUV, as someone with 2 young kids I can tell you it makes a difference.
Sigh....when is this coming to Canada? Come on Common Wealth Partners!!
I would attempt to buy this in an instant if it were to come to the US. But I literally just went to a VW dealer today who informed me they had absolutely zero allocations, which means it's not coming soon. I don't understand why. Sporty SUVs are hot. I love sporty cars but need some extra ground clearance due to my job. It would be a no brainer for me. I can't be the only one.
And to rub salt in an already open wound, the top spec Tiguan is sorely underpowered.
I may be wrong but I don't believe volkswagen has any plans to bring the tiguan r to the US or at least not any time soon.
man, you can get Macan S for the same price, Tiguan pricing is way too much
Both diesel variants are doing reasonably well , surprisingly . The main concern with any petrol variants are they can't use ULP 91 regardless due to being fitted with a Petrol Particulate Filter .
No PPF in the Golf R Hatch and Tiguan R at launch due to chip supply shortage.
Can't use 95 either and a bad batch of 98 will see you in strife also...
@@michaelk1051 98 is preferred, 95 is OK. 91 is definitely not recommended for any Euro
No PPF in Tig R or R hatch. R wagon has PPF and +20Nm
@@chasingcars VW have said that PPF's will be in all Euro sourced vehicles here likely by Yrs end . They are on the countdown to Australia adopting Euro 6 in Jan 2024.
I was thinking of buying it but the new generation is coming in 2023, so I’ll wait
Crazy to think that in 2023, the Tiguan Mk II will be seven years old. Nothing super firm about a new model yet, though.
Why is this not available in North America?!?
Why are they for sale for 95K? Have they gone up 30K in one year? Or are dealers just insane. I thought something was wrong when I saw that price.
How can i get this in usa
When is VW going to replace the engine cover which has been removed dure to it melting against the turbo ?
VW is a car from hell. Breaks too much
Such a bad time to buy any car, You're paying a surplus, things like harmann Karden stereo are extras and manufacturers are skipping on things like wireless chargers plus the waiting periods after all this extortion.
Just as my 162TSI R lease comes due.. oh, bugger. 😜
My next car
I WISH the US would get this car..
On my short list
Wonder if they'll bring an Allspace R
Possibly but it’s pretty late in the model’s lifecycle to still have an Allspace R up their sleeve
The current offerings from VAG group brands are underwhelming and the same can be said for their customer service. The Tiguan R looks really good but BMW X3 gets my money in this segment.
Drive away price is actually $83,500 with roof and sound package.
Driveaway prices vary state-to-state. Best to check the configurator with your post code.
@@chasingcars Even with the correct postcode a fully optioned Tiguan R with roof and Harmon Kardon comes to $81,649 drive away but dealers are still charging $83,500 non negotiable
Got it as website price with the two options at Alto Blacktown. They also have the option (in house/dealer) for black trim. They will repaint the wheels in black and wrap the chrome bits. They have one black colour as demo if you want to check it out.

I have a R iine now
That smoothed designed front end does not fit the chiseled straight lined back end in all honesty.
I don't mind it TBH
T-Roc R review please!
When it arrives, we sure will!
The only thing I’m not fussed on in this vehicle is it’s requirement for 98 octane, other than that it’s a winner I reckon
I don't think so. More like 91. Besides, it doesn't go higher than 93. At least no in the states. Although North American doesn't get the Tiguan R, we still get the Golf R with the same engine.
Not in USA😢😢😢
Ok just looked at a tyre price.. $700 plus each… ouch.. i love me a Vw but roads r shit out my way and potholes r everywhere .. shout out to fellow Silverdalians..
It's a nice looking mid-size SUV, but it's still just another mid-size SUV. And i just cannot get excited about it.
🔥
Idem to formentor and ateca cupra
Yet in America they give us underpowered garbage. Why doesn't VW offer a performance SUV in America?
What is the point of sports SUV's they cant handles like sports cars and they don't go great off-road, so your sacrifice better handling for being higher off the road, the R wagon would be a smarter decision if you want space and power,
For 80k DA why not add 20k more and get a Rsq3? Same dimensions with a smaller boot but with that glorious 5 pot and Audi badge
You mean 40k more? RSQ3 is 120k and its smaller inside...
@@michaelk1051 well I paid 20k more when I ordered it last year. If it’s 120k then it’s still arguably better value $10k for the badge/build quality and $30k for that 5 pot and sound? They have exact same wheelbase so if you get the Rsq3 SUV version you lose minimal rear headroom and maybe a tad rear leg room
@@nickng5857 way too small inside compared to a Tiguan. Rear leg room horrendous, Boot size 512L vs 615L in the Tig. Was a no brainer. 10k of mods and you'll be saying hello to the tigs tail lights while i'm on the way to the airport on a month holiday with the extra 30k :P but enjoy your RSQ3
@@JLM85_ yea and wave good bye to your 5 year warranty lol. Mods for mods the ea855 blows the ea888 away for ease of gains power limit and sound. I’m only ever gonna put my kids in the back so a tad less space don’t mean anything. Build quality wise if you compared the two the Audi would be better for sure and Tiguan is still on last Gen interior. I’d take the sexier couple styling for the Sportback over 100L of extra boot space. Not saying it’s not a good car and enjoy it by all means but the Rsq3 isn’t sold out for over a year for no reason.
