Gary he needs to take a look at the standard of a guy who does same here in Australia for Wheels as this guy needs educating on how not to have the decission made before he actually tests a vehical and not say they are no good because he has a golf r My opinion
I like the Tiguan though for my money it’s a case of sticking with a diesel in luxurious Elegance trim. If you want an R, which you only do for its performance, stick with the Golf.
I’m stuck between this and the Cupra Ateca, it’s 8 grand more for this but I prefer the interior of the Cupra, the Tiguan interior is pretty much identical to my 2016 caddy van.
You really do get better 'bang for your buck' with the Cupra Ateca. I really love mine and think it's much better than my S3 saloon. Would love a drive in the Tiguan just to compare but I don't think that from watching this review it's worth the extra 8k.
Well Andrew a good alternative to the Golf R with more standard equipment but weighing 200 kilos more than the R a vital upgrade would be to fit bigger front disks,is there an alternative do you know of because other wise you'll be changing front brakes more frequently than you should.
It's an alternative for the "School Run" brigade.... Bigger sized alternatives to the Golf R would be the forthcoming Golf R Estate or the Arteon R Shooting Brake - the only thing I'd trade my 7.5 Golf R Estate in for
For me, it is much better than the Golf 8, much more beautiful, more practical, it is wrong to compare performance with golf, it should be compared with crossovers, and among them it is the leader. For the average layman, he can even give a lot of emotions, because he is tall and acceleration and passing turns are more emotionally perceived.
You can keep it. VW (and more so, Audi) are asking ridiculous money for their cars now and the finish is more akin to a 2017 Seat these days. Cheap crappy plastics in abundance. I own a Golf 7.5 and in all honesty, when I change, anything outside the VW group would be an upgrade. Lets be honest, anything in the rear or below waistline is just pure Vauxhall Astra circa 2005. Not a shot at you Mr Volkswizard, another great detailed vid as always on your part 👍
Agree with the point about cheap crappy plastics. Golf mk8 is far worse than mk7.5. In fact all recent VW products have gone down rent. Is it cost saving, to save weight or to make the quality gap to electric cars less noticeable? Answers on a postcard.......
Excellent review. I was considering this against the Golf R back in Feb and now feel I made the right choice for me with the Golf arriving in July. Some observations that stood out, I’m not a fan of the plastic wheel arches, quad exhaust tips aren’t as nice being the 7.5 style and I agree that the interior doesn’t look updated from previous generations so makes it look a bit underwhelming. I’d imagine the Audi SQ2 and even the BMW X2 M35i will be a serious competitor. How do you think this will stack up sales wise?
I test drove the golf R today and I must say I was in impressed. Heavy, void of excitement. I then drive the club sport and really enjoyed it. Lively, edgy. I can’t get my head around how the Audi S3 is cheaper than both!!
@@andrewmontague2636 as you have an R you might love it. The exhaust pops and sound are amazing. Don’t get me wrong. I dunno if it’s something about the gti being two wheel were you feel a bit more of the edge and dangerous. For me the R just lacked life and character.
VW did a really great job with the new facelift Tiguan! Especially love this spec - Lapiz blue with Estoril wheels is perfect! Pricing is a tough one but there’s not much it’s competing with anyway.. so hard to guess
I think it’s cool, it’s a pretty quick, good looking car for your family, better on long journeys than a smaller golf. I really like how it looks too, and fantastic colour 😎
Never driven one but on looks and badge alone the Ateca would have to be significiantly cheaper which it is. It just doesn't have that desirability factor though which I think is key to a lot of buyers of cars like these.
@@volkswizard fair point, at 40k+, I struggle to see the point of cupra, when it was the leon cupra, that made sense more power than a gti, less money, don't really see their business plan either
Did those weight figures include the pano sunroof. So many cars end up with its extra KG with motors for everything, seats, sunroof, powered boot. Seems odd for a car with an R.
Thanks Andrew as always. Before going for the 7.5 Golf Estate I was considering the T-Roc R, but made my mind up that it was a little light on the specs. Now this beauty comes along loaded with goodies. If it was closer to £45k I might have been tempted, but at over 50 with a few options makes it out of reach for me, as I'm sure it will for the majority. Road tax I'm guessing would be more than the Golf even without the (rip-off) top up. Then there is the extra fuel cost. That 200Kg extra really knocks the mpg down. Got a feeling the Golf Estate is here for a while. Unless a nice fully loaded T-Roc R comes along. lol. (Don't tell the wife). Stay safe matey.
I've always liked the r line Tiguan now it's got the performance to back it up although a car this size should have a v6 but then again that would put it up against the sq5
Great informative video, never thought I’d say this but I’d actually go for this over the Golf R as there’s less chance of it getting nicked, although it could be a target for the seats. Akrapovic exhaust is just too expensive. As a daily driver it’s brilliant
Glad you like it Greg. Not sure the seats as they are in Tiguan will fit a Golf so hopefully thieves won't be that stupid. I don't want to like the Tiguan R but it's hard to ignore what it offers over the Golf R for relatively little extra. Question is, is it good value or is the Golf R just too expensive....?
@@volkswizard Thing is not everyone will think to spec DCC in the Golf whereas it’s standard in the Tiguan. Golf will be a better car but for our (rubbish) roads and as a daily driver, for me the Tiguan edges it. Plus I can sleep easy at night!
That's the problem with mid-term facelifts. Golf 7.5 was 4.5 years after Mk7 launch and wasn't much different. Big difference here is that Golf 8 has chucked all that in the bin so the old UI looks dated sooner.
A very pleasant surprise, have been quite interested in this vehicle (which like the MK 8 Golf, still hasn't landed in 🇦🇺☹️). Think I'd take the MK 8 R Estate (station wagon in antipodes speak) instead after that review. As ever, thorough. Thanks Andrew, enjoy your weekend.👍
Thanks Graeme! Yes R station wagon is probably the thinking person's choice but doesn't look as flash as the Tiguan which for some is a big deal. Enjoy your weekend too sir :)
Another great video Andrew. I liked the ‘not a fan of SUVs’ comment at the end, but your appreciation that many people love them now is, sadly, reality. For me, hatch or estate all day though.
Thanks Duncan. There would be no point reviewing this car for me as I’m not an SUV buyer but they are so popular, clearly their negatives are outweighed by their benefits, if you need rear space, a high driving position and you want more road presence. Just seems so out of kilter with the times, something the hefty co2 figure confirms
@@volkswizard exactly that! Someone said recently that the fuel efficiency deficit that the world’s SUV obsession has caused has wiped out, many times over, the positive benefits from electric vehicles.
Excellent review. Must admit I am not a SUV fan but it was interesting to hear your views on this one. Keep up the good work ! Look forward to seeing one of your car tinkering videos soon !
VW German petrol engine is best in market but all car auto gear box design knob, dash board is topical old same not some new stylish also Suv name but height not feel big solid
1st Tiguan R review I’ve seen since Autogefuel. Glad you got the opportunity to review it! I must say, this is a serious piece of kit for the size or Just a Cupra Ateca with a VW badge? Albeit, it does make the Tiguan a bit more lucrative as an all rounder...
Hey, thanks for commenting. It's weird because I didn't actually ask for the Tiguan R, VW suggested I review it and I am so glad I did, partly because I was impressed more than expected but as you say because there aren't many other reviews out there which considering Tiguan is a big seller for VW (behind Golf and Polo) is quite surprising. Can't wait for Arteon R next though I suspect Tiguan R will appeal to more people simply because it's an SUV though the Arteon R shooting brake does look sensational so let's see what happens!
@@volkswizard Always happy to. I totally agree! Exited to see them on the road. The Arteon R - while not being a M340i touring - I’m sure will be up there for sure!
I get your point but it's actually £46k and I think you can spec the bits you want for the £4k spare. Plus it will be probably be available at 15% off so it's really a sub £40k car then
@@volkswizard as an ex pat 🇬🇧 living in Oz I think the cars here are delivered fully loaded or with a couple of packs as options whereas in the UK they’re more built to order... I have a Tiguan Allspace 162 (kw) and a Golf R and the price difference between Oz and UK is pretty stark, discounts aside (which you’d get here too)... different markets of course!
Fantastic video Andrew. Great looking SUV, particularly like the roof. I'd still choose the Golf every time as I just don't need that space, but for buyers who want an SUV, its a good choice.
Good video Andrew... I like these Tiguans. Having one in SEL spec for a few years I can say it's a great car but it has always felt like a family compromise... The R version looks cracking to get that balance more in favour of performance while still getting the kids and hound in it.
SEL is a nice package. My only reservation is that diesel would seem to make most sense in a car like this. But if it has to petrol for whatever reason, the R isn’t that different to a 2.0 TSI mpg wise
@@volkswizard It’s on a 66 plate so was one of the first mkii versions... Diesel and 4motion. I get 50mpg+ on a commute but I think I need one performance ICE car before we all go EV.
I bought a Tiguan R Line 200bhp diesel and apart from seats and R button on steering wheel it’s exactly the same but I must admit 320 bhp is a bit more interesting than 200 from a diesel. Once again brilliant video 👍🏼🤔
i currently have a mk8 golf R, lovely car, loads of problems VW obviously didn't see through!! Who ever owns one will know what i mean... Im going to be one of the yuppie mums (comment below) and i'm having the Tiguan R tomorrow :)
On reflection Mk8 really isn’t VW’s finest hour. Spoke to a VW fan yesterday who bought a Mk8 CS, asked him where it had gone and he said gr bought a BMW as it’s a new car and has zero issues. I get that
Great video for a great looking car. Currently own a mk7 r and considering what to get next. Looking at a t roc r but the interior really puts me off. One question i have that nobody can answer including vw dealers is how can you get a vw tiguan r line model black edition everywhere else but not in the uk?? Love the tiguan r but those i don't want to be spending my life in a petrol station.
It’s the same with GTI and R, a black pack can be ordered in other countries not UK. I’m not sure mpg will be as bad as the stats suggest, I spent all day in car, variety of driving, none of it slow and got over 30 mpg. Very unusual to beat the WLTP combined figure in situations like that
@@volkswizard Really love my golf r. Had it for 4 years and its been amazing. Only reason i want something higher is that i have bad knees so an suv would be easier to live with. As i said i like the t roc exterior but interior lets it down. Looked at jag f paces and volvo xc60 but I'm not 100 % on either.
I’ve owned a Cupra Ateca for a year. My wife doesn’t like it. It’s a bit plasticky and short on quality. Is this a move up from the Ateca? I’m thinking of switching. Any thoughts?
You guys don't get it. This is for people that need an SUV, but still don't want to give up spirited driving. It the taller, practical, more family oriented sport vehicles. A true Sports Utility Vehicle. Its not something to compete with a compact sports car.
It's a lot more traditonal but it's also a bit of a jumble of old and new so doesn't have a consistent them. No ambient lighting in dash is a bit disappointing. Plus the heated seat controls are only illuminated one you turn them on so a lot of fiddling to find them in the dark required.
@@krane15 Issues gifted by VW is a loooooot from my own personal experience than any other German car. So its a big No for me to go for a VW again... Won't recommend to anyone else tooo.
I certainly wouldn’t say no to a Tiguan R. I used to own the 1.5 TSI R-Line. My main issues were the weak acceleration, bland interior and it being a little boring to drive but it’s lovely to look at on the outside at least
T Roc R is still on Haldex as no torque vectoring, agreed re Tiguan R though www.evo.co.uk/volkswagen/204355/volkswagen-t-roc-r-given-a-refresh-alongside-mainstream-range#:~:text=There's%20no%20torque%2Dvectoring%20rear,new%20seats%20are%20welcome%20additions.
@@volkswizard that’s an odd call from VW, as I understand Magna Torque pretty must eliminates under steer, so why not the T-Roc? Odd! Great Chanel by the way mate love your reviews and honesty
Great review Andrew. Looks so much better than the previous model and now it packs a punch. Not for me though but that’s only because I don’t need something like that. But if I did I’d certainly consider it. Golf R for me. 👍
That was a very honest review. Like you, I'm not a fan of SUV type - they seem to be more "bling" than anything else, without serving any useful purpose! These high riding vehicles on huge wheels & low profile tyres just look ridiculous (& that's not just the Tiguan). The 3 (or was it 4?) off road driving modes made me laugh out loud....as if anyone would take one of these anywhere near a field (on 35 profile tyres too🤣)! The interior seemed to be a blend of the worst bits of the Mk 7.5 & Mk 8 Golfs. Having said that, you make a good point with regard to the look of it, compared to the Golf R (which does look a bit bland). I just don't "get" these sort of cars at all, or what purpose they serve. If you need more space, get a Golf R Estate. If you need more rear passenger space, get an Arteon R Shooting Brake - which is a car I'd love to see you review sometime!
@@krane15 then what is the point of marketing it as a "sporty car"? I've never understood the desire for the performance SUV - it's like mixing oil & water....and about as pointless
@@andrewmcivor42 Not at all. People want utility first, but that doesn't mean they want to give up performance -- at least not completely. Besides, the "S" stands for sport. Although only a few SUVs actually deliver that from the start.
@@krane15 high riding vehicles are not inheritly sporty - if you want a car to take along a twisty "A" road, then having something like a supercharged tractor makes no sense at all. These vehicles are all about "bling", they serve no useful purpose. I have a Golf R Estate, which is what I'd call a proper "Sports Utility Vehicle"...but proper cars just aren't fashionable nowadays, sadly
@@andrewmcivor42 Have you driven one? I own one, and the performance and handling are frankly astounding. 0-60 is half a second faster than the published figures at 4.7 seconds, which is also nearly a second faster than my previous 3 litre, V6 Porsche Macan. The cornering and general roadholding is nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the same torque-split rear differential that the Golf R 8 has. It doesn't wallow, and runs like it's on rails. Then you get the height, roominess, comfort and boot space of the standard Tiguan. The interior has included updates that make sense, but without needlessly hiding away everything useful under layers of screen menus. It's a car for every situation. Civilised on family duties, robust enough to cope with the rutted dirt tracks and fords I have around my village, but capable of acting like a hooligan when you want it to, which is most of the time. I'd much rather have this than a Golf. And I've enjoyed owning four Golfs.
I've missed this video, and in actuality, owning a Tiguan appears more enticing than the new Golf performance series. When you see the interior environment of the former, that's what actually should have existed for the latter. Instead, VW decided to delete the entire framework of HVAC functionality and what Golf performance owners only have are the digital interface. It's why I've decided the S3 is by far the better choice and in the real world, being beaten by a pure R isn't so bad, because you're enjoying the motorways and city driving in your own car.
Good review... I am getting an Golf 8 R soon. My old vehicle is a Range Rover Sport. I can't see the point in fast SUVs. They are useful however. Also this Tig is very expensive. For the same money you can get something better...
IF VW were trying to get NEW Customers to their brand they SHOULD have put the RS3 [5Pot] Engine in this THEN it would have been an LOON-A-TIC of a Car. Car Manufacturers have got a bit TOOO LAZY and too Health and safety -wise with their cars. Just look back at the 80s/90s/2000s when an COZZY//Quatro/RS Escort Turbo was an LOON-A-TIC Cars, We just DON;T see them built like that anymore [To many driver aids] Then FORD come out with this NEW Focus RS [RS Lol] Just because it had an DRIFT button but Fords forgot to Build the Engine RIGHT [Should have left Cosworth Build it] Then THAT FOCUS RS would have been worthy of the RS Badge.
This Tiguan R should be available in Canada. Instead of trading my mk7.5 Golf R for the mk8, I would get this tiguan R. It would be a great compromise for our snowy winters but sounds like we are not getting it. Mehh
@@volkswizard It isn't really a better car though, regardless of whether or not that's what the markets want. It may be the right car for VW in these strange times, but aside from a small gain in the largely irrelevant off road ability and a moderate gain in practicality, it is worse or about on par in every subjective area. Of course many simply want to have an SUV and much as I despair at the current trends, who am I to say what people should be buying? For me though, I think my guess was accurate!

Imagine getting a set of KW V3 on it and a tune. Then it probably will be amazing!
Impressive looking car and performance, shame the interior isn’t up to Audi standards.
love it all but would definately want a blacked out version
First though came to my mind.
If you drove it you would feel different just over 8000 miles in mine engines breaking in nicely it’s a beast
I think with 7.5 the drive wasn't too dissimilar to MK5 but MK8 CS and even base GTI do move things on
Put front and rear recording cameras
I saw a Tiguan R today and it looked superb! Sounded good, too.
Great video mate. I've got a Dolphin Grey one on order, should arrive at the end of May to join my trusty R32.
Lol, hope you’ve kept the receipt! The wheels are shocking pal
Good choice…it will look great with that blue and grey interior.
Nice one Kev, should look great together 👍
I'd love your R32.....my dream car!
Just a thought, but how does it compare with its stablemate the Cupra Ateca?
It is a nice car but it shouldn't have a 5 year old user interface if it's just come out now
That's the problem with mid-term facelifts. Golf 7.5 was 4.5 years after Mk7 launch and wasn't much different. Big difference here is that Golf 8 has chucked all that in the bin so the old UI looks dated sooner.
The Golf CS is the VW I want 😊
Ignoring the Golf R for a moment ......I remember that you said the T-Roc R was too hardcore, but would you rather have a T-Roc R or the Tiguan R.
Thanks RobTT, I hate filming the tinkering videos but I am sure there will be more!
@@volkswizard but you are good at them !
Pretty amazed that Discover pro, electric seats and surround view camera isn’t standard for a £50k car! Seems the UK is getting ripped for spec..
Is so nice and beautiful car
Had the first of the MK2 Tiguan in 2016, still think it's a lovely looking car. Wouldn't mind a go in one of these
I remember seeing my first Mk2 Tiguan, a white R line in the back streets of Munich, June 2016, I was bowled over by how good it looked :)
Watching from Ireland
I like this model very much and im normally not a suv lover..... Its better looking then the golf 8
Me too!
That’s not saying much!
I bought a Tiguan R Line 200bhp diesel and apart from seats and R button on steering wheel it’s exactly the same but I must admit 320 bhp is a bit more interesting than 200 from a diesel. Once again brilliant video 👍🏼🤔
Thanks Mal. Yes the beauty of R models is that they blend in but pack unexpected levels of performance, would rather have your mpg though :)
Your reviews are great, but please get a better microphone!
One of the most beautiful SUVs except for those ridiculous chrome bits. I hope they provide some package to blacken it out.
think it sounds better than it is...prefer the golf
i currently have a mk8 golf R, lovely car, loads of problems VW obviously didn't see through!!
I get that
Definitely a good review!
Nice white alfa romeo ;)
4c?
Id still pick the golf r over this
You guys don't get it. This is for people that need an SUV, but still don't want to give up spirited driving. It the taller, practical, more family oriented sport vehicles. A true Sports Utility Vehicle. Its not something to compete with a compact sports car.
I prefer the interior far better than the golf 8.
It's a lot more traditonal but it's also a bit of a jumble of old and new so doesn't have a consistent them. No ambient lighting in dash is a bit disappointing. Plus the heated seat controls are only illuminated one you turn them on so a lot of fiddling to find them in the dark required.
Looks good , seats are nice but lose the blue backing of the golf R... my wife has the t cross and loves it
Gotcha, didn't notice that but I don't miss them TBH
Do you review VW Sharan? Thx
stop reference to golf they are different. Stats on Tiguan only ai?
It is!
How about reliability?
Nobody buys German cars for reliability. In general, the sportier the car the less reliable for obvious reasons.
So true. But you spend your time on the inside, so you need to see that its worth the cost. That means nice materials to touch.
All new R models now use Magna torque and not Haldex
T Roc R is still on Haldex as no torque vectoring, agreed re Tiguan R though

@@volkswizard that’s an odd call from VW, as I understand Magna Torque pretty must eliminates under steer, so why not the T-Roc? Odd! Great Chanel by the way mate love your reviews and honesty
Great review Andrew. Looks so much better than the previous model and now it packs a punch. Not for me though but that’s only because I don’t need something like that. But if I did I’d certainly consider it. Golf R for me. 👍
No, thanks. The new Golf R is where it's at for me.
Good news, you can spec smaller tires or just change them yourself.
Did vw Birmingham lend it to you? I saw this one in Birmingham my yesterday
Nice audi tt ;)
FIX YOUR AUDIO recording device, volume too low

Good video. It has knobs!
It does indeed. Just a shame the climate panel is so low and doesn’t. To me that’s worse than the Golf 8 main screen method

Mehh
I'm just going to guess that the answer is.... no.
Not necessarily.... :)
