I grew up right next to Puu-Vallila and remember it as very run down area. The city did actually demolish many other similar neighbourhoods, but luckily Vallila survived. Now, of course, it is one of the most desirable neighbourhoods to live in.
The park where you ate the pastries is Old church park, or Ruttopuisto "Plague park" as the locals call it. It used to be a cemetery until 1829 and great northern war plague victims has been buried somewhere near it among others.
@@morristosee You better start using sauna more ! There are many - and almost everyone is different ! Almost every sauna - has some Finnish roots - and where travelling Finns - meet each other !
Hello from a fellow American who moved to Finland about a decade ago! I'm glad you enjoyed Helsinki so much. I'm impressed by your enthusiasm for the sauna experience. 😂 Not everyone can handle it. I'm also glad you enjoyed the food. Finland gets unfairly maligned for its food, but I love it! If you do come back I recommend a day trip to Talinn. It's such a cool town. Also Porvoo. You can see most of the town in a single day. It's lovely!
Woah, a decade ago!? How neat! I take it you like it there? We've always wondered why people would jump into cold water afterwards but now we totally get it 10/10 would recommend. The food surprised us too 🤤. We did make it to Tallinn! Funny enough, that video goes like in 32 minutes! We'll definitely add Porvoo to our list for when we visit Finland again! There's still so much more to see there! We really appreciate your comment ♥️
Great video 🥰 thanks for visiting Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 As a Finn living in the countryside, I got a lot of tips from it for my future visit to our country’s capital
Awee, thank you 🥺♥️ and yay! Ohhh, do you have any tips & recommendations for visiting the countryside? We definitely want to be back someday and venture outside from the capital!
those giraffes welcoming people to sompasauna used to be in the balcony of museum of natural history. we got them. gave them new life to greet people like they used to for so many your to the museum :) the gull seen in there is also from another location where we got it from :)
Suomenlinna is full of history. It was also own kind of center of trade, and many companies was born there or is thightly linked to it. Like Sinebrychoff, oldest brewery in nordics. At the time, soldiers daily payment included x amount of beer. This starting entrepreneur and bar owner got 10 year exlusive deal and started, as the only company, to deliver barrels of beer for the soldiers at 1819 and rest is history. Now they make Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite in Finland with license, just a name few. They also have huge variety of alkoholic and non alcolic drinks, sports drinks, sparkling waters, sodas etc.
WOAH! This is very insightful and surprisingly this was our first time hearing about this! We definitely would've been on the look out for some drinks prior if we knew 😔 but that just means we have to come back 🍻 We did have some Coca-Cola Zeros if that counts! Never would've guess the history behind something like a beverage 🤯
I'm glad to see that you liked our capital. In the 1990s I lived just a few blocks from that wooden area, Puu-Vallila, but not in there. I was impressed how well you had done your "homework" with the history, architecture etc. and also how well you pronounced "sauna" :) By the way, we have been joking foir years with my friends that a real sauna is operated by firewood and an electric one is just a sauna simulator. The best jokes have a bit of truth in them, don't they? :D
Woah, how neat and thank you for sharing 😊 We're not perfect but we try to learn as much as we can and share with others! A sauna simulator 😂😂. We're hoping to learn how to start & run sauna with firewood when we come back. It was intimidating as first timers because we didn't want to mess the flow up for others there ♥
About hoisting the Finnish national flag there are legal requirements for governmental bodies on when to do it or not. The presidential palace usually has the commander in chief's swallowtail flag when the president of the state is there. Military installations hoist the military swallowtail flag every day. For private citizens the good practice is based on tradition, in addition to the official flag days one may hoist the flag on a personal celebration day or at half mast for a day of mourning. And what's the use of owning a flag pole if there's nothing there, therefore some choose to hoist an owner's pennant (which may be inspired by the national flag) every day.
@@morristosee Just to clarify, all that goes for the full size flag, miniature ones pop up here and there and are flown especially in sporting events to cheer on team Finland. Also ships registered under Finnish jurisdiction are required to have the flag, which for practical reasons is not full size but is still considered an official flag.
Meeting y'all made our day 🥺🥹! We can't wait to post the videos but we're a little behind on the countries we've been 🙈🙈 we hope you enjoyed the rest of the festival!
@@christianheikkonen Woah 🤯 we saw mixed information online but it does seem like the crypt is free. Looks like we'll have to come back or during the evening!
@@morristosee I do recommend visiting Seurasaari, national museum (atm it's being renovated) and visiting outside of Helsinki to see other Finland than just capital. Tampere, Turku, Porvoo (old town), Hamina, Hyvinkää and other cities have all something unique to show. Also smaller cities/villages or the countryside have a lot to offer as well. You'd just need to get some contact person there to show places because the countryside doesn't quite open well to a foreigner without a local with them.
All of those sound great, we appreciate the recommendation! Finland is definitely high on the list of places to visit again! We almost went to Porvoo & Turku but they would've been short trips :/ we like to spend a few days at locations but just ran out of time 😔
